Viel Spass beim Lesen, herzlichst Ihr

DearReaders,This issue of plugin places a special focus on renewable sources of energy. In the past
two decades, no other field of industry has developed faster and more dramatically than
this one.
At the beginning of the 1990s hardly anybody believed that there would be a demand
for pluggable photovoltaic cabling or, indeed, that solar energy had a future at all.
But history has often proved us wrong. We need think only of the famous prophesy
made by Gottlieb Daimler in 1901: ”The demand for motor vehicles will not exceed
1 million ... simply because of the shortage of available drivers!”
With regard to solar energy, Multi-Contact once again showed a far-sighted, pioneering
spirit. It was at the forefront of this new technology from the very beginning, and made
a lasting impact with the development of the world’s first photovoltaic plug connector.
The first firm order came from Switzerland; inquiries for larger quantities were later
received mainly from Japan. In this issue you can read about the evolution of the
PV plug connector, the ever greater demands it must meet, and the technological
responses to new kinds of challenges.
Of course it is not only plug connectors that are affected by evolving requirements of a
technological and economic nature. Here we present our new smart junction box
”MultiSunLink”, whose modular system guarantees a high degree of flexibility for
the user, and a smart version of our Westlake junction box whose electronics ensure
greater safety in the operation of the system.
Be it on the first solar module roof on a regional train of the French railway company
SNCF, in the ”Formula Student Electric” contest in which electric sports cars compete
against the internal combustion engine, or in the wiring of the solar power system for
our new buildings such as that of MC USA – Multi-Contact supports the further devel-
opment of renewable energies with conviction and inventiveness and in accordance
with the principle of safety for people and the environment.
In order to maintain its position as a leader in technology, innovation and quality in the
future, Multi-Contact invests in young talent, training and further education. We are
proud of the excellent achievements of our students and trainees, and starting in 2012,
we intend to further increase the number of apprenticeships offered.
Nothing is as constant as change!
I wish you an enjoyable read.
Yours sincerely
Franco Delvecchio

GreenTechnologyforaGreenCommunity Multi‑Contact USA celebrates new home in Windsor, California with official ribbon‑cutting ceremony and a public open house event.
In February 2011, Multi-Contact USA
moved in to its new greater quarters in
the Town of Windsor. Due to MC’s rap-
idly expanding manufacturing capabili-
ties in North America and the significant
increase in their workforce over the
years, the move to this 42,000-square
foot facility was the right choice. To cel-
ebrate this milestone, MC-USA hosted a
private ribbon-cutting ceremony in April
that included Multi-Contact’s senior
management as well as members from
the Stäubli Group management and
board of directors.
The Town of Windsor Community,
friends, and family were also involved
in Multi-Contact USA’s inauguration of
their new building with a ribbon-cutting
event and open house on July 20th.
Over 120 participated in informative
guided tours through the building that
showcased MC-USA’s processes and
products. Live demos of MC products
from all product lines were shown. A
special highlight of the tour involved a
visit to the second floor of the building
allowing the public to see first-hand the
solar roof installation and learn more
about PV technology. MC-USA’s 860
panels are using over 2,000 of MC4
connectors and are producing up to
209 kilowatts of energy during peak
times.

Since 2010, a regional express with
solar panels on the roof, operated by
the SNCF, is running in the region of
Poitou-Charentes in western France.
The electricity produced is not enough
to actually power the engine, but it
allows an independent supply of the
lighting and air conditioning in the wag-
ons. A reliable connection of the roof
panels is ensured by MC3 photovoltaic
connectors. The application places
special demands on the connection, as
it is exposed to all weathers as well as
vibration due to the movement of the
train. The constant contact force of the
MC Multilam provides a smooth power
transmission even under these difficult
conditions. The pilot project is currently
in a three-year-test-phase. During this
time, the SNCF plans to further develop
the concept and investigate new areas
of application.

