MAGI-GRAM

Official Newsletter of IBM Ring 50 -- The National Capital Ring -- Volume 72 No. 11 November 2018

President Stan Hillard began

the November meeting with some

comments on the coming events for

Ring 50. December brings the

Annual Children’s Holiday Show.

Then watch the Ring 50 members

perform at the January 2nd

meeting

and February 6th it’s the Alain Nu

lecture. March 6th Carl Andrews

Lecture. April will be Magi-Whirl

2019, see page 2 for Magi-Whirl

information.

Dan Krevere won $35 dollars

in the 50/50 drawing and donated

his winnings back

to Ring 50.

Thanks Dan!! President Hillard introduced

Michael Vincent, a British

magician and student of Darwin

Ortiz, was a special guest for the

evening. Michael won The Magic

Circle's Close-up Magician of the

Year award three times (1983, 1991

and 2003) and was awarded the title

of International Magician of the

Year in 1993. Another guest was

Jason Ladanye who just published

his second book on card magic,

Game Changer

The lecture began at 7:45 PM

before a standing room crowd of 53

after a short Ring 50 business

meeting. In use for the Darwin

Ortiz lecture was the newly

acquired camera and huge TV

screen to allow those in the back

rows to see the close-up table.

Darwin Ortiz is a MASTER of

close-up card magic and gambling

techniques. Known worldwide for

the many books that he has released

on both subjects, Ortiz was a

delight with his charming

presentations and ridiculously

smooth handling of some of the

most intricate of techniques.

Having spent decades deceiving

others with his uncanny skills,

Ortiz shared some of the many

classic effects that he is known for

and some unpublished material.

Darwin Ortiz’s lecture covered

magic philosophy, moving beyond

presentational theory and exploring

the very structure of magic effects.

He took the time while teaching his

routines to give specific examples

of theories and how conflict is the

essence of dramatic story telling.

(continued from page 1)

As a successful professional

magician he has spent over 35 years

creating, designing and refining the

world of card magic and gambling

techniques.

Ortiz has appeared before

thousands of audiences of all kinds.

During that time he has studied

what it takes to really move an

audience.

There are very few performers

around the world whose work with

the memorized deck has changed

the course of magic. But Ortiz has

done it! He shared with us his

thoughts on the memorized deck.

Ortiz was able to correctly identify

cards that a participant cut to, cards

in the middle of a packet. His

detailed handling of the memorized

deck was perfect for a newcomer or

professional. He gave some

important insights into performing

this style of magic.

He had a spectator cut the deck,

remove a card, and place it in his

pocket. Ortiz shuffled the deck and

placed the deck in his pocket. The

spectator removed the card from his

pocket and showed it. Ortiz reached

into his pocket and after a few

shakes removed the matching card

of the spectator.

He followed this with a 3-card

monte routine which the spectator

and audience could not find the odd

card time after time.

Next was a demonstration of

Fast Company. One of the most

convincing versions of Triumph

(some cards face up, some face

down) we have ever seen

performed including a surprising

climax.

After the 20 minute break he

played poker with a spectator. The

spectator cut the deck and removed

a face down card. Ortiz did the

same thing. Then the spectator cut

the deck again and removed a face

down card, so did Ortiz. Next time

after the cut 2 cards were removed.

Finally the deck was cut by the

spectator and the fifth card was

removed. Ortiz did the same. When

the spectator turned over hi cards

he had 2 pair. When Ortiz turned

over his cards he had a royal flush!

I believe this was Jacks or Better -

Ortiz’s latest handling of this

highly commercial gambling

routine from “Darwin Ortiz at the

Card Table”.

Michael Vincent says: “It is no

secret that I am big fan of Darwin

Ortiz’s books and have been long

before I became one of his students.

I make no apology for my

enthusiasm for his latest

contribution to the subject of card

magic. I feel his book Lessons in

Card Mastery is your opportunity

to take your studies to a post

graduate level”.

Ortiz took the time while

teaching his routines to give

specific examples of theories and

he explained many of the effects,

with handling techniques. Several,

of the effects he taught can be

found in his book Lessons in Card

Mastery. This was a great evening

enjoyed by all! (Photos by Mike Wolfson)

Ring 50 has announced that

Magi-Whirl 2019 convention will

be held in a new venue, Schlesinger

Concert Hall and Arts Center, 4915

E. Campus Dr, in Alexandria,

Virginia which has ideal facilities

including a 981-seat theater for the

Gala Show. The line-up of talent so

far, includes: The current president

of I.B.M. Michel Finney, along

with Gustavo Raley, Jessica Jane,

Niels Duinker, Christopher T.

