Editorial
Dear Readers,
Greetings to you!
Character creates self-respect which in turn leads to high self-esteem. We, the Silver Oaks
community, believe in promoting such values. We also believe that learning is not confined to the
four walls of the classroom; it is not about providing bookish knowledge but it is about developing
‘International Mindedness’ so that the child transforms to be a confident and compassionate world
citizen.
We are pleased and exuberant to present to you the school annual magazine “Milestones” for the
year 2015-2016 which is a sincere attempt from our side to showcase the creativity of our budding
talents. Through Milestones, we aspire to give shape to their creativity and learn the art of being
aware because we believe that success depends on the power to perceiving, observing and
exploring.
Milestones is a reflection of the school spirit, its thoughts and aspirations. It unleashes a wide
spectrum of creative skills ranging from writing to editing and even in designing the magazine. We
hope that this memoir of Silver Oaks helps you in recapitulating eventful journey of our acorns
during the academic year 2015-16.
We, the editorial team, would like to thank our respected Principal, Ms. Shanti Badrinarayanan, the
Management, the teachers & all the students for their contribution and support. We hope that you
will enjoy reading this souvenir as much as we have enjoyed in bringing it together for you.

Principal’s Message
Greetings and warm wishes to all
As the editorial team came pounding into my office asking me for editorial from principal’s desk, I
took time to reflect on education, more precisely education at Silver Oaks.
Here education has no end, be it the Staff, Parents or Students. We are all in the process of
enrichment.
True to our motto “Character first competence next”, we are mindful of our actions, our thoughts,
and our behavior. Creating efficiency and qualitative work are our values.
We seek to develop and nurture goodness and greatness in our students through rigorous scholastic
programme based on the learner attributes of character development. A committed and supportive
management, dedicated teachers, caring and co-operative parents, blend harmoniously to create a
happy atmosphere to enable each child to work on her/ his potential.
Our ideal structure of education follows the IB methodology and focusses on aesthetics and skill
development and lays emphasis on strengthening linguistics, computational ability and scientific
thought process. Through speakers at Silver Oaks, Human Calculator, science fundas and spell bee
children are encouraged to be risk takers, knowledgeable and reflective thinkers.
By fostering a conducive and caring environment, we instill in our children a desire to learn at the
same time have social, emotional, physical and intellectual development. Students learn to be open
minded and creative.
Thus we at Silver Oaks truly follow Herbert Spencers “The great aim of education is not knowledge
but actions”.
Students of the “Gen Next” should be equipped with character and competence, and it is our
earnest endeavor to equip them with the right aptitude required for academic excellence and also
ready to face life’s challenges in a balanced and harmonious way.
Each issue of our school magazine is thus a Milestone that marks our growth; unfold our imagination
and gives life to our creative skills. I am happy that the students have used 'Milestone' as a spring
board for their budding journalistic and artistic skills. The compilation of second edition of milestone
was a mammoth task. The editorial team had to cull out the best original stories, poems and art
work from the house magazines.
Thus this Milestone exceeds expectation as it produces a comprehensive representation of best
work and hope it will open a window of imagination, ignite pleasure. I congratulate the entire
editorial team for their hard work and dedication in making this annual chore a hall mark

Many years ago I read the book 'The Three Questions’ by Jon Muth based on a story by Leo Tolstoy. The story takes you through the adventure of a young boy Nikolai, as he makes animal friends. Nikolai's is uncertain about the right way to act. He wants to be a good person but don't know the best ways to do that. "If only I could find the answers to my three questions, then I would always know what to do."
Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do? When is the best time to do things?
He learns from his experiences during the adventurous trip that: There is only one important time, and that time is Now The most important person is always the one you are with. The most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side.
These are the answers to what is most important in this world. I wish you my dear students abundance of good luck and God speed to always be ready to be a good person. Wishing all of you joy on this day and every day.
Regards
Ms. Shanthi Bhadrinarayanan

Spell Bee: At the turn of every week, the acorns from Grade1-6 get ready to participate in the spell
bee. It is a competition in which contestants spell a broad selection of words. It is works as an
invaluable tool for language improvement. A healthy competitive spirit builds self-confidence and
helps them to reach their full potential.
Human Calculator: Individuals develop their mental agility in terms of accuracy and speed through
human calculator. It makes mathematics a fun-filled exercise which helps in building mastery in
Maths.
Speakers at Silver Oaks: All students participate, receive feedback and improve their skills in
speaking, expressing their opinion and debate during Speakers at Silver Oaks Event.
MUN Conference Model United Nations (MUN), is an educational stimulation sessions that aim to achieve sustainable
progress in the knowledge of current events and also to equip the students to be capable of taking
over as future responsible global citizens. It’s an effective platform for the students to learn about
diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations.
On 11th & 12 of December, students from Silver Oaks, Bangalore attended a stimulating MUN
session hosted by Canadian International School. Aarush and Sneha from Grade VI and, Anvit from
Grade VII were part of the UNHRC and discussed the possible solutions to the Syrian refugee crisis.
They had thought-provoking discussion which tested the ability of the group to solve the sudden
crisis that had come up. It was definitely an enjoyable learning experience.

Field Trips It was a wonderful and exciting academic year for Silver Oaks as our acorns had the opportunity to
visit different places for field trips during the inquiries to enrich their learning. Field trips are a great
way for students to put skills they learn in the class into action. There are three different types of
learning- visual, auditory and tactile. The field trip was very informative and it exposed learners to
new experiences which led new interests and reflection.
Visit to fire station Pre Primary-1 had a fire station visit on 1st October 2015 as part of their
inquiry “How we organize ourselves”. The children were exploring how
Community helpers organize our safety and wellbeing. Children were
very excited about the visit and joyfully sang fire engine song. On the
way, they noticed many community
helpers like shopkeeper, mason,
mechanic.... In the fire station
children saw live demonstration of
different methods of putting off
the fire. They saw fire engine and its
compartment with various tools in it and even the fire bike
named ‘Agni’. Children were quite impressed with the firemen
and they started addressing them as superheroes. The acorns
thanked the firemen by offering them a card expressing their
gratitude for making the community a safer place to live.
A Visit to Lal Bagh Botanical Garden The children of Pre Primary I & II visited Lal Bagh in connection with
their inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’. The children were able to see the
beautiful array of flowers that were on display for the Annual Flower
Show during Republic Day. Fascinating decoration of flowers in the form
pretty fairy made the children full of wonder .They saw huge trees, the
lake and a fountain too!
Post Office and Park trips by Grade 1 The Academic Session of 2015-16 was a great learning
experience for the acorns of Grade 1. Experiential learning was
one of the highlight of the program where acorns explored &
observe various concepts that enhance their learning to a large
extent. To provide a visual learning, learners were taken to
various places. These trips were not just fun-experiences for
learners, but also stimulate learning beyond what books and
videos can provide to the learning environment. In connection
to this, Grade 1 visited Bannerghatta National Park, Post office
21
and Rose nursery.
Field trip to the Koramangala Post Office was associated with the Theme ‘Where we are in place and
time.’ Children understood the importance of address writing and explored how letter reaches
home. They made connections to what they had learnt in the class and loved identifying different
signs/symbols and landmarks. As a part of ‘action
taken’ they enthusiastically shared their
understanding with classmates and teachers. Going
further, the explanation given by the Postmaster,
buying the stamps and finally posting the letters were
the most thrilling experiences they had.
Field trip to Bannerghatta was another captivating
experience where they squealed and squirmed with
joy at the sight of the animals and birds in the park.
They were thrilled to find out various facts about living
things and played, learnt & rejoiced under the blue
sky. Learners en route the inquiry by wondering on
how few animal crocodile and alligator, turtle and tortoise look similar but called with different
name. Further, this student initiated inquiry facilitated learners to explore more about the distinct
features of living things.
Inclusively, Field trips are an integral part of our school curriculum. Adventurous and diverse trips
help children have rich and memorable experiences which expand their horizons, build their self-
confidence and support their sustainable learning.
Visit to “Samarthnam” A field trip is a visit to a place outside the regular classroom which is designed to achieve certain
objectives, which cannot be achieved as well by using other means. Taking students on a field trip
makes learning more effective as they will be able to gain vast ideas on the topic. For a successful
field trip, the students need to know why they are going there and what they will learn and bring
back with them before they even board the bus.
In connection to our inquiry
“How we express ourselves”
which was about the different
forms of communication, the
Grade 2 acorns of “Silver Oaks
School” had the opportunity to
visit a NGO for differently abled
people named “Samarthanam”
near HSR layout wherein they
had a chance to explore,
observe and learn about the
methodology followed by them
to read and write.
22
Differently challenged people use various ways to
communicate. They use sign language (adapted
to fit their visual field), tactile sign language,
tracking, tactile finger spelling, print on palm,
Braille, speech, and speechreading. The
communication methods vary with each person,
depending on the cause of their vision and
hearing loss.
Our learners had a very interactive session with
the students of “Samarthanam”. They tried
picking up all the alphabets from them by using the sign language method that they follow.
There were Braille printers, keyboards for typing, software of the kind that aided the visually
impaired kids with computers. There was this one software called “JAWS” that converted whatever
was on the computer into audio to help the visually
challenged. Our children spelled out their names and
it was just amazing to see the Samarthanam children
typing it for them.
These children answered all our questions and
pushed the shadows away with confidence,
perseverance and enlightenment. Seeing their
positive attitude towards life made our learners
realize that eyesight cannot be greater than inner
vision.
The Alumni of “Samarthanam” have many jobs and roles: teachers, professors, counselors,
homemakers, business executives, government workers, and others. Parting these new friends was
hard. We were honoured to be a part of their lives although for few hours.