On time for Intersolar Europe, in June
2011 Multi-Contact presented its new
single-volume Solarline catalogue. This
contains all products of the plug con-
nector series MC3 and MC4, junction
boxes and solar cables which were
previously split between two separate
catalogues.
In addition, the new Solarline catalogue
is for the first time being published
in two languages (national language
plus English) instead of the previous
three. Printed versions in German,
French, Spanish and Italian are already
available, and other languages are in
preparation.
The new layout is considerably clearer
and makes the catalogue simpler to
use.
The catalogues of the other product

Bei Photovoltaikanlagen zählt schon
lange nicht mehr allein der ökologische
Gedanke – wirtschaftliche Aspekte
rücken zunehmend in den Vorder-
grund. Ehemals Nischenmarkt für
ambitionierte Umweltaktivisten, hat
sich die Photovoltaik inzwischen welt-
weit zu einem lukrativen Industriezweig
entwickelt. Entsprechend steigen die
Anforderungen der Betreiber an die An-
lagen, allem voran in Punkto Sicherheit
und Effizienz. Intelligente Anschluss-
dosen, sog. Smart Boxes, können hier
einen wesentlichen Beitrag leisten.
Ihre Funktionen gehen weit über den
blossen elektrischen Anschluss des
Moduls an die Anlage hinaus – von
Sicherheitsüberwachung und Dieb-
stahlschutz über Lichtbogen erkennung
und Systemabschaltung im Notfall bis
hin zu Leistungskontrolle und -optimie-
rung.
Modular,flexibelundintelligent
Das neue, modulare Anschlussdosen-
system , das Multi-Contact

dene Optionen zur Auswahl und ist
einfach zu handhaben. Es besteht aus
einem Basismodul, welches als uni-
verselle Schnittstelle standardmässig
auf dem PV-Panel montiert wird, und
diversen Zusatzmodulen mit unter-
schiedlichen Elektronikkomponenten.
Der Vorteil für den Modulhersteller liegt
auf der Hand: Er kann seine Solar-
module einheitlich mit dem Basismo-
dul ausrüsten und dennoch diverse
Funktionalitäts optionen anbieten. Der
Anlagenbetreiber seinerseits hat die
Möglichkeit, die für die spezifischen
Anforderungen seiner Installation
geeignete Lösung zu wählen. Zudem
unterschiedlichen Elektronikkomponen-

wie Leistungsoptimierung/MPP Tracking
bieten oder als Modulwechselrichter
dienen. Auf der Intersolar Europe 2011

In photovoltaic systems ecology has
long ceased to be the sole considera-
tion, and increasing attention is given
to economic aspects. Formerly a niche
market for ambitious environmental
activists, solar electric power has now
developed into a profitable industry all
over the world. Users are therefore grow-
ing ever more exacting in their demands,
particularly where safety and efficiency
are concerned. Smart junction boxes can
contribute a great deal in this respect.
Their functions include much more than
just the connection of the module, and
range from safety monitoring and theft
protection to the detection of arcing,
emergency shutdown and the monitor-
ing and optimisation of performance.
Modular,flexibleandintelligent
The new, modular junction box system , which Multi-Contact is
marketing on a joint basis with Shoals,
offers users a variety of options and is
simple to handle. It consists of a basic
unit which is mounted on the PV mod-
ule as a standard, universal interface,
and various accessory modules with
different electronic components. This
brings a clear advantage for the module
makers. They can equip their solar pan-
els uniformly with the basic module and
nevertheless offer different functional
options. The users of the panel can
choose the alternative that is best suit-
ed to the specific requirements of their
installation. What is more, the system
is flexible: Depending on requirements,
the additional modules can later be
changed or retrofitted on the spot. The
simplest version of the box
performs the function of a conventional
junction box with no extra power elec-
tronics. In addition, four other modules
are available which are equipped with
different electronic components and
offer functions such as performance
optimisation/MPP tracking or serve as
module inverters. The project was first
presented to the public at Intersolar Eu-
rope 2011 in Munich, where it met with
an enthusiastic reception. Above all, the
flexibility of the new solution was well
received by module manufacturers,
operators and installers of photovoltaic
systems.

divers modules additionnels contenant

DieEvolutiondesPVSteckverbinders
Die ersten Steckverbinder für Pho-
tovoltaik (PV) waren vorwiegend auf
Funktionalität ausgelegt. Heute erfüllen
sie vielfältige anwendungsspezifische
Anforderungen.
VomStossverbinderzum
Steckverbinder
Die Bedürfnisse der PV-Industrie waren so
speziell, dass ein Standard-Industriesteck-
verbinder nicht eingesetzt werden konnte.
Wind, Sonne und Regen sowie die expo-
nierte Position von Photovoltaikanlagen
mit extremen Temperaturschwankungen
setzten die Eignung für raue Umgebung
voraus. Der Steckverbinder sollte wasser-
dicht, temperatur-, uv- und ozonbeständig
sein, ausserdem berührungsgeschützt bei
hoher Stromtragfähigkeit und effizient mit
ausserordentlich niedrigem Übergangs-
widerstand und dies bei einer Anlagen-
lebensdauer von mindestens 20 Jahren.
Mit diesen Vorgaben entwickelte
Multi-Contact (MC) 1996 den ersten
Photovoltaik-Steckverbinder, den MC3,
als kundenspezifische Lösung. Der MC3
mit Kontaktlamelle setzte sich im damals
noch überschaubaren Markt durch und
definierte im Rekordtempo den Standard
für PV-Steckverbinder.

