City of dazzling numbers

In just over a century, Delhi has seen its population explode from 400,000 to nearly 18 million inhabitants. And as the city’s appeal remains strong, this number is expected to rise another 40% in the next ten years. With these spectacular figures, Delhi ranks not only as the second largest metropolitan area in India (after Mumbai), but also as one of the fastest growing conurbations in the world.

A crossroads of people and cultures for many centuries, Delhi exudes

the air of a multicultural, cosmopolitan metropolis with a colorful and

diverse population. The city attracts people from all corners of India,

making it one of the largest urban areas in Southern Asia.

Overwhelming cultural heritage

Delhi’s rich cultural aura springs from its lengthy history as the capital of India. This is still evidenced today by the many ancient monuments, archaeological sites and ruins that are sprinkled over the metropolitan area. Delhi is home to no less than three world heritage sites: the Red Fort, Qutab Minar (the world’s tall-est brick minaret) and Humayun’s Tomb (named after the 16th century emperor).

Uniform colors

To keep the brightness uniform and consistent, Barco’s LED video walls are also equipped with Sense6

- an automated calibration technology. An integrated spectrum spectrometer continually measures the output of the display cubes instead of a specific optical component of the projector system. This helps ensure exceptionally high brightness and color uniformity over time and across the entire video wall, from center to edge, as well as in the corners within a single cube. It means that no manual adjustments, maintenance or calibration interventions are required, providing 100% availability of video wall content.

Smart power management

The way Barco deals with color shifts and brightness changes of the LEDs is based on smart power management. While competitive systems use theoptical dimmer or the system’s DLP chip to correct non-uniformities, Barco achieves color and brightness corrections by simply reducing the power of the LED drivers. This is a proven technique that has shown good results in terms of contrast preservation and color matching.

A green side effect

GREEN

Smart power management – i.e. using the power of the LED drivers to make colors uniform – has a

favorable effect on power consumption and adds to the eco-efficiency of the video walls. Thanks to this smart power management, a color adjusted video wall can save up to 30% power, compared to an unadjusted one, without sacrifice on contrast ratio. The green ‘side effect’ of this technology only becomes proportionally bigger with the increase of the wall size.

The best of the future

As LED is becoming the future of control room visualization, Barco’s new LED video walls offer a valid alternative for new installations or upgrades of lamp-based systems. The new LED-lit video walls are available in both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, with screen sizes up to 80 inch and resolutions ranging from XGA to full HD. The display cubes can be stacked to create a video wall of any size, without hindering borders or bezels.

Barco upgrade kit

Barco will provide simple upgrade kits, allowing customers to upgrade from a traditional lamp-based video wall to a LED-lit rear-projection video wall. Offering more than five years of intervention-free operations, Barco’s new video walls will provide continuous usability in 24/7 applications.

With an upgrade kit, you can easily and effi ciently upgrade from a traditional lamp-based to an LED-

based system, ensuring a minimal downtime of your video wall.

Imaging Research Center

Center of learning

Renowned for its high standard of education, the Delhi area attracts scholars and students from all corners of the nation. No wonder, when you know that Delhi boasts 165 colleges, 8 engineering colleges, 5 medical colleges and 6 universities. Delhi arguably possesses the country’s best medical infrastructure, ranging from specialized state-of-the-art medical facilities to traditional healing hospitals. In many of these, Barco’s medical displays have become a common sight.

Shopping paradise

But the city is much more than just a treasure-trove of history, culture and science. Delhi is the site of the largest commercial hub in northern India, home to a flourishing retail industry. Shopaholics will find everything they could possibly wish for in one of the many shopping malls mushrooming across the city. Two of the newest malls in town are the five-star DLF Emporio and DLF Promenade in South New Delhi. To catch the eye of passers-by, the malls have put up a giant Barco LED billboard as a projection screen for advertisements, fashion shows, sports events, etc.

One way or another, today’s companies use the IP network as a primary

enabler to more effectively manage technology fleets and to exchange

data within the company as well as with customers. The explosion of

network capabilities has changed work paradigms all over the world -

and visualization is certainly not an exception.

On the one hand, the network has allowed visualization to function as the centerpiece of better collaboration, and on the other hand, it has changed the way facility managers interact with this hardware. Yet the integration of AV and IT has not happened overnight, because experts in the one field are usually not experts in the other. It’s still an ongoing process, but an inevitable one.

3010 golden rules

Not all medical grade displays are created equal, so it pays to comparison shop to ensure you’re getting the best.

redefine | Technology30

QA=Quality

The benefits of centralized Quality Assurance (QA) cannot

be overstated, especially in today’s resource-constrained healthcare system environments. An all-inclusive online, remote service for calibration and QA on medical display systems is the best choice. Barco’s MediCal QAWeb features automated DICOM calibration, QA, display asset management, problem solving and comprehensive reporting.

