PUZZLE CORNER

HARLEY BLIFFEL’S HOUSE OF PUZZLES

by Steve Weinreich

First, old business: Puzzles from last issue:

Now, here are some more puzzles from Harley’s collections: “NO, NO, NANETTE” is a triply alliterative song title, as is “SLUE FOOT SUE”. Lean back, close your eyes and try to recall at least six more triply alliterative song titles, all starting with the same letter! (not necessarily “N” or “S”). Feel free to give yourself a little freedom to slip in an article or preposition. [Note: there are actually nine answers in Harley Bliffel’s original manuscript of this question; so you might not want to stop at six. – Steve] Construct FIVE FIVE-LETTER WORDS from one alphabet, using as many different letters as you can. [For this, I have only the question, with no answer. But I’ve been able to find a few 24-letter solutions (i.e. repeating only a single letter) using only common American words, so that seems to be what you should try for, at least. If you can use 25 letters, email your solution to Rob. – Steve] © 2015 Steve Weinreich all rights reserved

Red Carpet: A very long, half-inch-thick RED CARPET is rolled snugly onto a six inch diameter tube. The carpet was rolled over a period of exactly three days by three brothers from Vermont, Larry, Daryll (1), and Daryll (2). The brothers rolled in turns, Larry began and rolled at an average rate of 100 feet an hour in one or two hour turns. Darryl (1) followed, rolling at an average rate of 75 feet an hour, always three hours at a turn. Darryl (2) alternated rolling and unrolling according to his whim, but always in exact multiples of 25 feet. At the end of the three days, Larry finished his last turn with the roll at 62 inches in diameter. What is the length of the RED CARPET?

Upwords: In the game pictured, you’re to play two tiles from FORKLES to produce a score of 20 points.

SOLUTIONS: UPWORDS Use the R and E from FORKLES to make ORE, which incidentally forms NOR and LEST. ORE and NOR each score 5, and LEST is worth 10. The RED CARPET is 500 feet long. The area of the end of the roll is pi times 31 squared. Of that, all but the area of the tube, pi times 3 squared, is carpet. Thus, the area of the rolled up carpet edge is (961π minus 9π square inches = 952π square inches =) 2991 square inches. Since the carpet is half an inch thick, divide by 1/2 (or multiply by 2) for a carpet length of 5982 inches. 5982/12 yields 498.5 feet, but the actions of the three brothers (which weren’t all that important otherwise) constrain the length to multiples of 25 feet. The length of the RED CARPET must therefore be exactly 500 feet.

Region 1 Roundup by Lisa Maxwell

I just returned from Mensa of Northeastern New York's RechaRGe regional gathering (RG), held each Labor Day weekend in the Albany NY area. What a fantastic event! A weekend full of fun activities with something for everyone - speakers, games, themed parties, hospitality (food, drink and conversation) and more. If you have never attended an RG, you are missing out on one of the best benefits of your membership. Gatherings are typically hosted by local chapters; all members and their guests are welcome at any event, not just in your local group or region, but anywhere in the world. This month there are two events in our region - register, attend and find out just what you've been missing! - October 10-11 - Harvest Weekend and Games Night - Bethel CT - hosted by Southern CT Mensa - http://scmharvestfest.wordpress.com - October 30 - November 1 - Wicked Good! 50th birthday party - Fitchburg, MA - hosted by Boston Mensa - http://rg.bostonmensa.org It's Official! Our next Region1 Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) will take place on Saturday November 7th in Albany NY. Join us for a fun, hands-on day of leadership workshops created to help you help your local chapter. Cost to attend, including Friday night hospitality and Saturday catered lunch is free to all members - FREE! Low hotel rates have been negotiated for the weekend - local groups have the option to fund their members by covering the hotel costs. This is an investment in the future of your local group. Did I mention that the event is FREE? Topics will include:

Recruitment & Retention Overview

Conflict Resolution

Getting People Involved

Build Your Proctor Network Benefits of attending the LDW:

Opportunity to network with others who have experienced the same issues - share the knowledge.

Local groups with members who attend will receive points toward their annual Jewel Awards.

Most important, attendees will have the opportunity to learn, grow, and then apply what they've learned to help their local groups thrive.

