    The filly’s three-year-old brother

Shelby Cobra, one of two stakes winners at Flemington for Toronado on

Saturday, won the Springtime Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at just his third start

    for trainer Mike Moroney.

Mills was impressed by the manner of Shelby Cobra’s victory, but it

was only earlier this week when he thought the mare and foal deserved

    strong consideration,

“Funnily enough, I only spotted the horse and started to pay attention

to her on Tuesday after I saw the ad in the ANZ, so you can say that the full-

page ad worked there,” Mills told ANZ Bloodstock News last night.

“I had seen her mentioned, but the ad twigged a memory. I rang

Russell Osborne to ask if I could go and have a look. I did the run to

Riverbank Farm at Benalla today and inspected her. I liked her, so I spoke

    to my clients and we

    had a bid.”

    The Newton,

    Mills and Roberts

    partnership enjoyed

    Group 1 success last

    month with the Mick

    Price and Mick Kent

    Jr-trained Odeum,

    who was spelled after

her narrow defeat in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on Derby Day

at Flemington to become number one seed in the group’s select group of

    quality race fillies and broodmares.

Mills is confident that Segenhoe Valley and her foal will prove to be a

well-bought addition to the group’s bloodstock portfolio.

“You pick up any catalogue and look at 1000 mares, how many of them

will produce a stakes horse in their first three foals?” he pondered.

“I don’t know the answer to that question but I am tipping it is less

than five per cent. I think what this mare has done needs to be recognised.

“When you start to think about it more, we go to the yearling sales and

spend $300,000 to $400,000 trying to buy a nice yearling. With this, you

have essentially bought the foal and you have got mum as well.

“If I went to the sales and said to Newhaven Park’s John Kelly that we

want Odeum and Odeum’s mum for $400,000, you would get laughed off

the place. I said to the boys, ‘it’s the time of year and the situation that

we’re all in, maybe the true value of this horse won’t get recognised’ and

personally I think that’s the case.”

Segenhoe Valley’s dam Scone (Zabeel) is from a potent and current

family with the likes of Listed winner Roulettes (Flying Spur) and her

offspring Sun City (Zoustar) and Parlophone (I Am Invincible), as well

as talented stakes-winning sprinter Vezalay (Shamardal), out of Tactfully

    (Flying Spur), herself Group-placed.

Mills will have Segenhoe Valley vetted this

First for Worthy CauseAin’t She Lovely (2 f ex Backpacker Express by

Big Brown) took out a 1100-metre maiden at

Ipswich yesterday to provide first-season sire

Worthy Cause (Choisir) his maiden winner with

just his second runner. The John Zielke-trained

Ain’t She Lovely, bred by Dovedeen Stud, had

finished unplaced in her first two starts but was

nothing short of impressive yesterday. Sent off

a $4.40 chance under Georgina Cartwright,

the filly made all and quickened nicely in the

straight to defeat Portobello Road (Dream

Ahead) by one and three-quarter lengths, with

Air Force Rocket (Air Force Blue) finishing

four lengths behind the winner in third. The

Group 3-winning Worthy Cause stands at Clear

Mountain Fairview Stud for a fee of $5,500 (inc.

GST) in 2020. His only other runner to date, Star

Twinkle, finished unplaced at Toowoomba in

September and has not been seen since.

    Surprise Baby bypasses Zipping

Paul Preusker has elected to spell Surprise Baby

(Shocking) after a gallop at Hamilton yesterday

revealed he was not 100 per cent, meaning

he will miss Saturday’s Zipping Classic (Gr 2,

2400m) at Sandown. Surprise Baby finished 13th

in last week’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and

Preusker revealed the race took a lot out of the

six-year-old. "He had a stretch out and he wasn't

quite where I wanted him to be," the trainer said.

"He's not 100 per cent and it's probably the right

time to put him out and chase a bit of spring

grass. I was looking forward to him starting at

Sandown with the sting out of the track but you

don't want to take him there and waste a run. It's

only eight days since the Melbourne Cup and

he hasn't quite recovered." Preusker will give

Surprise Baby a break and then set him for the $5

million All-Star Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley

in March next year. "There's plenty of races but

a race like that over a mile would suit him," he

said. "We'll put him out and he'll be good for the

autumn. There's plenty of races to pick from."

Hayes believes Sin can strikes againConnections of eight-year-old Sin To Win (Sir

Percy), who broke an 898-day drought when

taking out a Benchmark 96 at Flemington

last week, are confident he can strike again in

Saturday’s Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m). The

Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained gelding

landed the Melbourne Cup day contest by

two and a half lengths and is the early market

leader for the Sandown Cup. “I think going into

a Sandown Cup with a confidence boosting win

like he had, he just needs everything to go right

but I think he’s a deserved favourite,” Hayes told

    Racing.com. “I’m hoping he’s improved, I’ve

been really happy with him after the race and

I think he’ll be very competitive.” Sin To Win is

being stepped up to 3200 metres for the first time

this weekend, but Hayes does not see that posing

any problems. “I really think he’ll stay all day.

