October 2016

Dear Extension Homemaker,

I just returned from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual meeting in Big Sky, Montana. I have always thought Kentucky weather was unpredictable, but Montana may have us beat. We arrived on a beautiful, sunny, 70 degree day; two days later we experienced snow and freezing temperatures. Brrr. I got a taste of what we will be facing soon. Let’s not wish the warm weather away yet.

The conference was a great opportunity to network with Extension Agents from across the country, attend informative seminars and pick up new resources from the exhibitor hall. I even won a national award for the newspaper article I wrote about my Mother-in-law’s 100th birthday. The conference was a great experience and I hope to share some of the programming ideas over the next few months. Most of all, I learned that I am in Extension heaven here in Madison County, Kentucky. I have great co-workers, strong support from our county government, and amazing Extension Homemakers.

Last call, if you have not signed up for the Bluegrass Area Craft Festival, the deadline is September 30th. The registration information is available at the office or at http://ces.ca.uky.edu/clark. Don’t miss this great opportunity to get started on your holiday gifts.

If you plan to attend the area meeting in Scott County on October 21st, (pg.4) registration is due to our office by October 7th. If you would like to carpool, meet at the Meijer parking lot, close to Culvers at 8:15 a.m..

Election of some new officers and area chairpersons will take place at this meeting.

Looking Back: We had a great turn out for our Officer and Chair Training. Our Board Members were energetic and enthusiastic in giving their presentations for the upcoming year. This is a busy group of Educational Chairs. Please come out and help with these key programs and tell others about all the great things Extension Homemakers are doing. Thanks again to those who attended and expressed how much they enjoyed the training, spending time and talking with each other. If members from your club did not get their materials, please check with the Extension Office or your club's president. Looking Forward: I hope lots of you are planning to join in the activities for 2nd Sunday weekend, as well as the Bluegrass Area Fall Craft Festival being held again this year in Madison County. Don't forget Fall is recruitment time! Our Vice President, Connie Howe, has been working on new member recruitment for this homemaker year. Please join her in her efforts to increase membership by inviting new members or sponsoring new members as a gift to them to introduce them to our outstanding organization. Keep up the enthusiasm and support. Thanks for all of your participation and hard work! Autumn began Thursday, September 22, and will end December 21st. Autumn, also known as Fall, marks the transition from summer into winter, a season of change. October's the month when the smallest breeze gives us a shower of autumn leaves, bonfires and pumpkins, and leaves sailing down. October is red and golden and brown. It's a wonderful time of year with cooler weather. It's my favorite season of the year. Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn. Joyce Cole, County President

Tuning Into the Times Thursday, October 27

1:00 & 6:30* pm Staying in tune to the times throughout life promotes lifelong learning, which increases knowledge, problem solving, and decision making. Staying on top of the latest technology and keeping up with the news also enhances brain stimulation and helps broaden social opportunities and networks. Seniors who drive successful aging through their zest for life and life long learning, tell us that they have lived so long because they continue to gain knowledge, practice problem solving and use their decision making skills. They keep “up to date” with the times, and technology. Join us on Thursday, October 27th, at 1:00 or 6:30*pm, as Liz Kingsland, Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences for Fayette County, shares with us how to stay tuned into the times. This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome, but you must register so we know how many to prepare for. Please call 623-4072 to register. *An evening session will be given only if at least six people pre-register.

CARE BEAR WORKSHOPS

The Bear Project will have some changes for this year. We can use the talents of each of you as we need people to draw bear patterns on fabric, sewers, cutters, stuffers, and people to embroidery faces on the bears. For safety reasons, since the bears are given to small children, the faces need to be embroidered only. The patterns for the bears have been slightly altered and hopefully are easier to sew. Get your new copy from your club sewing chair, or stop by the County Office to pick one up. The work dates for the “bears” are as follows: OCTOBER 4, and NOVEMBER 1, 9am to 2pm, with a light lunch provided. The date to have all bears into the Extension Office is DECEMBER 2. Please put these dates on your calendar.
