Ever since I was a little girl I’ve always wanted to model and be in beauty pageants… I never know it was possible.

I am Karinn Manning and I’m Miss. Jr Teen Wesley Chapel. I am 13 years of age and attend Dr. John Long Middle School. I’m original from Long Island, New York. When I was 9 years old I moved to Wesley Chapel, Florida. At first I really, didn’t want to move, but I’m glad I did. Florida has changed the way I look at life.

My first pageant was March 20, 2010 it was called Miss. Teen Beauti-ful. I can remember ever single detail of that night. I was ever excited and nerv-ous. I had to do two 30 second speeches. One on what I want to be wanted to be when I get older and the other why I should be Miss. Teen Beauti-ful. In an additional to that I had to do interviews. The interviewers were Ebony Fashion Fair models, make-up artists, the judges, and the founder of Essence Magazine, and Jonathan Sabasion. The hardest part of the pageant was the in-terviewer with Mr. Sabasion. During the interviewer I remember two things that my mom told me; “If it doesn’t make since don’t say it” and “Think Karinn, think before you talk”. In the end I came in as 3rd runner up. The prize money for 3rd runner up was five hundred dollars. For my first pageant I thought I did pretty well.

From my first pageant I meet some really great people. I met Chondra Profit, an Ebony Fashion Fair model. Jonathan Sabasion, the founder of Es-sence Magazine. Jada Collins, an Ebony Fashion Fair model and my modeling coach. From working with Miss. Jada I’ve learn that she is an amazing person, and is truly passionate about helping young girls. I’ve also met Deonna Pinkerton, an Ebony Fashion Fair Model. Deonna is

absolute hilarious, beautiful and a amazing runway and print model!

So, after my first pageant I was ready for the next one. About two weeks later my mom found a pageant called Miss. Wesley Chapel. I was on the school bus going when she sent me the text massage. I was so excite I was jumping up and down in my sit. I started preparing. The pageant would be in about two months in May.

By that time I was already out of school, for summer break. So, I was just doing what any other kid does during the summer. Waking up at noon, going to the pool, and texting people I haven’t seen all summer, till I got a phone call from my mom. She basically told me I won Miss. Jr Teen Wesley Chapel. At first I didn’t under-stand want she was talking about till she fully explained it. To enter the pageant you had pay an entry fee. I was the only girl in my division that paid. Therefore, all the other girls were atomically disqualified. My mom says it was the grace of god, I think so to.

Even though, there was no pag-eant, we still had a crowning. The crown-ing, is apart of the pageant, at the end. Because there was no pageant, they made the crowning as its own event. Week after week the crowning got cancelled. And to be honest I really lost my interest. So, fi-nally we really had the crowning. I was very excited, till I found out that they didn’t have my sash. I would be the only girl without a sash. After, hearing this I really didn’t want to go to the crowning. My mom told you don’t need sash you great with or without it you just go up there and smile and plus it just covers up your dress! My mother really encouraged me and made me smile.

Later that night I thought about all the things I could do as Miss. Jr Teen Wesley Chapel. I knew the first thing I wanted to do was a donation drive for the sea birds and sea turtles in the BP oil spill. I picked this because seeing pictures on the internet of the sea birds and turtles were heartbreaking. Also, my plat form is saving and helping animals, pacifically marine life. The donation drive didn’t turn out to be a great success. I did get donations but a very small amount. All thought, the donation drive was not a great success, I still designed

to give the bottles to SaveOurSea Birds, because I knew every bottle of Dawn Dish Soap would count. SaveOurSea Birds is an organization, which is helping to hand wash sea birds and sea turtles.

My favorite thing about being Miss. Jr Teen Wesley Chapel is being able to help people and animals. I love the helping animals it’s not some thing I like to do, it’s a passion. With the title Miss. Jr Teen Wesley Chapel I get to work with amazing organizations that help animals. My goal one day is to go to Taiji, Japan and help save a group of dolphins. 25,000 dolphins killed each year in Japan, fishermen in the tiny village of Taiji the slaughter of dolphins. Dolphins that are not killed are sold for as much as $154,000. Dolphins that are not sold are slaughter and sold for their meat. What people in Taiji don’t know or refuse to believe is dolphin meat is highly toxic. It is high in mercury which hazardous to your health.

Winning Miss. Jr Teen Wesley Chapel has been a great experience. I’ve have learn so much, and still am learn this in the process. I would like to thank my wonderful family and especially my mom for always supporting me, Kimberly Brown for helping me for with every thing, you’re an amazing lady. And last my brothers, thanks for always having my back!

Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedica-tion. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.

the person they really want to be.

This made me think. How much could we accomplish if we were brave enough to step out of our comfort zones? Do we really need to be assigned a “coach”, in order to step out into the unknown? For me, the answer to that question is an as-tounding NO! So I’ve decided that this year, I am going to challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone and do things that inch me closer and closer to becoming the person I envision myself being; even if it means being a little un-comfortable. Now I know I can expect some anxiety the first couple of attempts at the unknown, but I have faith that with each exercise in ‘dis’comfort, it will become eas-ier for me to step out of my comfort zone. I am challenging each of you to do the same! Think about what it is that you want to accomplish this year. Now think about what is holding you back from ac-complishing those goals. Remove those

Happy 2011! Like millions of people around the world, you may have made a New Years resolution; and like millions of people, many of you may have already broken yours (LOL). Well, I’ve also made a resolution for 2011 and I chal-lenge each of you to join me in, ‘Breaking Free of Comfort’.

Recently I was watching an episode of MTV’s television show ‘Made’. The premise of the show is based on a teen-ager who wishes to change some aspect of their life; to accomplish this MTV equips the student a personal “MADE coach”. The MADE coach is a ‘expert’ in their field and is assigned to help the student completely transform their life within 6-8 weeks. The common theme of each episode is that the “MADE coach” comes up with varies exer-cises that forces the student out of his/her comfort zone and pushes them to become

obstacles (at least some of them) and take that step towards achieving your dreams.

Journal your experience and share them with us! We would love to hear your stories.

Sincerely,

Editor-in-Chief
