WHAT’S INSIDE: I hope that the new year is finding you all well. Illness has been hitting lots of families and schools. I know our office here has been hit hard—no one has escaped the crud! Make sure you are taking precautions to stay healthy, wash those hands, cover your mouth, and stay home if you are sick. Enough said.

Have you started any 4-H projects yet? Have you set your goals for this year? Christmas break was a great time to start them. If you didn’t, keep them in mind for future snow days.

Reminder to those of you that are taking part in the Beef Pen of 3 project, your feeding records are due to the Extension office by the 10th of each month. You may fax, email or send in paper copies. If you have questions about this, please don’t hesitate to contact beef superintendent Mark Moore, 515.462.4194, or myself.

Last thing I need to mention is for all 4-H livestock exhibitors. This year, if you are exhibiting livestock, you will need to have all of those animals en-tered into 4honline. You may enter them yourselves under the ANIMAL

bullet on your profile by May 15. If you had cattle nominated for state fair, you need to verify your animals by Jan. 15 if possible. If you have any questions about this, please, don’t hesitate to ask. Thank you!

2013 Requirements and Dates Set for Horse Project

Sunday, January 27, 2013—The annual “Kick Off Meeting” for the horse project—Jackson Building, MC Fairgrounds, 2 PM. It is strongly recommended that all horse project youth and families attend this information meeting. We

will discuss important dates and information relating to the upcoming year, including safety clinics, horsemanship skill assess-ment requirements, new classes and activities for county fair, and fundraiser information. Youth will receive a packet of infor-mation and details relating to the horse project for 2013. New youth can be measured for a complimentary riding helmet, which is required at all 4-H horse sponsored events.

In order for any horse project youth, 4-H or FFA, to be eligible to ride their horse at weekly riding classes, roping practice, or the Madison County Fair, members must attend and complete all phases of ONE horsemanship assessment/safety clinic pri-or to participation (4 will be offered).

Once a youth achieves a score of 40 in the Level 3 Horsemanship Skill assessment, they may opt out of participating in the safety clinic/horsemanship skill assessment and attend a riding clinic of their choice between January 1 and May 1 of the upcoming riding season. Must provide proof of attendance. 2010, 2011, & 2012 scores will count.

Youth must attend/participate in 4 weekly riding classes during May, June, or July to be eligible to compete in the Madison County Fair.

Safety Clinics: Sunday, March 17 & Sunday, April 21 at Wildwood Hills Ranch Monday, April 29 & Wednesday, May 18 at Madison County Fairgrounds

We will be asking families to sign up for dates and times for the Safety Clinic/Horsemanship Assessments.

Veterinary Services Provided at Safety Clinics Winterset Veterinary Center will be offering routine vaccinations/worming at the Horse Project Horsemanship Assessment/Safety Clinics this spring. Watch for details.

Important Info Regarding Winter Sports Trips/Activities!

Tis’ the season for 4-H club sledding and skiing trips. There are three important things to remember for proper insur-ance and risk management: 1. Obtain approval for trip/activity from Madison County

Extension Office. 2. Take out Special Activities coverage through Ameri-

can Income Life. The regular $1/yr/member coverage does not include downhill winter activities, but cover-age is provided through the Special Activities program. When taking out this insurance for events on or prior to December 31, 2011, note that the maximum bene-fits payable for winter sports are those shown under Level 1. Unless you desire a greater coverage level for the group during transportation, there is no reason to take out coverage other than the Level 1 insurance (cost is 15 cents/person/day). http://www.americanincomelife.com/who-we-serve/4-h-insurance

For events on or after January 1, 2012, AIL has new plan coverage levels. In case of accident, the new plan will provide benefits at the coverage level chosen. (Option A, B, or C at 20, 25, or 30 cents/day/person respectively). (Contact American Income Life for new brochures and additional information.) Given the mi-nor cost difference between Option A and Option C, and considering that when accidents happen during sledding or skiing they can be rather serious, it would seem prudent to insure at the highest level.

1. Participation in Downhill Winter Sports (downhill ski-ing, tobogganing, bob-sledding, snow tubing, and ice skating) requires the use of an additional waiver. This waiver must be completed by everyone participating in the activity and must be returned to the Extension Office before the activity occurs. You can obtain the Winter Sports Waiver at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/madison/sites/www.extension.iastate.edu/files/madison/Winter%20Sports%20Waiver.pdf.

Please contact Maria at 515.462.1001 or [email protected] for information about obtaining and completing these forms.
