4-H Summer Internship Opportunity
Nebraska Extension in Madison County announces a
part-time 4-H summer intern position for May and June
starting May 16, 2016, at the Lifelong Learning Center
in Norfolk. Requirements: two years completed college,
computer experience using Microsoft Office Programs,
creative design skills, patience to work with children,
understanding of developmental stages of youth, good
public relation skills, able to work independently,
capable of answering phones and other office work as
assigned. Previous 4-H member desired but not required.
Some weekends or nights may be required. Must
successfully complete background clearance before
hiring. Review of applications will begin April 25, 2016.
Position open until filled. UNL Extension programs
abide with the nondiscrimination policies of UNL and
the US Department of Agriculture. E-mail letter of

2016 NAYI Application Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute 2016 will
be held in Lincoln, Nebraska, from July 11-15.
Current high school juniors and seniors can apply
by completing the application form and a resume.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture will
provide all arrangements and the cost of meals,
lodging and `conference fees during the Institute
for each delegate. Transportation to Lincoln and
any other personal expenses during the Institute
will be the responsibility of the delegate.

One letter of recommendation
(from a high school principal,
superintendent, counselor, FFA
advisor, county extension
educator or 4-H club leader) is also required.

TRACTOR SAFETY COURSES
PLANNED
The 2016 Tractor Safety
Trainings will be held in
seven locations across
the state during May,
June, and July.
Any youth 14 or 15
years of age who works
on a farm or ranch other
than his/her parents’ is required to be certified
through a tractor safety course. Extension
Educators and field specialists will teach the two-
day courses.
Training in this area will be June 20—21 from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.
Cost for the course is $60, which includes all
course materials, lunch both days and breaks.
Registration is requested a week prior to class. For
details or to register, contact the Nebraska
Extension Office in Wayne at 402-375-3310.

TSC Paper Clover Fundraiser:
April 13 through April 24
Support 4-H at TSC from Wednesday, April 13
through Sunday, April 24. Of the $1 donated, 65
percent of the paper clover donation goes directly
to the 4-H county; five percent goes to the
Nebraska 4-H Foundation, and the remaining thirty
percent goes towards the National 4-H Council to
underwrite the program.

Regional Interview Contest
Held May 26 at the Lifelong Learning Center, the
Regional Interview Contest is open to 4-H members
age 11 and older as of January 1, 2016.
The Interview Contest is an
opportunity for members to practice
the real-life skill of applying for a
job involving a set of job
descriptions used to prepare for the
process of applying and interviewing
for a position. To enter the Interview
Contest the member must:
1. Choose one of the three job descriptions.
2. Develop a résumé utilizing real education
and experiences.
3. Write an accompanying cover letter for the
résumé. 4. Prepare for the interview
5. Fill out a job application the day of the
contest.
6. Participate in an actual interview.
GENERAL RULES:
4-H members enter the Interview Contest by
submitting a registration form, three copies of a
cover letter, and three copies of a résumé to:

Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Program
Offers Leader Certification Workshop
April 16 & 17, 2016
The upcoming Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports
Leader Certification Workshop will be held at the
Washington County Fairgrounds in Arlington,
Nebraska on April 16 and 17. The workshop is a
great opportunity to network with other 4-H
volunteer shooting sports instructors from across
Nebraska. Participants will share and learn
techniques and knowledge to develop the ability to
effectively lead a local shooting sports program;
learn to use shooting sports to develop youth of
strong character who possess effective skills for
living; gain certification in one of the following
disciplines: Shotgun, Hunting Skills, Rifle, or
Archery; and learn skills as an instructor.
Registration deadline is APRIL 5 and must be done

Registration fees are $100 for first-time
certification and $90 to add a discipline for
previously certified instructors. A paid registration
guarantees participant a spot. Fee includes program
materials and three meals; lunch on Saturday and
Sunday, and dinner on Saturday. Participants must
make their own lodging
arrangements. Registration on Saturday runs from
8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

Science Saturdays at Raising Nebraska
Celebrate the International Year of the Pulse through
Science Saturdays, free and open to the public, at
Raising Nebraska located on the State Fairgrounds in
Grand Island, NE. Science Saturday occurs the
second Saturday of every month from 10:00 to noon.
The highlighted program consists of an educational,
interactive 25-minute session. Upcoming programs:

The Second Annual Nebraska Mystery Foods Event
will be held on Friday, June 3. This event challenges
teams of youth ages 10 to 18 to use their creativity,
nutrition knowledge, and decision making to make a
dish onsite which includes mystery ingredients. This
event is open to all youth. More information will be
coming soon!

