The district of Raigad is located in south western sideof the State and stretches over 715.2 thousandhectares. Alibaug is the District Headquarter of theRaigad. The district is bounded by Mumbai Harbour tothe northwest, Thane District to the north, PuneDistrict to the east, Ratnagiri district to the south, andthe Arabian Sea to the west. The district is locatedbetween North latitudes 17.51’ to 19.80’and Eastlongitudes 72.51’ to 73.46’

Raigad is guarded by the Sahyadri Hills at one sideand Arabian Sea at the other side. The villages &towns are located in between Sahyadri Hills & ArabianSea. Amba, Kundalika, Bamangar and Savitri are themajor rivers of the region.

By rail, the Konkan Railway line starts at the Rohataluka and passes through the Mangaon taluka in thedistrict. The Central Railway Line of Mumbai to Punealso passes through the Karjat taluka of Raigad. PanvelJunction is the most important railway station in thedistrict; it is connected to Mumbai (by both theHarbour Line and Main Line of Central Railway), Thane(by Trans-Harbour Line), Roha, Vasai (WesternRailway) and Karjat.

Raigad is one of the important nodes of the upcomingDMIC (Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor) and in thenear future, the development of DMIC will lead to amassive expansion in industrial activity in the district.

Situated on the western coastal stretch of Maharashtra,the district includes the large natural harbour of Pen-Mandwa, which is immediately south of Mumbaiharbour. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Raigad, whichhandles a significant 11.82 per cent of India’s total cargotraffic and Raigad’s proximity to the Mumbai Port whichhandles 10.63 per cent of India’s total cargo trafficmake Raigad an opportune place to set up an industry.

Further, to its north, Raigad has the planned townshipof Navi Mumbai which has basic infrastructure worthINR 40 billion (USD 650 Million) already in place.Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University isthe only technical university in the state, which islocated at Lonere in Raigad. With the literacy ratehigher than the state’s average the availability of skilledlabour is major advantage for industries in the region.

► Power utilities are currently the biggestcontributor to growth of the Engineering sector.

► Raigad is one of the two districts in the Konkanregion of Maharashtra, which are the majorproducers of Alphonso variety of mangoes. Othertypes of Mangoes are also produced in largequantities in the district. Hence there exists anopportunity of production of processed foods suchas - Jam, Pickles, Juice, Jelly etc

► Raigad contributed a significant 11 per cent of theMaharashtra’s total production of 145,110 Tonnes ofinland fish

► The Konkan region of Maharashtra is also known forcashew production. A total of 11400 tons of cashewwas produced in the district in 2010-11. There existsan opportunity to make cashew syrup from Cashewapple and process and export dried nuts.

► Rice is primarily grown in all four districts of theKonkan region and production of rice has increasedat a steady rate over the past few years. Oncemilled, rice can be stored without refrigeration forover one year and subsequently processed. There isa huge potential of exporting rice-based value-addedproducts in Raigad owing to the availability of theraw rice.

Japanese Business Delegation Visits Maharashtra Events

A Japanese delegation comprising 25 members, led byMr. Masayuki Matsushita, Chairman, InternationalCommittee, Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren)met the Indian delegation headed by Mr. ApurvaChandra, Principal Secretary, Industries, Government ofMaharashtra on 14th March, 2014 in Mumbai.

This meeting was jointly hosted by the IndustriesDepartment and Maharashtra Industrial DevelopmentCorporation (MIDC).

The Japanese delegation visited Maharashtra to explorevarious opportunities available for Japanese companieswilling to invest in the State and to understand thecurrent policy initiatives taken by the Government ofMaharashtra to promote industrialisation and thepackage of incentives that the state offers to itsinvestors

During the meeting Mr. P. Anbalgan, Joint CEO ofMIDC gave a presentation elucidating the factors thatmake Maharashtra an attractive investment destination.

Further, Mr. Chandra addressed queries of the Japanesedelegation related to obtaining various approvalsrequired for setting up any business in the State andmentioned that the process of obtaining such approvalswill soon become significantly faster owing to theestablishment of the Investor Facilitation Cell – MAITRI.

The Japanese delegation also enquired about the topsectors to invest in the state. To answer this question,Mr. Chandra highlighted the key sectors viz.

A Business Delegation from Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren), Japan met Mr. Apurva Chandra,Principal Secretary, Industries and MIDC officials in Mumbai on March 14, 2014

Automobiles and Ancillary sector, Electronics sectorand Food Processing sector, and he also talked aboutvarious factors such as availability of raw material,skilled labour, Industrial infrastructure et.al, that makethese sectors among the top sectors which attracthuge investment in the State.

