50/50 RAFFLE, that was scheduled for Sunday,

March 22, has been postponed. The weekend AF-

TER Church opens and Masses resume, after 11am

Mass, the March-22 raffle will take place. If you

have tickets at home or want to participate in the

raffle, tickets will be available the weekend the

Church opens.

Lord Jesus,

Hear our pleas, our Good Shep-herd and Divine Physician. We im-plore your mercy in the wake of an outbreak of seri-ous illness and disease.

Guide our efforts to prevent contagion and make preparations to care for those most vulnerable. Assist all professionals and volunteers who work to eradicate the epidemic now spreading. May our actions be marked by your steadfast love and selfness service and never by panic or fear.

Bestow your comfort and healing to the sick, sustain and strengthen them by your grace. May they know your closeness as they carry the cross of illness.

And may all who have been called from this life come to worship you eternally with all the saints as you grant consola-tion and peace to their mourners. Amen.

Holy Mary, Health of the Sick, pray for us. St. Joseph, Hope of the Sick, pray for us. St. Rocco, protector against epidemics, pray for us.

OVERCOMING FEAR

Jesus had been abandoned by his disciples at the time of his death. One of them had turned him over to the authori-ties. Another had denied he even knew Je-sus. The others ran away, apparently in fear and horror.

READINGS

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (Divine Mercy Sunday)

Reading I: Acts 2:42-47 Psalm: 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24 Reading II: 1 Peter 1:3-9 Gospel: John 20:19-31

That same fear still gripped the disciples as they stayed behind locked doors. The risen Jesus suddenly appears among them, and there is not a word about their betrayal, de-nial, and abandonment.

“Peace be with you,” he says, as though nothing had ever happened. They look at his wounds, and he repeats his remarkable greeting: “Peace be with you.”

If only we could follow in the footsteps of Christ and wish peace to everyone! If only we could forgive as he forgave! Where would be the wars? the discrimination? the hatred? the death penalty? They would go the way of death itself, conquered by the resurrection.

Jesus assures us that we have received the Holy Spirit. We have the power to release others of their wrongs against us, just as we have the power to keep them and ourselves bound. Our Easter faith that we have “become a new creation” should strengthen our resolve to forgive as Christ forgave.

We urge our brothers and sisters in Christ to remember the teaching of Jesus, who called us to be reconciled with those who have injured us and to pray for forgiveness for our sins “as we forgive those who have sinned against us.”

We call on you to contemplate the crucified Christ, who set us the su-preme example of forgiveness and of the triumph of compassionate love. U.S. Bishops, Statement on Capital Punishment, 1980:23.