Get characterized

Some medical display systems ‘characterize’ a dynamic Look

Up Table (LUT), modifying it each time the display is recalibrated by a photometer. This method is preferred, because it accounts for the natural degradation of display components. The result: more accurate information and guaranteed DICOM compliance, compared to systems equipped with factory default LUTs.

things you need to know about In visualization-driven industries, image quality is king – especially in

the medical field, where accurate, precise representation of images can

mean the difference between life and death. However, not all medical

grade displays are created equal. Accuracy, efficiency, and compliance

can vary widely among makes and models, so it pays to comparison

shop to be sure you’re getting the best.

Finer sensor-bilities

Over the years, display manufacturers have developed

a wide array of technologies to stabilize the luminance of their medical monitors. Backlight sensor technology is the most common, producing stable backlight luminance over time. However, this technology doesn’t perform intervention-free calibration or quantitative Quality Assurance (QA) checks, nor does it maintain a complete record of the display’s compliance. Front-of-screen sensors like Barco’s “I-Guard,” are the most accurate: using an 18-bit precision luminance photometer, they provide traceable measurements of the complete DICOM curve 2x/second over the full lifetime of the display.

DICOM meets I-Guard

Unlike backlight sensors, Barco’s I-Guard sensor – when

used in combination with MediCal QAWeb software – fully complies with DICOM Part 14.* This dual solution also provides a complete front-of-screen QA database without any human interven-tion.

Stop the noise!

Barco’s Uniform Luminance Technology (ULT) removes the

distracting ‘noise’ inherent in LCD moni-tors which can result in false-negative or -positive diagnostic results. ULT does not alter the content of the medical image, but rather displays a clearer image by eliminating non-uniformities for a more accurate reading.

Cover up

LCD screens are highly vulnerable to inadvertent

damage from extensive use and environmental factors. Barco supplies all Nio and Coronis display systems with high-quality protective covers, offering improved durability, easy cleaning, and decreased eye fatigue since our proprietary coating reduces reflection to <0.5%.

The green machine

Green technology and ultimate diagnostic performance can go hand-in-hand. The Coronis Fusion 6MP DL offers supreme diagnostic precision, even though it consumes 27% less power than the average dual-head 3MP color display system. It also complies

with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations.

A perfect match

It’s important to choose a display that suits your specific

applications and reading environment, while taking future trends into account. Barco provides a ‘fit-for-purpose’ solution for every need: traditional dual-head monitor systems, the latest ‘Fusion’ display systems (a 30” screen for use as two seamless dual heads or one large single-head display), and multi-modality displays that permit simultaneous reading of color, grayscale and fused modalities on a single monitor.

Buyer beware

A smart display investment includes a comprehensive

warranty for your new equipment. Thoroughly review the factory warranty, and request documentation of warranty claims. Barco provides a 5-year warranty covering both the display systems and the graphics controller.

Dark winter nights are the ideal

setting for dazzling light art

installations. All over the globe,

cities are investing to light up

Candles and lanterns

Light festivals have existed for centuries and are often linked to religious events. The French Festival of Lights in Lyon, for example, dates back to 1852, when locals lit their windows with thousands of candles and took to the streets holding lanterns in honor of the Virgin Mary. Light festivals are also often held around the winter solstice to welcome the return of daylight to a world that has been enveloped by darkness.

Other festivals have more recent origins and offer municipalities a chance to present their cities in a whole new light. During the darkest days of the year these installations attract new visitors and present to their audiences a side of city life they haven’t seen before. But no matter what the roots of a light festival are, the fact remains that the dark urban environment is a perfect backdrop for creative and exploratory light art projects.

City of shimmering lights

This year marked the very first Light Festival in Ghent, Belgium. In recent years, the city has invested heavily in scenic lighting for the entire city centre. Ghent’s lighting plan has won many international awards and, via the new Light Festival, the city’s officials wanted to highlight this plan and give visitors the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Ghent’s unique hidden charm.

From 27 - 29 January, twenty international- ly renowned artists and light designers took visitors on a tour of the historic city centre. The program described the installations as a subtle play of light, reflected off the water’s surface, unexpected projections on buildings and poetic shadows playing in the twilight.

One of the installations at Ghent’s Light Festival was a breathtaking light projection by Spanish architect and artist Pablo Valbuena. The project, titled

Last November, Ralph Lauren staged two 4D large scale building projections at its flagship stores in New York and London. The impressive show delighted the 2,500 special guests attending. It turned out to be an awesome visual display of the Ralph Lauren range, featuring 3D replicas of some of the brand’s most iconic images and accessories from the current collection.

