In 1928, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy & Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. purchased their Hyannis Port summer home, now known as the Kennedy Compound.

Located on the shore, less than three miles from Main Street Hyannis, it served as a getaway for the Kennedy family, including U.S. President John F. Kennedy, U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and U.S. Senator Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy.

Because of the Kennedy Compound’s proximity to Main Street, many significant Kennedy events occurred in downtown Hyannis.

The 1.6 mile Kennedy Legacy Trail explores the family’s rich history on Cape Cod, with stops at 10 important Kennedy sites in Hyannis.

Take the walking tour to understand the Kennedy family’s ties to Cape Cod

The Kennedy Legacy walking trail guides visitors to 10 important Kennedy family sites in downtown Hyannis. At each site, an informational sign uncovers stories and history about the Kennedys on Cape Cod. Sites include the Hyannis Armory, where John F. Kennedy gave his presidential nomination acceptance

speech, as well as the Kennedy’s church, St. Francis Xavier, where Rose Kennedy attended Mass. The walking tour is 1.6 miles in one direction, and takes approximately 1 1/2 hours to complete. It will take an additional 35 minutes to walk back to the start of the trail. During the peak summer season, a free trolley can be taken to make the return trip.The tour begins at the JFK Hyannis Museum at 397 Main Street in Hyannis.
