The AGAR MBBR technology
• MBBR
 Simple control process
 Resistant to shock loads
 Small footprint
Operation Training required
• Activated sludge
 Traditional waste water
treatment
 More space required
 More complex to
operate
 Less resistant to shocks
Proprietary and confidential
 Separation of biomass from pure
MBBR systems is more challenging,
compare to conventional Activated
Sludge or IFAS systems.
 Existing solutions are: Chemicals
usage (coagulant/flocculant) for
gravity sedimentation or dissolved
air flotation unit
Finding an economical simple solution for optimal solid liquid separation having different sludge
quality in the same biologically treated waste water
The Problem
Proprietary and confidential
Standard MBBR process prior to a MC
AGAR® MBBR
 Multi stage biological reactor
Filled with biomass carriers (20 –
70% fill ratio)
 No sludge recirculation
Moving Bed Biological Reactor
Proprietary and confidential
The solution is Media Clarifier
 The Media clarifier (MC) was
developed specifically for MBBR
effluent characteristics
The clarifier contains a floating layer
of plastic media that improves solids
separation and clarification
Proprietary and confidential
Why a Media Clarifier?
Simple operation
Small footprint – up to
50% less than normal
Lower or even no
chemical requirement
Very low energy
consumption
No scum problems

MC Mechanism
Wastewater flows through the unit in an up
flow manner
A fraction of the solids settle in the bottom
Other solids separate in the upper media layer
Sludge is emptied from the bottom
periodically
Upper media zone is emptied periodically
Some times aeration is introduced to agitate
upper media layer and improve periodic
cleaning
Proprietary and confidential
Separation mechanism
Solids settle in the lower clarifier zone
Solids are also separated in the upper media zone
due to the following mechanisms:
– Auto-flocculation – adhesion between small particles due to
turbulent micro currents
– Entrapment within the media in non-turbulent zones
– Adsorption of particles to organic matter attached to the
media. High surface area of the media allows abundant of
attachment zones

Media clarifier (MC) Floatation unit
Technology description The Media Clarifier (MC) is a unique and innovative clarifier
developed in order to provide a specific solution to sedimentation
characteristic typical to MBBR processes.
Sedimentation and separation of solids takes place in one tank with
an up-flow pattern –. Sedimentation and concentration of coarse
solids takes place at the lower part,.
In the upper zone a solid/liquid mixture is passing through a non-
conform layer of Jambo Media with captures the fine solids. Effluent
water flows over an outlet weir.
Dissolved Air flotation (DAF) This technology makes use of
pressurized Air-water mixture and releasing them to the tank. The
solid attached to the air bubble and float to the surface, were they
are remove by skimmer.
The DAF uses cycle le pressurization
Chemical are used for coagulation of the fine solid and electrolyte
polymer for attaching solids into agglomerates that will float.
Concentration of sludge is determined by the speed or depth of the
upper skimmer.