Opening Ceremony

Unforgettable experience

Sports fanatics aren’t left out in the cold either. For the first time last year, Delhi was given the honor of hosting the Commonwealth Games, a four-yearly multi-sports event featuring athletes from 54 members of the Commonwealth of Nations. The opening ceremony, traditionally a visually impressive spectacle, relied heavily on Barco technology. No less than 32 ultra-bright Barco FLM R22+ projectors lit up the event, making it an unforgettable experience.

Safety first Needless to say, organizing a world-scale event like the Commonwealth Games in one of the most crowded metropolitan areas on the planet creates a huge challenge for the local security forces. That’s why Delhi recently set up a brand-new C4i center, equipped with Barco LED-based technology. Nearly 1000 police control room vans, 12 police video monitoring vehicles, and 700 other monitoring vehicles are linked to the system.

Another daunting task in a city like Delhi is to keep up with the ever-increasing energy needs of the exploding population. One of the companies charged with this job is North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL). At home in NoidaSome 20 kilometers (12 miles)

southeast of New Delhi lies

Noida. Thanks to its suburban

atmosphere and special eco-

nomic zone, Noida has become

the Indian home base of many

multinational companies, inclu-

ding Barco.

The early days

Barco’s first steps in India date back to 1996. Today, Barco employs more than 400 people in R&D, production, sales and operations, spread over offices in Mumbai and Bangalore, and customer support centers in Kolkata and Ahmadabad. The nerve center of its activities, however, is located in Noida.

In-house testing

The Noida facility covers some 10,000 square meters, fully outfitted for research and development, manufacturing, sales and operations. The production facility is equipped for in-house testing

and manufacturing, and includes a clean room and automated burn-in chamber. The plant is also ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 certified, underscoring the fact that Barco has implemented advanced quality and envi-ronmental management systems on-site.

Fast growth

Local manufacturing started in 1997 with the production of CRT-based projectors, and these evolved to DLP-based projectors in 1999. Over the years, production capacity has grown significantly; today, the plant builds about 6000 projectors a year, along with purpose-built consoles and workstations for defense applications.

Ever savored ‘Opera at the

Cinema’, shouted along with

Iron Maiden, or cheered on your

favorite soccer team - all from a

cinema chair? Over the past few

years, the Kinepolis Group has

pulled out all the stops to create

an exciting new world of cinema

and entertainment.

Kinepolis has become a worldwide pioneer in going digital, introducing 3D movies and offering original, alternative content. Ever since its first digital steps, the group has partnered with Barco. “The requirements for a cinema projector differ from those for an event venue, stereoscopic or any other projector,” explains Nicolas Hamon, Kinepolis projection and sound manager. “During the design of its initial DP projector series, Barco set up meetings with Kinepolis in which we discussed specifications and evaluated proposals.” Since then, the number of Barco digital cinema projectors has grown steadily at Kinepolis.

Pulling out the stops

While good films remain key, our alternative offering attracts new audiences. Barco greatly helped us move into this exciting digital age.

Full-blown entertainment

Besides the image brightness, vibrant colors and contrast levels, the Kinepolis Group praises the reliability, ease-of-use and serviceability of Barco’s digital cinema projectors. The projectors - and especially the ACS-2048 alternative content switcher - are helping Kinepolis expand its role from cinema alone to full-blown entertainment theater. The number of live satellite events (including concerts, sports, B2B events, and more) increases every year. “The possibilities are legion,” says Hamon. “We’ve had expert surgeons watching a live eye operation in an auditorium, mega-gaming events, concerts of the likes of Iron Maiden and Robbie Williams, to name just a few. A very successful initiative is ‘Opera at the Cinema’, which attracted over 70,000 opera lovers to Kinepolis theaters in 2009-2010.”

The heat issue

Because LED performance largely depends on the temperature of the operating environment,

an advanced heat management system is required to maintain a long lifetime and to ensure high performance. Traditional systems reduce the temperature of the LEDs by conducting the heat away from the LED via a copper plate connected to heat pipes. In fact, this is a process of air cooling. However, a copper plate does not have sufficient heat absorption capacity to cope efficiently with the very high temperature of LEDs. That’s why Barco looked for other proven technologies to lower the LED temperature.

