in scouring the headlines for news of the kidnapped boys, so far I’ve been disheartened that the situation basically remains the same, but I did find a very positive news item on a different subject which I’d like to share with you.On Shabbos Parshas Shlach, two weeks ago, over 2,000 people attended an epic

Shabbos Friday night dinner. It took place, not in Jerusalem or Bnei Brak, but in a less likely locale—Hangar 11 in the port of Tel Aviv.

Sponsored by a kiruv organization dedicated to creating a vibrant Jewish life in Tel Aviv, the event was almost a year in the making and required such items as 800 bottles of wine, 2,000 challah rolls, 80 long tables, 1,800 pieces of chicken, 1,000 pieces of beef, and 250 vegetarian portions. With 2,300 individuals signed up to come, there were another 3,000 people on the waiting list.

Before the meal, a giant Kabbalas Shabbos service was held outside of the hangar. Once the meal started, large signs were held up for the benefit of those new to Shabbos observance with such strategic directives as “Shalom Aleichem, ”Stand up,” and “Sit Down.” The words to many of the key prayers were also projected on the walls of the hangar. One of the organizers stood on a stage at the center of the room and roared out the hamotzi blessing while raising a two meter long challah above his head.

$25,000 was contributed from donors throughout the world to pay for such things as all those place settings and Shabbos delicacies. Actually, this event achieved the world record for the largest Shabbos dinner in The Guiness Book of Records. In order to break the previous record, there had to be a minimum of 1,000 Shabbos guests, and when it was announced that there were 2,226 people in attendance, the crowd erupted in cheers and the spontaneous singing of “Am Yisrael Chai.”

In the merit of this massive Shabbos hospitality and all the many acts of chessed and kiruv, both big and small, may we hear only good news for every individual and for Klal Yisrael. May Hashem bring home, safe and sound, Yaakov Naftali ben Rachel Devorah, Gilad Michoel ben Bat Galim, and Eyal ben Iris Teshura. Have a beautiful Shabbos and a Good Chodesh Tammuz,

Klal Yisrael needs both of us-- people who are concerned with the Klal's parnassah prospects, as well as people who sound the alarm at the great and true dangers faced by our generation.

VOL. 5 #177 • J u n e 20, 2014

ReGaRdinG RaBBi GinZBeRG’s coluMn in last week’s issue, the media, and especially the internet, are probably the most spiritually destructive forces since Creation.  Whatever merits the internet may have, they are not capable of redeeming its potential for evil.  Anything good on the internet, including Torah, is just a diversion to prevent people from realizing what terrible depravity lies beneath the surface.

You can spread Torah with the internet as well as you could put out a fire with gasoline.  Of course, there is a potential to make money through the internet.  But those who do not make use of this opportunity will have an easier time excusing their poverty in the World to Come than those who allow this spiritual danger to penetrate their families and their homes for the sake of parnassah.

-A.R., Sanhedria

Rabbi Issamar Ginzberg responds:That is exactly my point. The unfiltered internet is like Grand Central

Station  with many seedy destinations. Its danger is that anything is instantly accessible. However, using filtered internet in a proper work environment is standard today, and will only become more so.

At this point, there are two choices: Train people on proper internet use with appropriate safeguards, or demonize it in a way that makes us feel super holy, but which leads down a very slippery slope when the need will arise for those people to use the internet at some point.

From my vantage point, I see people who can stay away from the internet as totally being commended by us all. Some people don't drive, some people don't read any newspaper (including this one), and

some people only eat food that is home baked, nothing from any store with any hechsher, no matter how machmir.

Those are all very wonderful things, but the readers of my columns are probably people with business interests who live in the same world as people who would go to Manhattan to work every day by train. And the internet, when properly used, is much, much more kosher than that.

Since my article came out erev Shabbos, and I'm now responding to you on Sunday morning,  it's fair to presume that your letter was emailed to THE ENGLISH UPDATE. See how important the internet can be? Without modern technology, your letter would appear in a few months’ time and have much less effect.

Klal Yisrael needs both of us-- people who are concerned with the Klal's parnassah prospects, as well as people who sound the alarm at the great and true dangers faced by our generation.

 I give you much credit!

distRiBution of tHe last two weeks’ issues was GReat-- I got the UPDATE on Thursday evening in shul. Obviously, the new distribution system is working well. Good luck and keep it up.

-Sylvain Blumenfrucht

THE ENGLISH UPDATE responds:Thanks so much for your feedback. We have been working very hard

the past two months to improve our distribution, and we were hoping that the situation would improve. Please keep the updates coming since it always helps us to know what’s going on.

out & About

flowing through Midbar yehudah, the icy stream  that originates in the waters of Ein Mabua (Mabua  Spring) is a delight to wade through.

