• Ex: fridge magnets & bar magnets

Electromagnets

• Magnets that are created when there is electric current flowing in a wire

• Ex: nail, screw, toaster, doorbell

Motors

• Permanent magnets & electromagnets work together to make electric motors & generators

• Works by changing the direction of electric current

Magnetism

• Based on the alignment of particles in a substance

• Atoms have moving electrical charges (electrons)– Moving electrical charges produce a

magnetic field (Faraday Effect)

• Atoms in a substance behave like little magnets– An area where the particles all have

a similar magnetic field is called a Domain

• Normal substances’ particles are not aligned

• Aligning these particles will cause an overall magnetic field