Wirkungsgrad
Gefördert durch politische Rahmenbedin-
gungen nahmen die Zahl der installierten
Anlagen und die Anlagengrösse stetig zu.
Neben kleinen gebäude integrierten Ins-
tallationen und Aufdachanlagen wurden
europaweit netzferne und Freilandanlagen
errichtet. Die Modultechnik entwickel-
te sich weiter und die Module wurden
immer leistungsfähiger. Der Nischenmarkt
Photovoltaik wurde zum Massenmarkt.
Basierend auf den Erfahrungen der
Anfangsjahre und der Ausweitung der
Einsatzbereiche entstanden neue Anfor-
derungen und normative Änderungen.
Heute zählt bei einer Solaranlage nicht
nur der ökologische Aspekt, sie soll
sich amortisieren und Gewinn bringen.
Gerade bei Grossanlagen kann der
wirtschaftliche Druck enorm sein, aber
auch der Kleinanleger möchte den Ertrag
maximieren. Der Wirkungsgrad von PV-
Anlagen hängt nicht nur von den einge-
setzten Modulen ab, sondern auch von
der Leistungsfähigkeit der Komponenten
wie Wechselrichter oder Steckverbinder
sowie von der fachgerechten Installation.
DiezweiteGeneration
Mit der Anlagengrösse erhöhen sich die
Anschlussquerschnitte, die erforderliche
Stromtragfähigkeit steigt. Die Internati-
onalisierung des PV-Marktes erfordert
eine Anpassung an weltweite Vorgaben.
Gerade Sicherheitsaspekte treten immer
mehr in den Vordergrund. Werden
PV-Steckverbinder unter Last getrennt,
kann ein lebens gefährlicher Lichtbogen
entstehen. Daher erhalten heute nur
noch Steckverbinder mit Verriegelung
und genormter Auszugskraft der Kabel
eine TÜV-Zulassung. Steckverbinder für
den US-Markt dürfen gemäss NEC 2011
sogar nur mit Spezialwerkzeug entriegel-
bar sein.
Die PV-Steckverbinder der zweiten Gene-
ration, wie der MC4, den Multi-Contact
2002 auf den Markt brachte, erfüllen
diese Kriterien und sind verpolungssi-
cher. Durch das hörbare Einrasten des
integrierten Verriegelungssystems erhält
der Installateur eine akustische Rückmel-
dung, die gerade bei schwierigen Einbau-
situationen wichtig für die korrekte Mon-
tage ist. Wie bereits der MC3 definierte
auch der MC4 einen neuen Standard für
PV-Steckverbinder.