The sight of golden desert hills  towering above makes this an exhilarating  experience. The wind sings though the tall,  thick rushes on either side of the rivulet that meet to form long, shaded tunnels as they intertwine  above your head. The sweet smell of wild peppermint  plants fills the air, as their purple blooms sway in the breeze.

In the clear water, which at some points reaches  above your knees, tadpoles and small schools of fish swim by. You can also see many freshwater gastropods  in the water, clinging to the banks of the stream. This type of black snail only lives in freshwater habitats, and its presence indicates that the water is fresh and safe to enter, although not to drink.

The spring is  known as the “Ein HaMeshuga” (The Crazy Spring) because of the way the water disappears and after a while fills back up, without any set schedule.  The water comes from the rainwater in the Judean Hills.

The spring water drips through the limestone  in the ground, filling

up a cave. When the cave is full, the water flows into the pool for about 20 minutes. At the end of that time, the pool begins to empty out and the process repeats itself. This bubbling spring was cemented into a pool by the  British. The ruined concrete house close to the pool is a pump-house they built.

The famous aqueduct that the Hasmoneans  built in 180 BCE, and which begins near this  pump-house, stretches 20 kilometres to Jericho.  King Herod renovated the aqueduct and added  bridges to it. He also dug out tunnels. Since the  aqueduct cannot carry large quantities of water,  the water flows out in a waterfall and creates a small pool.

caution:  You shouldn’t travel

too far down the steam (not more than 10 to  15 minutes) since it eventually reaches Jericho, which is in enemy hands. Also, to be on the safe side, you should only visit the spring with a group of people.

Bring along plenty of water, a hat for sun protection, and plastic shoes so that you can wade though the water.

Ein Mabua, called Ein al-Fawar by the Arabs, is  located about 22 kilometers east of Jerusalem. To get there, take Route 1 from Jerusalem

towards the Dead Sea, leaving the city through the Derech Ha Hatzofim Tunnels. It is approximately a 35 minute drive along Route 458 (Kvish Alon or Derech Eretz HaMirdafim). This road twists and turns  sharply as it travels down very steep inclines,  toward the place where people park their vehicles.  From this parking spot, there is a further steep descent by  foot to reach the Mabua Spring.

TIPS FROM CLALIT SMILE’S PEDIATRIC DENTIST, DR. ETTI DAYAN

Often children don’t complain or don’t have severe pain with tooth decay, however there have been cases of children with problems even at the age of a year and a

half. Tooth decay stemming from acid secreted by the gums can lead to the rotting and loss of an entire tooth.

Bits of food remaining on the teeth feed the bacteria which causes the acid to eat away the tooth enamel. Because children’s teeth are smaller and softer, the inner part of the tooth can become decayed much quicker. It is important for parents to examine their children’s mouths periodically, whether the child complains or not.

If there is severe tooth decay or infection in a baby tooth, there is a danger that it can affect the bud of the permanent tooth below it.

Since dental care is very difficult and stressful for young children, it is definitely worthwhile to take preventative measures. Good dental hygiene can help even children with a predisposition to more cavities.

Flossing a child’s teeth is recommended even from the age of 2½ or 3. It is also preferable not to give a child a bottle at night, especially not with a sweetened drink beginning as soon as he/she has teeth. It’s a good idea to wipe a baby’s gums and teeth after eating with a wet cloth diaper or piece of gauze. You can start brushing your child’s teeth at a young age even without toothpaste. As the child gets older, he will be able to learn not to swallow the toothpaste. No more than the amount of toothpaste the size of a pea is necessary for adequate dental care.

An international speaker, rAbbi

DoViD KAPlAN is a rebbe at

Yeshivas  Ohr somayach and

a mashgiach at Yeshivas Bais

Yisroel. These stories are taken from his

book shabbos Table impact (shanky’s

Publications).

Parsha impact

At the Shabbos Table with Rabbi Dovid Kaplan

sTories For PaRsHas Massa'aiPARSHA IMPACT “…and tHey caMPed…”

At the end of his routine, a famous comedian would thank his audience and then finish by saying “Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.” No one knew who this Mrs. Calabash was and why he always mentioned her. He was asked repeatedly to reveal the secret, but never did. He would offer various explanations, but everyone knew he was joking around.

