A brief presentation of SAIH

• Founded in 1961 as a cooperation between students and academics

Education for development SAIH supports local organisations and institutions working with higher education, research and capacity building in southern

Africa and Latin-America. • SAIH’s motto is “Education for Liberation”

• SAIH supports: • projects in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, Bolivia and

Nicaragua • higher education which is sensitive to local languages

and cultures • informal training and capacity building in leadership skills

and on topics such as sexual and reproductive rights and HIV

• institutions of higher education and organisations that are active in debates and processes of change in their societies, and where the target groups actively participate in the development of the projects

During more than 50 years, SAIH has been a largely know and respected organisation in Norway, and widely

recognised for their important work for education. SAIH’s funds are in most part from the Norwegian

government, but about 9millions Norwegian kroner or about 1,2 million Euros.

SAIH is very proud of the money Norwegian students contribute with, twice a year when the pay the semester fee, most students chose to donate between 10 and 40

Norwegian kroners (1,25 euros up to 5 euros)

For more than 50 years SAIH has had campaigns to rase awarness for different struggels all over the

world.

In 1970, SAIH supported Nelson Mandela and ANC in South America, and in 1975 a spy from South Africa infiltrated SAIH! Thats a good example of what an

important job SAIH has done and is doing

Students at Risk

Autumn 2012 SAIH had a campaign to support students fighting for democracy all over the world. The idea was to get the

Norwegian government to give scholarships to students who had been expelled from universities in their home country because

of political engagement.
