JULY 26 2019 VOL. 5MAIN SHEETCommodore’s CommentsGreetings from the foredeck – hope you’re having a great summer!
Summertime and the livin’ is easy; the kids are alright.
Plus, the other morning I woke up to this bad mamba jamba above our boat house, keeping watch over Mill Pond; the bald eagle sightings have got to be a good sign, right?
It’s that time of year, and some of you will soon be tapped on the shoulder to take a turn and join the Board of Directors. There’s at least a couple spots that need to be filled, and the nominating committee has been busy. If you’re a reader of these missives, and the BoD Meeting Minutes, you know my perspective. After almost 50 years of membership, I felt honored to be asked to serve. Almost three years in, I can assure you the feeling doesn’t go away. Never a dull moment, it’s always something; but at the end of the day, 126 years on, it’s a long and glorious line and a joy to be a part of it. Plus, you know, we’re a pretty fun group, and there’s a couple people that make sure we have treats to each gathering.
Lest you think it’s just me prattling on, this came in from one of the newer board members:
Certainly have learned a great appreciation for all those who have served before me. I had no idea what went on behind the scenes with the BoD. Only what went on in the kitchen which in itself is pretty impressive. Dedicated volunteers they are! The spirit at Beulah is alive and well. The BoD role is not something I would have ever signed up for on my own, however I am honored to have had my shoulder tapped to be a part of this process.
Bottom line, the club needs you; if YOUR shoulder is one of the next ones tapped, please say yes.
Never forget: if you’re lucky enough to live at the lake, you’re lucky enough.
See you out there – Joe
Congrats Will & Brad2019 ILYA C Invitational CHAMPIONS
COMMODORE’S BALL Details inside
From the Sailing CommodoreHi Everyone, well we are about to turn the page on July and we will be on the back stretch of summer before you can blink. This past week the kids were on Nagawicka for X WYA, the green fleet traveling up to Cedar lake for the ILYA No Tears on Monday, Thursday starts X ILYA on Minnetonka and finishing out the month Opti ILYA on White Bear. WOW, there are going to be some parents with tired eyes from all the driving. Thanks to Candace and Christine for keeping the website up to date with regatta news and photos.
August promises no rest for Team Beulah as the C fleet will head out to the WYA and then the MC fleet will join them up at Winnebago for the ILYA.
Congratulations to Will Haeger and Brad Roble for bringing home the ILYA Invite championship this weekend. Will and Brad ran away with the regatta with a dominating performance look out for the B1 as the regatta season heats up.
Please start to gather your trophies from last year and make sure they are polished and engraved. You can drop them off anytime in the Sailing School room or if you see me at the club just let me know and I can put them in a safe place.
I would once again like to thank all the race committee volunteers for the work on the water this summer. The LBYC really has so many talented and generous people it is a pleasure to work with you all.
See you soon, Mike Greeson

Socially SpeakingAh, summer... July slows down socially but picks back up in August. The Wednesday night cookouts continue to provide a well deserved break from cooking and cleaning - unless you’re on the committee - and the meals have been delicious. Please check the LBYC website for menus.
Thank you to all who thoughtfully recycle in the bins provided in the main dining area. The white recycle bins are located beside the trash cans. Paper products, cans, glass and certain plastics all can be placed in the bins. Not sure what to put in the bins? A list of approved items is located on the wall by each container.
The club is looking good thanks to the members who pitch in and help out when they see the need. After an event I was just too tired to empty an outside bin and low and behold when I went by the next day some good soul placed the contents in the dumpster. It’s nice to have your own fairy godmothers/fathers.

