2 JAXFAX SUPPLEMENT JULY 2010 • GUIDE TO HOST AGENCIES, CO-OPS & CONSORTIA

Selecting a host agency or one of the otherbusiness models that you will find in thiscarefully selected guide can be a huge steptoward the growth of your business. It canalso be a big commitment, a business mar-riage of sorts, and as such it is paramountto inform yourself and carefully weigh thepossibilities before making a decision. For this reason, we have compiled the bestinformation from some of the best suppli-ers in one place, which we hope will provideyou with specific answers to the followingquestions:

• What is a host agency, franchise, co-op orconsortia?

• What is unique about each of thesemodels and how can I select the one bestsuited to my needs?

• What are the immediate and long-termbenefits to my business and me?

• What questions do I need to ask and whatdo I need to look out for?

Business Models 101A host agency provides independent travelagents the ability to book travel for theirclients with the industry control numbersand systems belonging to that agency. It mayalso offer training opportunities, back officesupport, marketing technology, easy book-ing systems and protection. Some host agen-cies treat agents as employees, while otherstreat them as independent contractors, al-lowing them to retain their own businessname and still take advantage of the host’spreferred supplier relationships and highercommissions. Financial arrangements, start-up fees, service and transaction fees andcommission structures vary.

A franchise offers a different kind of oppor-tunity from a host agency, chiefly the oppor-tunity to be the proprietor of a franchisebusiness.A franchise is regulated by the Fed-eral Trade Commission (FTC), meaning thefranchise must provide prospective owners

full disclosure about the business, its ownerand its finances.A franchisee is contractuallybound to sell goods and services with, and ex-pected from, the brand. The brand name is theessence of the business and the root of itspower, both with consumers and suppliers.

A consortium is a marketing group com-prised of dues paying members whose com-bined sales volumes can be leveraged forcommission concessions from preferredsuppliers. These preferred supplier relation-ships and the membership dues they collectare how consortia generate income.

A cooperative is very similar to a consor-tium though they are far less common, thedifference being that a cooperative is com-prised of members who each own a per-centage and therefore have a stake and a sayin the organization.

BeforeYouTakeThe PlungeIf you have not done so already, aligningyourself with one of the suppliers you willfind in this guide may very well prove to bethe best decision you make for your busi-ness. How do you know if this advice appliesto you? Well, if you currently work closelywith just a handful of suppliers and are ex-periencing more sales volume than youknow what to do with, we applaud you. Setthis down right now and go back to what

you were doing. If not, read on.Whether you have been are new to thebusiness or have been a travel professionalfor decades, whether you are independent, home based or shopping around for a bet-ter fit, there is information here that appliesto you. If you’re looking for training, supplierrelationships, higher commissions, brandpower, lead generation, back office support, marketing technology, protection for yourbusiness or all of the above, we are confi-dent that one of these suppliers have gotyou covered.

One final piece of advice: while we havedone our best to gather enough informationto help you make an informed decision, yourresearch should not end here.We encour-age you to talk to other travel agents andhost representatives to fill in the blanks.Askthem questions. How will you support mybusiness? How long have you been hostingagents? Will I be able to do business fromanywhere? What will happen to my client listif we part ways? What is your payment/feestructure? Ask yourself questions. What aremy needs? What level of training or supportam I really looking for?Are their suppliers agood fit for what I want to sell?

Good luck, may you find new ways to makeyour business prosper.

JULY 2010 • GUIDE TO HOST AGENCIES, CO-OPS & CONSORTIA JAXFAX SUPPLEMENT 3

Expedia CruiseShipCenters CEO andFounder, Michael Drever, first joined thecruise business in 1988 because all the re-search pointed to it being a long-termgrowth industry; a specialty product cateringto the baby boomer market. Since then, thecruise industry has confirmed his specula-tions with continuous innovation andphenomenal growth. And Expedia Cruise-ShipCenters has grown with it, averaging30% sales growth each year for over twodecades. Drever sees the next 20 yearsbeing just as steady saying, “Our companyhas now hit the sweet spot in the marketwith the majority of baby boomers now be-coming prime candidates for cruising.”

