Four years ago we started with many ideas, still relatively confused about the characteristics of MaP populations, as well as concepts were really general and not completely clear. We were used to talk about marginality with special attention to the geographic concept, then we have evolved the concepts defining the genetic characteristics, the ecological traits etc… It was necessary to define and harmonize concepts of geographic, ecological and genetic marginality ; Within that we had to consider genetic (neutral) and phenotypic traits; Spazialisation was another important topic;

We also discovered that: -is not easy to use the information available in literauture neither in existing databases, even if already partilally harmonised at EU level;

-Models of marginality cannot be generalised neither by species, neither by kind of marginality, neither by ecologcal/gographic level.

-climatic scenarios and maps can give problems of resolution and many gaps were hilightened. Anyway the experience in other research networks aid to solve problems;

- matching geographic, genetic and phenotypic data is difficult already for species, it is more difficult when we try to focus the attention on marginal populations.

-Model species were finally used to simplfy the work for finding valuable indexes for defining “marginality”….

- many discussion were needed to share opinions and stretegies among the 38 countries.

- but also we have spread our ideas and concepts at world, regional and national level with Cost tools and publications.

The objectives achieved:

- Gathering information of ditribution and ecological information of target species:

Species considered

Abies alba

Fagus sylvatica

Fraxinus excelsior/ Fraxinus sp.

Picea abies

Pinus halepensis / P. brutia

Pinus nigra

Pinus pinaster

Pinus pinea

Pinus sylvestris

Taxus baccata

Quercus robur/petraea

- A niche model approach was used to define marginality of the populations.

- Geographical marginality indexes for the different species/populations have also defined.

- These indexes have been distributed to the responsibles of the 10 different species

- These marginality indexes are being used to establish the

relationship among marginality and genetic diversity for the target species, in collaboration with the other WP.

- A methodological paper is being produced, and a preliminar

versión will be discussed during the final meeting.

Summary of research, networking and dissemination activities activities by Cost Action FP12020 WG2 members: Deliverable 5 • Organization of meta-database and collection of data regarding the populations studied for neutral and adaptive genetic variation. Contribution of data from 15 countries and for 19 species. • Construction of maps based, on the data collected from the above Database, for the species with ample number of populations across Europe

FAGUS SYLVATICA Green dots = Marginal pop. / Red dot = Non-marginal pop. / Pink dot = Unknown status

FAGUS SYLVATICA Orange dots = Unknown Conservation status / Blue dots = Conserved pop.

Based on the Environmental and Marginality Indexes that were recently delivered by WG1 and the raw data sampled mainly during the Florence Workshop: - Analysis on the patterns of genetic diversity among environmentally or geographically marginal vs core populations is ongoing - Analysis based on regression of intra-population phenotypic variation and phenotypic population plasticity against 5 marginality indexes is being carried out for quantitative/adaptive traits

Based on the data collected from the meta database the following RELEVANT SPECIES were identified: ADAPTIVE GENETIC VARIATION: Fagus sylvatica, Abies sp. , Picea abies, Pinus halepensis, Pinus brutia, Pinus pinea, Pinus nigra MOLECULAR MARKERS: Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior, Picea abies, Abies sp., Quercus robur, Quercus petraea, Pinus

nigra,Pinus halepensis, Pinus brutia, Pinus pinaster

The Round Table: This will not be a traditional round table imposed from above. Since we are a network where everyone can make a contribution, this round table will be built by all of us together. In these three days we will take stock of the results, listen to the views of the stakeholders and we will still have the opportunity and to exchange ideas. We can identify key questions and finally get to see perspectives to develop any new activities and to deepen this research theme.

Main preliminary K-Questions and Perspectives (just to start to think): How to use data and maps produced:

How to use the DB and map repository and its transfer to EUFORGEN? The use of DB and map repository as an open resource. How foresters/managers/policy makers can be made aware about methods and information issued from MaPs FGR? How to introduce MaP definitions and descriptors in Forest inventories at national, regional and World level? How to manage Forest Reproductive Materials from MaP FGR? Nursery systems, provenance regions and scenarios for their use, legislation, conservation, breeding challenges and strategies, genomics problems and perspectives … New or relatively new traits to be investigated, adaptive traits, epigenetics, Genetic aspects to be investigated and deepen on MaPs: possible research themes to be proposed….developing research and new research networks … How to put MaP-FGR in the future research themes and funding opportunities at European & international level?

WG Leaders have a vision of problems, challenges, gaps and the present situation from the point view of their WGs … Each of the Participants has developed their own ideas and opinions accordingly to their personal view, the interaction in the FP1202 network and their national level experience … External Stakholders have a wider vision of strategies and of the different contexts where Map FGR can play a role and how can be better managed and concpets, ideas and materials can be used …

Side event at COFO 23 – Cont’d

Main outcomes of the discussion: • Areas where awareness on MaP should be raised: conservation,

restoration, climate change Conservation: consider MaP for in situ and ex situ conservation

programs, when defining habitat conservation networks or high conservation value forests

Restoration: MaP as part of the solution (e.g. provide seeds that are adapted to different and contrasted environments)

Climate change: include MaP in garden tests, response of MaP to dieback and pests

• Make other countries benefit from the results of the COST Action • Tools developed by the project to be included in the toolbox for

forest monitoring and reporting