Air-cooled vs liquid-cooled

COOLED

Several tests at amongst other the Rensselaer Lighting Research Center in New York have shown

that the lifetime of an LED can easily be doubled by lowering the heat on the LED junction by only ten degrees Celsius. Extensive studies dedicated to thermal management and electronics cooling indicated that liquid-based cooling systems proved to be more efficient than air-cooling systems in the case of high-density equipment. With this in mind, Barco designed a heat management system based on liquid cooling - a technology that is also used to remove the waste heat produced by computer components. With this advanced heat management system, the LEDs are cooled directly by a jet stream of coolant, so that the optimal LED temperature can be achieved. That’s how the LEDs in Barco’s new video walls have an enhanced lifetime of 80,000 hours of continuous operation.

The brightest picture

The same liquid cooling technique can also be applied to increase brightness. As higher

brightness leads to higher power consumption and thus to higher temperatures, high-bright LED systems usually have a shorter lifetime. Thanks to the efficient heat management system based on liquid cooling, Barco video walls are 20% brighter than any other video wall on the market, without shortening the system’s lifetime. Conversely, reducing the brightness to a competitive level prolongs the system’s lifetime.

Smart power management (i.e. reducing the power of the LED drivers) results in uniform colors and brightness

While competitive systems use the optical dimmer or the system’s DLP chip to correct non-uniformities, Barco achieves color and brightness corrections by simply reducing the power of the LED drivers.

With an upgrade kit, you can easily and efficiently upgrade from a traditional lamp-based to an LED-

based system, ensuring a minimal downtime of your video wall.

A closer look at IP and AV in the 21st century

AV as part of the family

Some forward-thinking AV pundits even claim that AV is IT. InfoComm estimates that the global AV market is currently worth 65 billion USD. However this pales in comparison to the 130 billion USD made by the world’s top ten IT companies in 2009 alone. Thus, it’s better to say that AV is fast becoming an adopted member of the ever-growing IT family tree, especially with the increasing cross-over in product offering.

The Force is with us

In 2007, InfoComm International reported that over 80% of audiovisual products were networked. While most of these devices used the network only passively, the number of those AV devices that allowed or even promoted a deeper integration within the IP net-work has been rising steadily ever since. In a professional context, it’s hard to find a piece of hi-tech that can’t be net- worked. Like the Force in Star Wars, the IP network ‘surrounds us’ and ‘binds us’.

Different markets, different strokes

While all professional markets can clearly benefit from a deeper integration of visualization and network technology, the degree to which this integration is beneficial differs from market to market. For example, for digital signage, centralized content management and

distribution are a benefit, but there is little use for telepresence. On the other hand, content distribution is a must for interdisciplinary teams in the oil and gas world, and telepresence is a tangible benefit in the globalized market.

Ranging from passive to active, and from local to distributed applications, visualization systems use the network for various purposes, often depending on the market.

Control through IP

While long walks through a facility will always be part of a facility manager’s job description, monitoring and maintaining an AV fleet over the network has cut into at least part of this routine. Administrators can view system runtimes and connection issues remotely and they can also control who is using, or who is allowed to use, which systems. Projectors and displays also alert the administrator in case of trouble or if maintenance is needed.

Visible teamwork

Visualization truly kicks into a higher networking gear when it concerns collaboration – it is even becoming the cornerstone of a modern, professional collaborative experience. A high-level example can be found at the European Space Agency’s concurrent design facility in the Netherlands, where multiple engineers share their findings and collaborate on designs on one big digital canvas.

Passing the torch

But the display doesn’t always have to serve as a central collaboration canvas. It can also act as an information distribution center. In traffic or security management centers, for example, the various camera feeds and pieces of information that compose the overview for control room operators to asses, can also be forwarded to people anywhere in the facility, or even to other companies or governmental agencies.

Finding your way in the network

Today’s software and hardware offering to improve collaboration is almost breathtaking: it encompasses a full range of display hardware, switchers, remote controls, scalers, image processors and software. Barco is present in all of these components. Both our in-depth market knowledge and our cross-team experiences have entitled us to fine-tune networked visualization to the needs of each market.

Top 5 reasons to go for AV-IT integration

1. Lower overall total cost of ownership2. Source material is increasingly networked3. Greater flexibility4. Network services create added value5. Generation shift in workforce

Machines in concert

AV equipment can also take a more proactive role. In a hospital, for example, radiology displays must be calibrated to exactly the same brightness and contrast parameters to minimize misreadings. Advanced medical displays do this automatically. In a more limited sense, the same is true for display systems that use a composite image from several projections or display cubes. In both cases, each unit in the network exchanges information with the other units and adjusts itself to a common spectrum of brightness, contrast and color quality.

