Commissioned by Sarah Joslyn as a gift to the city of Omaha in memory of her late husband, George, the Museum opened in 1931. The original building is considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the nation. The Scott Pavilion opened in 1994, adding seven galleries for postwar and contemporary art and special exhibitions, as well as the signature Conagra Brands Atrium. In 2009, Joslyn completed a redevelopment of its campus that added the Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden and Truhlsen Discovery Garden. The Museum stopped charging general admission in 2013, again providing free access to the public as it had done from its opening until the mid-1960s. In 2014, two new free spaces were created for visitors: the Karen and Doug Riley Contemporary Artists Project (CAP) Gallery, featuring contemporary exhibitions and commissioned projects; and ART WORKS: A Place for Curiosity, featuring nine hands-on activity stations with connections to art in the galleries. In 2018, Snøhetta was selected to lead a physical and programmatic expansion that will be transformative for the Museum, the city of Omaha, and Nebraska. Construction began on the addition—the 42,000-square-foot Rhonda and Howard Hawks Pavilion—in August 2021 and is slated for completion in 2024.
Dedicated to excellence and celebrating art in all its variety, the Museum maintains a collection of art historical significance. We invite you to explore the many galleries that contain collections ranging from antiquity to the present. Through its collections, exhibitions, and education programs, Joslyn seeks to foster appreciation and enjoyment of art for the benefit of a diverse audience.