Magician, and Ring 50’s Magician

of the Year - Christophe Jelinski.

A Saturday lecturer features David

Roth, King of Coins.

Negotiations continue for other

topnotch entertainers, lecturers, and

magic vendors for Ring 50’s

premier event of the year. Magi-

Whirl Co-Chairmen Danny Selnick

and Craig Fifer are seeking your

help in contacting and arranging for

dealers to E-Mail them at

[email protected] or

[email protected]. President Stan

Hillard emphasized that we must

make an all-out effort to publicize

Magi-Whirl and for each member

of Ring 50 to sell at least 10 Gala

show tickets to ensure it is a

financial success. After November

30th see www.magi-whirl.org for

Excitement All Around “Life is like riding a bicycle. To

keep your balance, you must keep

moving.” --- Albert Einstein

At this point in my tenure, I hope

that the one thing we can all agree on

is that we, as a Ring, are moving -

and moving forward. No, not in great

dynamic swells that eclipse and wash

away past practices, but rather in

small changes that enhance your

experience as practitioners of the

magical arts and members of Ring

50. The current officers have worked

hard to put together a program that

hopefully promotes your growth as

magicians, entertains you, and

teaches you some things that you

didn’t know when the year started.

And hopefully provides an

environment of brother/sisterhood

that enriches all the magic in our

lives. Keep them wheels a turnin.

I am an excitable person. And

sometimes that excitement goes

beyond any reasonable boundary.

Just ask my wife who endures with a

roll of the eyes and a gentle smile.

But this month the magic gods have

been incredibly generous to Ring 50.

If you haven’t been part of it, shame

on you.

Our monthly meeting welcomed

one of the elite of card magic,

Darwin Ortiz, who demonstrated

some of the magic and moves that

have made him an international

legend. Adding to the excitement of

the night were two guests that have

almost equal stature within the

international magic community,

Michael Vincent from the UK who

most of us have seen on Penn and

Teller’s “Fool Um” television

program and who is a triple winner

of the UK Magic Circle’s Close Up

Magician of the Year, and Jason

Ladanye who just published his

second book on card magic, Game

Changer, to rave reviews.

A few days before our

Wednesday night meeting members

of Ring 50 attended a workshop

conducted by the incredible Dani

DaOrtiz, from Barcelona, Spain

(Marc Carrion’s home town). Marc

worked hard to make this happen and

it was a wonderful experience for all

who attended. Dani is clearly at the

apex of card magic in that part of the

world and is highly regarded

internationally as well.

And this past weekend more than a

dozen Ring 50 members attended the

Joshua Jay production entitled “Six

Impossible Things” in New York

City. It was a wonderful hour and a

half and we all went away with an

overwhelming desire to push our

own magic to a higher level – even

we old guys. For those of us who

stayed a few days in the Big Apple,

well what can you say, New York is

New York.

Providing this type of opportunity

to all our members is a priority for

the Ring 50 Officers and we hope to

provide several more such

opportunities before the current

magical year is exhausted in July

2019.

Much is being done to make next

Spring’s Magi-Whirl 2019 one of the

best ever. A few weeks ago we

signed a contract with the

Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts

Center in Alexandria, Virginia to rent

the entire facility beginning the

evening of April 12 and continuing

through our gala public show on the

evening of April 13. For those of you

who are not familiar with this

facility, it is magnificent with a 981 seat auditorium and abundant space

for all the other activities we desire.

Mr. Michael Finney, who has had

a long and distinguished career as a

comedy magician has agreed to

provide a lecture during the

Convention and serve as the Master

of Ceremonies for the public gala

show. Oh, and did I mention that he

is the current International President

of the IBM, taking over from our

own Bob Patterson this past July?

