Magnolia School
Expectations:
Be Positive
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Celebrate Success
OCPS Vision: To be the top producer of successful students in the nation.
OCPS Mission: To lead our students to success with the support and involve-
ment of families and the community.
OCTOBER 2016
2016-2017 is the year we start planning for a “newly built” Magnolia School. Several
meetings have already taken place through visits by OCPS administrators involved with the
process of assessing the unique spaces that our students need in their school. Next year
(2017-2018) contractors will be hired, as well as an architect who will create the drawings
for our new school. During 2018-2019, Magnolia School will move (for a year) to another
vacated school site so that the current Magnolia building can be dismantled to make way
for the new building. This is great news for the Magnolia community. We have been look-
ing forward to getting a new facility for many years. Thanks also go to our School Board
Member Kat Gordon who has advocated for a new Magnolia.
Safety Update – Badge Reader Door Locks and Video Cameras have been installed and are
in process of becoming fully operational. Most of the video cameras are working and may
be viewed in 4 separate locations around the school. They are also visible at the district
office. Door locks accessible by staff badges have been installed. At this time only a few
are working but all should be up and usable in the near future. These upgrades to Magno-
lia will help us manage safety for students, staff and guests.
Our Healthy School Team (HST) for this year has been developed and plans are being de-
veloped to help bring greater awareness to a large number of health issues such as flu sea-
son, healthy eating, exercise, weight control, smoking cessation, etc. The committee head-
ed by our head nurse, Charis Aycock RN, will be busy this year thinking of ways to make
everyone healthier and happier. If you have any suggestions for the committee you are
welcome to provide them – feel free to write your thoughts in your child’s communication
book or send an email.

EMBASSY DOES IT AGAIN! The Make a Difference team for our wonderful Embassy Suites
Jamaican Court has done it again! Their annual book drive
resulted in a plethora of new books. This year, the books will
be used to support leisure skills in the Hotel Magnolia. For
over 16 years, Embassy Suites Jamaican Court has honored
Magnolia School by being our Adopt-A-School Partner for the
Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association. The intention of
the Adopt-A-School Program is to utilize the assets of the
hospitality industry to support one of our most valuable re-
sources – Our Children. Every year, our Embassy Family
shows this support in numerous ways. THANK YOU
Embassy for all that you do for our school and students!

Civitan, Magnolia School and Lake Nona High School recently entered into a part-
nership to help a junior at Lake Nona get a new scooter to increase her mobility
around the campus. Collaboration between Cynthia Hughes (Magnolia School So-
cial Worker) and the Social Worker at Lake Nona approached the Orlando Civitan (a
Magnolia School Partner In Education) for help. On September 29th the Lake Nona
student, her mother, Civitan, and both social workers met at FL Mobility on South
Orange Avenue. The owner James Weingarten showed several mobility options.
The choice was a new 3-wheeled red scooter. The store provided some customiza-
tion and the family was able to take the scooter home with them that same after-
noon. Thanks go to the Social Workers for overcoming an obstacle for this student.
Special thanks go to FL Mobility and Orlando Civitan for providing the financial
assistance.

