Comparison of Magnet Materials
Flexible Magnets: very low cost, easy to use, easy to cutwith scissors or paper cutters, can be laminated with anadhesive on one side making it very easy to attach to yourproduct. Normally magnetized with multiple poles on onlyone surface to give higher holding strength. High energyflexible magnets are similar in strength to the Ceramic 1types, but are far easier to machine to specific shapes andsizes.
Ceramic Magnets: low cost, yet relatively high strength, themost widely used magnets today. Ceramic 5 and 8 are significantly stronger than the Ceramic 1 types. A wide variety of standard shapes and sizes are available. Hard tomachine, Ceramic magnets are highly resistant to demagneti-zation.
Alnico Magnets: The most temperature stable magnet material, can be used up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit!Alnico 5 should normally be used in long (in relation to theother dimensions) lengths, to avoid self demagnetization.Alnico 8 can be used short lengths. Very hard to machine,Alnicos are relatively costly materials, containing largeamounts of cobalt. Alnicos require careful handling to avoiddemagnetization.
Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets: The most powerful classof magnet materials available today. A Neodymium magnetthe size of a grape has the same strength as a Ceramic magnet the size of a tennis ball - 9 times it’s volume!Though costly, these magnets can be used very effectively tominiaturize large components. Because of their highstrength, smaller magnets can be used to get the same ener-gy. Extremely resistant to demagnetization, Neodymiummagnets have to be protected against rust - by encapsulating, painting, varnishing, or, plating - and should not be used attemperatures above about 300 degrees Fahrenheit withoutcareful design.
Samarium Cobalt Rare Earth Magnets: The most costlymagnet material, Samarium Cobalts can maintain their highmagnetic properties up to almost 600 degrees Fahrenheit, and do not have any rusting problems. This material isextremely brittle, hard to machine, and should be handledwith care to avoid chipping and cracking.
Dimensions and Tolerances
All dimensions in this catalog are in inches. (To convertfrom inches to millimeters, multiply the inch dimensions by25.4.) The dimensions stated in the catalog are nominaldimensions. Actual dimensions vary a little from the nominal. The band within which the dimensions may varyis the “tolerance band”. In general, you can expect a standard tolerance of + 0.010" on the thickness if machined,or + 0.020" if not machined. (The tolerance on the thickness of Flexible materials is + 0.005".) On otherdimensions, the tolerances are the greater of + 0.020" or + 2% of the dimension.
Please remember, we have a full machine shop and are ableto custom machine any magnet material to virtually anyshape, size, and tolerance.
The “Magnetization Direction”
Except for the low energy Flexibles and the Ceramic 1 types, all magnet materials in this catalog are “oriented”. Thismeans that they can only be magnetized through one specificdirection. The orientation direction is shown by the symbol . The magnetic poles and therefore the strongestsurfaces are on either end of the arrows.
Assembling Your Magnets
Adhesives of various types are recommended to assemblemagnets to your product. All adhesives require that for bestresults the surfaces to be bonded should be clean and dry. Itis best to experiment with adhesives for your product beforedeciding on one.
Safety First
Large Ceramic magnets and all Rare Earth magnets can beextremely powerful, and great care should be taken to avoidinjury to personnel who handle the magnets. All hard magnet materials are brittle, so avoid dropping them orallowing them to snap towards each other. And rememberthat magnetic fields can destroy data on floppy discs andshould be kept away from sensitive electronic equipment.

The Ultimate in Versatility! Low cost EZ-Grip Flexible Magnetic Stripmakes your product instantly magnetic. From the largest inventory ofFlexible Magnets anywhere.
In convenient roll sizes. We supply rolls of about 12” diameter for ease of handling. For material which is 0.060” thick, this is a 100 foot long roll weighingin at about 5 pounds. For 1/8” thick material, 50 foot rolls are supplied. 1/4”thick material is normally supplied in 100 foot rolls, 24” in diameter. Longer rollsizes are available.
With or without pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Rubber based adhesives(Type A) for general purpose indoor applications, and acrylic based adhesives(Type T) for general purpose outdoor applications, are standard. Type T adhesivesperform better with plastics and other “hard to adhere” materials. Other non standard adhesives are available to meet your requirements. We recommend thatadhesives be tested on your product prior to ordering production quantities.
Cut to length. We can cut strip to any specified length. Tolerances on cut dimensions are the greater of + 0.030” or + 2% of the cut length.
Scored to length. Instead of cutting all the way through, material can be scoredto length. This allows greater ease in removing liner paper for adhesive backedstrip, and storage of material in roll form. To break off, simply bend the materialat the score line, and the part easily breaks to size.
Special non standard sizes, and custom extruded shapes. Call our sales teamto discuss special non standard sizes and shapes.
To order strip with adhesive, simply add the letter “A” or “T” to the part number. For
example, 0632A is 0.500” wide x 0.060” thick laminated with Type A general purpose
indoor adhesive.* with pressure sensitive adhesive backing

Care Tips: If applying to a vehicle, both the magnet and vehicle
surfaces should be clean, dry, and waxed prior to applying. Generous
waxing prevents marring of painted surfaces, especially in hot
climates. It is best to remove the magnetic sheet weekly from painted
surfaces for cleaning and to ensure that moisture is not collecting
between the surfaces. (These precautions are not necessary when
using Safemag sheeting.) We do not recommend applying magnetic
sheet to repainted vehicle surfaces.