That was his career-best run, I thought the way he

finished off and I think if he ran in a Melbourne

Cup he’d be finishing midfield in the top ten. He

just needs trips and as he’s gotten older he’s got a

couple of habits where he’s jumped slow, so he’s

a horse that needs everything to go right for him.”

Aysar out to silence the doubtersTom Dabernig and Ben Hayes are also hot on the

chances of Aysar (Deep Field), who is set to line up

in the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m). The colt

has been installed as the hot favourite following

two consecutive runner-up performances in the

Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Carbine

Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). "He'll be having his

third run at a mile and we're lured by the Group

2 and small field," Dabernig said. "He's got

strong form for a race like this." Dabernig said

some people queried whether Aysar could run

out a strong 1600 metres after he looked to have

the Carbine Club Stakes won before stablemate

Crosshaven (Smart Missile) kicked back to get

the decision in a photo. "They both ran well.

Crosshaven probably benefited from the slow

tempo and he gave a really good kick," Dabernig

said. "There was a big gap to the third horse. If

Crosshaven wasn't there, there wouldn't be any

talk about Aysar running out the mile."

Spring Stakes Obvious targetDavid Payne will saddle three-year-old filly

Obvious Step (Sidestep) in the Spring Stakes

(Gr 3, 1600m) at Newcastle on Saturday, as she

takes on 1600 metres for the first time. She only

has one win from her first seven starts, but has

been racing as though the step up in trip to a

mile will suit her. "She's got a lot of ability but

she does a lot of things wrong," Payne said. "If

she settles, she should be thereabouts. You've

got to ride her cold and it's a nice long straight

so we will give her a chance and see if she's up

    to it."

Trumbull to peak for HunterKim Waugh believes Sydney Stakes (Gr 3,

    1200m) winner Trumbull (Darci Brahma)

is ready to take another step forward in The

Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle on Saturday. The

five-year-old had a tendency to blow the start in

his races in the first half of this year but Waugh

believes his Randwick win has helped him

turn a corner. “It was the weirdest thing what

he was doing,” the trainer told Racing NSW. “It

wasn’t like he was a barrier rogue, normally if

horses are missing the start they are tense in

there and carrying on but he was nothing like

that. It was quite frustrating because he is such

a sensible and cool horse. It was holding us

back from going to the next step in our plan. On

the last couple of runs last prep and his trials

now it looks like he’s confident and jumping

nicely and we hope it stays like that. I was really

pleased with the way he trialled and the way

he has pulled up and is working. The Sydney

Stakes is a good marker for good horses, it’s very

exciting and we’re hoping it all works out.”

Gollan keen on KroneThe Tony Gollan-trained Krone (Eurozone),

    who connections were considering sending

to the breeding barn, will return to the track

in the Keith Noud Quality Handicap (Listed,

1200m) at Doomben on Saturday. The five-

year-old mare’s last start came when winning

the Glasshouse Handicap (Listed, 1400m) in

July and Gollan believes she will go well on

her return, despite an unfavourable barrier

(13). “She’ll race well but from her barrier we’ll

have to ride her quiet,” Gollan told Racing

Queensland. “She’s in good order but she’d be

better suited off a better draw. She’ll have her

next run in a fillies and mares race in two weeks

and her ultimate aim is the Magic Millions

    Fillies and Mares race.”

64 for SebringBlack On Gold (7 g ex Fools Gold by Commands)

battled well under a smart ride from Brenton

Avdulla to take out the Ladies Day Cup (Listed,

    1600m) at Hawkesbury yesterday, providing

Sebring (More Than Ready) with his 64th

individual stakes winner in the process. Sent

off a $19 chance, the Chris Waller-trained Black

On Gold cut the corner entering the straight and

pulled clear of the field up the inside, defeating

Archedemus (Lope De Vega) by three-quarters

of a length, with Savacool (Savabeel) two lengths

behind the winner in third. Despite having won

seven times in 43 previous starts, yesterday’s

win was a first at stakes level for the seven-year-

old. Sebring, winner of the 2008 Golden Slipper

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) stood at Widden Stud

before dying from a heart attack aged 13 last year.

Impressive Nantucket sets new track recordNantucket (Rubick) could be aimed at the Inglis

Race Series following his track-record run in a

1000-metre maiden at Bendigo yesterday. The

    three-year-old gelding had finished runner-up

in his three previous starts but was well-fancied

to break his maiden yesterday, being sent off the

$1.65 favourite under Joe Bowditch. Nantucket

lived up to market expectations by defeating

Flying Finch (Redente) by a length, with Real Gun

(Reward For Effort) a further length behind in

third. Trainer Levi Kavanagh was impressed with

the effort and expects further improvement from

the son of Rubick (Encosta De Lago). "It was nail-

biting towards the end there, but he (Nantucket)

got stuck into his work and reeled off some good

late sectionals and just got there,” Kavanagh told

Racing.com. “I'm sure Joe was riding as hard as

he could, I'm sure he didn't want to run second

again. There's still a lot of improvement to come

because I'm hopeful of stepping him through his

grades this time in. I didn't want him ready to go

straight away so that was a great run and he'll take

    great improvement from the race."

