INSTRUCTIONS

It is in your interest to carefully read the instructions contained in this booklet. They are

indispensable to carrying out the test in a correct manner. WARNING: the time limit assigned to

you includes the reading of these instructions as well as the completion of the test.

The test consists of various types of questions. For each question, you will be given four

possible answers. For each question, you must choose only one of the answers provided. Choose the

most correct answer.

You will find the questions in this booklet. You must mark your answers on the answer

sheet that has been provided along with the booklet.

Mark your answers by filling in the corresponding box ( ) on the answer sheet.

ATTENTION: do not write your answers in this booklet. Use the appropriate answer sheet that has

been provided.

On the answer sheet, only fill in the boxes ( ) that correspond with the answers that you

want to give.

You are not allowed to change your answer once it has been filled in on the sheet.

Always check that the number of the question in the booklet is the same as the one placed

next to the box in which you mark your answer on the answer sheet.

Make sure - before you start - that there are no printing errors in the booklet and or on the

answer sheet. If you find any errors, immediately bring them to the attention of one of the assistants

who will provide you with a different booklet.

Here are some examples of the kind of questions that you will find in the booklet and with

explanations for how you should respond. Carefully read the examples and explanations relating

thereto. Do not write the answers to the examples on the answer sheet. Questions relating to the

actual test begin on page 4.

EXAMPLES

To answer question E1, read the following passage:

On the economic front, there are also clear signs of rapid changes; one of which is connected to the

restructuring of companies, which is becoming more frequent on average, even to compete

internationally.

E1. After reading the excerpt, it is now known that:

1. small businesses in our country do not have restructuring problems

2. international competition has an impact on the need for companies to restructure more

frequently than in the past

3. our products are competitive, especially abroad

4. our country remains economically stagnant for small and medium-sized companies

Regarding example E1, the correct answer is indicated by the number 2. To answer,

therefore, you should black out box 2 on the answer sheet, in correspondence to example E1.

Example E2 presents a histogram showing the number of men and women who work in the

three departments of the Rossi & C. company.

Page 3: MAG DID 1/17 - luiss.it

Page 3

E2. What is the percentage of women who work at Rossi & C.?

1. 50%

2. 30%

3. 26.5%

4. 37.5%

To find the percentage of women who work at Rossi & C., you need to calculate how many

people in total work at the company (36 + 9 + 6 + 8 + 9 + 12 = 80). Then, calculate how many of

these people are women (9 + 9 + 12 = 30). With this data, it is now possible to calculate the

percentage [(30/80) x 100], which is equal to 37.5%. Therefore, the correct answer is number 4. To

answer, therefore, you should black out box 4 on the answer sheet, in correspondence to example

E2.

Inside the test booklet, you will find questions that will test your knowledge of English. You

will be presented with a passage in English, in which some words are missing and marked with an

ellipsis in the text (........). You will have to choose the option, among the four presented, that you

think best fills in the gap to complete the sentence. You will also be presented with some questions

concerning specific fields, and logic and reasoning. Finally, you will be asked to solve some

mathematical problems.

In the booklet, you will find questions similar to the above examples. Read each question

carefully and give your answer on the answer sheet.

REMEMBER:

• do not mark your answers in this booklet

• give your answers on the answer sheet by shading in the box ( ) corresponding to your chosen

answer

• you may not correct your answers once they have been given

• the tests will be marked as follows: 1 point for every correct answer, –0.25 points for every

incorrect answers, 0 points for every missed or multiple (double) answer

• make sure you answer all kind of questions

BEGIN NOW AND… GOOD LUCK!