AshorthistoryofthePVconnector
While the first connectors for PV instal-
lations were primarily designed for
functionality, today they meet various
application-specific requirements.
Fromsplicetoplugconnectors
The specific demands of the PV indus-
try did not allow the use of standard
industrial connectors. Exposed to
wind, sun and rain as well as often
extreme temperature variations, the
connectors have to be suitable for
harsh environments. They should not
only be watertight and resistant to
temperature, UV and ozone, but also
touch-protected, with high current
carrying capacity as well as efficient,
with low contact resistance – all this
throughout the entire lifecycle of the
installation, at least 20 years.
Based on these requirements,
Multi-Contact developed the MC3, one
of the world’s first PV connectors, in
1996. The connector with MC Multilam
became widely accepted by the rapidly
evolving market, defining the interna-
tional standard for PV connectors.
Efficiencyisthekey
inagrowingmarket
Political conditions stimulated the
growth of both number and size of
installed photovoltaic systems. In addi-
tion to small, building-integrated instal-
lations and rooftop arrays, off-grid and
rural installations were set up through-
out Europe. Module technology was
continuously refined, increasing the
performance of the modules.
Photovoltaics went from a niche to
a mass market. Experience gained
in the early years and the expand-
ing range of applications lead to new
requirements and regulatory changes.
Today, eco-friendliness alone is insuf-
ficient reason for investing in PVin-
stallations – they are expected to be
financially viable as well. In fact, the
economic pressure can be tremen-
dous, in particular with large installa-
tions but small investors also want to
maximize their return.
The efficiency of a photovoltaic installa-
tion not only depends on the modules
used, but on the overall performance of
components such as inverters, cables
and connectors as well as on profes-
sional handling.
Safetyaspectsbecomemore
important
As photovoltaics gained importance,
the industry was facing new demands.
With large-scale installations, cable
cross sections increase as well as the
required ampacity.
At the same time, the globalization of
the PV market asks for international
standards. Safety aspects in particular
have come into focus over the past few
years. After all, disconnection under
load may cause fatal electric arcs.
Therefore, only lockable connectors
with standardized retention force may
currently obtain TÜV approval. Accord-
ing to the National Electric Code (NEC)
2011, connectors for the North Ameri-
can market even require a special tool
for disconnection.
Second-generation PV connectors
such as the MC4, which Multi-Contact
introduced to the market in 2002, meet
these requirements and are protected
against polarity reversal. The installer is
given acoustic feedback by the inte-
grated locking system. This is particu-
larly important for correct installation
under difficult conditions. Just like the
MC3 did before, the MC4 quickly set
a new standard for PV connectors.
Many manufacturers started copying
the MC4’s mating face; however, these
third-party connectors are not com-
patible with the MC4 system despite
their similar design. Thanks to the MC
Multilam Technology, the MC3 and
MC4 connectors ensure efficient power
transmission. Low contact resistance

In the early 1990s, photovol‑taic cables were connected using screw terminals or splice connectors. With the increasing number of in‑stalled systems, the need arose for a fast, safe, and easy connection solution – a plug connector.

L’évolutionduconnecteurPV
Les premiers connecteurs embro-
chables pour le photovoltaïque (PV)
étaient principalement conçus pour la
fonctionnalité. Aujourd’hui, ils répon-
dent à une grande variété d’exigences
spécifiques.
Duconnecteurboutàbout
auconnecteurembrochable
rendement.
Le rendement des installations PV ne
dépend pas seulement des modules
utilisés, mais aussi des performances
des composants comme les onduleurs
ou les connecteurs.
Ladeuxièmegénération
Avec la taille des installations, les
sections de raccordement et l’intensité
admissible nécessaire augmentent.
L’internationalisation du marché du
photovoltaïque exige une adaptation à
des prescriptions au niveau mondial.
Les aspects de sécurité passent de
plus en plus au premier plan. Un arc
électrique mortel peut se produire en
cas de débranchement de connecteurs
PV sous charge. De ce fait, seuls des
connecteurs avec verrouillage et force
de débrochage normalisée obtiennent
encore aujourd’hui une homologation
TÜV. Les connecteurs pour le marché
US doivent même, selon la norme
NEC 2011, être déverrouillables seule-
ment avec un outil spécial.
Les connecteurs PV de deuxième
génération comme le MC4, que
Multi-Contact a mis sur le marché en
2002, satisfont à ces critères et sont
protégés contre l’inversion de polarité.
L’enclenchement audible du système
de verrouillage intégré donne à l’ins-
tallateur une confirmation acoustique
qui est importante pour un montage
correct, notamment dans les situa-
tions de montage difficiles. Comme
le MC3 en son temps, le MC4 a défini
une nouvelle norme pour les connec-
teurs PV.

Preisdruck. Das hohe Sicherheits- und
Qualitätsbedürfnis besteht jedoch wei-
terhin. Es wird vermehrt nach Einsparpo-
tentialen gesucht, die nicht zu Lasten der
Qualität gehen. Hier gibt es zahlreiche
Ansätze entlang der Produktionskette,
angefangen vom Rohstoff bis hin zur
Montage der Anlage.
Bei der Herstellung der Module wird
verstärkt auf automatisierte Produktion
gesetzt. Dies reduziert die Kosten und
sorgt für erhöhte Prozesssicherheit. Die
Kontakttechnik unterstützt hier mit auto-
matisierbaren Komponenten wie Panel-
dosen. Aber auch bei der Produktion der
Komponenten selbst wird angesetzt. Der
neue PV-Steckverbinder MC4PLUS wird
automatisch konfektioniert, um speziell
für Modulhersteller einen kosteneffizien-
ten Steckverbinder mit gleichbleibend
hohem Qualitätsstandard anzubieten.
Ein anwendungsspezifisches Design fin-
det sich auch im Bereich der Installation.
Werkzeuglos konfektionierbare Steckver-
binder wie der MC4QUICK lassen sich
schnell und einfach an den Wechselrich-
ter anschliessen oder an Verlängerungs-
leitungen einsetzen.
Auch industriell vorkonfektionierte
Stringleitungen, die mit definierten
Abzweigen speziell für eine PV-Anlage
gefertigt werden, beschleunigen die
Installation enorm. Besonders bei
Grossanlagen kann hiermit sehr effektiv
produziert und installiert werden.

