MAHURANGI COLLEGE

Dear Parents and GuardiansTena Koutou Katoa

Well done to all students whose work was on display at this year’s Technology Evening, which was held towards the end of Term 3. It was good to see the variety of practical work and design boards, and we all enjoyed the delicious snacks throughout the evening from the Hospitality students. The Senior Fashion Design students then provided a wonderful fashion parade during which the students modelled their own creations over a wide range of styles, often featuring fabrics and designs which they had created themselves.

Gill Kearins ~ New Head of Faculty for Physical Education and HealthWe are thrilled to announce we have appointed Mrs Gill Kearins as our new Head of Physical Education and Health for 2016. Mrs Kearins joined the Mahurangi College teaching team during 2009 as a Physical Education teacher and in 2010 took on the role of Yellow House Dean. During 2015, she has been our acting Head of Faculty for Physical Education and Health, in a long term relieving capacity, while Mr Bill Husband has been on leave. After 20 successful years of leading the faculty, he has now retired and Mrs Gill Kearins has been appointed to this position. Before coming to New Zealand she taught PE for 7 years in the United Kingdom where she was in charge of the Senior PE curriculum in her school. During this time she played premier level hockey and prior to this, while she was at University, she represented British Universities in both hockey and cricket. She currently teaches Level 3 PE and is our Health Curriculum Co-ordinator, so she has a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of all strands of the New Zealand PE and

Health Curriculum. Gill believes her fresh approach to the department has invigorated the department and given them all a new drive to keep improving results and participation overall. While continuing to play premier level hockey herself, Gill has also continue her heavy involvement in extra curricular activities as she believes these to be of great value to the students, developing life long skills in leadership and teamwork, and that such involvement is a great tool for teachers to develop a good rapport with their students. She has successfully developed our Girls’ Hockey to a high standard, last year coming 1st in North Harbour with our Senior Girls so they now compete in the wider Auckland competition.Gill has gained a great amount of enjoyment, professional development and personal satisfaction from her many roles here. She appreciates the ethos that Mahurangi College promotes, recognising the importance of the all round development of young people. She admires the way in which Mahurangi College

offers a broad curriculum and the way in which a focus on academic excellence and rigor is balanced alongside extra curricular involvement and leadership opportunity.

The Mahurangi College Senior Open Underwater Hockey Team won gold at the NZ Secondary Schools National Championships held in Henderson during 3-6 September. The NZ Secondary Schools National Championship is the largest Annual Underwater Hockey Tournament in the world, with in excess of 40 teams and 450 players competing. Our Senior Open Team were undefeated throughout the tournament. They started the final on the back foot, with Wellington College scoring first, but the determined team came back strongly and were ahead 3-2 when the final whistle blew. Max Hargreaves and Forrest Axford were selected for Tournament Team. Forrest, who recently won Gold competing for New Zealand at the U19 World Championships in Barcelona, was named Top Male Player of the Tournament. John Su was MVP in the final, scoring one of the goals and assisting in both others. The other goals in the final were scored by Leo Arnerich and Elliott Sneddon. The College’s Junior Girls’ Underwater Hockey Team also qualified for the Nationals and finished a very respectable 4th place in New Zealand. Their team was nominated for Best Sportsmanship of the Tournament. Both teams were runners up for Top School Award.Mahurangi College would like to thank Terry Axford (Coach), Maxine Axford, Marg Hargreaves, Yi Su, Colin Snedden, Amy Buick and Luke Panui Leth for their massive contribution to the teams’ successes. We would also like to acknowledge inspirational young leaders, Lucy and Jorgia, two students who volunteer their time to coach the Junior Girls’ Team.