3rd Annual Spooky Stroll and Roll a-thon Supports BCA Month
Wednesday, October 26, 2016
We are organizing a school-wide fundraiser this fall called “Magnolia’s 3nd Annual Spooky Stroll-&-Roll-A-Thon” with Halloween being our theme. We will have packets ready that include a
parent/guardian letter explaining the event and an envelope with an attached pledge form for each student to take home. Parents and guardians will be instructed to ask friends, family, etc.
to sponsor their child for this Stroll-&-Roll-A-Thon that takes place during the morning on Wed., October 26, 2016. Cash and checks should go in the envelope with the attached pledge form.
All envelopes need to be sent back to school by Wed, November 2 (one week after the event). Teachers, please give Wendy Lee your students’ collected envelopes at that time. Here’s a brief
description of the Fundraiser on the day of the event:
Where: Each class will meet outside at the Pavilion at their designated time (either 9am or 10:00am start time). We will use the track for the students and helpers/family to “stroll-&-roll”.
When: The fundraiser goes from 9 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. There will be 2 different teams starting at different times: Team Pumpkin and Team Ghost. Please find your classroom below to see what
time your class will participate.
Team Pumpkin – 9 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. -------- (Magnolia Team 1 and 2) - Ocasio, Conroy, Taylor, Lopez-Morales, Ballesteros, Smith, Machita, Adkins, Gordon, Candelario, and Day,
Team Ghost – 10 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. ------ (Magnolia Team 3 and 4) - Lopez, Tuck, Ais, Kaufman-Long, Creath, Rumeau, Jackson, Wilkins, Garcia, Barker, Peebles, Hernandez, and Carattini.
Who: Parents/family and guardians will be invited to come and stroll & roll with their child in costume if they like. Please advise parents and guardians of the time their child will be partici-
pating out on the track. All teachers, paras, family, etc. will help assist the students around the track. Each student will have an index card with his name on it in which he or the teacher will
hold during the walk to keep track of the # of laps. He will receive a sticker on the card for every lap he does. All participating students will receive a ribbon. There will be music, popcorn,
and waters.

On September 2, 2016, the Annual Transition Breakfast Tea hosted approximately 20 parents despite the incumbent weather. The
parents were informed of information to help their young adult’s transition from Magnolia to other opportunities after age 22. Kim
Bagley, Administrator, welcomed the parents and guests. Alida Hicks, CRT,
and Lisa Rodenberry, Bridges Coor- dinator shared updated information on
the Bridges Program for the stu- dents that are 18 to 22 years of age.
The Bridges Program is the last stop at Magnolia before exiting into the real
world. John Barnett and Alia Lee, staffing specialists, shared their roles in
helping the students to exit with all their requirements completed. They
also gave the parents binders to keep all of their young adults IEP
(Individual Educational Plans) infor- mation that has been gathered through-
out the student’s educational ca- reer. There are more of the binders
available in the front office. Dr. Andrea Hogan coordinator of the event, and Mr.
Jose Calderon, photographer assisted in this event. Mrs. Alice Flowers of Child-To-Parent Violence/Abuse (321.229.7688;
772.708.4759; www.themorningaftercenter.org) was a guest speaker. Cynthia Hughes, MSW social worker shared with parents, infor-
mation about resources available to those students exiting Magnolia this 2016-2017 school year. It was reiterated that parents of stu-
dents with challenging issues must have at least applied for APD (Agency for Persons with Disabilities) VR (Vocational Rehabilitation),
and guardianship or guardian advocacy if they have not already been obtained. Parents were invited to go on a parent tour of the
different Adult Day Centers. On September, 26, 2016, three parents toured Central Florida Contract Industry, an adult day training
facility, with Cynthia Hughes . If parents want to obtain information concerning Magnolia’s role in assisting students to transition to
“Life After 22”, please contact Cynthia Hughes, MSW at 407.296.6499 ext. 6272234
Annual Transition Breakfast Tea
I will have to say, that since the first day of school, when 3 adults who didn’t know each other came into a class of kids whom we didn’t know, we have all made huge strides as a class! My students, Stanley, Jinny and Veuntay, are adept on the computer and the Smartboard; Harold is mov-ing from just banging on the Smartboard to actually, purposefully engaging with it, and Luis actually seems to think before he answers on the smart-board because he doesn’t like the reaction he gets when he is wrong! They are learning different jobs in Student Services like punching holes in papers, categorizing, sorting, and delivery and are also becoming successful at their off-site jobs. Jinny and Stanley are learning to follow a schedule at the YMCA (including what materials they need for what jobs) and Veuntay and Luis are fitting in well with the Quest south schedule. I couldn’t just say a single positive praise, so, you get a paragraph instead!