Viele Hersteller bieten heute komplette
Verbindungslösungen mit Paneldosen,
Steckverbindern und Solarleitungen an.
Mit weiter wachsenden Photovoltaik-
Märkten sowie steigendem Kostendruck
und erhöhten Sicherheitsanforderungen
werden in den kommenden Jahren stark
differenzierte Lösungen zunehmen.
Die Anlagen werden speziell für ihren
Einsatzort optimiert sein. Schätzungen
gehen davon aus, dass circa 20 – 30%
der Neuinstallationen mit modulintegrier-

efficiency. Due to the constant high
contact force, these connectors are reli-
able and long-lasting.
In contrast, lower-quality connectors
with high contact resistance can heat
up considerably, increasing the risk of
smouldering fires and premature dete-
rioration of the material.
Therightbalancebetweenprice
andquality
As a consequence of the dynamic
market development, the number of
providers, and thus the price pressure,
has been increasing. However, the high
demand placed on quality and safety
remains unchanged. Accordingly, the
industry requires solutions which allow
lower costs without affecting the qual-
ity. In order to fulfil this task, numerous
approaches have been developed along
the entire production chain – from the
raw materials to the installation of the
facility.
For instance, the automated produc-
tion of solar panels helps reduce
manufacturing costs while increasing
process reliability. Component manu-
facturers support this development by
providing automatable components,
e.g. junction boxes. Another attempt
is the production of the components
themselves. Multi-Contact, for ex-
ample, has started the automated as-
sembly of MC4 connectors, providing
a cost-effective solution particularly for
module manufacturers, while main-
taining the high quality standard of the
product.
Application-specific designs may also
help accelerate the on-site installa-
tion process. Connectors for tool-free
assembly such as the MC4QUICK
can quickly and easily be connected
to the inverter or to extension cables.
Pre-assembled branch cable leads
with defined branches, specifically
designed for a certain PV installation,
simplify the process as well. All this
makes production and installation
more efficient, particularly in large
installations.
Thetrendcontinues
Today many manufacturers offer
complete connection solutions with
connectors, junction boxes and solar
cables. Considering the continued
growth of the PV market, the increasing
price pressure as well as safety require-
ments, the coming years are likely to
see increasingly diversified solutions.
Installations will be optimized for their
specific operating location. It is estimat-
ed that approximately 20 – 30% of new
installations could be equipped with
module-integrated electronics. In addi-
tion to safety features such as system
shutdown in case of failure, possible
functions include MPP tracking for
optimized energy output as well as sys-
tem monitoring. The great potential of
building.integrated photovoltaics points
towards another innovation boost. All
these projects will require efficient, safe
and reliable electrical contacts.

l’installation.
La fabrication des modules est de plus
en plus automatisée. Cela réduit les
coûts et augmente la sécurité du pro-
cessus. Dans la technique de contact,
des composants automatisables,
comme les boîtiers de jonction, y
contribuent beaucoup.
l’installation (monitoring). Les multiples
possibilités du photovoltaïque intégré
au bâtiment promettent une nouvelle

