Development & Implementation of CountrySTAT

in Ethiopia

CountrySTAT Ethiopia is developed through the financial

and technical support obtained from FAO

The system is being implemented by the Central Statistics

Agency (CSA), in close collaboration with the Ministry of

Agriculture (MoA). Other major stakeholder institutions currently

involved in the implementation of CountrySTAT, among others,

include: Revenue and Customs Authority and National Meteorology

Agency (NMA).

CountrySTAT Ethiopia website was Launched on 15 March, 2011

The Website resides on the CSA Server

It is now directly accessible from the CSA Server

The CountrySTAT Technical Working Group

Meetings of representatives from the CSA and MoA

(CountrySTAT National Secretariat) were initially held to

identify and organize the CountrySTAT Technical Working

Group (TWG)

The members of the TWG were also identified during these

meetings

Seven professionals (from the CSA and MoA) were initially

involved in the TWG

One TWG meeting has so far been held (3-5 January 2011)

A 3-day training in the use of CountrySTAT was given to 15

TWG members drawn from different stakeholder national

institutions in April, 2011

The training was provided by 2 trainers from FAO CountrySTAT

TWG Meeting Approach in Data Collection and Validation

(harmonization, standardization & integration)

The TWG meeting was intended to include plenary sessions and

group discussions

To facilitate easier group work, 3 subgroups were formed and each

subgroup worked on 3 different sets of indicators

Datasets were checked and validated using online soft copies as well

as the hard copy publications of indicators

During the plenary sessions problems encountered by each subgroup

during data validation were discussed and resolved

Some datasets needed further verification and were checked and

validated later on after the meeting

During the 3 day meeting 18 different datasets were collected and

validated

Main Achievements of the CountrySTAT Project

More than 40 datasets from different sources have been collected,

validated and uploaded to the CountrySTAT Ethiopia website

The preparation and upload of comprehensive metadata along with

the respective indicators – it is useful for data users

CountrySTAT Ethiopia website is hosted locally on the CSA Server

(owned)

The collaboration among major national institutions producing

statistics on food and agriculture has been established and each

institution is represented in the TWG

The use of CountrySTAT has allowed countries to collect and

disseminate data according to the international standards

(standard concepts, definitions, classifications) – data comparability

Main Achievements . . .

The implementation of the CountrySTAT system has created an

additional opportunity to improve the quality of data.

(data validation, application of international standards, metadata etc.)

The use of CountrySTAT has also enabled end-users to obtain data

on food and agriculture from a single source.

Panorama Report I has been compiled and uploaded

The Correspondence Table between the national and FAO standard

classifications has been prepared and uploaded