Oaks target for MontefiliaDavid Payne still has confidence that Montefilia

(Kermadec) can win an Oaks, despite the filly’s

defeat as an odds-on favourite in the Victoria

Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington last week.

Montefilia finished two and a half lengths

behind winner Personal (Fastnet Rock), with

Salto Angel (Sacred Falls) splitting the pair, but

Payne believes the three-year-old still has more

to give, with the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)

at Randwick in April her next major target. "She

stays. She fought them all off until the last 20

metres and that's when she'd just had enough,"

Payne said."When she gets back we will have a

look at the program but that (Australian Oaks)

will be on the agenda for sure," he said. "We

haven't seen the best of her yet."

Racing NSW relaxes Covid restrictionsFollowing 12 days of no Covid-19 cases in

Victoria, Racing NSW has announced a

relaxation to its Covid-19 restrictions. Horses

will now be allowed to move across the NSW/

Victorian border and are permitted to travel

from Victoria into NSW directly to a racecourse

or licensed premises. The NSW government has

announced that effective 12:01am on November

23, the border between NSW and Victoria

will reopen, which will allow people to travel

from Victoria to NSW racecourses or licensed

premises without having to self-isolate. People

travelling from New Zealand will also be able to

attend a NSW racecourse or licensed premises

    without having to self-isolate.

Zoustyle off to the paddockThe Tony Gallon-trained Zoustyle (Zoustar)

has been ruled out of the summer carnival

after suffering a minor soft tissue injury in a

    suspensory. The five-year-old gelding, who

has won seven of his 11 starts, was last seen

taking out a 900-metre open handicap in mid-

    September. Connections are hopeful that

Zoustyle can return for the winter carnival after

a frustrating 15 months, which has seen him

    race only five times.

Stephens joins YulongTroy Stephens has joined Yulong Farm as their

new nominations and sales manager. New

Zealand-born Stephens will relocate from New

South Wales after six years at Newgate Farm. “We

are very excited to have Troy come aboard,” said

Sam Fairgray, chief operating officer at Yulong.

“I’ve known Troy for many years, and we’ve

worked closely together in the past. He’ll be a

wonderful asset to the team. He has passion and

enthusiasm for the industry and, over many years,

has developed an excellent reputation among

breeders.” Stephens added: “Yulong is a new

chapter for me. I’ve admired Mr Zhang’s vision for

a long time, and he’s got big goals and aspirations.

Victoria has proven to be an elite source of

champions in recent years, and Yulong is right

there in partnership with Victorian breeders.”

Storm ends Bendigo meetingYesterday’s meeting at Bendigo was abandoned

after two races due to an electrical storm.

    Racing Victoria's presiding chief steward

at Bendigo, Rob Montgomery, delayed the

running of the third race for 40 minutes but had

to call the meeting off due to lightning activity

surrounding the racecourse. "We had to delay

for as long as we have as if there's a lightning

strike on-course we can't race for 30 minutes,"

Montgomery said. "Lightning strikes are still

happening all over the place and we've been in

touch with the Bureau of Meteorology and they

said there's another electrical front coming

and there's a possibility the two fronts might

    merge."

    Thornton back in action

Damien Thornton will return to the saddle

with four rides at Pakenham this evening, after

being ruled out through injury since August 31.

Thornton suffered five fractures and ligament

damage when riding Surangani (Ready For

Victory) in a 1000-metre maiden at Pakenham,

with his right foot getting caught between two

horses in a freak accident. Thornton has also

lined up four rides for tomorrow’s fixture at

    Kyneton.

Robertson remains in hospitalTiarnna Robertson is still in hospital after

Fabergino (Maschino) broke her trainer’s leg

when kicking out a few days before the Darley

Sprint Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) last week. West

    Australian trainer Robertson has undergone

surgeries since being in hospital and is likely

to remain in Victoria for at least another few

days. “I’ve had a couple of surgeries over the

last couple of days, so I think I’m going to be

in Victoria for another couple of weeks until

I am given the all clear to travel,” Robertson

told Racing.com. “They put a rod in because

it snapped my tibia and fractured it lower.

I’m hoping to get out (of hospital) in the next

couple of days.” Robertosn revealed she has

had problems with stable star Fabergino in

the past: “She’s pretty cranky. She’s done

something similar to my face before,” she said.

“I’ve got quite a few screws in my face. She’s

    temperamental, but she’s usually manageable.”