de contacts efficaces et sûrs pour la

Erneuerbare Energien
TheMC4withaPlusThe ever greater power of solar modules means that their connectors must be adapted accordingly. The MC4PLUS meets this trend with an increased rated voltage of 1500V DC.
The MC4PLUS, which is available only
pre-assembled, incorporates the tried
and tested MC Multilam, crimp and
strain relief technology of the MC plug
connectors and is compatible for mating
with the original MC4. It is both TÜV and
UL-certified. The higher rated voltage of
1500V DC, which has been confirmed
by TÜV, enables the MC4PLUS to handle
substantially higher power levels than
other PV plug connectors on the market,
today.
The present UL certification is for
600V DC; certification for 1000V DC
is pending. The innovative, integrated
sealing system of the MC4PLUS
guarantees high protection categories of
IP65 and IP67.
Its flat design facilitates its installation
in confined spaces such as underfloor
and facade constructions. The secure
snap-in locking system in accordance
with NEC 2011 guarantees an
extremely secure contact and can be
released only with a special tool. By
its clearly audible engagement the
MC4PLUS assures the installer of a
perfect plug connection with long-term
stability, even in locations with poor
visibility such as under roof tiles or
tarpaulins.
TÜVcertificationfor
WestlakejunctionboxMulti‑Contact`s Westlake junction box (PV‑JB/WL‑H) is now TÜV certified in the 10A and 12A version, and conforms to protection category IP65.
The flat design of the box enables
it to be installed directly under the
module frame structure. This saves
valuable time in the installation process,
since it eliminates the need to bend
over the ribbon conductors.
Connection is effected by welding, or,
optionally, by clips. The junction box
is fixed to the panel using silicone.
Extra protection for the cable sleeves
is provided by the projecting lid
construction, which prevents kinking of
the cables at the sleeve outlet.

Le verrouillage « snap-in »
selon NEC 2011 garantit une sécurité
de raccordement maximale et ne
peut être déverrouillé qu’avec une clé
spéciale. Un enclenchement nettement
audible confirme à l’installateur que le
MC4PLUS est embroché de manière
parfaite et stable dans le temps, même
dans les environnements d’installation
difficilement accessibles comme sous
des tuiles ou des bâches.

Alternative power technologies for all
kinds of vehicles are on the advance:
fuel cells, gas or rapeseed oil, hybrid,
electric or solar power – there are many
different approaches to the problem.
In the case of electric power, the main
challenge is that of range: The further
a vehicle can travel on one charge,
the bigger and heavier its battery. The
weight of the vehicle itself also has to
be kept as low as possible. The solution
is sought in lightweight bodywork and
compact, high-performance batteries.
Another question is where the energy
for the environment-friendly propulsion
system is to come from. Ideally, this
electric power will also be produced
in a sustainable manner, i.e. by solar
installations that either supply external
charging stations or feed power directly
to the vehicle. Many project groups
at universities all over the world are
seeking solutions to these questions
and experimenting with new concepts
which are then tested in practice in
special races. The young researchers
obtain support from companies that
are developing solutions for this
market. This is a mutually beneficial
arrangement: The universities obtain
urgently needed material, while the
companies can test their products in
practical use. MC plug connectors
sometimes also take part in the race –
in Switzerland and in Turkey, for
instance:
In 2011 the SOCRAT team of the Uni-
versity of Istanbul won the national
TÜBITAK Formula G in Izmir for what
was already the third time in succes-
sion.
The solar car with a weight of only
183kg, whose surface consists of
monocrystalline solar modules, is
equipped with PV plug connectors and
cables from Multi-Contact.
The TÜBITAK Formula-G has been held
since 2005 in the solar- and hydrogen-
powered categories. It provides stu-
dents with an opportunity to put their
theoretical technical knowledge into
practice and to work as a team.
In the case of SOCRAT they did so with
complete success: with a top speed
of 120km/h the team has repeatedly
finished ahead of its competitors.

Les techniques de propulsion alter-
natives pour véhicules de tous types
avancent : pile à combustible, gaz ou
huile de colza, propulsion hybride,
voiture électrique ou solaire – les
stratégies sont multiples. Dans le cas
de la propulsion électrique, l’autonomie
constitue un défi majeur : plus l’auto-
nomie est grande, plus la batterie est
grande et lourde. Le poids du véhicule
doit aussi être le plus faible possible.
Des carrosseries en matériaux légers
et des accumulateurs compacts et
performants peuvent ici apporter la
solution. Se pose par ailleurs la ques-
tion de l’origine de l’énergie nécessaire
pour la propulsion écologique. Dans
l’idéal, ce courant est également pro-
duit de manière durable, par exemple
au moyen d’installations solaires qui
alimentent soit des stations de charge
externes, soit directement le véhicule.
De nombreux groupes de projets dans
les universités du monde entier se
consacrent à ces problématiques et ex-
périmentent de nouveaux concepts qui
doivent ensuite faire leurs preuves dans
la pratique lors de courses spéciales.
Les jeunes chercheurs sont soutenus
par des entreprises qui mettent au point
des solutions pour ce marché. Cela