Decide now

Similarly, networked meeting rooms can bring together vital pieces of information simultaneously, instead of alternating among sources or cycling through sequential presentations. Whether it’s concurrent design, discussing finance or co-analyzing large sets of visual data, it ultimately boils down to one goal: getting to a decision faster. And this is not just talk: Microsoft and Accenture estimate that industry loses out on about half a billion dollars annually due to shortcomings in collaboration technology alone.

Motor shows can make or break the annual sales of a car manufacturer.

Carmakers, therefore, pull out all the stops to showcase their brand

to best effect at major motor shows like Paris, Frankfurt or Geneva.

At the 2010 Paris Motor Show, Audi, Saab, Skoda, Volkswagen, Ford,

LandRover and Jaguar all relied on Barco technology to stand out from

the competition.

‘The Future, Now’ was the motto of the 2010 Paris Motor show, one of the biggest motor shows worldwide. More than 1.2 million visitors travelled to Paris in October to get a preview of the newest cars on the planet. The show focused on the potential of electric cars, spotlighted 120 years of automotive experience and unveiled the most incredible concept cars imaginable.

To kick off the biannual event, the Volkswagen Group organized a spectacular preview night. One of the men behind this show was German lighting designer Martin Kuhn, who was appointed production manager by Filmtec Media. He selected Barco’s DML-1200 to project light effects and video on a big, white cloth at the start of the show and on the actual cars later on.

Creative Technology Germany used Barco’s indoor LED solutions (NX-4, NX-6, ILite 6BK and OLite) at its customers’ exhibition booths and during press conferences to create eye-catching displays. So, visitors not only got a sneak peek at the new cars, but could also admire the LED and lighting solutions that Barco has in store.

Collaborative Flow Management (CFM) completes Barco’s suite of OSYRIS Queue Management Tools, which also includes Arrival and Departure Manager. The CFM system exchanges data with the air traffic management system to control traffic in the most efficient manner pos-sible. The new solution enables airlines to jointly agree on priority flights and to reschedule their services by matching demand to capacity.

Profitable and green

CFM offers numerous benefits for Air Navigation Service Providers all over the world. It helps save money, reduce CO2 emissions, and lower the impact of delays on customers by way of increased on-time performance. With the implementation of CFM, Airways

New Zealand managed to save 20.5 million kg of fuel, which corresponds to 16 million EUR in fuel costs. In addition, aircraft at Airways New Zealand emitted 61.5 million kg less CO2.

Bob Fletcher, Head of Operations Support for Airways New Zealand, confirms: “CFM is further optimizing the management of aircraft delays, ensuring they are

incurred on the ground and not in the air. To reduce the impact of delays, the system enables us to be proactive in managing our network and assigning our priorities to better meet the needs of our passengers connecting to other flights.”

SimulationBig 3D and simulation installations are impressive. Although few

people give the design process that preceded them a second thought,

having the right design tools for these systems can result in more

predictable performance, higher uptime and quicker installation.

Many installation or visualization companies use design software to

create a mock-up of the system a customer will eventually use. But

there are tools that can do much more.

Reducing risk

“Large 3D or simulation installations aren’t cheap,” explains Kris Wullaert, Technical Program Manager, “so we usually try to decrease a customer’s total cost of ownership as much as we can. This means that we need to reduce risk, and this process starts right at the beginning, from the very first design calculations.”

SimulationCompatible and better

Kris and his team use a software tool developed in-house called SimCAD. He opens the application and guides us through a few of its functionalities. “SimCAD is much more advanced than commercially available system design tools. As you can import and export nearly all common file types, it’s no problem for us to work with our partners’ own files and data.”

Precise to the pixel

Kris opens a rendering of a simulation dome with a curved hemispherical screen and an array of projectors. A few mouse clicks reveal paths of varying colors. “Here you can see that we can calculate all the dimensions of the system. But we can also see what the light path, shadowing and overall system specs will be. We’re talking brightness, resolution, contrast and blend zones between pairs of projectors.”

So predictable

“The point is that we can effectively predict the system’s performance with SimCAD,” Kris continues as he tilts two projectors slightly upward. “You can see here that the top part of the screen will have a 7% increase in resolution as well as an 11% increase in brightness. This is just a very simple example. We can also insert other lenses or screen types.”

Back to virtual reality

Once Kris’s team has found an optimum configuration, they pass it on to engineers in the field. “They use SimCAD data to set up the system and create test patterns or optical blend plates, which is a much more scientific approach than playing it by ear. They report their own findings back to us, so we can improve later designs. Since we’ve been using SimCAD for many years now, we’ve been able to hone this process to near-perfection.”