Consider the following text to answer the questions no. 22 to no. 26

Economic development in the Medieval West, from XI century to XII century, was the result of a population growth. It was about dealing with a higher number of people to feed, clothe and house. Digging up and crop extension were the main remedies for this population increase. The increase in the income through intensive procedures was a secondary aspect. The size of the great Romanesque and Gothic churches itself met, at first, only the need to accommodate a larger Christian community. Ecclesiastical crops, which witnessed the economy, often increased or reduced their production according to the change in the monastic population. It was normal that this indifference and hostility to economic progress were reflected in the monetary economy field. All medieval social categories were subject to severe economic pressures, which opposed any build-up that could lead to economic progress. In the case of a build-up, it was about a hoarding that dried up precious objects and had no economic function, but only a prestige function. In the case of a crisis, precious plates and treasures were used to meet the basic needs and did not feed any production activity. 22. The increase in the income coming from the new cultivation methods:

1. benefitted the affluent classes only 2. was a secondary aspect in the economic growth 3. gave impetus to an increased demand for agricultural lands 4. increased the demand for land workers

23. Which important need has influenced the XI and XII century? 1. Meeting the vital needs of the population 2. The continuous demand for consumer goods 3. The widespread use of the currency 4. The use of usury

24. What fuelled the economic growth mentioned in the text? 1. The increase in trade exchanges 2. The increase in the population 3. The ambition of enrichment of the various monarchies 4. The more relaxing atmosphere in the relationships among the States

25. Why did they increase the size of the places of worship? 1. To show the emergence of ecclesiastical power 2. Because the Church’s riches were increased thanks to alms and tithes 3. To meet concretely space needs 4. Because the Church’s power of conversion increased the number of believers

26. In the context of the text, “build-up” means: 1. jealously guarding the money 2. buying real estates 3. buying tangible but fruitless valuable objects 4. continuously seeking money to capitalize

68. Read the passage below carefully Anyone who has ever had a delicious piece of garlic bread knows that there is a price to pay for eating it: the dreaded garlic breath. What makes garlic so good at making your breath smell so bad? The main culprit is a compound called allyl methyl sulfide. As your body digests the garlic, the sulfide is released into your bloodstream. From there, it travels through your body until it is eliminated through your digestive system, your urine, or out of your pores. But some of the allyl methyl sulfide also crosses from the bloodstream into the air that fills your lungs. As you breathe this air out, the garlic smell goes with it. This is why no matter how many pieces of gum you chew, how often you brush your teeth, or how much mouthwash you swish, a garlicky meal can give you stinky breath for days. Which of the following paragraphs accurately summarizes the information presented in the passage?

Consider the following text to answer the questions no. 71 to no. 75

The possibility of trade between Europeans and Indians existed from the beginning and was based, on both sides, on their availability of surplus goods that attracted the counterparty. Prolonged contacts between the two societies led to mutual dependence and cultural changes. When the Indians showed a preference for European clothing and utensils than the products of their craft, which were blocked at the Neolithic age, they were co-opted by the economy of the European market up to relying on it completely. The possession of firearms, available only through trade with Europeans, became indispensable; alcoholic beverages produced cases of alcoholism and psychological discouragement. The competition to secure a lead position on the market forced the Indians to internal fights, the colonial expansion deprived them of the possessions and the religious missions of the conquerors caused rifts in their social institutions. For Europeans, the contact with the Indian culture had more positive effects. The Indians fed the first colonizers and taught them how to deal with unknown cultivations; moreover, they served as guides for the explorers and delivered their hunting grounds. After the Europeans had learned how to build and use canoes, moccasins and shelters in the forests, they could do without the Indians; the latter, however, received exchange goods but, having received neither the tools nor the knowledge necessary to produce those goods independently, they still depended on the Europeans and, at the same time, they forgot their Neolithic techniques. 71. European market 3. Because they suffered from a sort of psychological inferiority with respect to the Europeans 4. Because the intellectual superiority of Europeans was obvious

74. Why was there an intense trade between Europeans and Indians? 1. Because there was the need for both sides to establish a relationship of peaceful coexistence 2. Because it allowed to acquire goods that attracted both parties 3. Because trade was the means to start any type of negotiation 4. Because the European political life encouraged this exchange of goods

75. The Europeans used to offer: 1. useless and low-quality products 2. new goods and products that changed the Indians’ culture 3. what would later become useful to the Indians for further development 4. products that allowed them to make Indians more independent