auswirken.“
Auch in diesem Jahr können wir
wieder Mitarbeiter für besonders gute
Leistungen auszeichnen:
Herr Philipp Frossard (Einkauf) schloss
im Frühjahr 2011 die Berufsprüfung
zum Einkaufsfachmann mit eidgenös-
sischem Fachausweis erfolgreich ab.
Herr Robert Hüfler, Support Global
Supply Chain, erhielt eine Auszeich-
nung des Vereins Deutscher Ingenieu-
re VDI in Anerkennung seines her-
vorragenden Studienabschlusses im
Studiengang Logistik der Technischen
Hochschule Wildau (FH).
Wir beglückwünschen beide Mit-
arbeiter zu ihrem Erfolg!

In der Werkstatt der Multi-Contact AG
in Allschwil konnte im August 2011
Herr Michel Lehmann seine vier jährige
Ausbildung zum Polymechaniker mit
der Gesamtnote 5.2 gut abschliessen.
Für die praktische Prüfung (IPA) muss-
te der Auszubildende eigenständig ein
PV Zugtestwerkzeug planen, fertigen
und in Betrieb nehmen, den Prozess
dokumentieren und der Prüfungskom-
mission vorstellen. Nun plant er, die
Berufsmaturität zu erlangen und eine
Ausbildung zum Flugzeugmechani-
ker zu absolvieren. Wir gratulieren
Herrn Lehmann zum erfolgreichen
Abschluss und wünschen ihm für die
Zukunft alles Gute!

Ruth Wunderlin (Leiterin Personalwesen, links), und Stefan Liedtke (rechts) gratulierten Philipp Frossard und Robert Hüfler (Mitte) zu Ihren Erfolgen.
TrainingandstaffdevelopmentatMCAllschwil Multi‑Contact attaches great importance to apprentice training and staff development. The company also has a tradition of offering internships. Particularly in view of the shortage of skilled personnel in the labour market, we are committed to the training of future specialists.
The constant changes in the working
world place heavy demands on staff,
as was confirmed by Stefan Liedtke,
member of the MC management
board and head of production and
logistics.
”Today more than ever we both pro-
mote and challenge our employees’
overall understanding of the relation-
ships in a functioning supply chain.
The areas on which we focus, in
addition to pure sourcing issues, are
the interaction of logistics, inventory
times and cost structures which im-
pact directly upon the success of the
company.”
This year we were again able to com-
mend a number of employees for their
achievements:
Mr. Philipp Frossard (purchasing)
passed the Swiss state examination
as a certified purchasing expert in the
spring of 2011.
Mr. Robert Hüfler, Global Supply
Chain, received an award from the
Association of German Engineers VDI
in recognition of his outstanding final
examination results in the logistics
course of the Technical University of
Wildau. We congratulate both employ-
ees on their success.

In the workshop of Multi-Contact
AG in Allschwil, in August 2011
Mr. Michel Lehmann completed his
four-year training as a polymechanic,
passing the final examination with an
overall mark of 5.2 out of a possible
6 points. For the practical examina-
tion the trainee had to independently
plan, build and bring into operation
a PV tensile test tool, document the
process and present it to the board of
examiners. He now plans to study for
a professional baccalaureate and train
as an aircraft mechanic. We congratu-
late Mr. Lehmann on his good result
and wish him every success in the
future.

Ruth Wunderlin (Head of HR, left) and Stefan Liedtke (right) congratulated Philipp Frossard and Robert Hüfler (centre) on their success.
Logistique. « Nous exigeons et encou-
rageons aujourd’hui plus que jamais la
compréhension par nos collaborateurs
de tous les tenants et aboutissants
d’une supply chain qui fonctionne bien.
Les points principaux, outre les purs
problèmes d’approvisionnement, sont
les interactions entre logistique, cou-
verture des stocks et structures de coût
qui ont des répercussions directes sur
le succès de l’entreprise. »
Cette année encore, nous pouvons
distinguer des collaborateurs pour
leurs résultats particulièrement
brillants :
Monsieur Philipp Frossard (achats) a