Strategic PartnershipsEarning the reputation as industry leaders,CruiseShipCenters® caught the attention ofExpedia® Inc. in 2007 which resulted in along-term partnership and a re-brand of thecompany to Expedia CruiseShipCenters. Now, the company’s agents are able to har-ness the power of the most recognizablebrand in travel on their website, their busi-ness cards and during every interaction theyhave with a customer.Plus, in addition to thecompany’s preferred relationships with 21partner cruise lines, Expedia's $20 Billion inpurchasing power for non-cruise productputs their agents in a great position to offerclients a full range of travel products at in-credible value.

Bricks and Clicks StrategyWith 127 storefront locations and morethan 3,000 independent agents, ExpediaCruiseShipCenters’ systems offer efficiencyand flexibility for both retail-based agentsand those working outside the office.Therecently launched Expedia® CruiseShipCen-ters Mobile AgentTM program is specificallydesigned for today’s agent on the goand provides powerful technology(CruiseDesk®) that allows them to run theirtravel business from anywhere in the world.CruiseShipCenters MobileAgents also havethe option to be hosted locally, which meansthey’ll enjoy the support of a local FranchisePartner and an additional marketing strat-egy – a 20-foot sign featuring the ExpediaCruiseShipCenters brand.

Expedia CruiseShipCenters stores continueto pop up across North America as theirnetwork of retail locations enjoys substan-tial growth with 13 new brick and mortarcenters already being added this year, bring-ing the total number of locations to 127.Several existing travel agencies, includingAn-chors Away Cruises and Tours, Cruises In-ternational and Just Cruises and Vacationshave also joined Expedia CruiseShipCentersas part of the company’s Stronger.Together®

program which gives established agenciesaccess to their CruiseDesk technology,mar-keting and host agency model.

Industry-LeadingTechnologyWhen people ask him what’s attracting somany agents to Expedia CruiseShipCenters,Drever tells them that seeing is believing.“We invite people to a short webinar to getan overview of our program and take a tourof CruiseDesk - our enterprise CRM sys-tem,” says Drever. “When agents see ourtools in action, they immediately understandthe power of having everything they need torun their business at their fingertips, fromany computer with an internet connection. We hear wow a lot,” he added. When Drever first started out selling travelhimself, he found that his biggest problemwas that he was spending too much time ondata entry and not enough time building re-lationships with his customers. CruiseDeskwas his solution. “Now, our agents get thebooking functions of the most powerfulGDS, fully integrated with the back-office,marketing and customer relationship man-agement system,” says Drever. “It’s easy touse and you’ll never have to enter informa-tion twice! You can book a stateroom andcreate a client invoice with just one click.Plus, CruiseDesk is linked to your websiteso you’ll earn full commission even whenclients book their cruise on your personalwebsite.”

AgentTraining & DevelopmentExpedia CruiseShipCenters is proud to callitself a learning organization.Their initial andongoing training develops accredited ex-perts through the International CruiseAcademy® which provides printed manuals, weekly webinars, online learning modules

and a video library.Agents have access to awealth of training resources 24/7 so theycan choose to learn as slowly or quickly astheir schedule allows. Plenty of in-persontraining events are also held throughout theyear, like the annual Cruise to Success®

World Explorer rally which was attended bymore than 800 Expedia CruiseShipCentersagents last year.

Award-Winning MarketingExpedia CruiseShipCenters’ marketing notonly attracts new clients, it creates Cus-tomers for Life.Through permission-basedemail newsletters, exclusive promotions, printed flyers and a glossy magazine for pastclients, agents build trust and loyalty withevery customer interaction, whether it’s in-person, over the phone or via email. JULY 2009 • GUIDE TO HOST AGENCIES, CO-OPS & CONSORTIA JAXFAX SUPPLEMENT 9

In every contest someone walks awaywith the prize, whether it is a goldmedal, a trophy, or a committed client. When talent is comparable, coaches andanalysts alike will attribute the winner’sedge to one ingredient:Training.

This is why athletes like Kobe Bryant, arguably the best basketball player in theworld, continually seek education evenafter reaching elite status in their game. Not resting on his laurels, Bryant con-tinues to work out 6 hours a day, 6 daysper week and hires top-notch trainersand former players to train him.