Guest Lectures
Musical Session by Ms V Aravinda: On Monday, 11th December, 2015, Grade 1 had a Musical
session by our guest speaker, Ms V Aravinda, for the inquiry
‘How we express ourselves.’ Ms V Aravinda (Software
engineer by profession and a trained classical singer), mother
of Aniruddha Grade 1A, conducted an interactive & engaging
session with the children. Children enjoyed and experienced
different feelings through music. They identified the
difference between sound & music and also understood that
music describe the situations and feelings. Children
experienced the same with different musical role plays and
dramatization. It was fun learning experience for teachers as
well as for children.
Emotions through Music: Ms Mahalakshmi: Grade 1 had organized the ‘Guest lecture’ on different emotions
through music for the inquiry ‘How we express ourselves’ on
Wednesday, 18th November, 2015. Ms Mahalakshmi helped
children exploring about various expressions with the help of
songs & rhymes. They sang and enacted the various sounds and
emotions related to the music. It was a good provocation to
proceed to a fresh inquiry.
Saving Our Planet: Ms Victoria Smith Earth is very good at recycling waste, but we are generating far more than earth can cope with.
Pollution occurs at different levels and it doesn't just impact our planet, it impacts all species,
including mankind, who dwell on it.
Only humans can think and act to make positive
changes in the environment but unfortunately,
humans are the most polluting species on the planet.
Children of today will inherit a planet that isn't very
healthy. There is nothing we can do to change the past;
we can only try to create a better and brighter future.
Ms Victoria Smith is a certified eco-therapist, who
works on improving the relationship between human
beings and the environment.
The Grade 2 children of Silver oaks had a wonderful opportunity to have an extraordinary start to
their last theme of this academic year “Sharing the Planet” with Ms Victoria Smith. Nature instils in
everyone a sense of beauty and calmness. It exposes us to things that are alive and growing, and
promotes curiosity and exploration. This is exactly what Ms Smith tried to provoke in the young
learner’s mind. She tried to motivate the children of Grade 2 to love, care and protect the nature
24
through her amazing story telling session which included nature based activities, eco art and clay
modelling.
The Grade 2 acorns of silver oaks visited the Kaikondrahalli Lake for a Nature walk. In spite of the
burning heat, children still made whole way around the lake, scavenging for treasures of the nature
items for their activities back at school which
Ms Vicky had planned.
After coming back to school, Ms Victoria
started her story telling session and it was
amazing to watch how imagination just
started flowing as children recreated the
Kaikondrahalli Lake and other clay models
using those natural items. All senses became
engaged and the children started interacting
with the natural world.
There can never be too much nature inside a
classroom. We must make sure the next generation has the opportunity to have meaningful
encounters with nature, because they cannot grow to love nature if they do not experience it.
Protecting the environment today will help us to have a better tomorrow. If kids can play a role in
helping to save the earth, it will be great and we can together strive towards a cleaner and greener
Earth.
Good Reading Habits: Anvit Kelkar As a part of the inquiry, ‘How We Express ourselves?’ Anvit Kelkar from Grade 7 was invited as a
guest speaker to grade 3 to promote good reading habits. He gave some valuable tips to students on
how to choose a book and be a lifelong good reader.
Illustrating a story by Cartoonist, Mr.Balraj In connection with our fourth inquiry “How we express ourselves” we invited Mr.Balraj, a cartoonist
and an illustrator by profession. Mr Balraj’s cartoons and illustrations are published in well-known
newspapers like Bangalore Mirror and The Hindu. The
students got an opportunity to explore and create a
story by illustrations. According to him, the best way
to draw is to observe, absorb and having your own
creativity and style in order to catch people’s
attention and interest. Mr Balraj also introduced the
students to draw panels for a comic strip, express
their stories through cartoons.

Author Visit: Ms Srividya Srinivasan On December 8th, Children of Grade 3 along with their teachers had a fun filled interactive session
with an author of “A thick fat finger and other stories”,
Ms Srividya Srinivasan, in connection with the inquiry,
‘How we express ourselves.’ The theme of the
discussion was - how people develop imagination and
learn through stories and rhymes. Ms Srinivasan told
the students that story is an interesting way of
expressing through varied forms like pictures, rhymes,
music, dance, writing etc. All of us think and perceive
things differently therefore even if we see the same
thing we make up different stories. She encouraged the
kids to concentrate on their own ideas and have fun while writing.
Earth and the Changes it has undergone: Ms Tsae
ling Kwok In relation the theme “Where we are in place and time” and inquiry
into “Earth and the changes it has undergone” Ms Tsae ling Kwok was
invited to interact with learners about ‘BALI AND LOMBOK’. It was a
great learning experience for learners to get deeper understanding
about continental drift of these islands and about Wallace line.
Learners also explored the cultural aspects of these Islands.
Crucial Conversations: Mr Vineet For the theme ‘Sharing the Planet’, a presentation was showcased
on crucial conflicts. The guest speaker, Mr Vineet Mehrotra, talked
about how crucial conflicts can be recognized and resolved.
Students learnt that one of the easiest way to resolve a conflict is
to relax, and talk it out and reach mutual understanding,
eventually to solve it. The presentation experience was really
informative and entertaining as Mr Vineeth added humour to the
presentation to make it more interesting.

100 Days Exhibition
Having a glimpse of a child’s routine at school is
always been a point of eagerness for any parent.
They love to witness their child’s progress in a
systematic environment. On 7th November, the
students from Pre-primary wing till Grade III
hosted “100 Days Exhibition” respectively to
showcase the routine and the learning during the
first 100 days of our session.
‘My learned world’ theme was celebrated for the
Pre-Primary wing. The students enjoyed a break
from their normal routines and were quite ecstatic that their parents were involved and were an
important part of the event. Various stations were arranged that related to different parameters of
learning. Children displayed their learning with great enthusiasm at math station, language station,
inquiry station through games and various
activities. There was also a creative corner where
the children displayed their creativity using
crayons, paper and clay. All this activities gave
parents a good sense of understanding of teaching
methodology in school. The entire event helped
children to enhance their skills – communication
skills, social skills, thinking skills and self-
management skills. Children felt a deep sense of
pride in showing their parents all that they could
do!
Grade I students were quite enthusiastic about the exhibition. Various displays in the classroom
exhibited clear conceptual understanding of the
learners. Learners took lead of their own learning
and presented different stations confidently to
their parents. Children loved to work on the
Paper cup castle making and compared theirs
with their friends. Demonstration on save water
was also quite appreciated by the parents the
hands-on experience helped to register the
concepts in the minds of the student at a deeper
level. Mathematical place value, Words sorting
activity, Addition centre etc. were fun for the
children.
It was a wonderful view in Grade II classroom as the students got into the spirit of the day, took
pride in leading the exhibition and sharing their learning experiences with their parents. It was a
perfect platform to showcase the learner’s understanding of the five essential elements—
28
knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action. It was
quite fulfilling to see the transition of some students
who were usually passive observer to bloom to be the
leaders of the conference. Parents also got a chance to
assess their own child by putting forth probing
questions, listening and spending time with their child
and the most importantly seeing what school is like
through the “eyes of their child”.
100 days exhibition is an effective platform for Grade III students,
to present their Inquiry Cycle on the 3 themes and interact with
their and friends parents. It provided an opportunity to the
students to reflect and share on their learning, set goals for
continued growth, and demonstrate their 5 Essential skills and the
Attributes of the IB Learner Profile to their parents and teaching
community. The day involved talking about the inquiry cycle,
activity demonstrations through music and dance. Students
prepared Math, Language and Science stations to exhibit their
hands on learning activities. The day culminated by pinning the
attribute badges by the parents to students.
We express our gratitude to all the parents who turned up and
helped in making the event successful.

FRENCH NATIONAL DAY The French National Day or The Bastille Day
commemorates the beginning of the French
Revolution with the Storming of the Bastille on 14
July 1789, which celebrated the unity of the French
people on 14 July 1790. Celebrations are held
throughout France.
Because of this, Bastille became a symbol of the
oppressive monarchy and was the reason why it was
targeted by the people of Paris when they stormed
the fortress on July 14, 1789. Though there were
only seven prisoners held in Bastille that day, the
revolt was hugely symbolic of liberation of the
French public, which continues to be a central part of France’s core ideals which are represented by
its three-color flag: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity for all.
The French military make their way along Champs-Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de
la Concorde and thousands in Paris gather along the streets of Paris to watch this.
French National Day was celebrated by the students of Grade I to VIII on 17July 2015 at
Silver Oak, Bangalore little more lighthearted but still carried a great deal of tradition.
The aim to host this celebration by the students was to
make them think, and to prepare about this important
day of France, from a global perspective and to learn
about a country, its culture and people.
The students presented their topics very well in a
hilarious style and this kindled the curiosity of the
audience in knowing the culture and civilization of
France. The highlight of the program was the superb
performance of Grade II children who exhibited their
talents in the dance for “Je m'appelle Funny bear" and received good applause from the audience.
To signify the importance of this day all the students in the school pinned the French Flag on
their chest. In a very unique way they expressed their global thinking truly reflecting their learning of
the IB Philosophy in Silver Oak Bangalore. Kudos were given to these children who staged a fantastic
show and the curtains were drawn.
This day was cherished by all students and they took back home the happy memories of their show.