    NEW ZEALAND

Hypnos adds Coupland’s Bakeries to recordCambridge visitor Hypnos (Reliable Man)

showed a good turn of foot to put his rivals to the

    sword when winning yesterday’s Coupland’s

Bakeries Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Riccarton for

Roger James and Robert Wellwood. Sent out

the $4.10 favourite, the five-year-old gelding

enjoyed a cosy run behind the leaders under

Danielle Johnson and was extracted at the

right time to score by a length and a half

    from Tobilicious (Natural Destiny), with

Communique (Redwood) in third. “That was

brilliant,” Wellwood said. “We have been down

here a week just with him and just thinking

about this race, so it is a big relief to get the job

done and it’s lovely to see him win so nicely. We

sat down at the start of the season and looked

for a target for the horse and identified this race.

To get it done is awesome. It's not a Group 1 but

it is probably my biggest win and it is just super

to have a plan and see it come off.” Hypnos

is raced by Fran and Ron Dixon after James

purchased him for the Wellington couple from

the Westbury Stud draft for $50,000 during the

2017 Select Yearling sale at Karaka. Westbury

Stud will offer a Redwood (Pyrus) half-brother

to Hypnos, listed as lot 30.

Three for ProisirRich Hill Stud resident Proisir (Choisir) sired

his third stakes winner when Aimee’s Jewel

(4 m ex Aimee’s Idol by Colombia) fought out

the finish to yesterday’s Canterbury Breeders’

Stakes, (Gr 3, 1400m) at Riccarton with her

close relation Irish Girl (El Roca). Aimee’s

Jewel powered home from last to claim her

maiden stakes success at start five, half a

length in front of her niece, Irish Girl. Aimee’s

Jewel is the seventh foal of Listed winner

Aimee’s Idol (Colombia). Aimee’s Idol won

six times and twice recorded stakes placings

including second in the Foxbridge Plate

    (Listed, 1200m). She ranks as a three-quarter

blood sister to the Singapore stakes winner

Ready To Strike (Colombia). Both descend

from the speedy Kingston Star (Biscay), a

dual Listed stakes winner in Melbourne. Irish

Girl is out of two-times winner Aimees Babe

(Postponed), the first foal of Aimee’s Idol

    and therefore a half-sister to Aimee’s Jewel,

keeping the lion’s share of the prize-money

in the family. Aimees Babe died in 2018 and

Irish Girl is her only foal.

Second Stewards Cup for Prince OzEmotions were running high after Prince Oz

    (O’Reilly) landed a knock-out blow in the

Stewards Stakes Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at

Riccarton yesterday. Sent out a $31 chance, the

nine-year-old wound back the clock to win the

race for the second time in his career, having

saluted for Neill Ridley in 2018, who prepared

the gelding to win on eight occasions, including

seven in succession. Ridley, 67, who had cancer,

died peacefully at his home last month, 13 days

after he had his last two starters, including

Prince Oz, who ran sixth on that occasion. Now

in the care of local trainer Terri Rae, Prince Oz

became Rae’s sixth winner of New Zealand Cup

(Gr 3, 3200m) week in a fitting tribute to the late

Ridley, with several of his family and friends on

track. “It’s a pretty emotional win,” said winning

jockey Terry Moseley. “Full credit to Terri and

the team. She has produced this horse in great

order but as you can appreciate we’re a man

down this year and we’re really missing a good

mate in Neill. He was a great man in racing and

a good supporter of mine.” Bred and raced by

the Connors family of Wanganui, the veteran

galloper had 11 starts for Raymond Connors for

one win before transferring south and proving a

revelation in Ridley and now Rae’s care.

Alexander hoping for fairytale returnComeback trainer Katrina Alexander is hoping

to cap a fairytale return to racing when saddling

    favourite Tinker McPhee (Nostradamus) in

    Saturday’s Barneswood Farm New Zealand

    1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton.

Alexander reapplied for her trainer’s licence

last season in partnership with husband Simon

to fulfil the request made by her son Jackson

shortly before his passing in June last year from

skin cancer. Alexander is pinching herself that

after a five-year hiatus from racing she enters

with a leading chance of bog race glory so

soon into her return, and she is pleased with

the progress of Tinker McPhee since her eye-

catching run for third in the James And Annie

Sarten Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). “It has

been business as usual with her and she has

remained very consistent in her work and she

has continued to eat well. I couldn’t be happier

with her,” Alexander said. “After her last run

it gives me a lot of confidence she will get the

mile. We had no option but to drop her back

due to the wide draw that day, but that was a

good test to get her to settle and to run on over

a further trip.” Sam Weatherley retains the ride

and will be aided by barrier two, which gives

the versatile filly plenty of options. “Just looking

at what’s drawn around us, I imagine she will

try and hold her place rather than needing to

drop back, but we will let it unfold around us,”

    Alexander added.

