The FashIon Trend

Blouses, dresses and co. conjure up images of Japan, Africa and the Middle East. Rapid and seemingly random combinations result in a global aesthetic that goes by the name of “hyperculture”.

The powerful catch-word sums up the getting together of ethnic designs from the Eighties with knitted patterns and geometric forms. It is all about a happy mingling of different motifs – new colours put the patterns in a contemporary context.

Who exactly is this trend for? All modern nomadic ladies! Leave your worries about culture shock at home and off we go!

This winter, there are two sides to the coat coin: either we swaddle ourselves up in wide-cut ponchos or astound with unconventional colour combinations radiating from an eclectic mix of patterns. Black and grey set the back-ground for deep, vibrant hues.

As the first plus size model worldwide, she paved the wayfor countless women in the modelling business. In an exclusive interview, Melissa Aronson, better known as Emme, grants us a look behind the scenes and shares her positive attitude with us.

ou were born in New York City, but raised in Saudi Arabia. Was it difficult to grow up there? Any

challenges or great experiences?

I loved growing up in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. I enjoyed it more than any of the drawbacks, namely because of my mother. Her attitude was, “you will never, ever get this chance to live in such an unconventional and out of the ordinary location. Let‘s respect what we see to gain respect in return”. It was great advice. I was able to climb a date tree, try rich coffee thick as mud, experience the dessert‘s calm at sunset, jump off slipfaces (sand dunes with a concave side) into the ocean, and had to be careful not to have scorpions climb into

my back pack during a break. It was, without question, like being plucked from a thriving metropolis and being dropped into a movie set of Lawrence of Arabia (at the time of our move, I had been living in a sleepy Long Island town after moving from NYC a couple of years before).

The observation that took getting used to from the onset was the disparity between men and women. In the heat and in public, the Arab women had to wear the traditional layers of black coverings from head to toe, walking ten paces behind the men in her family, be it her husband OR brother. It just didn‘t make sense to me then as a 7-year old, and still doesn‘t do it to me today.

As a teenager, you returned to the United States where you were discovered as a plus size model. Was it always your dream to become a model?

I probably was the only kid that didn‘t have dreams to be a model. I was tall, had some looks to me, but I was also a good athlete. Trying new things to challenge my body was fun and I usually excelled at it.

You are considered THE plus size model, playing a major role in the development of plus size fashion. Was it hard to establish yourself in the fashion industry? Which obstacles did you have to overcome?

When I began in 1989, there were a few women working in catalogues, but nothing of notoriety. When I started to work, I couldn‘t stand how some clients or photographers would speak to us, like we didn‘t exist com-pared to the straight sized (size 2 or 0 models). We were all around 1.80 m tall, but I was size 12/14 (US) and the others were so much thinner, often very hungry and not smiling, but they were the ones receiving the lion‘s share of attention and compliments. I came into modelling from

being in two professional jobs as a reporter and a journalist. From this perspective, some things just feel, look or seem right. Yet there was a disconnection and uneasiness that I based my advocacy on throughout the years. From the core, the system was flawed. The models themselves were not happy and wasting away, and the images reflected on the covers were manipulated to the point they were no longer real life reflections of the beauty used to sell the magazines. This disconnected or false image was making women chase the proverbial carrot that never would be attainable but instead was only raised higher and higher with no winning in sight.

Role models: People who don‘t give up and thrive despite what life gives them

You have beaten cancer. How has this illness changed your life and way of thinking?

The most important lesson cancer taught me was to love what I have, no matter what body I have been given, but most especially my big strong and sturdy body. . . It helped me withstand the onslaught of chemo which I could never have fought as well if I had been thin and fragile to begin with. The whole process of living with, dealing with, and surviving cancer showed me how important my body has been all my life. It got me a coveted full athletic scholar- ship to Syracuse University for rowing, I was able to wear clothes that fit a taller frame better, I held life in me with the birth of my daughter and was able to have an illustrious

To

career as a model breaking down beauty boundaries in our culture by not being something DIFFERENT than who I naturally was!

You are a role model for many girls and women. Is there anything you would like to share when it comes to a positive body image?

(Thank you!) The advice I would like to share is to embrace what you‘ve been given, to make it the best it can be, to encourage your friends to be the kind, bright, intelligent, caring, loving and creative souls they are, instead of emphasising their body shape or comparing them to stars in the limelight – this is a sure path to the self-destruction and depression that we see today. We can never, ever be something we‘re not. In order to have acceptance, we need to see that we come in three different body shapes, and no matter what we do, we can‘t change that. Yes, we can be healthy in all three shapes, but there is no way we can change the structure of what we were given at birth. We can free ourselves from such self-loathing and judgment by the simple act of self-acceptance, by learning to edit what we watch and embrace around us.

You are a definite style icon for a wealth of women. How would you describe your own style?

I have a California chic thing happening with my style. I love modern art and contemporary clothes .. . fresh clean lines, patterns, and the empire style – a nice column underneath always elongates. .. never stuffy! I enjoy shoes, oh glorious shoes, but being almost 1.82 m, I don‘t want to be any taller!!!

What are your must-haves in your wardrobe?

Keep it simple! A crisp white button down shir t with great fabric texture, an array of delicious tanks in bright and muted colours, definitely in nude, black and white. Capri denims in white, dark blue and black. Tunics and flax dresses made on the bias with chunky accessories (never earrings, bracelets, and necklaces all together!) Chose one major piece, then go for it . . . Simple hoops and a statement watch will take you far with an outrageous ‘to-die-for’ necklace from some far off place you went to – the story behind what you wear is all a part what makes you intriguing as a person.

V lIkE In loVEly A V-neck is the perfect way to make an ample bosom appear smaller because a pointed neckline optically elongates both the body and the neck. Blouses are also a fantastic option – here you can create a flattering V-shape by simply leaving the top unbuttoned. Not a fan of blouses? Then shirts with a small button placket can be your best friends. In general, button plackets are super for creating an elongating effect since they function like a visual room divider.

lESS IS MorEFancy details like frills and flounces add volume, while pale-coloured, shiny materials reflect light, with the result of enlarging what you want looking smaller. It is a better idea to opt instead for matt materials like jersey, cotton or cashmere.

rolE MoDEl MArlEnETake Marlene trousers as an example of how somewhat wider-cut, lightly flared trousers can help to visually balance out a full bust. In contrast, narrow-cut trousers only emphasise a more dominant upper body.

lIttlE hElpErSVibrant tops do more than put you in a good mood, they also add extra volume. Both shiny materials and patterns are also ideal – in addition to creating a more ample décolleté, they are also ultra trendy! For a bit more abundance at the bust, tops with frills, flounces or embroidery are also fantastic. Horizontal stripes and chest pockets can also optically sneak in a cup size.