Fully networked solutions

For many years, LSA solutions used images from analog video cameras, displaying them in a mosaic layout or showing alternating camera views. Today, because of their dedicated image processing capabilities, fully networked

solutions have taken over the world of visualization. By connecting cameras - spread over the armored vehicle - to a secure network, operators are presented with an overall view of the complete situation, while advanced image processing minimizes the possibility

of misinterpreting data and puts an end to problematic event or motion detection.

As a leading provider of high-quality visualization solutions and innovative technologies, Barco offers a previously unattained level of situational awareness based on real-time visibility of video imagery. Today, Barco brings operators the clearest and most accurate image currently achievable, irrespective of the environmental conditions, ensuring a high rate of mission success through profound situational understanding.

The power of

Local Situational Awareness (LSA) is a technology that allows meticulous,

all-around perception and comprehension of the local environment in

life-critical and mission-critical situations. That’s why LSA is probably

the most significant capability required in the complex and dynamic

fields of defense and security. As the primary cause of errors is loss of

situational awareness, the need for agile and reliable LSA solutions is

undeniable.

Page 27: magazine Play of light - Barco/media/Downloads/Company... · The best of the future As LED is becoming the future of control room visualization, Barco’s new LED video walls offer

Feature | redefine 27

The landscape of imagery

IP-based LSA solutions allow information to be gathered from a variety of sources and then routed over a network and presented to the operator. This type of advanced LSA is based on the digitization of all camera sources. Starting from a number of cameras distributed over the vehicle, all video signals are captured and displayed on a display, ensuring 360° coverage of the local environment. Moreover, as the system is not limited to a number of dedicated components, it is also possible to add any source and any display - from CPU’s and cameras to smart displays - to expand the system’s functionality.

Obviously, to guarantee 24/7 continuity, this type of solution requires a stable, reliable and fully redundant network environment. If the network’s perfor-mance fails at a critical moment, lives can be at stake. Johan Devos, Product Manager Defense at Barco, adds: “Barco’s network-based visualization solution, providing best-of-class LSA capabilities for threat detection, deploys standard protocols, algorithms and tools to guarantee the reliability of the video flow, allow rerouting of streaming data in case of failure, and provide collision avoidance and error corrections to keep the network consistent and error-free.

Additionally, to ensure the expandability and flexibility of the system, Barco adheres to open standards, which are now included in the upcoming Video Over Ethernet standard.”

Taking a mental picture

As cameras tend to vibrate when the vehicle is moving, images can become unstable and blurred. Moreover, the use of multiple cameras, displaying multiple views, can further complicate information interpretation and evaluation. Barco’s networked offering provides high-tech image processing capabilities to provide decision-makers with accurate, all-round information, allowing them to anticipate risks and act accordingly.

Barco’s image stabilization functionality counteracts image blurring in a moving vehicle, allowing better assessment in non-stationary conditions. Then, to assess the overall situation when

Local situational awareness helps us create a mental picture of our

environment, anticipate, take accurate action and be in complete control. Visualization is the key to success.

A vehicle with a view

Providing solutions for both rearview and panoramic surveillance, Barco offers a complete gamut of LSA applications and capabilities for armored vehicles. Whereas rearview awareness allows drivers and commanders to have a full view out the rear of the vehicle, panoramic awareness offers a 360° picture for complete surveillance around the vehicle. Optimized with automatic alerts to assess all potential threats around the vehicle, the LSA solution allows commanders, operators and drivers to deal efficiently with information in order to take decisive action.

the vehicle is standing still, motion detection helps to detect threats and prevent hazardous situations. “When movements or objects are perceived, an alert can be sent to the operator, allowing him to take proper action. If necessary, operators can even decrease the system’s sensitivity to avoid false alerts related to noise and small local motions, such as the waving leaves of a tree. In addition, the system can automatically generate image switching or overlay windows to enhance accurate decision-making,” comments Johan Devos.

Additional functionality for high-quality image stitching and blending allows operators to focus on the bigger picture, enabling them to visualize video imagery in a full panoramic view, while at the same time allowing them to zoom in to a specific area of interest. Johan Devos adds: “Images from different cameras can be stitched seamlessly together to provide a smoothly blended view of the environmental situation. With advanced fusion functionality, users can combine images coming from infrared and daylight cameras, merging the best of both worlds into one view, ensuring outstanding image reliability.”