Nominate your 4-H club for the
4-H Club of the Month
The Nebraska 4-H Foundation and the Nebraska
4-H Ambassadors have joined together to start a
program which recognizes 4-H clubs throughout
the state of Nebraska. Any 4-H club may
nominate themselves to be the Club of the
Month. Nominations are due the second Friday
of the month before the club will be the Club of
the Month. The chosen club will receive a $50
cash card from the Nebraska 4-H Foundation
and their story will be showcased on the
Nebraska 4-H Foundation's Facebook, Twitter,
and website along with the State 4-H website
and Facebook and in their local newspaper.

Statewide 4-H Cat Club
Nebraska 4-H recently started a 4-H statewide cat
club, which meets once a month on the second
Thursday of the month via an online platform. The
next meeting is Thursday, April 14.

Standard of Excellence NCTA
Livestock Judging Camp
May 25, 2016
Open to all youth ages 8 to 18 years old, 4-H and
non 4-H members. Youth are also invited the
following day to participate in the Nebraska
Extension’s Youth Animal Science Field Day (see
above). For your convenience, those participating
both days can register for an overnight stay in the
resident halls on NCTA’s campus in Curtis, NE.

Quality Assurance 2016
All 4-Her’s enrolled in market and breeding beef,
bucket calf, feeder calf, cow/calf, dairy, dairy and
meat goat, market and breeding sheep, swine, rabbit
and poultry projects are required to complete
Quality Assurance. The online QA Moodle Course
is available at http://campuus.extension.org. Cost is
$5.00 payable online. Instructions to complete are
at http://extension.unl.edu/statewide/madison/4h/
Each exhibitor is required to
complete three modules. When
complete, print your certificates
and turn them into the Extension
office. This is due by June 17.
4-H HORSE INFORMATION
District and State Horse
Packets WILL be sent next
week to all age eligible 4-H
members. Please have all
forms and fees to the office by
May 13.
NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED!
Horse Level Testing
Those competing at district or state horse shows
must have Level II testing completed by Thursday,
April 28. Please call the office to arrange a time to
take the written portion of the test.
All horse exhibitors planning to show at the
Madison County Fair must have their Level I
advancement level testing done to compete at
County Fair. This can be done at any time of the
year. Contact the office to set a time to take the
written test. Skills test must be set up with a
certified club leader.
Leaders
All leaders who give the skills portion of the Level
I and Level II advancement level tests will be
required to take a certification course in order to
give these test. The course is located at http://
campus.extension.org/ . Once you arrive at that
site, search the courses for:
Nebraska Advancement Level Youth
Leader Certification.
When you complete this, please let Sarah know so
we can add you to the list for Madison County.

Spring Trail Challenge Clinic
Saturday, May 28, 9:00 a.m .at
Maskenthine Recreation Area in
Stanton County
Geared toward the recreational rider and
formulated for ALL equine breeds, the trail
challenge is devoted to building and
improving equine/rider partnerships. The
ability to work as a team and to navigate
different obstacles, which a rider may
encounter on the trail, will enhance the
trust horse and rider have for each other.
Developing this partnership through an
educational experience will help make
riding safe, fun, and more pleasurable. The
obstacles will be elective and assistance
will be provided by AQHA Recreational
Advisor, Larry O. Voecks in a clinic format
where you can participate or just observe.
Registration fee of $5.00 is payable in
advance or on site to Sarah from the
Madison County Extension Office.
Participants are encouraged to make
advance reservations as space is limited.