Chittick reflects on Aegon’s Group 1The win of Aegon (Sacred Falls) in last Saturday’s

    New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)

provided cause for triumphant reflection from

powerhouse breeders Waikato Stud. Bred and

sold by the Matamata nursery, Aegon has come

a long way in a short time for trainers Murray

Baker and Andrew Forsman, with the latter

joined in the ownership by the Zame family.

“The 2000 Guineas is one of the ultimate tests for

three-year-olds in our country,” Waikato Stud’s

Mark Chittick said. “As well as it being the best

horses that you can gather, and it was another

good field on Saturday, most of them have that

extra test of handling the travel south as well.

We are just trying to breed the best racehorses

we can and the consistency of results in a race

like the 2000 Guineas helps you think that you

are doing the odd thing right.”

    HK: Beat The Clock retired

Champion Hong Kong sprinter Beat The

Clock (Hinchinbrook) has been retired after

sustaining a tendon injury. The Australian-bred

four-time Group 1 winner retires with a record

of ten wins from 25 starts and remarkably

only finished unplaced on one occasion. He

    amassed AUD$9,324,775 in prize-money and

will return to Australia to live out his days at

Living Legends alongside former Hong Kong

champion sprinter Silent Witness (El Moxie).

"We are very proud of his efforts and happy to

have provided long time friends and clients

the Chung family with such a great horse," said

Bill Mitchell from Mitchell Bloodstock, who

purchased Beat The Clock for NZ$200,000 at

the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale

Four for BelardoBelardo’s (Lope De Vega) fantastic year continued

when his son Belloccio (2 c ex Three Cards by

    Mastercraftsman) maintained his unbeaten

record in yesterday’s Criterium du Languedoc

(Listed, 1600m) at Toulouse and in the process

provided his sire with his fourth individual stakes

winner. Trained in Britain by David Menuisier,

Belloccio followed up his recent win at Salisbury

by defeating favourite Cirona (Maxios) by a length

and a quarter. Kergrist (Milanais) was another

neck away in third. Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo

will have his first southern hemisphere two-

year-olds this season, while Darley this week

announced Belardo would stand at Kildangan

Stud in Ireland for an unchanged €10,000 (approx.

    AUD$16,150) in 2021.

FR: Directa takes out Fille De l’Air Directa (Anodin) continued her good form to

take out the Prix Fille de L’Air (Gr 3, 2100m) at

    Toulouse yesterday. The Joel Boisnard-trained

last appearance and continued her progression

under Theo Bachelot, storming clear in the final

100 metres to defeat All Rumours (Shamardal)

by a length. Dariyza (Dawn Approach) was a

further three quarters of a length back in third.

Directa’s win provided Anodin (Anabaa) with

under their belts for the Haras du Quesnay

    sire.

to establish himself as one of the stallion ranks'

brightest stars, with his record including 125

    black-type performers achieved at a strike-rate

of 14.5 per cent stakes horses-to-runners.

"Lope De Vega's rise to the very top of the

    stallion ranks continues," said Ballylinch

Derrinstown Stud to stand for an opening 2021

fee of €7,000 (approx. USD$11,330). Trained

by Richard Hannon, the colt won a maiden at

    Nottingham before finishing a commendable

second to Magna Grecia (Invincible Spirit) in

the 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m). He reappeared

later in the year to land Sandown’s Fortune

    BY RON MITCHELL OF BLOODHORSE

    As the Keeneland November

    Breeding Stock Sale moved into

    Book 2 after a one-day Book 1

that saw eight horses sell for

US$1 million or more, the seven-figure glass

ceiling proved elusive during the Tuesday

    session.

With vendors and buyers taking advantage

of another stunning fall day in Central

Kentucky, trade continued at a measured

pace, topped by the five-year-old mare Pollara

    (Camelot) purchased by French-based Ecurie

des Monceaux and partners for US$975,000

    (approx. AUD$1.338 million) from Claiborne

    Farm, agent.

    Keeneland reported 197 horses grossed

$27,690,000 Tuesday, down 24 per cent from

the comparable session a year ago when 237

changed hands for an aggregate $36,505,000.

The session average fell 9 per cent from

    $154,030 to $140,558, and the $100,000 median

price represented a decline of 20 per cent from

$125,000 in 2019. The 84 horses that went

unsold was 30 per cent of the total through the

    ring.

    Cumulatively, 331 horses have changed

hands for gross receipts of $80,257,000

(approx. AUD$51.72 million), which is 26

per cent less than the $108,004,500 paid for

403 at the same point a year ago. The average

price is down 10 per cent to $242,468 (approx.

    AUD$332,720)from $268,001, and the $140,000

    (approx. AUD$192,100) cumulative median is

down 24 per cent from the $185,000 figure in

2019. The RNA rate is 28 per cent through two

    sessions.

    Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of

sales operations, said the session saw broad-

    based international participation.