Independence Day
"A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new… India discovers herself again."
- J. L. Nehru
Independence Day is celebrated with utmost joy and happiness to pay a mark of respect to our freedom fighters because of whom we are breathing an air of freedom.
It was fun and frolic at Silver Oaks School as the children celebrated the Independence Day here. Our theme for the 69th Independence Day was “International mindedness.”
While occasions like Independence Day kindle interest in the students as well the teachers. To mark the celebrations, an assemblage of events took place such as patriotic songs, a thought provoking skit, dances and much more.
The Independence Day event commenced with the hoisting of the Indian flag by our honourable chief guest, Ms.Anitha Kurup who is a Professor in The School of Social Sciences and Anchor of the Education Program at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS). This
was followed by an endearing performance from Pre Primary children who manifested the glimpses of leaders of our country and the Indian culture through the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’. Our melodious Choir group inspired us with the Kannada song ‘ Vishwa Vinuthana Vidya Chethana’. By highlighting the linguistic communities and societies in India, acorns spring to the patriotic song ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumharaa’.
We have seen many great leaders, freedom fighters and spiritual leaders but some of the leaders have
had not only been an influence on their own countries but made a difference in the whole world. To pay tribute to these leaders, Grade 1 jogged our memory with the inspirational quotes of The Great Leaders of the World.
We as a school want to make the goals of education as harmony with oneself people, society and nature. We look for a role model and idealistic philosophy and we found our answers from our father of nation. As a school we want to
31
bring congruence in our academic curriculum with the value curriculum as given by Gandhiji. To validate these views, the students of Grade V to VIII presented the skit “Mantras of Mahatma”.
International mindedness is an ability to understand and interact with others, knowledge of other cultures and histories, and the ability to speak in more than one language and consider issues from multiple points of view. Acorns of Silver Oaks showcased these aspects through Halls of Fame which were inaugurated by our chief guest Ms.Anitha Kurup. The Hall of Fame showcased our theme of International Mindedness through three Galleries.
The Freedom Movement Gallery depicted how ordinary men became the heroes of our country and world over, faced the toughest challenges and fought for their cause with unmatched courage, perseverance and an indomitable spirit have faced toughest challenges
Historical Perspective Gallery gave a glimpse of historical perspective and significance of celebrating Cultural and National festivals of countries around the world.
“Change is inevitable “is the key aspect of the Social Renaissance Gallery. This gallery helped us to understand the essence of lives of the world famous leaders during the movements that helped in re-birth of the societies.
This 69th Independence Day was event to rededicate ourselves to
the fundamental culture of our country. We believe in harmony with the universe, emphasized freedom and not be restricted to a particular region. We believe that behavior of an individual as a member of the society namely non- violence in word and deed, truthfulness. We, the Acorns of Silver Oaks, everyday strive to live the same through actions believing that one should not differentiate on the basis of caste, language and religion.

UNIVERSAL CHILDREN’S DAY
‘Children are the future citizens of the country. The future of the country depends upon the present children. If the children do not develop in a proper way, the country's future will be ruined.’ These were the words of our late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Since 1956, his birthday, 14th of November is observed in India as the Children's Day. November 20th is also a special day for children as Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on this date.
Silver Oaks celebrates Universal Children's Day to as a tribute to all the children in the world and also to pay respect to the beliefs of Pandit Nehru. It was fun-filled day for children full of surprises and action. The students came in colored dress, and it was quite nice to see everyone in their best attire.
The first surprise was classes to be taken by shuffled teachers i.e. different teachers came to teach classes that were not theirs’. It was quite fun to see how we could learn the same thing, but in a different way!
After our first break, we went for a special assembly for grades 3 and up to discuss why we were celebrating Children's Day and what its significance was. The best part was that our principal, Shanti Ma'am, made it very interesting and interactive.
We, the students of Grades VI to VIII, went to teach the junior grades some fun things. My friend Rusheel and I went over to the second graders and taught them how to draw some cool optical illusions.
There was an Inter-house Spell Bee Contest for classes III-VIII and junior classes. It was now time to indulge in some fun games conducted by teachers like Geography Search, "Stack the cones," Tangram, Slingshot, Amazing Angles, Will you able to pick me up?, Colour world word magic!, Balance it! Whirl! Swirl! Twirl! Feed the monster!, Fix a tail and many more. Craft ideas made children very much thrilled about their head gears with googly eyes and curly horns! Wall Mural activity buttressed our young tiny artists. Teachers made the day, “Fun day” for the acorns!
We concluded the day with a short assembly in which the winners for the Camel Art Contest and those who qualified for the national level in the Romain Rollande French exam were given their awards. We ended the day with a short party. The entire day was fun and educative. We all enjoyed ourselves and at the same time, learnt a lot. What a nice day!

Stirring Session by Ms. Khyrunnisa Authors are the creators of the imaginary world! I had a prodigious dream to bring an author who specially writes for children, who would motivate our acorns about reading and writing to our school. We were honoured to have a visit from renowned author Ms. Khyrunnisa. Creator the popular comic character butterfingers for the children’s magazine ‘Tinkle’ and prize-winning author of children’s fiction, Ms. Khyrunnisa enticed the children with her witty jokes and interesting description of the characters from her series Butterfingers. She also shared her thoughts about what inspired her to become an author, what motivated her to write the stories on games. She introduced her books by narrating the thrilling segments of the story books. After the mind-boggling session, our acorns were keen to take an autograph from the author!
Ms.Khyrunnisa’s books reached 67 readers within a week at Silver Oaks!
Readers really enjoyed it!
The feedback from our acorns - “Wonderful session by the author and her books are Awesome! It was a great pleasure to have an author autographed book! Loved it!”
Potpourri The noun ‘Potpourri’ can refer to a mixture or collection of seemingly unrelated items, an unusual assortment. Our ‘Potpourri’ is a miscellaneous compendium of stories and poems to encourage our young writers and young artists. We received wonderful thrilling stories and fascinating.
Poems from our acorns! On 29th January we released our first edition of ‘Potpourri’. During the book release, young writers introduced their stories and illustrators about their pictures! Our
‘Potpourri’ has been shared in our Silver Oaks Facebook page. Have a look and comment, we appreciate your feedback about it!

Dear, Dear D. E. A. R. is Here!!!
Drop everything and Read time, known as D. E. A. R. time. D.E.A.R. Is an effective programme, a great way to get everyone reading! A DEAR session consists of getting the whole school to stop, drop what they are doing and to read, for pleasure.
D.E.A.R. programs have been held on April 12th in honor of Beverly Cleary’s birthday, since she first wrote about D.E.A.R. in Ramona Benefits of being part of DEAR Programme:
The reader improves his reading skills in a unique and fun environment. He tries to achieve new limits by developing a “can do” attitude and in the process boosts the confidence. It improve oral skills. It helps in providing individualized mentoring for each child it provides a personalized environment for reading. It complements the existing literacy program Flexible, cost-effective program that is easy to implement in any settings Silver Oaks, Bangalore celebrated DEAR programme by making the programme
all inclusive. A special bell was rung and as the word
DEAR says Drop Everything and Read, that’s exactly what every member of our school did. They would leave everything and engross their next 20 minutes into the world of reading. This unique
programme was indeed quite effective in creating a wonderful reading atmosphere!!
Thunder Cake! “Close your eyes! Open your ears!!
Very soon the Thunder will crash!
The Lightning will flash!!
We will bake a thunder cake!!
But not in a bakery!!
It’s in our Library!!!
All are welcome to bake a cake!”
These lines were on the board to lure everyone, the students and the teachers, to join our Read aloud session in our library. The library was filled with darkness and created an atmosphere of suspense in the minds of our curious readers. The cloudy weather and absolute darkness with flashes of lightning here and there…..The students had to find their way around in the darkness to settle down in a shady library, really the readers were in special ether.
36
‘Thunder Cake’ by Patricia Polacco had been chosen for the read aloud session. During the read-aloud session, lightning flashed, thunder sound crashed, rain sound effect made audience to go through the feelings and shivered, frozen in the library for a while!
Students enjoyed the suspenseful and thrilling session!!