After he died a very old man, someone investigated in order to find out who this mysterious Mrs. Calabash was. What he discovered is a powerful lesson for us all. When this comedian was first breaking into show business, he was broke. There was an older lady named Mrs. Calabash who was his landlord, and she let him stay in his apartment even when he couldn’t afford to pay the rent. It was out of a feeling of gratitude – even after so many years had passed - that he mentioned her at the end of each performance.

Comment: There is no statute of limitations on hakarat hatov. We must show our gratitude for the good we receive from others, and we must do so for a long time. While we have no need to turn to the outside world for life guidance, if it comes our way we make use of it. So thanks for the lesson, Mister Comedian, wherever you are.

“you sHall dRive out all tHe inHaBitants of tHe land…”

One of the ideas behind this command is that the Bnei Yisrael should not be influenced by their corrupt and evil ways.

There are over seven billion people on the planet so some of them are bound to be a little, uh, different. With that introduction, you should have no problem believing the following. There is a kid in Brazil who is known as the “magnet kid.” For some reason, which even doctors are baffled by, his body has a magnetic field which allows metal to

stick to him. His father has capitalized on this amazing

talent by taking him around the world and using him as an attraction. He is put on public display, and all the onlookers may then – after paying, of course – put various metal objects against his body, and then gasp in wonder when they don’t fall off. Pots, hammers, and anything else metallic that is placed against him stays attached due to the magnetic force in his body. Now, isn’t that worth paying to see?

Comment: Although circus geeks are out of our realm of interest, we can gain an important insight from this kid. The reality of life is that stuff “sticks” to us. Whatever we’re exposed to leaves an impression. A Torah Jew must do all in his power to avoid exposure to these influences, because at the end of the day, we all have a “magnetic field” inside us – even if we don’t speak Portuguese.

“…accoRdinG to its BoRdeRs”The train was doing its ride around the zoo

on an elevated track that allowed the visitors to see down into the cages of the various animals. As they circled past the creatures in their enclosures, twenty eight year old Hector Jamalo suddenly stood up in his seat and jumped out of the moving train over the 16 foot reinforced fence surrounding the Bengal tiger Terry.

Terry was not happy about having his space invaded, and spent the next ten minutes doing things to Hector that took up almost a paragraph of print in the newspaper to describe. Just about every part of Hector’s body suffered serious injury. The zoo people managed to somehow get him out of there, and remarkably enough he was still alive.

When he was able to speak, the authorities asked him what he was thinking. “I wanted to experience the essence of tiger” was his rational explanation.

Note: If a human being is capable of getting to a stage where he wants to jump a wall to get to a tiger – which most would agree is not that tempting - we gain an insight into why Chazal felt we need barriers and fences to keep us away from various temptations, all of which are more enjoyable than “essence of tiger.”

When he Was able to speak, he Was askeD What he Was thinking. “i WanteD

to experience the essence of tiger” Was his rational explanation.

WAIT FOR IT...August 14, 2014Binyanei HaumaJerusalem

THE JEWISH WEEKLY ENGLISH MAGAZINEInteresting. Varied. Timely

THINKING OF SWITCHING BANKS?!APARTMENT HUNTING?!

continued on page 22

The FAulTY BatteRy

it’s time for a science lesson!Say you have a toy truck that is powered

by a series of eight “C” batteries. It’s written in the directions from the company that you should use all new batteries. You have six new ones, but you need eight, so you go and put two old ones mixed with the new ones and everything works perfectly.

Amazing, right? So why do the companies say to use all new

batteries? I get it-- they are simply trying to sell more batteries.

Well, not quite. What actually happens when you line up batteries is that the burnt-out battery ends up blocking the fresh full power of the other batteries from giving power (or rather, full power) to the device. You might actually be better off power-wise, though not safety-wise, playing with the device itself to work using less batteries. Essentially, what I’m trying to say is that the daisy chain of batteries will be blocked by the weakest link from doing the job it’s intended to do.

But what’s this got to do with me? you wonder. I’m glad you asked.

Because in your own business process, or system, or funnel, there are gaps. Think of them like potholes in the road that block cars from travelling smoothly- and as they grow or as the weather changes, they change, getting larger and causing accidents as people swerve around them.

Likewise, in your business there may also be gaps in getting a customer to take the next step forward in the logical progression of doing business, and then more business in larger

amounts as time goes on. And if the customer is not going forward, why is that the case?

