Magna Carta 800th Anniversary Events Programme 3

I am delighted to introduce Salisbury Cathedral’s Magna Carta Events Programme for 2015, as together we celebrate the 800th anniversary of the famous charter.

So many of the liberties that we hold dear today – and perhaps sometimes take for granted – can be traced back to Magna Carta. Despite its age the document has clearly gained in relevance for a modern audience, as we have seen in the enthusiastic response to our anniversary events planning and the unification of the four original 1215 copies at the British Library earlier this year.

The first clause of Magna Carta guaranteed the freedom of the church in England. Today the church retains its role as a mediator and a body that can challenge those in power on behalf of those who feel they have none.

I am delighted therefore that Salisbury Cathedral is at the heart of this year’s celebrations both nationally and locally, as we remind ourselves of Magna Carta’s enduring values of fairness, universal rights and justice.

For us 2015 will be about bringing those values to the widest possible audience through a range of events, and we are very grateful to the many partners who have worked with us to help create this programme, especially the Heritage Lottery Fund and Wilsons Solicitors.

I hope you find plenty to excite, engage and challenge you in our events programme, and look forward to welcoming you during the year.

The Very Revd June OsborneDean of Salisbury

Historic Importance

The Salisbury Magna Carta’s strong link to the Cathedral adds a great deal to its significance: it is a thirteenth century document presented in its historic context, with ties to key figures from Salisbury’s history who were present at the momentous agreement of Magna Carta at Runnymede.

In 1215, the Salisbury Magna Carta was probably taken to Old Sarum. It would have been brought to this Cathedral once the building was complete enough to receive the collection of documents and books belonging to the community, probably in the mid-thirteenth century. It must have spent most of the past 800 years in the muniment room above the vestry. The word muniment comes from the Latin word meaning ‘defensive’ and refers to the fact that many of the Cathedral’s documents proved the Cathedral’s rights, for example contracts or deeds to land.

Magna Carta too was a defensive document in its own way. Its first clause guarantees the freedom of the Church, hence its importance to the Cathedral.

The Salisbury Magna Carta’s links to key figures in the Cathedral’s history are remarkable. The overseer of the Cathedral’s construction, Elias de Dereham, was the right-hand man of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and present at Runnymede, negotiating on the side of the barons. Elias was responsible for the distribution of some (if not all) of the Magna Carta documents around England following the agreement between King John and his barons in June 1215. It is likely that it was he that took the Salisbury charter to Old Sarum, where he became a canon.

Another Salisbury figure almost certainly present at Runnymede was William Longespée, Earl of Salisbury and half-brother of King John. Unlike Elias, Longespée was loyal to the king and was among the Cathedral’s benefactors, present at the laying of its foundations – a project led by Elias. It is a strange twist of fate that both these figures ended up linked through Salisbury Cathedral.

Thus, in more ways than one, the Salisbury Magna Carta represents the convergence of people with different viewpoints working to achieve a common goal.

Physical Condition

Salisbury’s Magna Carta has often been described as ‘the best preserved’ or ‘the most beautifully written’ of the surviving four 1215 Magna Carta. It is written on sheepskin parchment using a quill pen (made of a swan or goose feather) and ink made from oak galls and iron salts.

All the 1215 Magna Cartas are visibly very different from each other: different sizes of parchment and in different stages of preservation. There is a particular difference between the script on Salisbury’s and the other three. Salisbury’s is known as ‘Book Hand’ and would have traditionally been used when creating manuscript books: the script of the other three surviving Magna Cartas are in a ‘Chancery Hand’, a style commonly used in the royal chancery for all official documents.

The ink on the Salisbury charter is particularly clear and strong and appears to be the most stable. The recipe used for this batch of ink must have had just the right balance of ingredients to ensure that the colour intensity was strong and that it did not readily bleed when exposed to moisture.

As a result the text is clearly legible even after 800 years. It is also very fortunate that previous restoration treatments have not caused as much potential damage as they might have done, particularly from the overzealous use of water to flatten the parchment.

‘Spirit of Justice, Power of Words’ Chapter House and Cloisters

This new Magna Carta exhibition presents the world’s best preserved original 1215 document in its historic context, telling the story of the struggle between King John and his barons using displays, media, artefacts, interactive stations and film.

Animation and modern replicas of medieval armour are used to captivate the imagination of children and families and tactile elements help to shed light on how medieval documents were made. Some of the Cathedral’s

other rare medieval documents related to its earliest history are also on public display. A selection of objects on loan from Salisbury Museum and other sources tell parts of the story.