Annual Opera -Alice in Wonderland
On 19th of December, 2015, Annual Opera, one of the most special and awaited event of our session was hosted by Silver Oaks. It is a dynamic platform where the whole school becomes part of the theme chosen for the Opera. This year, we chose Alice in Wonderland as our theme which is a story of a young girl and her adventures in a world of fantasy. This is one of the most popular stories with children and adults alike, bringing together the ideas of adventure, exploration and philosophy.
The protagonist of the story, Alice, takes us down a rabbit hole (literally and figuratively) and introduces us to talking animals, card soldiers and magically creatures that help her explore the world around her and understand her better. She, finally, emerges as hero saving the fantasy world from a dictatorial queen.
The Annual Opera started with the School song. This event is also the time to reflect on the last year’s achievements and challenges. To share this, our Principal, Ms. Shanti Badrinarayan presented the Annual Report of the School. The students had put up an amazing show where they played their characters with full commitment and honesty. There were many melodious songs along the
way on which the students performed peppy and graceful dances. Just as Alice learns from her experiences and ultimately becomes responsible, the event helps the students to understand the importance of curiosity, exploration and adventure as key learning tools in life.
Working tirelessly and maintaining a great balance between classes and practice Silver Oaks acorns and teachers put together a fantastic rendition of the 3rd Annual Opera “Alice in Wonderland”.
38
As a culmination of our unit of inquiry “How We Express Ourselves”. Students reflected upon their characters and the entire drama -
“In the play, I was the king of hearts, who was short heighted. He persuades the queen who was bossy and unkind not to harm Alice. I learnt about that opera helps you to express your feelings and story becomes very interesting and real with stage and characters.” Nikhil Grade III
“In the opera, I was one of the five Alice’s, playing the role of Alice in the scene 3 and 4. I was happy to be one of the main characters. This play has helped me understand my facial expression—happy, sad, angry etc. It helped me reading scripts with voice modulation and improved my reading skills. It was my first opera, which I enjoyed alot.” Aanvi. Grade III

STUDENT LED CONFERENCE - Grades IV-VIII
Student led conference is a great opportunity for learners to showcase their learning throughout the year. The proactive acorns transformed into student teachers and led the conference to give an experience of INQUIRY based LEARNING to their parents. In the process, the students took the ownership of their learning and planned the learning engagements for their parents. Every Grade had its unique style of showcasing their learning-
Grade IV had chosen the theme “Sharing the planet”. The students of the class guided the parents through the whole of inquiry. The classroom was divided into stations. The inquiry started with PYP BLOBTREE- “Where is your understanding of inquiry process” This was followed by TUNING IN where they guided to test their prior knowledge. They have to, then, proceed to next station that encouraged parents to find answers for some questions they asked in tuning in stage. Stations such
as “SORTING OUT” and “GOING FURTHER” helped the parents to sort their learning by building food chains and webs and, assess their understanding so as to take the next step in their learning about Food chains. Once this understanding is established they advanced to a stage where they ‘make connections’ like integrating learning with math by showing energy flow in food chain through Fractions. The Inquiry concluded with “TAKING ACTION” where, learners encouraged parents to
take a personal pledge to safeguard the ecosystems and make their learning Fruitful.
Grade V students wanted to give an experience of their learning to the parents by planning the strategies to teach the parents and preparing for the board presentations. Each student judged his/her parents’ presentation by using six thinking hats and provided the suggestions to improve and appreciated the best part of the presentation. Parents were impressed to see their children as the student-teachers and took part enthusiastically during transdisciplinary approach of the individual subjects especially Student Led Conference had given an opportunity to the students to become confident communicators and parents had an understanding of the inquiry process.
41
Grade VI shared their learning of the unit “How the world works” with their parents. Before starting the inquiry the students gave the parents chits to guide them to their respective group; Alpha, Beta,
Gamma and Delta. Ganya who helped the parents make their name tents. Once this was done, Viswa introduced the blob tree to the parents and made them place themselves on it. Subsequently, Aarush and Dhwani came in and helped the parents crack the central idea. Later on, Karthik and Shrutha displayed their presentation on simple machines and refreshed the memory of the so called students about simple machines. Inference sheets were given to the parents for better understanding. Rusheel did a Powtoon presentation which was
applauded by all. Sneha and Sahana shared the application of a few experiments.Parents were taken through the real life applications of a few scientific principles around us. To give the better idea of transdisciplinary approach, they were taken through a ride of the maths inquiry.
The theme of Grade VII and VIII was “Interconnectedness”. Anvit and Varun explained their understanding of grade 7 whereas Vyjayanth, of Grade VIII, explained ‘going further’ of the concepts. They started preparation of this conference with ‘Begin with End in Mind’ i.e.begin with what they have learnt and end with making connections between disciplines. This ‘interconnectedness’ was shown through concepts like , the architecture of mughals with measurements and angles;learning of vegetative reproduction as a part of going further and connecting it with various methods of doing agriculture ; the origin of democracy to the origin of various phrases ; and disaster management with campaigning for a cause. The experience of preparation and ultimately leading the conference was an incredible learning experience. It not only motivated them but helped them to develop better clarity and depth of the topic. They were able to understand the practical application of the concepts.
Students made the sessions interesting with some working models and displayed charts.Students have showcased good Communication skills to make an interactive session. They have also discussed their smart goal, in which they were made to identify their weakness in each subject and work towards making it one of their strengths. Through the plethora of the inquiry experiences that the parents had no other words they had for ‘Student Teachers’ except “WOW!!”

Activity Day
All work and no play can make Jack and Jill dull. Here the ‘acorns of Silver Oaks’ know how to
balance themselves with work and play. Our acorns know how to explore every opportunity and
develop themselves into Inquirers, good communicators, knowledgeable people and above all try to
become the greatest risk-takers.
This year, the Inter school houses made our sports day more challenging and exciting as every effort
added points to our house. We have been keeping the record of the performance of each house and
constantly monitoring the tally board for house points.
In team sports there are - Basketball and Football, while individual games include Tennis, Table
Tennis and Chess. There was the same enthusiasm on the the track and field events.
Through all these events we had a clear view of our strength, stamina and the spirit needed to stay
strong and focused on the field. We won great appreciations from all for exhibiting true
sportsmanship and exemplary character. We stood true to our ideology; ‘character first, competence
next.
Inter House Spell bee Competition
An inter house senior spell bee competition was conducted
during the children’s day celebration on 20 th November,
2015. Five people from each group were selected from each
house (seniors) for the competition. There were three
rounds in total.
The first round was a
written round. This
round was for 10 points in total. All of us got all the words
correct. The second round was an oral round. The judge
would give us a word and we had to discuss in our group and
then one person had to answer it. Next round was the last and
was a rapid fire round.
We quickly finished this round and our scores were as follows:
Caring-180, Communicator-190, Principled-60, Balanced-170. By just ten points Communicator won
the competition. This is how our spell bee competition.
As the saying go SOMETIMES YOU WIN SOMETIMES YOU LEARN AND WINNING PROVIDES

Inter-House Senior Football Competition in January
Silver Oaks, The School of Bangalore held an Inter-House Senior Football Competition in January .
The Students in our school are grouped in four houses namely, Communicators, Caring, Balanced
and Principles. Our team (Communicators) played against Principled team.
We commenced the event with a short
assembly. And after that, we charted out
pairing of the teams playing opposite to
each other and the sequence of the
event. When we had the time to
ourselves, Anvit and I, the captain and the
Vice-captain of our team, decided to start
off with the DA1 formation: a formation
that was mostly defensive and also
focused on attacking with midfield being
given less importance.
The game started off with a quick goal
scored by Arnav of the Principled team from which our team was never really able to recover. A little
before half-time, they were able to score another goal. The score was now 2-0! Half time came a bit
too fast. I could seriously have done with 5 more minutes to try and score a goal. During the break
we decided to switch to the formation A1: a formation that gave importance to attacking. Also, we
had Anvit as the goalkeeper in the second half of the game.
After half-time Principled team got the ball again, came close to our goal, shot, and by a stroke of
luck one of us was able to kick the ball only to be intercepted and have the process start again. The
Principled team used the same tactic they used at the beginning of the game, and were able to score
a goal against Anvit. The time passed, and pretty soon it was obvious that the ball would need a
miracle to get out of our half.
I was mostly hanging around as a defense player, as I had got a good plan that I knew would at least
increase our morale. After yet another almost goal, Anvit kicked the ball, but instead of the usual
cycle, I intercepted the ball and kept running. The Principled team, which had been lulled into a false
sense of security, started struggling when faced by a rested me. Once I was in the D, I kicked the
ball. If the kick had been a few degrees off, it would have been a miss. A little ways in the other
direction, and it would have been an obvious interception. But it wasn’t! The ball went straight to
the goalkeeper, who by some stroke of luck had his legs open, and just barely missed his feet by a
few millimeters on each side, and went straight into the goal!!! I don’t know what was better: seeing
the stunned look on the faces of everyone, the cheer of the crowd, or seeing the ball bounce around
in the goalpost a few times before being tangled in the net. However, it was too late. We had just 90
seconds to get at least 2 goals, and though the tide had started changing, it had definitely started
changing a bit too late. Soon we heard the whistle, and left the field after a few handshakes. The
Communicator’s senior football team was held to a 3-1 loss by the senior. team of Principled, who
went on to win the finals.
We all knew we had been eliminated, and to all of us, it was a little too harsh to take in after we had
given our best into the entire game. The truth that we had lost was even harsher for Anvit and I,
44
because after all of our planning, it had been of absolutely no use because we realized (very late,
around the last 90 secs) that we just had to be a team and attack or defend according to the case.

