From The President’s desk---

In Rotary world, ‘December’ is designated as Family month. Family is a foundation and once it is secure and in perfect order, one can raise high to heights previously unimagined!! Author Robin S. Sharma has written a beautiful book, Family Wisdom and I can not resist temptation of giving some excerpts from the book --- There are five masteries to follow to take your family to a great height ---

1. Your family is your foundation. If your family culture has to grow into something vibrant and splendid then you become a leader and inspire everyone to make a contribution to the culture. You must create a gorgeous future-vision of the way you desire things to be for your family and share it with family members and do it in a way that excites them and engages their hearts. What you focus on life always ‘grows’ and what you think about ‘expands’. Awareness always precedes change. If you want to change something in life, you must first be aware of it and begin to pay attention to it. The tougher you are with yourself, the gentler life will be on you!

2. The second mastery is about trust building and opening the new lines of humanity. True

leadership lies in commending and not in condemning. The real and lasting happiness comes through the progressive accumulation of lovely memories and special moments. The behavior that is rewarded is behavior that gets repeated. To be a great leader at home, you must first be a model of integrity. You need to cultivate honesty to gain respect in the family and then to become magically influential.

3. The third mastery is to focus on greatness and not weaknesses. You recognize the strengths and concentrate on these talents so they expand and evolve. The four disciplines of personal greatness are envision daily, set goals weekly, walk with giants regularly and give graciously. The way to an extraordinary life lies in exploring ourselves, in learning of our greatest capacities and understanding that we are fundamentally as people. Then equipped with this essential knowledge, we can go out in the world to do what we have been wired to do and create the goodness that we have been placed here to create.

4. The fourth mastery of the family leader is about becoming the person you were meant

to be. It’s about becoming your best self and realizing full potential of your mind, body and spirit so you can be a great leader in your family. This mastery is all about self-renewal and self regeneration. You constantly push the envelope of your potential to grow stronger, wiser and more effective.

5. The fifth mastery is all about giving immortality through the gift of a legacy. Most of us

think that in order to leave a significant legacy, we must perform some truly great act. But in fact, all we need to do to leave a meaningful mark on the world is focus on performing small acts of greatness each and every day and the legacy will take care of itself. The point of wisdom is – pay attention and be aware of the inner voices that will lead you down the path of destiny. Listen to what your heart tells you to do and commit yourself to living out your destiny so you will leave a meaningful legacy.

All this is so true even to Rotary family!!

May the dawning of this New Year, fill your heart with new hopes, open up new horizons and bring for you promises of brighter tomorrows. Wishing you and your family a very Happy, Prosperous and Healthy New Year

A lecture was organized on the subject ‘Mudra Vigyan’ in our Club on 4th December 2010. The Lecturer, Smt. Nirmala Paradhi is working in Shishu Vihar School and has various academic accomplishments, the most important being a Doctorate in Manasik Tanav (Mental Stress). She is an avid practitioner and teacher of Mudra Vigyan (Finger Postures) and she enlightened our Club members with many aspects of this ancient science.

Ms. Paradhi on Mudra Vigyan

All five digits of our palm represent five elements of nature i.e. Earth, Wind, Space, Water and Fire. Our body and mind will be in sound health and shape if there is a balance among all the above five basic elements. She explained in detail how the various finger postures activate these elements and correct the imbalance in our system. Regular practice of mudras helps us to remedy many ailments like, diabetes,

blood pressure, constipation, etc. In fact, she suggested even heart ailment can be cured. These Mudra practices are to be done alone or in conjunction with other holistic treatment like Yoga, Meditation, etc. and can also be practiced with homeopathy and allopathic treatments. She demonstrated the following Mudras: Gyan Mudra, Purna Mudra, Vairagya Mudra, Abaya Mudra, Vayu Mudra, Abana Mudra, Simha Mudra, Prana Mundra, Linga Mudra, etc.

Members practicing Mudra

The session was extremely interactive and all the members participated and performed the Mudras with full enthusiasm and interest. The Lecturer communicated extremely well, the nuances of the various Mudras and how to perform them and what

likely benefits one can derive. This is a vast subject and due to paucity of time, we had to conclude the session and all the members agreed that we can have one more detailed session at a later convenient date and time.

All our Club members have a great interest in knowing and learning new subjects which are outside the purview of their normal personal and business life. Such informative lectures serve dual purpose, makes meeting interesting & improves attendance.

Members engrossed in Mudra

“The most important pieces of equipment you need for doing yoga are your body and your mind.” “Yoga does not remove us from the reality or responsibilities of everyday life but rather places our feet firmly and resolutely in the practical ground of experience. We don't transcend our lives; we return to the life we left behind in the hopes of something better.” “Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they are meant to be.”