Field-proven results

Barco’s networked visualization offering provides best-of-class LSA capabilities for threat detection, significantly improving the success of mission operations. Johan Devos adds: “This has been acknowledged by a number of customers who are now investing in our technology to maintain their leading position in the defense industry. Since we use open standards, it is

A targeted approach

As each situation requires a different approach, a simple user interface and configuration tool helps users customize perspective layouts in order to make the best decisions and deliver successful operations. “Operators should be able to zoom in and out of particular panorama areas and select the images they want to see,” comments Johan Devos. “Using dedicated display buttons, a touch screen or Barco’s CommonSENSE software, the LSA solution can be configured according to the user’s requirements in a given situation. User-friendly screen layouts combined with technologies like stabilization and sensor fusion allow recognition of information in the blink of an eye.”

possible to interconnect an endless range of IP-based devices, which makes the system extremely flexible and expandable. Our customers can seamlessly build and grow a solution that perfectly fits their needs and requirements. Piccadilly Circus is without

a doubt one of London’s most

iconic and easily recognized

areas. Recently, TDK decided to

upgrade their classic neon sign

to LED technology with Barco, in

collaboration with MT² and Beaver

Solutions. The result is a high-

brightness, energy-efficient black

LED display covering nearly 100 m².

Piccadilly Circus is one of London’s most colorful, bustling intersections connecting numerous famous streets and entertainment areas in London’s West End. Among other things, it is known for its big, spectacular advertising signs on the north-western corner of Regent Street and Shaftesbury Avenue.

So much to look at

Project management company MT² (on behalf of Land Securities, the owners of the complex) and system integrator Beaver Solutions were already familiar with Barco technology, as they had previously worked on another Barco LED sign at Piccadilly Circus in 2007. “It’s quite simple, really,” says Neill Macklin from MT². “When it comes to image quality, Barco is second to none. Brands want to be noticed, especially in an area like Piccadilly Circus, where there is already so much to look at. Having the brightest and most contrast-rich image quality helps a great deal.”

Saving on energy

But there were other considerations as well. “With customers growing increasingly aware of energy con-sumption and with leasing space at Piccadilly Circus being a strong financial consideration, a 24/7 digital LED screen needs to be energy-efficient,” Neil Macklin continues. “We were delighted to find out that Barco’s 16mm TF-16BK LED tiles consume less energy than their competitors, in addition to offering the best visual performance.”

The new LED sign uses a web-based Scala content management system supplied by Beaver to ensure seamless and reliable playback of content. Using this system, a variety of media formats can be played at this location, providing total flexibility for the creative agencies involved.

QA=Quality

Front-of-screen sensors like Barco’s ‘I-Guard’ are the most accurate: using an 18-bit precision luminance photometer, they provide traceable measurements of the complete DICOM curve 2x/second over the full lifetime of the display.

ULT does not alter the content of the medical image, but rather displays a clearer image by eliminating non-uniformities for a more accurate reading.

barrels of oil per day. To monitor,

control and optimize the Reliance

plant processes, Reliance set

up a brand-new control center,

featuring the largest video wall

to date in the industry.

From day one, Reliance teamed up with Barco to conceptualize the new control center. Barco had already established a reputation as a high-quality and reliable solution provider, as it had previously supplied solutions to Reliance’s oil, petroleum and telecom units. As Barco had successfully completed other large-size projects for companies in the same industry, Reliance Petroleum was immediately convinced of Barco’s expertise.

Reliance fact sheet

• Exporting over 1 million barrels of oil per day

• 1.6% of global nominal crude processing capacity

• 8 rear-projection video walls

• 24 display cubes of 67” for each wall

• Over 150 million pixels visualizing all key performance indicators

Clear data, clean graphics

With 8 rear-projection video walls, which can be configured in one large desktop in the main control room, and an additional wall in the crisis room, networked data and video sources are now displayed in high-quality, scalable graphics. Guy Van Wijmeersch adds: “If designed well, graphics turn data into useful information, thereby helping operators maintain excellent situational awareness, and enhancing collaboration in the working environment. Incidents can be detected almost proactively, assessed and responded to quickly and accurately before they escalate.” The video wall offers a total overview of the Reliance plant processes and also displays mission-critical parameters, quality and supervisory information, and event-driven graphics.

Over 150 million pixels of KPIs

The new video wall enables data to be retrieved from a wide range of data acquisition systems, and then analyzed to trigger scenario interaction with Barco’s wall management software. The wall offers over 150 million pixels and visualizes all key performance indicators, facilitating a high level of collaboration between all plants and processes. Exporting over one million barrels of oil per day, operators now have the tools they need to obtain real-time insight into the process. By centralizing all control activities in one control center, Reliance has enhanced control over the refinery complex and optimized safety and plant performance - while at the same time creating a best-of-class control room.