ROHAN AND THE DRAGON TAMER
Once upon a very long time ago, there was a kingdom that had rested in peace
for many years. All the people were prospering and loved their king until one
day… a dragon tamer came with all his dragons to attack. The king sent many
soldiers to defend his beloved people, but it all failed and the kingdom was
burned to cinders. No one survived except for a young boy named Rohan.
Feeling very sad and depressed, he walked around the entire kingdom looking
for anyone; anyone who could be with him and help him escape his loneliness.
However, finding no one, Rohan vowed to take his revenge on the evil dragon
tamer.
He started thinking up a battle plan to fight the dragon tamer when he finally
decided which version he should follow. He started going around looking for
animals to help him, for he knew if you don’t have gold, you may have silver.
Having the second best thing did not bother Rohan one bit, since he got
everything second hand from his brother. The animals also wanted to help
Rohan since they had lost their homes to the dragon tamer. Every day Rohan
would train the animals and help them, never pushing too hard, always using
them to their strengths and therefore making for himself a strong army.
After months of hard training, the animals were ready to find the dragon tamer.
Rohan sent the birds to know what was going on in the skies; the worms to
know what was happening under the ground; and the rest of the animals
searched the Earth fruitlessly. They searched and they searched. They looked
and looked. They scoured the North, the South, the East, and the West. They
found nothing.
Finally, one day, the worms heard noises. The birds saw smoke. The rest of the
animals found footprints. Rohan told the elephants to sound their call, for the
animals were ready to take their revenge. They charged.
During this time, the dragon tamer had been attacking other kingdoms and
ruining those lands. He never expected there to be any survivors who would
fight Verno the Mighty Dragon Tamer. And so, when the elephants sounded the
battle cry, Verno had no idea what to do. He had attackers, but not defenders.
He knew how to attack, but had no idea how to defend. So he had to take a big
risk and attack the attackers.
51
Rohan led them all, heightened their spirits. All the animals followed their hero,
Rohan, and fought as bravely as him. The injustice they had experienced
became their energy. The dragon was judged for mercilessly attacking the
people of various kingdoms and punished accordingly.
After the long fight that ensued, with Rohan’s animals winning, Rohan went
straight to where Verno was. Each drew their sword. Each fought with all their
might, knowing what was at stake. They fought into the night. They continued
to fight the next morning. Finally, the overworked Verno was left with no
choice. He had fought hard, but he had taken too many risks. He had
overestimated himself too much. He surrendered to Rohan and told him that his
fellow friends and family from the kingdom were actually in his castle and told
Rohan where the castle was.
Rohan went on to free everyone trapped in Verno’s castle and give Verno
another chance. When his kingdom was rebuilt, Rohan was chosen as the next
king and went on to rule his kingdom fairly and efficiently. He was known as a
hero for his great character and for the way he saw the good in everyone, never
was partial, and always worked for the whole.

Gold ring
On a sunny day, I and my friend head outside to play.
In my yard, I have noticed something sticking out from a pile of
melting snow. Without our parents’ permission we both started
digging.
” Look!” exclaims my friend. “It’s a ring!”
When we observed the ring closely, we noticed it was made of
tiny diamonds with a big diamond at the top. I immediately
thought this was princess twinkle’s ring. To confirm this, we
took the ring outside in the starry sky. The ring glowed like the
brightest star with a yellow circle and my
thought was proven right! To give the ring back,
I had to say “Abracadabra Gilligilli Chhoo ringy
Twinke billy joo”. This had to be said under the
brightest star wearing a yellow crown. When I
said that, Princess Twinkle appeared. She let
me know that the ring was now mine. She said
this ring was called the ring of stars. So now, I wear the ring
and make the stars twinkle.

An investigation into the lifecycle of a butterfly
As a PYP educator, I have always wondered how we could develop scientific temperament in the young learners’ mind. Scientific skills are very important as they promote observation skills and curiosity. Curiosity has a major role in many scientific processes. I just recall what I read “Young Children are Often Called Natural Scientists.” They have a natural proclivity towards the world they live in. Their day starts with asking-how, why, where, who and what. Developing scientific temperament in early years will allow them to understand how the world works and how we share the planet with other living beings and eventually allow them to develop refined understanding.
It all started with the day the caterpillar came visiting …..
All the children of my Pre-Primary II were agog with excitement when they saw me bringing something to class. “Ma’am, what is it? Show me; show me…” excited, curious and eager, they swarmed around me.
I told them it was a caterpillar and after the initial excitement died down we found a safe spot to place it. Every few minutes you would see excited faces kneeling down and looking at it. We had several discussions on where caterpillars are found, what they eat, etc. Children became responsible and collected fresh curry leaves every morning and watched the caterpillar devouring them! The greatest interest and excitement was when they saw the droppings. “Ma’am it is doing potty “. In this process they understood that once the food is digested, the undigested food comes out as potty!
The young scientists watched the caterpillar become bigger and fatter day by day. One day it stopped eating leaves, became brownish and then curved its body like a ‘C ’just before it became a pupa!!!. They used to watch the pupa every day and ask me why it did not need leaves anymore. So many queries…so many doubts….
“When the caterpillar was small, how could it breathe? Does the pupa breathe?”
“Ma’am, will it become a butterfly now?”
“Ma’am, I wonder how the caterpillar which was soft, became a hard pupa!”
54
Their questions were endless…
One morning I was greeted with shrieks of delight when I entered my class!
“Ma’am, the butterfly has come out!!!” It was a BEAUTIFUL sight indeed to see the butterfly – the Common Crow, black with white spots.
“Ma’am, how did such a big butterfly come out from such a small pupa?”
We showed it proudly to all the children in the school and left it amidst the marigold flowers in the school garden!!!! Whenever we see a Common Crow flitting around the flowers the children ask me, “Ma’am, this is our butterfly, no?”
I was amazed to see the traits of learner profile developing in the children. They were curious, reflective and knowledgeable!!!
It fostered conceptual understanding and a sense of curiosity in understanding a complex topic like the “life cycle of a butterfly”. Unknowingly the children have developed vocabulary too and they were able to make up their own story which they named “Sweetie the beautiful butterfly.” This experience motivated and allowed me to rethink my planning and was instrumental to create a scientific inquiry corner in the class room. I started keeping artefacts like an empty nest, live earth worms, a millipede, the caterpillar of a moth, germinating seeds etc. Nature is the best teacher to create enthusiasm and develop observation skills in children.
This set a mood to our theme ‘Sharing the planet’ and to understand our Central Idea: ‘Caring helps plants and animals to be healthy’ and in turn to comprehend one of the lines of inquiry – ‘Growth of plants and animals’. It has also helped the children to develop a love for Nature, to become good observers and inquirers!!

The Legend of King Arthur
Once upon a time in a magical land, a boy named Arthur lived with his
grandfather in Dimsdale Valley. He liked dragons a lot. At the age of 18, he
thought he would become a dragon trainer! So, he set off to find a dragon.
After a lot of hard work and searching all the lands, he finally found a dragon!
He named it Victrius. He trained Victrius so much that he evolved into an icy
cold and very mighty dragon. Victrius and Richard became good friends along
the way, too! They both trained themselves for any scenario, and then set off
to the Valley of Dangers.
Before they could leave, however, they had to fight with the dragon Ellandus,
the mightiest dragon of all time! And, not to mention, there was his trainer
Dillandes, too! This was the battle of the opposites. Ellandus the dragon was
attacking with fire and Victrius’ breath was icy cold. They had a very big fight
and Victrius hit Ellandus out cold! Ellandus could not recover. Arthur and
Victrius had won the battle!
At the age of 22, Arthur set out for another long journey again, but this time
to the Valley of Dragons. He took Victrius with him. It was a very hard journey.
They finally reached after a long time. By now, they were very hungry. After
some searching, they found some golden apples! They were so tasty that
Arthur thought that he could take a lot home and sell those golden apples for a
good price. He took it back home and showed them to his grandfather. He sold
for a good price, and they all became very rich!
One day a couple of months later, the villagers saw that a stone sword was
embedded in the centre of Dimsdale Valley. The villagers shouted fearfully,
“Let’s call the mayor!” The mayor came and said, “There is a message written
on the sword. Whoever pulls this sword out will be the rightful king!!!” The
villagers shouted, “God has finally given us a sign!” The next day, the mayor
arranged a competition, and so the royal messenger spread the word around!
Everyone got excited as soon as they heard the news, and people started
boasting that they would become king. Many noble men tried, but all failed.
Pretty soon, Arthur tried! He held his right hand on the sword and yanked out
the sword with ease. Everybody in the village saw that, and bowed down to
56
their new king! Arthur lived with prosperity and led a happy life, and made
sure that the villagers in Dimsdale Valley were also happy with their new king!

Lonely Night
It was a lonely night. I was reading when my doorbell rang. I got up and looked
through the eyehole. There was no one. I went back to reading my book. I
heard footsteps approaching near me. I looked behind, but there was no one. I
was wondering whether I was alone or whether there was someone. I just
went to bed to sleep. Everything looked weird around me. My lamp was on the
other pillow and not on the table. My phone was on the fan and my blanket
flying! Not only this, I went into the bathroom and there was soap all over the
floor; the broom was moving by itself and cleaning off the floor by itself; and
all the taps were open and the water was flowing upwards!
It took me long time to rearrange everything. By the time I was done, it was 12
A.M.! The clock was saying DING-DONG, DING-DONG, DING-DONG. I tried to
sleep, but I couldn’t. I watched a movie instead. However, watching that made
me more scared. I went back to reading my book and I slowly fell asleep.
When I woke up, it realized it was nothing but…my dream!!! All of this was just
a dream! Woo-hoo! The best part was that now I was not alone! There were
my parents, my brother, and some cousins too! Later that day, we went out
and enjoyed with our cousins. It was a great day!

