Analysis of three magazines. This is an image of a front cover of the KERRANG! Magazine, I scanned it onto the computer. The masthead reading ‘KERRANG!’ Is easily recognised even if the main image is blocking half of the lettering, because it’s a well known music magazine. The font throughout the magazine cover is bold and easily read which would appeal to customers, because the articles could catch the customers’ eye. The masthead also looks as though it’s been smashed, like a piece of glass, which shows a sort of rock & roll, rebellious look. The main image is the topic of the magazine because it’s the biggest thing on the page, and because it’s in front of the masthead, it almost has a 3D effect which would appeal to customers. The small pictures around the main image are advertising posters or articles, which make it, seem interesting and jam-packed of things what the customers would like to read/see. This is an image of the contents page for the KERRANG! Magazine, which I scanned onto the computer. As well as on the front cover, the contents page also uses bold, bright font which is easily read and eye catching. The picture in the contents page is of people who attended the Reading and Leeds festival 2010, and I think it links well with the magazine as Reading and Leeds were both music festivals, and KERRANG! is a music magazine. I think the way that the small photo’s dotted around the contents page would attract attention because it gives the customer a preview of some of the things they could find inside. I also think it works well that the contents page and the front cover kept the same sort of colours over the two beginning pages, so it doesn’t become too in your face.

The picture in the contents page is of people who attended the Reading and Leeds festival 2010, and I think it links well with the magazine as Reading and Leeds were both music festivals, and KERRANG! is a music magazine.I think the way that the small photo’s dotted around the contents page would attract attention because it gives the customer a preview of some of the things they could find inside.I also think it works well that the contents page and the front cover kept the same sort of colours over the two beginning pages, so it doesn’t become too in your face.I think that it is very appealing to customers the way the contents page was laid out because the first thing that the readers would see was the

main image of the reading and leeds festival, which is at the top of the page, and this is important because the customers automatically know that the magazine is based on music, and current events involving music.

This is an image of a double page spread which was in the same KERRANG! magazine as the images of the contents page and front cover above.I scanned these images onto the computer, and I specifically chose this double page spread because personally I think that this band, All Time Low, are a good looking, young, and well-known band which I think would attract a lot of attention. This is important because, as they’re a good looking band, they’re the first thing the readers would see, as they’re the main image of the whole double page spread. I think the masthead “It’s going to be a surprise!” is important because it’s bold and eye-catching, and can be easily read, and it also could mean that the readers are going to have a surprise, which could persuade them to read on.This double page spread keeps to the theme of the magazine also, because they’re a band, and KERRANG! is a music magazine, and All Time Low have had very popular songs which have made it quite high in the charts.Using All Time Low in a double page spread would have brought a lot of attention to the magazine, and it’s good that they used a band which is so well known, other than a band which isn’t as well known, or good looking.

Page 3: MAGAZINE ANALYSIS

This is an image of the front cover of the magazine NME, which I scanned onto the computer.I think this magazine cover is effective to attract customers to this music magazine.I think that, because it’s a well known magazine, it’s not important that a small part of the masthead is being covered by the main image because it’s a popular, well-known magazine.I think the font on the whole of this front cover works well because it’s bold and eye-catching, so readers can easily see the main stories which would be featured in this magazine. The colour scheme on this front cover it good because its sticking to a yellow and white theme, as the font is either yellow or white, and the model in the main image is wearing gold-yellow coloured clothes, which matches the font.I like how, in the top right hand corner, there seems to be a glowing colour of a red-orange colour, which could symbolise the image of fire, therefore meaning that the magazine could be ‘hot,’ full of the hottest new music, gossip and events which would appeal to the readers.

This is an image of the contents page from the magazine NME, which I scanned onto the computer.I think that this contents page should have kept the same colour scheme as the front cover, because I think that just using black and white could come across as boring and overly simple.I think it’s effective that the main stories have been picked out, and enlarged into pictures. This shows that the most important articles, which the readers would most likely prefer, are available for the readers to have a small preview of what they can expect inside this magazine. The font is black and bold, which makes the small articles easy to read and eye-catching.The pictures on this contents page consist of quite good looking people. This is always

a bonus for magazines, because if the people featured in it are popular and good looking, the readers are more likely to appreciate it.

This is an image of a Double page spread which is inside the NME magazine, which I scanned onto the computer.I think this double page spread is important because the artists which are featured in this magazine are well known and quite popular to the public, because they’re members of modern mainstream music. For example La Roux, and Plan B are in this double page spread, and I think that they’re each quite unique, and this could persuade the readers to find out more about them, and it would probably interest them to read about artists who are unique, instead of artists who are all the same. This double page spread matches the theme of this magazine because La Roux and Plan B are popular music artists, and this magazine is based on music.I think the way that there is small articles of writing which have been highlighted red makes those certain parts seem important and make the readers want to read it, and also breaks up the black font and makes it look more colourful and better to look at.

This is the front cover of Q magazine, which I scanned onto the computer.I think that this front cover is quite powerful, because it’s based around the very famous electro-dance group ‘The Prodigy.’

Page 5: MAGAZINE ANALYSIS

The main image is of one of the members of the group, and underneath him is the image of an earthquake, and this could mean that their music is so powerful and loud, that it’s able to create an earthquake.I think this front cover it simple, in a very good way. The colours which are used are very subtle, but it doesn’t seem plain, because of the red masthead in the corner makes it look so colourful and interesting. The font which is used on this front cover doesn’t have much quantity, but what is there, is bold and easily readable. How it says ‘The UK’s Biggest Music Magazine’ at the top of the magazine is important, because the magazine is obviously very popular and interesting to be voted the Biggest music magazine in the UK, and this would encourage readers to buy this magazine and read on, to see the reason why it is the best music magazine.

These are images of the contents pages in Q magazine, which I scanned onto the computer.I think it’s effective that the colour scheme has stayed the same as the front cover, with the simple and subtle colours, with the occasional splash of red to bring out a fierce, interesting colour. On the first contents page, the main story is obviously on page 48 with The Prodigy, because it’s the first thing which catches your eye because it’s the biggest part of the page, with the main image taking up nearly the whole of the contents page. The font throughout the contents page is simple but easy to read because the size isn’t too small, and the articles which the readers are more likely to enjoy are a slightly bigger size, and this may encourage the readers to take interest in those articles more than the others.

Page 6: MAGAZINE ANALYSIS

These are images of a double page spread in the Q magazine which I scanned onto the computer.I think that this double page spread is very powerful, mainly because of the pictures. They look aggressive and intimidating, but seem like they have so much power, and seem like very interesting people to talk to.The prodigy are one of the most well known groups this decade, and with them having the main section on this magazine, Q should have been majorly popular. The font is easy to read in this double page spread because it’s simple and the font isn’t too small. This double page spread matches with the theme of the magazine because The Prodigy are a very popular, well-known musical group, and Q is a well-known music magazine.
