Also plans to minor in applied dance and study creative writ- ing. In December, the West Branch Ruriteens collected items to send to a 1989 West Branch graduate currently serv- ing in the military. Col. Paul Nosek, a member of the United States Air Force and a 1989 West Branch graduate, was stationed at the embas- sy in Afghanistan at the time. The Ruriteens sent him a box of items to let him know how much his sacrifices were appreci- ated by those still at home. Nosek recently returned to the United States and was in the area visiting family and stopped by the high school to present the Ruriteens and the high school with a flag that flew over the embassy during his deployment. He presented the flag in a case, which can be viewed in the office area. The Ruriteens thank Nosek and his family for the sacrifices they have made in service to our country and wish him continued safety in his service. Ruriteens visited by Air Force colonel COLUMBUS The state Controlling Board released more than $1.9 million for capital improvements at Youngstown State University. A total of $894,844 will go toward a cam- pus lighting project, fixing aging conduits, poles and wiring and upgrading to efficient LED fixtures as part of an effort to restore full lighting along walk- ways and other exte- rior areas. Penn Ohio Electric of Masury sub- mitted the low bid for the work Another $878,754 will be used to upgrade classrooms and labs in Cushwa, DeBarto- lo and Ward Beecher halls, including new ceilings and flooring, lighting and electri- cal improvements. According to docu- ments, the areas “have not been renovated in several years and the wear and tear of the heavy use is starting to show.” The project will upgrade and improve these spaces and pro- vide a more functional, inviting and comfort- able environment that will meet minimum health and safety stan- dards. The Sebring Community Center on Texas Avenue will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for registra- tions for the free summer park program and to pur- chase pool passes. The cost for an individ- ual pass is $45 for Sebring residents, $60 for nonresi- dents. Family passes are $65 for Sebring residents (up to six family members in same house, with each additional person $10), and nonresident family passes are $100 (for up to six family members, $15 for each addi- tional, all in same house). The pool will open May 28, weather permitting. Senior Swim will begin every Tues- day and Thursday at 11 a.m. starting June 7. The free summer park The free summer park pro- program is for kids ages 5 to 12 and starts June 6. Held from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, breakfast and lunch is pro- vided. The following programs will take place: June 9 is Touch a Truck; June 14, the Green Team recycling staff will visit; June 16, the Mount Union Nature Cen- ter; June 17, pro wrestlers; June 23, the Akron Mobile Zoo; June 28, a scavenger hunt will take place; June 7, Green Team visit; July 14, Hot Pots; and on July 19, a magician will entertain.