Re-writing the of

Special attention was paid to display content and to how information should be visualized. Guy Van Wijmeersch, Market Director of Barco’s Security & Monitoring Division, explains: “As control rooms become increasingly centralized, they get even more complex. Operators are overwhelmed by data - from all kinds of sources - displayed on the wall and on their desktops. This overload hampers real-time insight and situational awareness, which makes the process slow and error-prone. To overcome these problems, the project team decided to only visualize key information and to ensure it would be easy to understand.”

Diagnosing in perfect confidence

I’m so glad to work with Barco. It really is the most experienced

player in the field of medical display devices worldwide.

BG Bergmannstrost in Halle,

Germany, is one of Europe’s

leading trauma centers. The

hospital recently upgraded

its Coronis portfolio to include

several color displays and the

MediCal QAWeb Quality Assurance

service. Dr. Rainer Braunschweig,

head of the radiology department

and an expert in digital radiology,

explains why.

Since the beginning, the Bergmannstrost radiology team has been a true Barco advocate. They praise the systems’ ultra-high resolution, rich contrast, exceptional luminance and the high number of available shades of gray. “Barco ensures continuous DICOM-compliant imaging, which is a major asset,” Dr. Braunschweig comments. The secret behind the consistent image quality and continuous DICOM accuracy is the front-mounted I-Guard sensor. It continuously monitors and adjusts the luminance output of the actual diagnostic viewing area.

The power of red and blue

In 2009, the Clinic switched from monochrome to color displays for diagnostic imaging. Dr. Braunschweig explains: “95% of the diagnostics are still done in black and white, but we are increasingly using color imaging, which

is very helpful for MRI reconstruction or CT perfusion. In the latter case, you get an overview of the skeletal system in black and white, while the vessels are rendered in red or blue. The combination of the two provides in-depth diagnostic insight.”

A real time-saver

Another distinct asset is MediCal QAWeb, Barco’s online Quality Assurance service. “In the past, Quality Assurance was a complex, time-consuming job,”Dr. Braunschweig continues. “The radiologists lost a lot of time keeping tabs on the strict regulations for calibration and Quality Assurance. MediCal QAWeb has taken over that responsibility, thus helping us save precious time while guaranteeing the diagnostic confidence we need 24/7.”

A full immersion, 360° training environment has long been the elusive Holy Grail of flight simulation due to the limited resolution of projectors. Until now. Barco’s SIM 10 makes the rear-projection dome a reality, providing the imaging heart that enables greater control and uptime for enhanced realism in pilot training. Offering 10 megapixel (4,096 x 2,400) resolution, it’s the only projector of its kind for flight training. In addition to superior color brightness

equalization and geometry correction for curved screens, the SIM 10 features smear reduction for fast-moving images. 10 million to 1 con-trast and increased infrared options also make it the platform of choice for night simulation and NVG training.

The best of both worldsTo meet the growing demands of small- to medium-sized control rooms, Barco has integrated LED backlight technology into its LCD displays. With these new LED backlit LCD monitors, Barco combines the benefits of liquid crystal technology (such as low maintenance costs), with energy-efficient LED backlights, resulting in highly reliable and eco-friendly LCD displays.

Barco’s new NSL-5521, using RGB Dynamic LED Backlighting, produces higher brightness than traditional CCFL displays and provides a much wider

color gamut. Because the RGB LEDs are positioned directly behind the LCD panel, the display has an extremely narrow bezel (5.6 mm), making it the ideal solution for tiled video wall applications as it offers outstanding tiled visual performance. The NSL-5521 features a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, a 55” screen with full HD resolution and a 3000:1 contrast ratio.

As opposed to RGB Dynamic LED Backlighting, the new LDX series uses LEDs that are placed around the outer rim of the screen. The light is reflected

uniformily behind the screen by means of a diffusion panel. Because displays using this Edge LED technology offer an extremely thin, space-saving design, the LDX stand-alone monitors offer a perfect alternative or complementary visualization solution for modern control rooms. Available with screen sizes of 46” and 55” in full HD, the LDX series offers an ergonomic viewing experience and a uniform color display from center to edge.

For many years, Barco’s SLM

R12+ projector was the mainstay

of numerous events and fixed

installations all over the world.

The new HDX line is the successor

to this legacy.

Experience and design-savvy resulted in a projector line that makes use of only five, quickly serviceable and replaceable modular components. The HDX’s lenses are fully interchangeable with SLM and even FLM projector lenses, and its straight-on, compact shape fits into standard flight cases, so it is always ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Control via iPad

Barco’s HDX can be controlled manually through its color LCD interface, which includes a preview mode. The HDX also allows for easy, fast web control from any location. It is possible to control it with an iPad, and with detailed run-time data on the lamps, rental companies can decide on the smartest ways to charge customers.