High Energy Flexible MagnetsEasy to machine and cutWill not shatter or break
As strong as or stronger than hard Ceramic 1 Magnets
Stronger (and more costly) than the regular flexiblemagnet material, this High Energy Flexible material isabout the same strength as the hard Ceramic 1 types(some grades are actually stronger than the Ceramic 1types), but much easier to cut, machine, punch toshapes, and otherwise customize.
Special magnetizing patterns are available to give thebest performance for your application. Please describeyour application to our sales-people so we can helpyou select the best type for the job.
Please note that the thicker the strip, the shorter thelengths that we can supply them in, since the strips getincreasingly difficult to coil as the thickness increases. For example, strips which are 1/4" thick can be supplied in maximum lengths of about 6 feet.
Shown here are a small sampling of the strip sizes anda few of the more popular standard shapes and sizesthat we carry. Please ask if you have other size requirements.

Outstanding features of these magnets are theirlow cost, good holding strength and greatvalue.
Ceramic magnets are a dark, “charcoal grey” color, and do not appear metallic.
Some of these magnets can be magnetized with several poles on one face to give greater holdingstrength on that surface. (This gives a lower holdingforce on the opposite surface.) Please talk to oursalespeople about your application, so that we canhelp select the best magnetizing method for the job.

Large Blocks Give Lots of Strength. Or we can cutthem to your exact specs.
Ceramic 8 Magnets are about the same strength as the Ceramic 5 types under most normal operating conditions.
They perform better under “dynamic load” conditions(for example in motors, or at high temperatures). Usethese large blocks when you need to project magneticfields a long way, or need a lot of total magnetic field. Also, we can use these blocks to cut magnets to whatever size you need for your application.

Remember, we have a huge variety ofAlnico magnets in stock. Only a few ofthe most common sizes are shown here.
Alnico 5 rod magnets should have lengthslong in comparison to their diameters inorder to avoid self demagnetization - aratio of 5 to 1 is best. Any lengths can becut to your requirements. Part numbersbeginning with CG have already beenmachined to tolerances of + .001. Partnumbers beginning with RR are “as cast”and tolerances are wider - the greater of +.015 or 2% of the dimension.
Sintered Alnico 8 is more resistant to demagnetization than Alnico 5 material, and can therefore be used in thethin disc shapes shown here without self demagnetization. Like the Alnico 5material, Alnico 8 has excellent temperaturestability and can be used to 1,000 degreesFahrenheit!

Power Packed Round Magnets. Amazingstrength in a small size.
The first two digits of the part number represent the grade of the material. Thehigher the grade, the stronger the material.
Shown here are some of the sizes that we carry instock. We actually carry a wider variety in stock, many of which are used for more technical appli-cations. These are available up to 4" in diameter.
Unlike most other materials, Neodymiums will rustin humid environments, and if exposed to suchenvironments should be somehow protected. Thiscan be done by painting, oiling the surfaces, orplating. If you foresee any problems, please ask us.We are able to plate these materials and to apply avariety of other corrosion resistant coatings.
Any size can be machined to your exact specifications.

Powerful, temperature stable, and won’t rust.
Extremely powerful, all Rare Earth magnetsshould be handled carefully to avoid injury.Samarium Cobalts are very brittle, and will chipand shatter easily if allowed to drop or snaptogether. Use these magnets when space is alimiting factor, high magnetic strength isrequired, or where temperatures are expectedto exceed about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
The first two digits of the PartNumber represent the “grade” of the material. The higher the grade, the higher the energyavailable from the magnet. We have availableSamarium grades up to 32 in block shapes, though these are used mainly for more techni-cal applications and are therefore not shownhere. Please call us for more information onthese.
Our rectangular Samarium Cobalt Rare EarthMagnets are not shown in this catalog. Manyother standard sizes are available. Please call uswith your requirements!
Please remember, we have a full machineshop and are able to custom machine anymagnet material to virtually any shape, size, and tolerance.

Different Magnetizing Patterns Give Different Results
Except for the regular Flexible and Ceramic 1 materials, all magnet materialsare “pre-oriented” and can only be magnetized in a particular direction.
Standard (or “conventional”) magnetization is straight through the orientation direction, and produces one North pole and one South pole. The Rare Earth magnets are extremelydifficult to magnetize in non-standard ways. However, the Flexible and Ceramic typescan be magnetized in many non-standard ways to give special results.

be changed by creating a “magnetic circuit”which might involve one or more magnetsand some steel components. You can measurethe flux density emanating from a magnetusing a Gaussmeter.
Resistance to demagnetization (symbol H) is measured in Oersteds(symbol Oe).
Maximum energy available from amagnet (symbol BHmax) is measuredin Gauss Oersteds (in practice, millions of Gauss Oersteds, thereforethe symbol MGOe, M for million)
The table summarizes some of thekey characteristics of our magnetmaterials. There are actually manyother important characteristics, butthese are normally important in moretechnical applications. Please consultour engineering department for moreinformation.

Small Round ElectromagnetsWith up to 600 pounds pullPower packed electromagnets operateon 12 Volts DC
Where permanent magnets don’t havethe pull you need, or when a load mustbe picked up and released many times, perhaps automatically, an electro-magnet will do the trick.
For a complete list of our electromagnets, please see our “Magnets for MaterialHandling” catalog.
These electromagnets should only be usedwhere the entire surface is in complete contact with the surface of the load. Loadsurface should be smooth and flat. Holdingvalues have already been de-rated by 50%for safety. For critical applications, you mayneed to apply a further safety factor.
Rectifiers are necessary if used with ACpower sources, or they may be operatedwith 12 Volt batteries - see the wattage ratings for each magnet to determine thesize of the battery required.
The size and location of the mounting holes shown are standard, but they can beprovided with special hole patterns ifrequired. Leads are normally located on thesides of the magnets. Again, these can belocated elsewhere for special applications.