The exhibition explores the link between Elias of Dereham, the right hand man of Archbishop Stephen Langton and a key negotiator between the Barons and the King, and Salisbury Cathedral’s Magna Carta. Present at Runnymede, Elias had the responsibility of distributing the charter across England in 1215 and began masterminding the construction of Salisbury Cathedral five years later.

The link between our Magna Carta and its spectacular architectural setting is also highlighted, pointing out the narratives of good and evil, justice and injustice hidden within the 13th century stone carving.

With a focus on Magna Carta’s legacy, objects from some of the most important struggles for justice and freedom will be on rotational display, and the whole experience is brought to life with documentary footage, film and other media.

Voluntary donation for exhibition and Cathedral visit. Timed entry during peak periods - book in advance online.

‘Magna Carta and the Common People’ by Professor Chris Dyer19.30, Friday 24 April, Main Nave

Sellar and Yeatman famously mocked the exclusive privileges granted by Magna Carta by stating that it was ‘a good thing for everyone (except the Common People)’. More serious historians once shared their belief that the aristocracy were the main or even the sole beneficiaries of the charter. Now we can see points of direct contact between the royal government and the peasantry. Peasants looked to the king as their protector. They had sufficient political skill to negotiate with their lords and - like those who demanded the reforms included in Magna Carta - aimed to set limits to the powers of their superiors and to enjoy some security and independence.

Christopher Dyer has been Professor of Social History at the University of Birmingham, and Professor of Regional and Local History at the University of

Leicester. He is the author of books and many articles and essays on the history of English villages and towns and their inhabitants in the middle ages. His most recent book, ‘A Country Merchant’, is about a Cotswold wool dealer who lived between 1470 and 1540.

‘Magna Carta: The Salisbury Connection’ by Professor Nicholas Vincent19.30, Friday 15 May, Main Nave

Salisbury Cathedral has long prided itself on its possession of an original of King John’s charter of 1215. Yet in what circumstances did this charter arrive in Salisbury? What does its preservation here tell us about the bishops who ruled Salisbury in the early thirteenth-century? And what, in general, does the distribution of originals of Magna Carta, not only from the 1215 issue but from half a dozen of the later thirteenth-century reissues, tell us about the meaning of this most iconic document to those of its contemporaries who brought it to birth?

Nicholas Vincent is Professor of Medieval History at the University of East Anglia, having come to Norwich via Oxford, Cambridge and Canterbury, He has published a dozen books and

some hundred articles on various aspects of Anglo-French history. He presently co-ordinates a major Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) research project into the background and reception of Magna Carta. This has brought to light a great deal of new information on the charter, its makers and its making.

‘Magna Carta’s American Adventure’ by Professor A.E. Dick Howard 18.00, Sunday 7 June, Main Nave Part of Magna Carta’s iconic significance lies in its international impact, and nowhere is it more venerated than in the USA, where it was used to justify the Declaration of Independence, and to shape American constitutionalism.

A.E. Dick Howard is an internationally renowned constitutional lawyer and currently the White Burkett Miller Professor of Law and Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. He is the author of a number of publications including the ‘The Road from Runnymede: Magna Carta and Constitutionalism in America’, ‘Democracy’s Dawn’, and ‘Constitution-making in Eastern Europe’.

Fascinating 90 minute walks in the city. Immerse yourself in tales of conquest, conflict and the quest for freedom in Salisbury across the ages.

Here in Salisbury we are particularly proud that our own Magna Carta is considered to be the best of the originals. Salisbury Cathedral also has the tomb of William Longespée, Earl of Salisbury, half brother of King John. Longespée is specifically mentioned in Magna Carta as an advisor to King John. Richard Poore, Bishop of Salisbury is described as a witness in the 1225 re-issue of Magna Carta on display in Washington and Canberra.

In addition, Salisbury has been the scene of many historic visits by the Kings and Queens of England over the last thousand years. This walk will look at the changes to liberty, justice and power, both in Salisbury and throughout the kingdom, over many centuries.

We shall see how the liberty of the people of Salisbury has been influenced by harsh Norman kings, Magna Carta, powerful bishops, cruel civil wars, severe punishments, a Rotten Borough and unjust laws. This walk is a journey from absolute medieval monarchy to the constitutional monarchy of today. From feudal law to parliamentary law. From royal power to people power.