Spots are limited - register today! https://2015albanyldw.wordpress.com/ Next AMC meeting - Sept 12, 2015 By the time you are reading this column, the second AMC meeting of the current term will have taken place. Since I don't own a crystal ball, I don't yet know what discussions or decisions occurred at that meeting but will be sure to report back next month; the meeting minutes will also be made available online. October is Mensa Membership Month - Mensa Testing Day is Saturday, Oct. 17. Has your local group scheduled one or more testing sessions for this day or during the month of October? This is your opportunity to take advantage of the added publicity this month, so schedule your test sessions right away! Testing prospective members in your area helps your local group grow. Who knows, that person you test today may become an active member of your chapter, volunteering to host events or taking on a leadership role, and that in turn enhances your membership experience. This month's question for you… What is your favorite Mensa membership benefit?

Newsletter 6

Is it a regular event you attend? A Special Interest Group (SIG) you belong to? Being able to volunteer and share your talents while giving back to the organization? Is it being able to connect with other members via social networking? Or do you just enjoy having the Mensa membership card in your wallet? Let me know and I will share your responses in an upcoming column. Lisa Maxwell 617-335-1484 [email protected]

American Mensa Committee Meeting

September 12, 2015

Mini Minutes

Chair Deb Stone thanked everyone (AMC members and staff) for their participation in yesterday’s board development

day. As part of yesterday’s discussions, the AMC set forth their vision statement:

We are board members who serve American Mensa as leaders who value civility and trust as we take action that is

transparent, forward thinking, strategic, and balanced.

An informative and useful presentation on BoardEffect, the secured board portal being used by the AMC, was given

by Dottie Schindlinger, a founding member of BoardEffect.

The minutes of the July 2, 2015 AMC meeting were approved.

The following presentations/reports were presented to the AMC by staff:

- Treasurer’s Report

- Executive Director’s Report, including reports from key staff members:

o Mensa Foundation

o Financial Director

o Communications

o Technology

o Membership

o Staff

o Marketing

Discussion

• The Name and Logo Committee withdrew their motions regarding revisions to the guidelines/rules surrounding the

use of the Mensa name and logo. These motions were withdrawn as the Committee felt there needed to be more work

done with the possible involvement of other committees and more input from the AMC. The AMC then had a lengthy

discussion on this topic.

The AMC acted on the following motions:

• Passed a motion to expand the ExComm by adding an RVC to the ExComm. RVC Baker Ring was then selected to

become a member of the ExComm.

• Passed a motion to revise the presentation of the ASIEs to change references to the “Board of Directors” or the

“Board” to “American Mensa Committee” or “AMC”.

The next AMC meeting will be held on December 6, 2015, in Grapevine, Texas.

Respectfully submitted,

Lori Norris

American Mensa Secretary

Chance informed us that National will reimburse up to $150 for the boostings. Different colleges will be targeted. He also plans to recruit help from Heidi Paulding on contacting local high schools. For now, moving toward initiating a targeted (Maine) scholarship will be put on hold. For the future, we may create some fundraisers for this. Mind Games: It was discussed, that in our 2017 Mind Games bid, we received two weekends available from the Doubletree Bid for Proposal: April 14-16 and April 21-23. Because Easter is on April 16, we would need the DoubleTree to offer us the weekend of the 21-23. (Reviewing after the meeting, Anne has found that we will not be able to incorporate a Patriot’s Day Monday into our Mind Games Bids going forward.) New Member Dinners: New-Member dinners are planned for next month. Anne reported that there are 9 eligible members from the northern section (where the New-Member dinner would be offered in Bangor), and 10 eligible members from the southern section (where the New-Member dinner would be offered in the Portland area). Survey: Anne plans to use SurveyMonkey to reach up to 99 of our members who have emails, and present them 10 questions, to get more information about where our Maine membership stands. We can do this at no cost. If we need to reach out to additional members or present additional questions, there would be a cost, but it would still be affordable for us. Ideas for questions: "Do you read the newsletter?"; "Would you be interested in helping out for our Mini RG?"; "What activity or activities would you be likely to attend?"; "How are we doing...?" Next ExComm Meeting: Sunday, December 6, at 1:00 pm in the Portland Area (location not set) The meeting was adjourned at 12:23 pm.

We’ll have an entire convention center (7 rooms) to ourselves at Great Wolf Lodge. Check it out at: (https://www.greatwolf.com/new-england) You will find all the usual RG activities at our birthday party. All meals and snacks will be furnished by the hotel and are included in the registration fee. The resort offers great free features for our partygoers who stay at the resort and many other attractions for a nominal fee. All rooms have 2 Queen beds, a pull out couch, microwave, and small refrigerator. Rooms reserved before October 23 are $129/night. There will be an additional charge of $19.99 per night when the room is booked but the fee will be subtracted when you check in. Our group booking code is: 1510BOSTON.