The Official club Visit of District Governor (DG) is the most marathon scrutiny of the President’s tenure. The club needs to present meticulously the various activities and projects to the dignitaries. Our frame of mind & commotions on the day of OCV were no different than the routine. The Close door meeting of DG Mr. Jayant Kulkarni, AG Neena Kalra and DS Dr. Indumati Gopinathan with our officials, President Vidya & Secretary Suryakumar started at sharp 9 am. It lasted for half an hour. The club members waited in the main hall with great curiosity when all the dignitaries, President & the club secretary entered with smiling faces. The Close door discussion was seamless & smooth, the interaction and exchange of views, thoughts & ideas were very friendly.

DG was highly impressed by the packed activities and the projects completed by the club & appreciated that for the size of the club these activities are far beyond the expectations. DG had elaborate session with all project directors & club members. The outcome of the session is summarized below:

DG emphasized on the membership drive for the continuous growth & sustainability. This was very well taken by all the members.

DG insisted on regular visits to the adjacent clubs for continuous improvisation of the club.

He pointed out that the potential of growth at Wadala is very high since it is fast developing area of Mumbai. We all toyed with the idea of renaming the club as Rotary club of Mumbai Wadala, which was agreeable to DG & he informally guided us on formalities to be undertaken.

DG also added that the club culture should be a balanced blend of social gatherings, fun and activities for the uplift-ment of socially challenged group which is the motto of Rotary.

Dr. Indumati Gopinath was highly impressed by the OCV book which depicted a crisp picture of the club’s tenure of past semester. She further added that she wants to preserve this OCV book as an example of how the OCV Book should be!!

The whole credit goes to Rotarian Shobha for maintaining meticulous record of all the events conducted and not the least Rotarian Suryakumar for compilation of all data. Rotarian Manoj Kshirsagar motivated his neighbor Ms. Mrs. Sunita Padval for joining Rotary club. She is actively involved in pacifying the pains of those Cancer patients at Tata Memorial who are in the last stages & are left with no hopes. We are blessed to have such a member in our group. Thanks to Manoj.

On Christmas day our regular weekly meeting was held at Mr. Dilip Yande (Rtn. Swati’s husband) Photo Studio at Wadala. Rtn. Swati Yande took great pains to make this fellowship meeting a grand success. Rtn. Swati a gracious hostess at her best welcomed all the members with welcome drink. The agenda of meeting had important and tedious points – Budget, Formation of next year’s committee, but vibrant location and loving hostess elevated every ones’ mood resulting into smooth proceedings. Whole atmosphere was so charged that our new member Ms. Sunita mingled quickly with all. Mr. Dilip is an ace fashion photographer and his studio displays beautiful, artistic photographs of glamorous faces and alluring locations. This get together is a classic example of the fellowship and bonding amongst our members, which is one of the main motive of our Rotary objective. This get-together ended on a happy note with a lot of bonhomie and all the members looking forward for vigorous action in the coming year.

Today we are releasing the sixth bulletin of ‘Mahim Waves’ and it gives me great pleasure to announce that the mission of bulletin release which was started as back as year 2004, as a printed copy has been taken further. Later in the year 2007, it took the form of e-bulletin, but the release was not so regular. This year we thought that by putting little more efforts to release Mahim Waves monthly, our activities and projects will get wider visibility at the interclub and district level. Apart from this, all the events get well recorded, which would help future leaders. At this juncture I take opportunity to acknowledge the members, who have actively participated in the release of the bulletin.

1. President Vidya Kulkarni 2. Rtn. Vinayak Sahastrabudhye 3. Rtn. S Venkateswaran 4. Rtn. Swati Yande 5. Rtn. K Suryakumar

I would like to thank all the club members for their encouraging words and feedback. I feel very happy to share the applause received from various district dignitaries and co-presidents. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: Nayantara & Ashok Mahajan To: Shobha Karnik Sent: Wednesday, September 01, 2010 10:33 AM Subject: Re: [RI3140PRES1011] Bulletin of Rotary Club Mumbai Mahim - Mahim Waves Second Issue Dear Shobha, Millions of Congratulations for very informative and impressive Club Bulletin Of your Club which reached me just a while ago. Our club web-site was hosted in the year 2006 with the marathon efforts put in by Rtn Vinayak and Rtn Tanvi. However updation of site on a regular basis was a herculean task. Rtn. S. Venkateswaran took up the challenge and rejuvenated site with the help of his assistant Balbir. To save the expenses associated with regular updation our member Rtn. Vidula volunteered the responsibility of the Web Site Updation. Her expectations are that we communicate the updation in simple terms so that it is easier at her end to communicate to concern persons. With all these efforts, we are able to keep the Rotary Mahim Web Site updated with current projects and activities. To ensure that the site remains live, for the years to come we have to redesign the complete portal. Special thanks to all these Rotarians for making it possible to keep Web Site alive.