A Boy
Once upon a time, there was a boy. One day his teacher asked him to write
four sentences at home and bring them the next day. When he came back
from school, he saw his mother in the kitchen. He went to her. She was cutting
vegetables. She asked him “You want to have some food?’ He wrote ‘want to
have some food’ as one of the four sentences.
Then the boy went to his father. His father was watching cricket. Father said,
“What a shot?” He wrote ‘what a shot’ in his list. He went to his sister and she
said,” Okay, let’s meet now.” He wrote ‘let’s meet now’ in his list. Then he
went to the watchman. He was singing a song, ‘In the jungle, in the jungle.’
The boy wrote down ‘in the jungle’ in his list.
Next morning he went to school. The teacher asked his the first word. He said,”
Want to have some food!” The teacher got upset and slapped him. He said,
“What a shot!” The teacher got even more upset and said “Let’s meet the
Principal.” The boy said, “Let’s meet now.” The teacher took him to the
principle and asked her to send the boy home. The Principal asked the boy,
“Where is your home?” The boy replied, “In the jungle.”
Just then the teacher realized that this boy was not being naughty but actually
telling the four sentences. She told the Principal and then all of them had a
good laugh.

THE EVIL MAGICIAN AND THE MIGHTY PRINCE
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there was an evil magician filled
with hatred named Acrazino. There was a prince called Jason
Manizone whom, Acrozino had captured and trapped him in palace.
Acrazino was greedy and he wanted to loot the royal palace. There
was also a teacher named Ms. Harkness. One day Ms. Harkness was
going geocaching and told her students that she would be absent the
next day and that they would have a substitute. The children wailed
and said, “Please don't go, Ms. Harkness”.
The next day the teacher was very excited to go geocaching. The
kids were unhappy with a substitute. Acrazino got a wicked idea
when he saw Mrs. Harkness looking for the tap to fill her
waterbottle. He started saying, “Whoever needs water come here,
whoever needs water come here.” Once she went in the fort to fill
her bottle he trapped her. He entered in from the roof access. She
wondered what happened. Then she started to think she might never
get out. Then the magician gave an evil laugh. She said in a brave
voice but scared, “Who's there?”
Next the magician put a spell on her and she became evil. Then she
said in a robotic voice, “I am under your control.” The evil magician
told her to loot the palace because he didn't want to face the prince
and get in trouble. He was thinking about the prince's last laugh, but
at the same time he was scared, what if the prince escaped. By the
time he thought of all that Ms. Harkness reached the palace.
Acrazino was wondering how she reached so fast. She barged into
the palace and started fighting with the watchmen, but the prince
didn't notice. One soldier informed the prince and the prince also
60
started fighting and when she got defeated she was like, “where am
I?” The prince was puzzled. Then Ms. Harkness explained everything
to the prince. Meanwhile, Acrazino was enjoying his time. At the
palace the prince made arrangements and prepared to attack. He
screamed, “Guards, prepare to attack!” Then they all started
shooting arrows at his fort then his fort came down. Then Acrazino
ran for his life. And... When Ms. Harkness returned to school, the
children all made a surprise for her. I won't tell you but it's your
imagination.

The Torn Painting
Once there was a king who loved to spend his free time in painting.
Once he went on a hunting trip. After hunting for hours and hours he
got tired so he took his canvas, colours and paint brushes and went
up on a small hill. From there he saw a beautiful sight of sunset. He
started painting it. Soon he had completed the painting. He started
admiring his work from side to side. He moved a step to the right to
look at it and then a bit to the left. He stepped back to view his
work. He kept stepping back without realizing that he was nearing
the edge of a cliff.
On the hill slope a little shepherd boy was returning home with his
flock of sheep. As he was passing he saw that the king was stepping
61
back and realised he fall off the cliff anytime. He rushed up the hill
and tore off the beautiful painting which was obtructing his way.
Seeing this, the king ran to the painting to save it. He smacked the
boy on his cheek. “How dare you tear my beautiful painting?” The
king cried in anger.
“Sir, I did it to save your life. Turn around and see, if you had taken
a step back then you would have fallen to your death”
At this the king looked back and was shocked. Then he thanked the
young boy. He took him to the palace where he was taught by
teachers. When he grew up as a young man he was appointed as the
chief minister.

What did she see?
It was only midnight, when I awoke with a silent shiver. I was
confused at first but then longed to know what gave me that shiver.
All of a sudden, the moon twinkled and wolves howled. I looked
around only to find all the other trees asleep. Prickles ran up my bark
and goosebumps grew on my leaves. I could feel then fright down to
my roots! Then there was a cold breeze and along with it came a foul
smell.
62
I saw, by the edge of my eye, a dark figure walk by. It was covered in
white, had long blond hair and was surrounded by fog.
I quickly took a long blink followed by an extra-long breath and saw
nothing but trees, the moon and…and the FOG!! Where had all the
fog come from? I looked back in front of me and…I was awestruck!
The figure was standing there; right in front of me, so close that I
could feel its breath. It had a face…a face that would get anybody
paralyzed… but me. It looked more like a woman; with one eye that
was purple and the other…there was no eye! She had fiery red lips
and a long thin nose. Her ears were hidden by her hair and her face
was covered in stitches, scars and…something you wouldn’t want to
know about. She didn’t have a single tooth and her jaw was moved
to a side. Her appearance was probably worse then what you are
thinking.
She stood right there staring, staring into my eyes as though she saw
something…something else but a tree in me…

AN INTRODUCTION TO BLACK HOLES
Have you ever wondered what black
holes are? Or how they work?
This report will tell you all about it.
Black holes are ‘singularities’ (matter
packed so tightly that has almost no
volume or in a space as big as an atom
or less.) with intense fields of gravity
surrounding them anything that goes
near will be torn apart at first to such an extent that only THE BUILDING
BLOCKS OF ATOMS will be left near the singularity. After that nobody
knows.
Black holes are formed when a star collapses and the layers of hydrogen press
down into the space of an atom or less. This is when a black hole is formed.
When black holes suck in matter and gets it inside itself it adds to gravity. So
much matter compressed into a tiny space makes a humongous and intense
gravity field. Also more density (matter in a single space) adds to gravity
making the black hole 10 times stronger.
A black hole’s collapse is actually very complicated and is caused by its own
event horizon.
That’s all for this report and thanks for reading!

RAIN
I don’t have pain,
When I look at rain,
And I look at the green meadows
Which fills my heart with glee.
Rain does a lot of things,
And helps to grow seedlings.
Then I go out and shout-
YEAH! And get wet in the rain.
When it rains rainbows form,
And on it are leprechauns.
Carrying a pot of gold.
Across the rainbow,
High and low,
They lie down beneath an oak tree,
With a mountain of gold.

The Shoe in Ka – boo
In the land of Ka-boo
There lived an old shoe
Each and everything he do
Was unnoticed, while true.
A superhero realized
That that shoe was traumatized
And decided to cheer it up.
The shoe in Ka-boo
Nearly went to the loo
As he saw the strange sights
Of a hero in tights
Coming out of the sky
With a big birthday pie.
That shoe got cheered up
Ate all the pie up
Got warm and cosy
And was not at all nosy.
The next day it woke up
Gave itself a smoke up
Polished and bright
That shoe began to shine.

Yes for Yoga!
Yoga is an ancient practice which originated in India. Earlier people were used to
practicing yoga and meditating in their daily lives to line a healthy and strong life.
However, practice of yoga was declining day by day in such a crowded and hectic
environment.
The world Yoga day is a beautiful day to remind us of what we need to remember every
day. It reminds us of ‘UNITY IN REALITY.’ Yoga comes from the root word ‘yuj’ that
means union. Unfortunately, most relate yoga to only ‘asana’ and ‘posture’- we need to
learn to differentiate between the form and essence.
The asana needs to get into the body while most just use the body to get into
the asana. Just spending 5-20 mins a day will not cost you much…at least
DO IT FOR YOUR HEALTH!
Doing yoga- Just close your eyes and watch your breath
coming in and out. This alone will take you to levels;
higher and higher.
My job is done…the rest is up to you. Now it’s your job to follow this and
write the rest.