"This is where the world comes to buy,"

he said. "If you looked at the leaders at the

end of the day, you had European, American,

European, Japanese, American - there was a

great mix of people and we hope that continues.

"In comments from buyers, they (horses)

are bringing prices they didn't think they were

going to bring and have been surprised at the

strength of it," Russell said. "Some consignors

said they were expecting to get 'X' (amount)

    and were getting more."

    Shannon Arvin, Keeneland president-

elect and interim head of sales, said internet

and telephone bidding continued to be an

important part of the November market, with

92 internet bids resulting in 12 horses sold for

more than $2.5 million (approx. AUD$3.43

    million).

As has been the case with most every

other auction over the past several years, the

    best-bred and conformed weanlings and

broodmares with offspring that have proven

themselves on the track or are in foal to proven

and promising young sires attracted the most

    attention.

Russell said the overall market is impacted

by fewer mares and weanlings being entered in

the sale due to concerns over effects of Covid-19

on the economy, and was reflected in this year's

November sale catalogue being smaller than

    last year.

"The weanling market is always a polarised

market," Russell said. "They always have

another option later on. Some of the horses

might be kept for yearlings. People realise that

in the yearling market you're selling your crop

so you really do have to show up.

"In November, you're selling the factory

(mare) or you're selling the foal and (they say) I

don't have to sell the factory this year. I can wait

and see if the market is better next year and I

don't have to sell the foal. I can wait and sell it

as a yearling. You have those business decisions

    being made."

Acting on behalf of a group of new owners

from Dallas, Texas, operating under the Band

of Brothers name, Lane's End Bloodstock's

David Ingordo and West Point Thoroughbreds'

Terry Finley struck late to purchase the five-

year-old mare Dothraki Sea (Union Rags) for

    $560,000 (approx. AUD$768,450). Consigned

by Claiborne Farm, the mare bred in Kentucky

by SF Bloodstock is in foal to Constitution

    (Tapit) .

Out of the unraced mare Mini Chat (Deputy

Minister), Dothraki Sea is a half sister to Grade

1 winner Dixie Chatter (Dixie Union) and to

Grade 3 winner Rumor (Indian Charlie). Her

first foal is a Curlin (Smart Strike) colt foaled

    earlier this year.

"She's a beautiful mare; typical of the

Union Rags," Ingordo said of the mare who

had two wins as a three-year-old. "She had a

little race record. The mare has a Curlin colt

and Constitution is an up and coming sire. It's

a pedigree I know and respect. She's the whole

    package."

"It's a group from Dallas that wanted to get

into the broodmare business so they reached

out to me," Finley said, noting his experience

is more with racehorses so he reached out

to Ingordo and the Lane's End team. "They

wanted really top-end mares and I thought she

    was a beautiful mare.

"Everybody is game and wants good

quality horses," Finley said of the weanling

    and breeding stock market. "It's a top-quality

game. The weanlings are very tough to get sold.

It looks like the numbers are good. The people

selling good broodmares have had smiles on

their faces the last couple of days.

"Although the number of people on

the Keeneland grounds is sparse since the

sale company has limited attendance to

    only essential individuals, those participating

in the auction are intent on buying

horses, said consignor James Keogh of

    Grovendale.

"We have taken 16 horses up there (to the

sale ring) and only not sold one," Keogh said.

"It's been a very good day. It's light, but the

people who are here are here to buy horses.

    There are no tire-kickers here."

Topping the Grovendale group was the

stakes-placed Charge Back (Take Charge Indy),

in foal to City of Light (Quality Road) purchased

    by Corser Thoroughbreds for $330,000.

"She's a beautiful, beautiful mare who had

been popular at the barn," Keogh said. "It's a live

family and the City of Light foals have sold well."

    TREVOR MARSHALLSEA | @ANZ_NEWS

We all know the definition of

    insanity as stated by Albert

    Einstein: Doing the same

    thing over and over but

    expecting different results.

Yet with all due respect to the man,

mentioned in dispatches as being no midweek

maiden above the shoulders, doing the same

thing repeatedly and seeing the same result

    isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

It’s been proven a brilliant tactic, in fact, in

the creation of Godolphin’s latest poster boy

Bivouac, who stormed to an imperious third

Group 1 victory - while largely keeping things

all in-house - in the Darley Sprint Classic at

    Flemington last Saturday.

The four-year-old entire is one of several

star products to have emerged from a Darley

    philosophy, part-learned from breeding

maven Bob Peters, of sticking with a mating

you believe will work. Bivouac is the third of

four full-siblings, by Exceed And Excel out

of the More Than Ready mare Dazzler, and

another’s on the way. But more about that

    later.

Bivouac (meaning a soldiers’ camp without

tents or cover), descends from a cornerstone

of Darley’s Australian operations, his third

dam Camarena. A daughter of Danehill and

the Marscay mare Canny Miss – an unraced

half-sister to outstanding full siblings Canny

Lad and Canny Lass – Camarena won almost

a million dollars through nine wins from 1050

metres to 2400 metres, the furthest being the

Group 1 Queensland Derby in 1999.