From Argentina we will have

Gustavo Raley who is an incredible

magical performer - his work with

shadow puppets in a word is

mesmerizing. We will have the

wonderful Jessica Jane Peterson who

appeared recently on Penn and

Teller’s “Fool Um” television show

and was the cover story in Linking

Ring earlier this year. From the

Netherlands we will have Niels

Duinker, holder of 7 Guinness World

records for his juggling. He totally

energizes the audience with his antics

– such as juggling seven things high

in the air while eating an apple. He

does it all at light speed. From Long

Beach, California we will have

children’s magician, Christopher T

Magician, and of course, our own

man of mentalism Christophe

Jelinski. Not to be missed will be the

Saturday lecture by David Roth,

King of Coins! More to come on this

as everything gets put together.

I’m looking forward to seeing

each of you at next month’s Ring 50

Children’s Holiday Magic Show. It’s

a great time to see four of our own-

Nolan Montgomery, Arnie Fuoco,

Drew Owens, and JT the

Unstoppable perform for the kids.

The show MC will be past Ring 50

President Larry Lipman. Bring a

boxed toy or non-perishable food

item to be donated to the local

Alexandria Citadel Salvation Army

and enjoy the fun along with the kids.

Have a magical month. Stan Hillard

Ring 50 Members Visit Magic Castle

In October Marc Carrion &

Jen had a great time at the Magic

Castle. They saw several shows, the

two enjoyed the most were Rich

Cowley in the Library Bar and

Riccardo Berdini, an Italian

magician they caught just before

leaving. They saw card magic, coin

magic, mentalism, and ropes. Marc

says the castle was a real magical

experience, and probably saw less

than 10% of what was going on.

They can't wait to go again.

In early November Dr. Arnie

Levin & Ellen had a lot of fun at

the Magic Castle. Dr. Arnie says:

“However, this was my first time

there and I learned the correct way

to attend. Going to the Castle is like

going to Disneyworld...you must

plan in advance what you want to

see and do. First, remember coming

from East Coast, there is s 3 hour

time change and adjust your

schedule accordingly. We had a

6pm dinner reservation that was

9pm our time. The shows start at

8pm Pacific time which is 11pm

our time. The last show is 12pm

which is 3am our time. We only

lasted for 2 shows.

The theaters are small and the

close-up room holds only 18 people.

The rooms were difficult to find and

there were long waiting lines to stand

in. Plan in advance. Dinner was very

good but expensive. The experience

was worth it and fun.”

They were entertained with Keith

Fields & Lady Sarah, Alexander the

Great, and juggler Mickey O’Connor

in the Palace of Mystery. Also in the

Parlor of Prestidigitation was Hillel

& Leticia with a 20 minute

mentalism act. All had a good

performance.

Dr. Arnie says: “The best part

was staying at the very nice Castle

Hotel with free candy, ice cream, and

sodas. All in all, it was fun, I would

go again, but I would really plan it in

advance.”

November 2018 5

By John S. Roberts

That in July, 1977, Ring 50

hosted the 49th I.B.M. Convention at

the Washington Hilton in D.C.?

The four-day magical conclave

kicked off on Wednesday night, July

6th, with an opening show produced

by Ring 50 with Al Cohen as Master

of Ceremonies. Kohl & Company

was a featured act which they

reprised nearly 50 years later in 2018

at Ring 50’s annual Magi-Whirl.

Howard Bamman wrote in the

Linking Ring:* “Washington Capital

Ring 50 members went all out to

provide an evening of entertainment,

fun and fellowship that proved to be

an auspicious beginning for the rest

of the convention. It was a showcase

that set the stage for shows to come.

Producers Larry West and Art

Emerson, together with Ring 50

members, did an outstanding job of

keeping the (magic community)

happy.”

Ring 50 Past President (1974-5)

Bill Wells was the liaison between

the convention organizers and Ring

50. He says “The local Ring played a

bigger role at that time than they do

today. We were responsible for the

first night show, the convention

program, and many other details.”

The President of Ring 50 that

convention year was Doc Dougherty.

Throughout the four days, Ring

50 members played various support

functions to keep the convention

running smoothly. Prominent

magicians who took part in the

festivities included Paul Gertner,

Trevor Lewis, The Gustafsons, Harry

Riser, Tony Griffith, Mike Caveney,

Denny and Lee and Rick Johansson.

Bill Wells: “Jimmy Carter was

President at that time and we invited

Amy Carter to attend one of the

evening shows and to our delight, the

White House accepted. We moved

IBM VIPs off the front row to make

room for Amy and her entourage.

After the show, Amy came back

stage to meet and thank all the acts.