It was a rainy day for Amelia and Max. Some of their friends called Jake, Emily
and Kate came to their house to play with them. Two of their cousins called
Emily and Emma also came to play with them. They were playing cards in the
living room.
“I am bored,” said Kate “We have been playing cards for more
than two hours!”
“That’s true,” said Emma, thinking of some other game to
play . “If only we could play outside”.
“That would be fun,” said Amelia glumly.
Suddenly brightened up and said, “I have an idea! Let’s go to
my room. I have something to show you all.” So they went
up-stairs to Amelia’s room. Amelia went to her cupboard and
took out a box and they all sat on the ground as Amelia
opened the box.
“This,” said Amelia “This is what I got for my birthday. It has 50 games! So
choose between yourselves and play any game you want!”
So they each chose a game to play. There were all the games which they had
never played before. All of them together played a new game called Horse
Derby.
When they were playing they suddenly heard something.
“Amelia,” said Jake, “Is that your dog barking?”
“Croncer!” cried Max and Amelia together, “He is outside on this rainy day!
Why is he barking so loudly?”
“Let’s find out!” said Kate. So they all went to the window to see what was
happening.
Croncer was out on the road where the road was flooded and he
was trying to reach John.
72
Postman’s daughter Dotty was struggling in the water. And John was calling to
his daughter but he could not go to her as he himself was struggling in the
water in his van.
Amelia and the others went out of their house in their raincoats and stood
near the closed gate. “Croncer!” cried Amelia as the poor dog went under the
water. “He is going to drown!”
“Don’t worry,” said Emily “I am sure he can manage. He is trying to save Dotty.
Look! Dotty is going to drown! The water is so high! Just about three feet!”
“Croncer is going to drown too if Dotty is going to drown!” said Emma “He is
going to really drown if we don’t do anything about it”
“Croncer!” said Max “Come back!” but Croncer did not listen he went over to
Dotty who held onto him very tightly.
Croncer went over to her father’s van and Dotty climbed on to the seat right
next to her father. “Thank you, Croncer,” said Dotty shivering. “You saved me
from drowning.”
“Wuff! Wuff! wuff ! ” said Croncer, which meant you’re welcome.
Everyone cheered and Dotty got hold of Croncer and Croncer brought her to
Amelia’s house. John got down and walked to their house.
And they had a fun rainy day surprise sleepover. What a rainy day surprise!

There was something going on.
There was a fight between aliens and kings’

aliens were fighting with guns. When I was

Kings army was losing the war because aliens
can change their shapes. King brought the

Recycling
Recycling is the reprocessing of waste materials into new products
hence reducing valuable raw materials, wastage, energy and pollution.
Recycling has three basic processes:
1. Recycle
75
2. Reuse
3. Reduce
Some of the products that we recycle are plastic, glass, and paper,
metal and wood. Below are a few advantages of recycling:
1. Reduces pollution
2. Saves Earth and environment
3. Reduces energy consumption
4. Conserves natural resources
5. Reduces amount of waste to landfill
At home we segregate waste on recyclable and non-recyclable
materials. We reduce the use of plastic and paper. For example,
instead of a plastic spoon we use a steel spoon. In school minimize
waste and have a stationary policy to avoid wastage.

ALIEN INVASION
Sector 12 was a happy place with enough resources to keep it running
day and night. It was powered by a transformable cube which turned into
a life size surfboard. The cube was hidden in the principal’s backyard.
The aliens were looking for the cube too, so they could also keep their
planet running for a long time. They looked for it everywhere but they
could not find it. So, they decided to go to sector 12 to find the cube. They
packed their gear and started the investigation.
The people on sector 12 heard an alarm. They
saw a weird spaceship on the principal’s
backyard. The aliens started looking for the
cube but just then the principal appeared! He
was armed with a battle suit and guns but was
still in his shirt and pants- not in a superhero
suit. He took out his laser guns and shot the
alien’s space ship. He took the transformable
surfboard, started flying and shooting the
aliens. The leader alien had 2 heads, 8 arms and
6 legs. Even he took out his guns and started
shooting at the principal and the surf board but the principal managed to
escape.
He went to the other side of sector 12 . Feeling quite relieved he said,
“Now that I have destroyed their space ship, they cannot find me.” But
what principal said was not right. The aliens had escape pods which were
faster than principal’s surf board. Suddenly, the aliens appeared in front
of the principal with escape pods which were actually UFOs
(Unidentified Flying Objects).
The alien leader started shooting at the pricipal.
“UH–oh laser bullets! I must move!” said the principal.
Then the two aliens came out of the UFOs and held the principal's
surfboard to take it to their planet and investigate about it. The aliens
tried hard but instead they broke it. "gouble gunk goosy poosy!" -all the
effort we put in getting this surfboard is wasted!
And by the way that's the alien language, zouble zouble.
77
The aliens were sad and went back to their planet in their UFOs. Leader
alien said “na planeto zha parr bom bouchi" (now we don’t have enough
power for our planet). Principal was happy for stopping the fight and
said "Phew! At last those aliens left sector 12!"

The screw gets loose and hit the bunch of grapes
The grapes fall into the syrup, the syrup gets splashed to the wall.
The bug moves to drink the syrup and also makes noise
The dog thinks it is a bell and runs towards the door
The bat turns and hit the bug and the bug falls down
The fish wants to eat the bug and it jumps into the net

HARDEST BUILDING BLOCKS
1. Knowledgeable – We discover and wander through forests of ideas, trees of facts and shrubs of dense possibilities. We look at many different things whether around us or far away, it does not matter.
2. Reflective – we look back on our discoveries, our thoughts and ideas and we see how they have changed throughout the course of the subject. We always look ahead of the present, considering what we will do in the future.
3. Communicators – we share our knowledge with who we need to. We express and understand our own ideas as well as others. We make sure that the knowledge we have (and others) have, does not go to waste.
4. Balanced – we do not put play before work, but we do not do more work than play. We balance out the forces in our life, making sure that we get enough, not too little or too much, just enough of everything in our life.
5. Caring – we do not, not make friends as other people are all integral part of our own life. We show empathy to people when
79
they have a problem and comfort them while helping them find a solution.
6. Courageous – we are not scared to step outside our comfort zone, the firm foundations of our own knowledge. We do not fear finding we are wrong; neither do we be guilty. Because we maybe! We stand up for our beliefs if we think they are right and if they are proved wrong, we do not complain.
7. Inquirer – we do not shy away from new knowledge. Instead, we seek it out. We dream to know more things than we do right now. We explore new possibilities, find new facts, and do it all with enthusiasm.
8. Open mindedness – we accept other ideas freely, without enforcing our own over others. We know our responsibilities within our culture. We do not discriminate by race or gender.
9. Principled – we act with integrity and follow the rules. We do not break rules and do not lie. We are honest and don’t use unfair means to accomplish our ends.
10. Thinker – we apply the fullest of our extent to figure our problems ahead of us. We solve any problem that confronts us, creatively and without doubt. We always check to see whether our ideas are correct (unlike philosophers)

My Elder Brother (Story with Idioms)
My name is Anvit and I am in middle school. Whenever my
brother (Advait) comes over, I am a nervous wreck, I just
can’t do anything right! For this reason he calls me a
peabrain. I didn’t like that, so I HAD TO find and insult
for him too, but I am just so powerless against him! He
pretends to be nice to other people but he is so mean to
me, he is just a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
One time when we went to Auroville to visit the
Matrimandir, I was so excited! I ran to go to the
viewpoint, but my brother shouted, “Hold your horses
brother! We don’t know the way and we need to watch this
video first.” I was not interested in the video so I got
MY Rubik’s cube for playing, of course my brother
snatched it. I got annoyed, because he didn’t bring his
own. Then again he HAD TO spoil it more, so he said “Stop
making a mountain of a molehill! It’s just a cube. “I
mean what is his problem?!
Every time I take my cube out for playing, he keeps
giving me tips I DON’T want to know, but he likes putting
bugs in my ears. My brother loves playing with the cube
82
and the lubricant in it is like icing on the cake as it
allows him to move the cube really fast. God he annoys
me!!
Everyday I ask him why he calls me a peabrain, and he
says “ If you act dumb, of course I’ll call you a
peabrain! It’s in the bag, peabrain.”
Sometimes he is actually nice! I don’t know whether I
like him or hate him, I have mixed feeling about him.

Child labour
Child labour is employment of children in industires,
business, using them as domestic owrkers or in any other
jobs. It has been an aspect of international concern because
it damages the future of the children by adversely affecting
their health, persoanal development and also, depriving
them of basic right of education . The problem of child
labour is a serious matter not only in India but also in many
developing countries. It is serious social problem. Children
are the hope and future of a nation, yet there are millions
deprived children in our country and other countries who
have never known, and probably never will know, a normal
childhood.
83
Main CAUSES of child labour:
• To have or increase the income of a poor family
To reduce the labour cost in a production organization.
In a developed society where every citizen counts and all
citizens have to have proper education, health care
supports, games and entertainment and complete their
education so that when he is a fully grown adult he can get
a full employment with standard salary.
SOLUTIONS to child labour:
• All child labour laws need to be strictly enforced by
the Government
• The general public needs to be made aware of the
severe consequences of child labour.
• An increase in employment opportunities for adults
would help in overcoming the problem of poverty and
child labour.
• Governments should ensure that every child gets the
opportunity to go to school.
• The owners of factories and mines should take the
pledge of not engaging child labour in their place of
business.
84
Child labour is a global and social issue that needs to be
solved on urgent basis by the people as well as the
government. As a citizen of our country and the whole
world it is our duty that we spread the awareness of the
issue and motivate and support people to help in eradicate
the problem from the roots.

DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS: BE CAREFUL!!!
What is a digital footprint?
A digital footprint is basically a mark left by you on all the sites that you visit.
You can compare this to the footprints you leave when you go trekking to a
muddy place.
Digital footprints can range from your browser history, the things you “Like”
on FB, and basically almost everything you do on the Internet. Thinking
they’re all bad? Well, they have pro’s and con’s. Let’s see them.
The most common thing that happens is if you have multiple tabs, and one of
them is an e-retail site, an ad will come for a product similar to the one you
were looking at!
Also, companies can make detailed profiles of you from all of the online
activities you do, and by commercializing it, gain money! This can lead to
90
many consequences, like misguided assumptions about you! Also, this kind of
stuff has led to the rise of many tracking companies, who can gain loads and
loads of money from this business. Here is just an example of what can happen
to you if you are not careful: If you use a credit card to pay for a bunch of
drinks at a restaurant on behalf of a group of your friends and then use the
same credit card to pay for your parking ticket, the tracking company may
believe that you drink and drive. And if this information is bought by your
insurance company, you may lose your plan or have an increased premium.
And remember, while you are confused about why your insurance premium
was suddenly hiked, the tracking company has also gained money. Though
these kinds of incidents have happened many a times, I feel that the media
does not give enough importance to these crimes and the mistakes of
innocent people. There are a couple of ways you can prevent this from
happening to you. While they do have small disadvantages, they will protect
you (and in some cases, your money!)
❖ Use Private Browsing mode on and iPad or Mac
❖ Go Incognito on Chrome
❖ Try not to stay signed in on Google, Bing or any other browser.
While it will allow you to quickly check your mail, it can have disastrous
consequences!
❖ Try to keep as little tabs open as possible. Remember, this will
make sure that the tracking companies will have a much smaller chance
of creating a detailed profile of you!
❖ Avoid putting your pictures on the Internet. Again, all of this just
may go into your profile!
While these are just small things you can individually do, I suppose that you
should also spread the message, and bring this topic up in the government so
as to allow all Internet users the safety that should be a right.

Thinking about Thinking – Making Thinking Visible
Being IB educators, we all give prominence to the conceptual understanding as it
facilitates the students to think out of the box. As teachers we strive to teach our
students the skills, and strategies along with the knowledge, to mould them into
critical thinkers and active learners. It’s imperative that students are enabled with tools
that empower them to critically contemplate about what they are learning. If they
make connections with their learning, then the actual “Teaching for understanding”
happens.
During the theme “where we are in place and time” students were inquiring about the
migration across ages, wherein they have to investigate the impact of exploration and
technology. At the end, as a part of summative assessment they were required to
reflect on their learning. To this end, I have implemented the “6 thinking hats” strategy
to synthesize their learning and to promote their thinking in the right direction and also
it induces the students to think in different directions to get the ‘big idea’.
92
The Six Thinking Hats “thinking strategy” was developed by Edward de Bono (1987).
This popular strategy is deployed to promote parallel thinking and to help students
look at a problem or decision from many different perspectives. It is used in education
and a variety of industries and businesses for training and decision making.
My students have developed excellent skills in deploying this methodology of thinking
and used it extensively to assess their peer presentations without any biased
judgement.
Mihir and Soham have advocated that we club KWL strategy and six thinking hats
strategy to acquire a precise thinking of the topic. Soham has taken interest in
designing a template and shared it to me with much enthusiasm. I was amazed to see
their connections with what they have learnt and experienced. If they sustain such
thinking levels, I am sure that they would become lifelong learners.
To end this I would like to recall the words of Professor David Perkins - "Learning for
understanding requires not just taking in what you hear. It requires thinking in number
of ways what you heard”.

The best laid schemes of women and cats gang aft
agley...!!!
Sheba and Happy, as different as chalk from cheese. She, regal,
golden-eyed, distant; he of the odd-colored eyes, as plebian as they
come despite his pure-bred Persian blood. When first we got Sheba,
she was as nervous as a thoroughbred horse, she would slink into
the dustiest corners of the house, (for eg. under my son's bed) and
gaze at us with wide-eyed
suspicion. I suspect she was
maltreated at her former home
(she was 7 months old when
she arrived in an outsized,
dusty cardboard box chez
nous). Now half a year and 3
litter-boxes later, she snuggles
up to me and puts her paws
over my hand in a strangely flattering gesture of trust. Her eyes as
wide-eyed as ever, now show trust and even overt friendliness and
(dare I say it), affection!
Even my husband, with his so-called ''cat allergy'' syndrome unbent
enough to actually stroke her silky soft fur one day while sharing a
sofa and TV time with her! Happy cat is a dad now!!! Three
beautiful white kittens with squashed faces like their goofy papa.
He is curious about them, tries to sneak into my son's room where
the kittens are under his bed guarded over by Sheba. Yesterday I
introduced them to Happy one by one; he snuflled at each and
looked at me with his black rimmed odd-colored eyes as if to say
'Hmm, interesting!!' All the internet sites say not to let the male
alone with the kittens, but personally I don't think Happy could
hurt a fly despite his Iago-like aspect. In fact he eats nothing
except dry cat-food, even the Whiska's treats he 'treats' with
disdain and as for chicken liver ( that Sheba loves), it doesn't even
94
merit a passing glance. Once I tried him with lightly steamed fish,
he gave it a curious lick and backed away horrified. Hmph!
Mornings when I open my
bedroom door, there he is, sitting
just outside. The minute he sees
me, he jumps up with a heart-
rending ammiaoooow and rubs
against my legs with a curiously
arched spine. Then he runs on
ahead of me to the kitchen where
he knows I'm headed, and heads
for the balcony door, wanting to be let out.
The dipper of water I keep for him outside is 'stale', so he knocks it
over with a naughty paw!! Only fresh water for Happy. And heaven
forbid if we forget to clean the
litter box, all our mattresses still
bear faint odours of tomcat-spray
despite liberal applications of
baking powder, vinegar, and
carpet- deodorisers!! What a cat he
is!

My Pondy-Pondicherry holidays!
My holidays started on Christmas Eve. I was excited to go to Pondicherry but
I didn’t know everybody would have to wake up at 5:15 (though only my
mother and I actually woke up at that time); I would have to squeeze as we
were going by car and we would be there only for four days.
We left off at 7:00 am, and around 11:00 am we realized that we didn’t wish
each other a ‘Merry Christmas’!
We reached ‘St. James resort’ around 3:15 pm. My dad was happy as there was a
bar, a sea-view restaurant and a parking lot. We came to know that this is the
only resort in Pondicherry that was located at the beach.
In the room, once we settled, I started my Christmas hunt! I almost gave up
after five minutes of my search. Then I had this crazy idea that the present is
inside the pillow stuffing; so I checked every pillow and finally found my
gift! I un wrapped the gift and saw an “Artemis Fowl” book, which made me
wonder whether that gift was from the previous people that were staying in
our room. I noticed there was something wrong with the pages, so I opened
the book, and it was hollow! I had a speed cube in it! (Basically a Rubik’s cube
but much faster.) It was a 3X3 YJ Guan Long! Due to the “keyhole” method
(that my brother taught me) and the speed cube, I got faster by nearly 2
minutes (which is a lot to do just in four days).
The next day we visited the Matrimandir which was like a huge golden dome
used as a meditation spot.
Afterwards we ate at an Italian restaurant called “TANTO” which had fresh,
delicious, hand-made pizzas! Funny part about the restaurant was that is a
unit of the Matrimandir.
Earlier, I though four days was too less for any holiday but by the 2nd day, I
was already bored. I was happy when we reached home but it was four days
to go back to school………

dividendes importants.

French Idioms
French Idioms are fun and so useful to express a whole concept in a short sentence - here
are several common ones, using hens, a bear and a Spanish cow among others!
1 - Quand Les Poules Auront Des Dents
Literal meaning: When hens have teeth. means there’s not a chance of this ever
happening. The English idiom:“when pigs fly”. Pigs, hens... it’s all in the barnyard!
Moi, sortir avec Paula ? Quand les poules auront des dents !!
Me, going out with Paula? When pigs fly!
2 - Parler Français Comme Une Vache Espagnole
Literally, this means to speak French like a Spanish cow. Well, a cow doesn’t speak French
to start with, so imagine a Spanish one!
This means to speak French very poorly.
In older
French, both vache and espagnol were
negative terms. So combine both, and it makes
quite an insult.
Nowadays, it’s not that bad, but don’t use
it lightly.
Ça fait 5 ans que Peter apprend le français,
mais il parle comme une vache espagnole :
son accent est si fort qu’on ne comprend
pas un mot de ce qu’il dit.
Peter has been learning French for five
years, but he speaks terrible French: his
accent is so strong that you cannot
understand a word he says.

3. Faire l’andouille
Literal translation : to make the sausage.
Meaning : to do something ridiculous.
“Une andouille” is a smoked sausage made of pork and
that’s also how you call a person who does something
ridiculous in French.
How to use “faire l’andouille ?”
Il n’arrête pas de faire l’andouille He doesn’t stop
acting the fool.
4. Chercher la petite bête
Literal translation : to look for the little beast.
Meaning : to always look for something to complain about/ splitting hairs.
We all know someone who always finds something
to complain about and pays attention to the most
insignificant details. In French we say that this person
“cherche la petite bête”.
How to use the French expression “chercher la petite bête” ?
Il cherche toujours la petite bête, c’est énervant.
He is always splitting hairs, it’s irritating.
5. Donner un coup de main
Literal translation : to give a knock of hand.
Meaning : to give a helping hand.
And very similar to English at the end.
How to use the French expression “donner un
coup de main”?
Peux-tu me donner un coup de main s’il te plaît ?
Can you help me out please?
