FOREWORD In compiling this pictorial history of 1937-38, the staff has endeavored to give to the students something that will be a storehouse of pleasant memories of happy days. Throughout we have tried to present an accurate and simple picture of the year's work. May the graduation exercises not end the work we have begun; but may our aims and ideals, born and nurtured here, grow and bear fruit in the years that lie ahead. Men do not care to forget great moments of their lives, and so we have endeavored to store a glowing coal that may be brought to flame at any time. That the 1938 MULERIDER may mean a great deal to you now and even more in the future is the one wish of the staff.

Starting the season with a sin
gle letterman, Coach Umbach
served his first year as basketball
coach by giving the school one of
rhe fastest and scrappiest teams
in Mulerider history.
Coach Umbach placed em
phasis on teamwork, spe~d, and
capable substitutes.
The only drawback to a great
team was inexperience. However,
with one year of varsity compe
tition the basketeers of '39 will
be tough oposition. Only four
players will be lost by graduation.

SOPtiOMO~tS
By superior weight and experience,
sophomores defeated freshmen in all in
tra-mural football games. Williford, soph
omore guard, shone in the forward wall
for the sophomores. Capitalizing on
every break and opportunity, the sopho
mores were never in danger of being
scored on by the freshmen. Substitutes
for the sophomores were May, Sanford,
Horner, Ogden, Blankinship, Rowe, El
more, Mason, Murphy, E. Smith, and
Park.

The Freshmen, handicapped by lack of
size and experience, put up stiff opposi
tion to the heavier and more experienced
Sophomores. H. Talley, B. Works, and
D. Gladney were the mainstays of the
Freshman team. These men will make
good college football material. Substi
tutes were Atchison, Avery, Bransford,
Corbin, Lawson, Linaker, Moore, and H .

Coach
W ith the return of seven lettermen and many promising rookies, the college
nine promises co provide trouble for any opposition. Bond, Overton, Bryant, Sex
ton, Harris, and Warren are che lettermen. They are capable of filling their posi
tions and with competent substitutes in Atchinson, Works, Talley, Sanford, Hinton,
H arrison, Williford, Puckett, and Wilson, there should be no trouble in rounding out a well-balanced team. Although the season is just underway, prospects are very good.
TENNIS
Under the new intra-mural athletic program, a larger group of students were able to enjoy a wider range of sports. The purpose of the new program was to give a majority of the students some form of recreation that interested them and would be beneficial to them. On this and following pages are scenes of some of the various sports and games, that included basketball, volley ball, soccer, archery, badminton, shuffle board, tumbling, folk dancing, and tap dancing.

Bun and Speedy had had enough of the leaks in their room. They summoned up all their courage and decided to talk to Mr. Overstreet about the matter.
They challenged him thus: Why that roof on our room is so bad that it rains on our heads. H ow long is char going to lase?
Mr. Overstreet: What do you think I am-a weather prophet?
* * * * * * * Mr. Graham: Did you read the letter I sent
you?
Dumb Co-ed who had been shipped: Yes sir, I read it inside and our. On the inside it said, "You are requested to leave college," and on the outside it said, " Return in five days", so here I am."
* * * * * * * Neville agrees with the sage who said'
"Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some just grate upon you."
M r. Haydon: Well, Warren, what have you been doing all afternoon?
Warren: Shooting craps. Mr. Haydon: That must stop, those little
things have just as much right to live as you have.
* * * * * * * Mary Frances: I wonder how old Miss Couch
is? Catherine: Quite old I imagine. They say
she used to teach Caesar.
* * * * * * * What made Jeanne a mental wreck? Why haven't you heard? Two trams of
thought collided in her mind.

Mr. Graham to Henry M ize: Henry, I hear your roommate is quite a bookworm.
H enry: If you stayed around him very long, you'd think he was a bed bug.

The freshman hung his head with shame. "I'm sorry, ma'am," he said, "But I'm working my way through college and your partner was waving a five dollar bill at me."