She was also the very first mare purchased

by Sheikh Mohammed when he set up camp

in Australia in 2001, in a near seven-figure

deal brokered by another pillar of breeding,

    Yarraman’s Arthur Mitchell.

    Camarena’s presence in Bivouac’s

bloodlines sticks out for a couple of reasons.

Aside from the obvious racetrack quality of

such a versatile Group 1 winner, the New

Zealand-born mare is the only non-American

among the eight names three generations

back in the pedigree, the tier featuring sires

such as Danzig, Southern Halo and Elusive

    Quality.

Those early years in Australia represented

something of an expeditionary force for Darley,

which bred and sold yearlings at the time. One

was Camarena’s third foal Camarilla, by the

aforementioned Elusive Quality. Bought by the

    Inghams’ Woodlands operation for $900,000,

she only won two races from 13 starts, but they

were the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce and the

    Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude.

Camarilla was therefore something of a

good one to let go, but when Darley set up more

fully in 2008 – buying out Woodlands’ stock

(lock and barrel) – they got her back.

That year, Darley put her to another

American in More Than Ready to produce

Dazzler, a filly who won her first two starts at

Geelong and Flemington but couldn’t repeat

the trick in nine more tries.

But far more racetrack success was to come

with Camarilla’s second foal. Sent to Exceed

And Excel, she threw the outstanding filly

    Guelph, a four-time Group 1 winner, including

    Randwick’s Sires Produce-Champagne

Stakes double in the 2013 autumn, and her

    Flight Stakes-Caulfield Guineas successes

that spring. (A year after Guelph, Camarilla

also threw eventual Group 2 Todman Stakes

    winner Ghibellines, by Shamardal, proving

her breeding quality before her untimely death

    after just four foals.)

Camarilla going to Exceed And Excel had

been a risk. It involved a very close 2x3 cross of

Danehill, that champion stallion being the dad of

Exceed And Excel, and the granddad of Camarilla,

via Camarena. But another old line holds that

this sort of thing is called “line breeding” when it

works, and “in breeding” when it doesn’t. In the

case of Guelph, it was the former.

    So when Guelph’s half-sister Dazzler

started breeding, Darley had no hesitation

dabbling with the same sort of alchemy, and

putting her to Exceed And Excel. Not once, but

for her first three matings, producing three-

    quarter brothers to Guelph.

The first was Coruscate, the now six-year-

old gelding who’s won eight races for Godolphin

and half a million dollars, capped by a Listed

1200-metre double at Caulfield this spring.

The second was Sparks, who had three

unplaced runs for Godolphin before being

shuffled along, and is now a five-year-old

gelding getting about in country New South

Wales to no great effect. (OK, maybe this sort of

thing doesn’t work every single time, although

every rule needs an exception to prove it).

The third one along was Bivouac, winner of

    $5.5 million and counting.

Gambles, or experiments, like these are the

sort you can take when you’re not producing

horses to please yearling sales buyers, as

Darley’s head of sales Alastair Pulford says.

“When we sent Camarilla to Exceed And

Excel, it was an interesting mating at the time

because it involved very close in-breeding

to Danehill, which most people wouldn’t

espouse,” Pulford tells ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Breeding Guelph was a risk, 2x3 to

Danehill, but the physicals matched: Camarilla

was a beautiful big strong mare, so we weren’t

worried about breeding a little light-boned ratty

thing, because that’s not what either parent

was. And Guelph was a big strapping filly, who

    could obviously run.

“So then to breed a three-quarter relation

was reasonably obvious, especially since More

Than Ready (Dazzler’s sire) matches so well

with that Danehill sireline. So there’s a lot of

Danehill in Bivouac’s pedigree, but we’d done

it before, it had been successful with Guelph,

so we weren’t scared to try it again, especially

since Danehill was another generation further

back in the female side. Plus the in-breeding to

Danehill is through a son and a daughter. If it

does work, it seems to work best that way.

“This is the beauty of breeding for ourselves.

A lot of commercial breeders may not go down

that path, for fear that yearling buyers would

be put off. We didn’t have to worry about that.

It’s the racehorse that’s going to judge our

breeding, rather than the yearling buyers. You

also get to develop these families, and you’re in

control of so much more then than when you’re

selling horses away at the sales.

“We’d also worked out Exceed And Excel

works very well with mares who could gallop. So

the year Guelph was bred, we sent every mare

who could run and that wasn’t by Danehill to

Exceed And Excel, including Camarilla. And

that’s the same crop (2010) from which Exceed

And Excel got Sidestep and Overreach. It was

a magnificent crop really, probably his second

best after this one (2016), which has now had

    Bivouac, Exceedance and Microphone.”