Adding further, Mr. Chandra said that the state leadsin the production of cotton, and there exists a greatopportunity for Japanese companies to set up textilemanufacturing plants in the state.

Later, discussions were held around the potentialdistricts and related advantages to set up industries intwo and three tire cities of these potential districts,which have relatively cheaper land rates, proximity andconnectivity to port including other benefits were alsobrought to the fore during the discussion.

Bilateral Meeting with Chinese Delegation Events

The Chinese delegation representing province ofChangsha, headed by Mr. Lianhong and comprisingrepresentatives from Sany Heavy Industries was invitedfor a business meeting with Industries Department andMaharashtra Industrial Development Corporation(MIDC).

This meeting was convened on the 11 March 2014 inHotel Leela in Mumbai. The representatives from boththe sides discussed on the investment opportunitiesavailable in Maharashtra and the best practices forinfrastructure development in industrial parks of India,particularly in Maharashtra as well as in China.

The bi- lateral meeting began with the representativesfrom both sides introducing Changsha and Maharashtrarespectively, which was followed by exchanginginformation on major industries and preferential policiesin their respective regions for attracting investments.

During the meeting, the Indian delegation spoke aboutMIDC’s successful land acquisition in Aurangabad anddevelopment that is taking place through a joint venturebetween the Government of Maharashtra and theGovernment of India.

Aurangabad is one among the most industrialiseddistricts in the State and it was proposed during themeeting that a part of Aurangabad District could bedeveloped into a Chinese Industrial Cluster which willbe dedicated for Chinese companies to set up theirmanufacturing units in that particular cluster.

Later, a representative from Sany Heavy Industries Ltd.shared his experience of the company being one of thefirst movers in the state from China and shared hisexperience on the journey of extensive growth of Sanyheavy industries in Maharashtra due to the supportivepolicies of the State Government.

Representatives from Sany Heavy Industries Ltd. alsomentioned about their intentions to expand theirexisting facility in Maharashtra.

Further, the Chinese delegation committed to providetheir full support to the Maharashtra government toattract investments from those Chinese companiesthat have a substantial market in India.

The Chinese delegation concluded by suggesting thatmore visits and P2P (Person to person) meets shouldbe organised. They invited Mr. Apurva Chandra,Principal Secretary of Industries Department , Mr.Bhushan Gagrani CEO, MIDC and others present inthe meeting, to visit the city of Changsha in China.

In 2009, the German premium car maker moved into itsworld class production facility spread over 100 acres inChakan, near Pune. This plant earned the benchmark ofbeing among the fastest green-field operations ever tobe created and is rated among the top most CKD plantsof Mercedes-Benz, globally .

An excellent industrial infrastructure, growing market,increasing demand and investor friendly policy of theState government of Maharashtra are the ingredients ofMercedes-Benz’ success story in Maharashtra. Mercedesplant in Chakan, Pune is rated amongst the bestassembly plants within the Daimler world. TheMercedes Benz India’s paint shop technology is abenchmark and has no parallel so far.

Mercedes-Benz India has achieved the distinction ofbecoming the only market to start the production ofthe second generation GL-Class full-size luxury SUV,outside Mercedes-Benz’s SUV plant in Tuscaloosa, USA.The roll-out of the all new second generation GL-Classfrom Mercedes-Benz India’s world-class plant in Chakannear Pune in Maharashtra, reiterates Mercedes-Benz’saggressive product portfolio for the Indian market andalso underlines the company’s long-term strategy andcommitment.

Experience Excellence at Mercedes Chakan Unit

The Centre of Excellence is located at theMercedes-Benz premises in Pune. Pune is one ofthe biggest industrial towns of Maharashtra. It hasan international airport that operates domesticas well as international flights. It is well connectedby road as well as rail. There is also a world-classhelipad within the premises.

After 19 years of operations in India, Mercedes rolledout its 50,000th car. The first car rolled out from theplant on March 31, 1995, and the 50,000th rolled outfrom Chakan on January 28, 2014. This was marked bythe launch of a C-Class Grand Edition. The C Class isone of the largest selling in the mid-sized luxury carsegment. The C-Class Grand Edition is priced at INR39.16 lakh for the diesel and INR 36.81 lakh for thepetrol variant.

Mercedes-Benz India is expanding its portfolio of carsassembled in India. Mercedes-Benz has also lined up 10new launches for 2014, two of which will be unveiledat the Auto Expo.

Mercedes-Benz India is in the process of expandingannual capacity of the Chakan plant from 10,000 unitsto 20,000 units. The expansion of the factory is in itsfinal stage. German auto maker has also decided toundertake a 1,500-crore brownfield expansion of itsChakan unit, handling passenger car, buses and truckchassis.