Teambuilding-Veranstaltungen sollen
das Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl der
Mitarbeiter in Unternehmen stärken
und die Kommunikation fördern. Ob
Hochseilgarten, Drachenboot oder
Schnitzeljagd, die Teilnehmenden
agieren immer in Teams, wobei jeder
Einzelne seine individuellen Fähigkeiten
einbringt, um das gemeinsame Ziel zu
erreichen.
Unter dem Motto „gemeinschaftlich
stark“ konnten die Auszubildenden der
Multi-Contact Essen an einem solchen
Event teilnehmen. Beim Geocaching –
einer Art moderner Schnitzeljagd mit
GPS Empfängern – waren sie in zwei
5er Gruppen dreieinhalb Stunden auf
dem Gelände der Zeche Zollverein
unterwegs, um rätselhafte Hinweise zu
entdecken und zu entschlüsseln, kniffe-
lige Rätsel zu lösen und zusammen die
Umgebung zu erforschen. Dabei kam
es unter anderem auf mathematisches
Verständnis, Geschichtskenntnisse und
Kombinationsgabe an.
Beide Teams erfüllten die Aufgaben er-
folgreich und tauschten anschliessend
ihre Erfahrungen beim gemeinsamen
Mittagessen aus.
NeueLehrstellenbeiMCAllschwil
Ab 2012 werden zwei neue Ausbil-
dungsplätze in den Bereichen Produk-
tionsmechanik und Logistik angeboten.
Weiterhin wird auf dem kaufmänni-
schen Sektor, in der Informatik und der
Konstruktion ausgebildet. Damit wird
es künftig acht anstatt wie bisher sechs
Lehrstellen geben.
Die Lernenden werden in allen
Unternehmens bereichen von engagier-
ten Ausbildenden betreut: René Heer
(Personalwesen), Myriam Schwyzer und
François Abt (Einkauf), Anne Schittly
und Marco Richterich (Verkauf), Nicole
Nadler (Zoll/Spedition/Lager), Christine
Horisberger (Buch haltung), Hansruedi

Team-building:geocachinginEssenThe present‑day working environment calls for more than just specialised knowledge. It is also important to be able to work in a team and to think in a cross‑linked manner. Trainees at Multi‑Contact Essen were able to train these abilities in a group event.
Team-building events are intended to
strengthen the sense of fellowship of
a company’s employees and promote
communication. In activities such as
aerial rope courses, dragon boat races
or scavenger hunts, the participants
always work together in teams in which
each individual contributes his or her
special abilities in order to reach the
common goal.
Under the motto ”together we are
strong” the trainees of Multi-Contact
Essen took part in such an event. In
the geocaching – a kind of modern
scavenger hunt with GPS receivers–
two groups of five trainees spent three
and a half hours on the grounds of the
”Zollverein” coal mine looking for and
deciphering cryptic clues, solving tricky
puzzles and exploring the site together.
Among other things, this called for a
grasp of mathematics, a knowledge of
history and the power of deduction.
Both teams successfully solved the
tasks and afterwards met for lunch
where they were able to exchange their
experiences.
NewapprenticeshippositionsatMCAllschwil
From 2012, two new apprenticeship
positions will be offered in the fields of
production mechanics and logistics.
Multi-Contact will continue to train staff
in the commercial sector, information
technology and design. This means
that there will now be places for eight
instead of the previous six trainees.
The trainees are in the care of highly
committed instructors: René Heer
(human resources), Myriam Schwyzer
and François Abt (purchasing), Anne
Schittly and Marco Richterich (sales),
Nicole Nadler (customs/forwarding/
warehousing), Christine Horisberger
(accounting), Hansruedi Gschwind (IT),
Daniel Stich (design) and Rolf Loch-
brunner (workshop).

virons. Il fallait entre autres faire preuve
de compréhension mathématique, de
connaissances historiques et d’esprit de
déduction.
Les deux équipes ont rempli leurs mis-
sions avec succès et ensuite échangé
leurs expériences au cours du déjeuner
en commun.
Nouvellesplacesd’apprentichezMCAllschwil
A partir de 2012, deux nouvelles places
seront proposées dans les services
mécanique de produc tion et logistique.
Des formations sont toujours en cours
dans le secteur commercial, dans l’in-
formatique et la construction. Il y aura
par conséquent à l’avenir huit places
d’apprenti au lieu de six actuellement.
Les apprentis sont suivis dans tous
les services par des maîtres d’appren-
tissage engagés : René Heer (service
du personnel), Myriam Schwyzer et
François Abt (achats) Anne Schittly et