Here are six things you can do to help your client see the green light in working with you to the next level-- from getting to the first meeting, to the first dollar, to the recurring seven figure contract:

tHe case studyOne of the reasons that people are scared

to take the next step forward is much like a child when they begin to walk or crawl; they are unsure that the ground is solid and that they are sure footed enough to take on that challenge. Using case studies of successful past clients with whom you have succeeded helps your clients visualize their own success projected into the future. This is a very powerful and widely used technique to give people the comfort and trust that they crave.

tHe HuMan eleMentAdding an unrelated-to-business blurb

(“when I was a kid…”) adds emotion and personality to your relationship with the prospect, so they see you as a human being and not just a business character. It helps to forge a connection, which helps the business get done.

wiffy itTry to spend more time explaining to your

prospect what’s in it for them. Are you giving them features (“. . .your ads will be nicer”) with actual benefits (“…with better advertising, your ads will draw more customers’ into your business”)? The more you can extract benefits from the features you’re offering, the easier the client sells himself on using you.

tHe GloRy of iMPeRfectionOkay, I’ll admit it here. In case you didn’t know this before,

I’m not perfect—but neither are you. And your clients know this to be true—and if they don’t know it, now’s the time to tell them. Your clients are actually aware that there’s no free lunch, and that no one is perfect. So whatever that imperfection is, spill it. And show the upside of it as well. There is one, I guarantee it.

PRofessional and stRateGic MaRketinG use

Professional design doesn’t mean running to a graphic designer and making your ads more sleek or modernistic. In fact, ugly ads in the right context sell better. Serif fonts, credibility seals, ad placement, and a slew of other techniques can make the difference between ads that don’t even cover their cost (“but it’s branding!” I hear you shriek) and ads that pay for themselves over and over again.

don’t Be scaRed of coMPaRisonsCoke never mentions Pepsi in their ads. Pepsi can, and

does, poke Coke all the time. In fact, Pepsi’s biggest success was the “Pepsi Challenge” campaign which had people blind- taste the two colas and decide for themselves. Don’t ignore the competition or pretend they don’t exist. Create advertising that calls them out head on. Assuming you have a product that truly is superior, it shows clients that you have the confidence to be in the same room as the bigger boys and yet stand the heat. And that confidence factor is what accelerates the speed of the client on his bicycle as he rides down the mountain, spending more and more with you in an easier than before acceleration.

And as long as the value is there—why ever stop?

Obviously a horse doesn't need to get an apology. Abby needs to give the

apology for her own personal growth.

Vegetable Lasagne Without the Noodles

recipes

recipe by Vani Hari

DAIRY seRVes 6

Okay, the title of this post gives it away, but let

me start by saying you will not miss the noodles

in this vegetable lasagne recipe – I promise!

It’s oozy, yummy, and so good just like traditional

lasagne but instead of being just mostly grains and dairy –

this recipe is almost entirely made up of vegetables. A huge

win in the nutrition department, if you ask me.

This dish freezes beautifully (I’ve got half a dish in my

freezer right now) and is the perfect straight from the

freezer into the oven kind of meal when you are short on

time or have a busy week. It’s definitely a crowd pleaser too,

perfect for gatherings.

Ingredients:1 large jar of strained tomatoes

1 onion2 garlic cloves

½ tsp red pepper flakes½ tsp salt

1 Tbsp olive oil1 egg

1 container of ricotta cheese 1 Tbsp dried italian herbs

or ¼ cup fresh basil chopped½ cup shredded parmesan

½ cup mozzarella or other cheese1 large zucchini sliced long into ½ pieces

1 large yellow squash sliced long into ½ pieces4 cups of spinach or other dark leafy greens

Preparation:1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. For the tomato sauce, start by sauteeing onions in olive oil for 5

mins on low/medium heat until tender

3. Add garlic and sautee 2 more minutes.

4. Add tomatoes, red pepper, and salt and bring to a boil, then

reduce to simmer.

5. Allow tomatoes to cook for at least 10 minutes. (Alternatively,

you can use your favorite jarred tomato sauce.)

6. In a bowl, combine egg, ricotta cheese, and herbs, and stir well.

7. Place about 1/3 of the cooked tomato sauce on the bottom of a

large baking dish.

8. Layer zucchini on top of tomato sauce.

9. Spread 1/2 of remaining ricotta mixture on top of zucchini.

10. Layer with other 1/3 of tomato sauce.

11. Layer squash on top of tomato sauce.

12. Spread remaining ricotta mixture on top of squash.

13. Layer greens on top of squash.

14. Top with remaining sauce and shredded cheese, and bake

covered for 30-40 minutes until bubbly and cheese is slightly

browned.

15. Allow lasagne to rest for 10 minutes before serving.Reprinted with the author’s permission

I remember that day clearly – or rather, some of the more salient features of that day.