So what about you? Are you able tocoast now that you’ve been in the travelbusiness for 30 years? Hopefully, youranswer is a resounding “No!”With the

industry changes we’ve witnessed overjust the last 5-10 years one would bewoefully ignorant to try to do businesswithout continuing education.

So where does a travel agent goto keep abreast of the industryand stay ahead on the informationsuperhighway? This is where a good host agency orconsortium and their partner supplierscan help.Working with the umbrella or-ganization, suppliers are more thanhappy to educate travel agents abouttheir products or their niche of the in-dustry. Training is more accessible thanever these days.Using webinar technol-ogy, you can participate in a qualitytraining session with live Q&A right atyour own computer desktop.

Sometimes it is difficult to get free for alive training session because a clientwalks in or a phone call interrupts you.“That’s why we offer recorded tutorialsat Centrav.com,” says Linda Furry ofCentrav, an international airline consol-idator. “Agents who can’t fit a live sem-inar into their schedule can simply go toourTutorials and view aYoutube demo.”

Make training a priority and stay at thetop of your game!

Training is offered via onlineTutorials onthe home page or via live training webi-nars.

10 JAXFAX SUPPLEMENT JULY 2010 • GUIDE TO HOST AGENCIES, CO-OPS & CONSORTIA

Coral Sands TravelCoral SandsTravel is one on America’s most re-spected HostAgencies. It is owned by Peter and Bil-lie Stilphen.Coral SandsTravel also has a sister HostAgency known asWorld Cruising Society, for cruiseagents only. It has no start-up or monthly fees. Pleasefeel free to visit our websites that are packed withuseful information. We have given up the rest of ouradvertising space to provide useful information whenseeking a Host Agency.

ChoosingToday’s HostAgency ModelsThere is probably a different HostAgency model forevery HostAgency. However, there are certain basiccharacteristics that you can rely on that exist with allHost Agencies. Here are a few of the most obvious.

IATA/ARC/TSIAppointed HostAgenciesJust about all HostAgencies, particularly the NationalHost Agencies are IATA accredited. There are twotypes of accreditation,ARC andTSI.ARC, the oldest, which stands forAirlines Reporting Corporation, al-lows the agency to use one or more of the GDSs(Global Distribution System). The more popular areSabre,Amadeus,Apollo andWorldSpan.ARC agen-cies may have contracts with one or more of thesesuppliers. The ARC accredited agencies were once

the standard for all store front operations. About30% of all Host Agencies use GDS while others areusing web based booking engines. The GDS is an im-portant booking tool for corporate agents and agen-cies because of its flexibility to book air. Many of theolder travel agents still prefer the use of a GDS.Many Host Agencies preferred to eliminate theirARC appointment or just elected, if a new agency,to eliminate theARC and the GDS.Reasons includethe cost of these programs, the chaotic style of theGDS, little or no commissions, the constant threat ofairline debit memos and the increased activity ofcredit card fraud. If air is an important factor formaking a choice betweenARC andTSI, then it’sARCfor you.Of course you can still book air through 3rdparty suppliers and air consolidators. There is no dif-ference between the two IATA accreditations as tobenefits and the IATAN photo ID card.

CLIAAccredited HostAgenciesCLIA,which stands for Cruise Line InternationalAs-sociation, is the marketing arm of its major cruiseline members.Their accreditation is used by manyHost Agencies who specialize in selling cruises.TheCLIA Host Agency is also able to book other travel. However, it is not as widely accepted as IATA with

suppliers. All of the National Host Agencies belongto both IATA and CLIA.

Travel FranchisesMost travel franchises are cruise-oriented franchisesbut also provide other forms of travel. There are usu-ally royalty fees involved but tend to be very struc-tured in their technology, which could be anadvantage to you. Franchises are really another HostAgency model and should also be considered whenselecting your Host Agency.

Non-Traditional HostAgenciesIn order to complete the more popular businessmodels of HostAgencies, it would be prudent to saya few words about these non-traditional or morepopularly known as MLMs (Multi-level-marketing) orcard mills. These agencies are primarily focused onselling the business opportunity such as recruitingagents, selling websites and other non-travel prod-ucts as opposed to selling pure travel.A small per-centage of their gross revenue is attributed to travelcommissions. Agents seeking to sell travel shouldavoid these Host Agency models unless they alsoenjoy being a network marketer.