So persistence is a key theme. Dazzler now

    has a two-year-old filly by Medaglia d’Oro,

aptly-named Glittery, in training, and a yearling

colt by Lonhro. But she also has a filly foal on

the ground by Exceed And Excel, and has just

been covered by that stallion again.

    “It’s probably a lesson we’ve learnt from

others, including Bob Peters: if you think a

mating works don’t just try it once,” Pulford said.

    “Bob’s a good client, and he’ll repeat a mating

four of five times in a row without querying it.”

For example, Peters sent his mare Arcadia

to Coolmore’s Pierro two years running. The

results have been the stakes-winning Arcadia

Prince, and triple Group 1-winning little sister

Arcadia Queen, the other star of last Saturday

    through her Mackinnon Stakes win.

“Often it doesn’t work the first time, or

sometimes,” Pulford says, “but if you think it’s

the right idea keep going with it.”

Analysis: Back-to-back Group victories for favourite Hypnos who had this

under control from the 300m for career win five (including three stakes)

at start 22. He sat midfield, one out early, then found the rail leaving the

back straight and was able to improve to sixth past the 800m. Danielle

Johnson got him away from the fence and was in behind the leaders upon

straightening. At the 300m he got a nice split, drove through, then slipped

clear. Inside the 200m he had them in trouble, away by two lengths and to

the line was in no danger, full of running by a length and a half. Tobilicious

was second-last at the 1000m, still second-last at the 600m, then pulled

widest into the straight. Out in the centre of the track he kept up a long,

strong run and claimed second just short of the post. From midfield,

Communique rounded into the straight five deep, balanced and was the

main chaser from the 200m and only lost second at the line, the first three

well clear of the rest. Vigor Winner had every chance in the run home but

could only battle away for a distant fourth. [LJ]

    V: Wellfield Lodge

    Margins: 0.5 lens, 0.5 lens. Time: 1:24.51.Betting: $11.00, $26.00, $16.00.

Then followed: Nellie Bly (NZ), Belle Fascino (NZ), Severine (NZ), Scarfi (NZ), Karalino (NZ), Monza Circuito (NZ), All About Magic (NZ), Zabay (NZ), Quintuple Twins (AUS), Meara Mary (NZ), Kiwi Ida (AUS), Gifted (NZ) & Xcuses Xcuses (NZ), last.

Analysis: The least experienced runner in the field, Aimee’s Jewel

powered home from last along the inner and a big win, her third and

maiden stakes at just her fifth start. She drifted soon after the start and

was a clear last with no improvement past the 800m nor the 600m. Kept

to the fence into the straight, she got a lovely run through when the field

fanned. Accelerating along the inside she was only two lengths off the

lead at the 300m, moved out at the 200m, went up to the leader at the

100m and then drove into the lead from the 50m for a good win by a half

length. A super effort from Irish Girl who from a wide draw took up the

pace when they left the back straight and led them past the 600m, as well

as into the straight, where she tried to slip away. She was caught at the

100m but gave the winner a tussle before relenting over the final 50m. A

big finish too from Excelleration who sat last but wide at the 400m, then

flew down the middle of the track for a good third. Another to finish well,

Nellie Bly edged into fourth just short of the line. [LJ]

Analysis: The Stewards’ winner here two years ago, this time in an

upset, Prince Oz straightened with one behind him then put in a big

finish out in the middle of the track to claim win ten at start 31. From his

outside draw (14) he was wide early but dropped under the field to sit

second-last before they reached the crossing. Rounding into the straight

he went wider but was now last, improved three spots approaching the

200m and then powered after the leader. Inside the 100m he still had

more than a length to make up but momentum saw him shoot past the

leader and then go clear by a length and a quarter at the line. Rocanto

sat midfield but widest at the junction, then went forward four wide

starting the run home to soon after share the lead. He made what looked

like a winning break near the 200m but over the final 100m could not

withstand the winner’s burst. Puysegur sat in behind the leading group

into the straight, had bags of room at the 200m to challenge but couldn’t

accelerate when needed, keeping on gamely for third from Turncoat,

who flashed home late along the inner for fourth. [LJ]

SEBRING’S FASTEST, MOST BRILLIANT SON AT STUD!

    GREAT VALUE!

Analysis: In a surprise result, Black On Gold was a good first-up winner

at odds of $19, his first victory since taking out an Open Handicap

(2000m) at Rosehill in June 2018. He settled back in eighth place, on the

rails, tracking a solid tempo (first 1000m 60.15) before improving along

the inner at the turn. He got through to challenge at the 200m and then

finished best to score a good win. Archedemus went to the front as

expected and then set a solid pace. He was only overtaken at the 100m

and then fought well for second after running a bold race. Savacool

settled near the tail of the field, went deep on turning for home and she

then came with a late run to take third, narrowly in advance of the top

weight Mantastic who was seventh at the home turn before battling

on well for (2.2 lengths) fourth. Looks Like Elvis had a nice trip and