One of the acts was Christian from

East Germany (not Magic Christian

from Vienna). We later learned that

he was actually a Russian spy using

magic as a cover. I guess the secret

service didn’t do a great job of

vetting in those days.

Howard Bamman wrote in the

Linking Ring: “Trying to review a set

of magic shows of the caliber

presented at the Washington

Convention (July 6-9) is something

like describing the thrill of seeing a

glorious sunrise. Words are somehow

inadequate. From the opening night

fun and frolic to the closing showing

show convention registrants were

treated to magic, Magic, MAGIC!

Bill Wells recalls: “Working on

the convention was a great thing for

Ring 50 – most everyone pitched in

and worked on the convention. It

really strengthened the Ring. Those

years and the next few years were

high points for the Ring and the

membership. Because of hotel rates

and theatre unions it is unlikely there

will be another IBM convention in

D.C. in the foreseeable future

particularly with the declining

convention attendances.”

Ring 50 Goes to the

Big Apple & Sees

“Six Impossible Things”

The “Ring 50 Special” New

York trip to see Joshua Jay’s

interactive magic experience “Six

Impossible Things” on 10

November was enjoyed by Ring 50

members and their invited guests.

The Ring 50 members

journeyed down a narrow flight of

stairs at the tip of Canal Street and

assembled in a red-lit room that

looked like the foyer of a hipster

bordello. The mood was tremulous,

the air scented with cinnamon and

enigma. At show time, bedsheets

the gray were distributed and more

or less willingly slipped on, ghost-

style. After only a little more

inanity, Joshua himself sporting a

Henley shirt appeared with a

slightly goofy grin, looking like a

fraternity pledge. Following a

wicked trust-building exercise, he

sent the audience merrily marching

through a series

of small rooms,

counting off

the illusions, a

few of them

loosely inspired

by “Alice in

Wonderland.”

In each room, a new mystery

unfolded to reveal another

"impossible thing."

His sleights were accomplished

casually and expertly and with such

cheerful misdirection that the hands

themselves never caught the eye.

Most of the tricks were slights

though clever variations on the

usual card, coin, and rope routines

to an exercise in bending utensils,

that were performed in different

settings in which the audience sat

just a few feet and sometimes

inches away from Joshua.

The show was an intimate affair

staged for an audience of 20. It

was a great chance to meet and chat

with Joshua and see a show that has

been touted as something uniquely

wonderful.

Dani DaOrtiz Presents

Masterclass for Ring 50

A Masterclass with Dani

DaOrtiz was held on 4 November

at the Knights of Columbus Hall

(behind St. Leo Church) on Old

Lee Highway in Fairfax VA for

Ring 50 members. The 6-hour

masterclass was an extraordinary

opportunity to learn from one of the

top magicians in the world, and

have a lot of fun doing so. Dani

combined superb technique with

crazy humor. A student of Juan

Tamariz, his magic was sometimes

characterized as being

unconventional and making much

use of improvisation. It allowed

him to create incredibly dynamic

routines that cater to those

particular audiences in the

specific environment in which

he is working. Dani is also a

prolific editor and author of

magic magazines, books, and

DVDs.

Challenge Reveal

Arnie Levin submitted this

very nice “Find the Selection”

trick. The challenge is to come

up with your own, alternative

way of revealing the chosen

card. First, the set up:

Have the spectator shuffle

the deck of cards and then deal,

left to right and face down, three

rows of five cards each. Have

him pick a pile, cut off a few

cards and note the one on the

bottom. He replaces the cards

on any other pile – not the one it

came from. Put any pile on top

and the final pile on top of that.

Now the spectator deals out

two piles, starting with one on

the left and alternating the

cards. Give the spectator a

Magician’s Choice so that he

ends up with the right-hand

packet. The spectator’s card will

be the third one from the top:

Using his super-sensitive

surgeon’s hands Dr. Levin

spreads and “senses” the cards,

rejecting some and setting

others aside as “possibilities”

until he reaches and reveals the

chosen card - Applause cue.

Since not all of us are gifted

with hand like Arnie’s, you are

invited to create your own

reveal; A humorous, over the

top, outside the box, off the

wall, original ending. Send it to

me and I will put it in the next

“quickie” column. Or just use

Arnie’s version – it’s a fine trick

just as it is.