It was winter: cold, rainy, gloomy, and miserable. It was also school vacation, which meant long, tedious days without structure, other than the one I myself imposed. But my form of structure had long since turned into a prison.

Prison was what was on my mind even when the letter arrived, although I didn’t yet know to call it by that name. I knew the letter would be arriving that day, or possibly the day after. I picked it up and looked at it impassively. I already knew, really, what was written inside, and there was no rush of emotion associated with confirming my expectations.

Indeed. I had been offered a full scholarship to Yale. A coveted place, one I had set my sights on long ago. So that would be the next station in my journey. Fine. But I had other things on my mind – I had to get out.

Yes, it was cold, rainy, gloomy, and miserable. But I had to get out for my bicycle r i d e — 4 0 m i n u t e s

up and down hills, panting from the exertion, shivering and sweating in the cold misty weather, feeling the familiar adrenalin rush that then substituted for pleasure in my grey life. Did I say gray? Life was then painted in shades of black. Grey would have been unexpected and I wouldn’t even have known what to do with it.

My “safe” regimenI escaped to my bedroom and tried

to avoid the tumult the letter had provoked. Nobody else possessed my black-tinted glasses, and nobody seemed to share my interpretation of the world. They were all busy celebrating, and in the midst of it, I somehow managed to slip out, undetected, or at least it appeared that way, into the garage to get my bicycle.

My bicycle was my friend. She even had a name. Not that I talked to her; I didn’t talk to pretty much anyone back then. There wasn’t time to talk. Time was for studying, homework, and then bicycle riding and swimming and sitting in the library reading

recipe books. People talked about stupid things, like their plans

for the future, their social lives, and their grades. I was

a straight-A student and it never occurred to me that

I would ever be anything

but. My social life was non-existent and my few attempts at changing that status quo had ended in dismal failure.

And as for plans for the future… what future? Looking into the future was, for me, like standing at the edge of a cliff and staring into the abyss. What, me? I had to jump off that last stretch of firm land and soar in the air with nothing to support me? How on earth was I supposed to do that?

My prison was my fortress and my bicycle my steady support, taking me places where I could breathe in the fresh, chilled air and whizz through the nothingness. There were few cars on the road that day, and the roads were slippery with the remnants of rain and the beginnings of a frost that would deepen that night. No matter. I pedaled hard up the steep hill that marked the toughest challenge of my ride and, as I crested the peak, felt the exhilaration anew as I prepared to swoop down, letting the air currents embrace me as I did.

In those days, that was the only embrace I knew.

When I got back, nobody seemed to have missed me. I entered the kitchen nonchalantly to find my aunt had arrived to join the celebration. My father had even opened a bottle of wine. There they were, all celebrating, ostensibly about me, but really it had nothing to do with me. They didn’t need me there and I didn’t want to be there. Once again, I had delivered the expected bill of goods and now I could go. I did.

Meeting their expectations was proving easy, but meeting my own standards became increasingly harder as the months passed.

That DayThe following is a true account of a young woman’s struggle with isolation and

despair as expressed in a serious eating disorder and grueling exercise regime. Misunderstood by her family, school, and an ineffectual psychologist, she describes with honesty and clarity the lonely path she took and her unexpected salvation.

Torat Hanefesh – The School of Jewish Psychology (www.torathanefesh.org) is now

entering its 8th year.

Torat Hanefesh offers multidisciplinary studies in the areas of Jewish psychology, from a diverse group of over 15 lecturers and professionals

in the field. We do not teach psychology from a Jewish perspective, but rather the authentic and purely Jewish approach to psychological well-being taught by the sages of the generations, focusing (but not limited to) the teachings of the Ba’al Shem Tov and his disciples. Based on the rigorous and in-depth expositions of these topics by Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburgh (www.inner.org), our coursework is laced with workshop-style classes that place greater emphasis on turning theory into practice, thereby offering both professionals and non-professionals a true understanding of our mental well-being and ailments as Jews. Key courses include: Rectifying the Ego, Anatomy of the Soul, the Ba’al Shem Tov’s 9 Stage Process for Change, Faith and Confidence, Experiencing the Sacred, Senses in the Super-consciousness, Wondrous Jewish Healers, Psychopathologies of Our Generation, and others.

Torat Hanefesh offers a 3 year certification program for women in Jewish Psychology (non-accredited) taught on Mondays at the Hebrew University, Mt. Scopus campus. Men can attend via live internet broadcast and recorded lectures.

Please join us for a one day introduction to Torat Hanefesh and Jewish Psychology from 10am to 2:30pm on June 30, at the Maiersdorf (faculty) building at Hebrew U., Mt. Scopus. For women only.