WEATHERThe tropical type weather was relieved by a cold front that brought along this shelf cloud and associated rain on July 20.
ATTIC ROOF VENTILATIONThe attic roof ventilation system was updated by Assurance Roofing on July 9. A typical roof ventilation goal is to provide one square foot of free area ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic area. This ventilation is distributed equally between vents lower on the roof, typical through soffit vents and higher on the roof though ridge vents. A calculation was done and the free area provided in the recent retrofit provided the required amount of non-mechanical natural air distribution.
When we visited the attic during an inspection prior to the work we discovered that the existing soffit vents were completely blocked with debris. The replacement pre-finished soffit vents were enlarged to provide the necessary vent capability. The existing attic ridge vent was also replaced to provide updated ventilation qualities.
On warm summer days attic temperatures can reach 160 degrees, but with proper ventilation the temperature can be well below that. This reduces the heat load that needs to be overcome by the mechanical air handling units to cool the building. When I walked through the building the day after the work was completed, I could swear the building felt cooler without the AC system operating, than the day before.
AWNINGSGallagher Awning and Tent repaired three seams on two West elevation awnings. The seams of these awnings needed to be re-sewn after the winter weather conditions had opened them. This was the same fabricator that had installed the awnings seventeen years ago. The awnings on the West elevation of the building bear the brunt of sun, wind, rain, snow and ice.
Although the firm is from Madison area they do not charge a traveling fee if we are patient to wait for other area accounts to be included on the trip. The seventeen year awnings, however, are beginning to show their age. Gallagher has the same Sunbrella fabric in stock at their plant.
Candidates for replacement in spring are the four West facing awnings.
CRANESailors and land support are having trouble using the crane. Masts and rigging are hitting the hoist electrical connection bracket which allows the hoist to travel along the steel beam boom of the crane assembly.
Several solutions are proposed that will be discussed when Trester Crane visits the site on July 25. One solution is to move the hoist to the end of the boom and fix it in that position. With the hoist fully extended along the beam the electrical connection no longer
needs the bracket allowing it to travel along the boom with the hoist. The bracket will be removed and the electrical attached in a per-manent manor along the beam. This solution would eliminate some flexibility of a traveling hoist, but ground marking could indicate trailer locations where a pick is possible.
The other solution possible is to modify the electrical connection bracket to reduce the cantilevered distance from the boom. This would still allow flexibility but still could offer an obstacle to masts and rigging.
WATER TESTThe Walworth County Public Health Department tested the water at the building on July 2 which came back with good quality report. This is necessary as with any well water but especially important at the building because it is a commercial building in Walworth County. The Environmental Health Specialist also wanted to review the well pump assembly under a manhole in the North section of the parking lot. At the time of the inspection the manhole could not be opened but with the help of Jim Kutschenreuter the manhole bolts tight grip was released and a future inspection scheduled for Wednesday, July 24.

Will Haeger and Brad Roble take ILYA C Invitational TitleJuly 20th and 21st Okauchee Lake Yacht Club hosted the ILYA C invitational regatta. Coincidently this event has often fallen on the same weekend of the WYA championship Which was the case again this year. With that, Team Beulah was down a few of our notable contenders as they were off supporting our X Fleet on Nagawicka Lake. Nevertheless, your Beulah C Fleet hit the road strong fashion with 11 boats on the starting line. Still an excellent showing and among the top in terms of total number of boats on the line from one club. We are definitely lucky!
Conditions were overall favorable throughout the event & day one started with the strongest breeze of the regatta, blowing at 10-12 mph with air temps reaching well into the 90s. It was hot to say the least, and it was noted that the Okauchee water is nowhere near as clean as Lake Beulah! We are certainly lucky, anyone notice a pattern here?! Day one two races before lunch and before a set of storms rolled through Lake Country. Watching the storm blow over the moored C boats from the newly expanded deck of the OLYC was an interesting sight and good way to start the cocktail hour prior to Saturday evening’s festivities
With three Beulah boats in the top ten overall after four races in the two day event, Will Haeger and Brad Roble with third Rachel Beers of Delavan took the winning title. They sailed an excellent series of races with finishes of 3, 1, 9 & 1. Excellent racing by one of the best teams in the Beulah C Fleet, if not the entire Inland. Lac La Belle hosts the C WYA Championship August 2-4 and the C Inland Championship follows in mid-August on Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh. Stay tuned for more C fleet and action!
