The Madeira River Complex is a mega-project in Brazil's western Amazon.
Two huge hydroelectric dams – Santo Antônio (3,150 MW) and Jirau (3,750 MW) Cost: US$ 15 billion
The Rio Madeira HVDC System is a HVDC Transmission System in Brazil, built to export power from the new hydro power plants on the Madeira River in the Amazon Basin to the major load centres of
southeastern.
The system consists of two converter stations at Porto Velho - RO and Araraquara - SP, interconnected by two bipolar ±600 kV DC overhead lines with a capacity of 3,150 megawatts each and 2,385 km.
Cost: US$ 1.8 billion
A 800 MW back-to-back station in Porto Velho is also part of the system. Hence the total export capacity of the Porto Velho station is 7,100 MW: 6,300 MW from the two bipoles and 800 MW from the two back-to-
back converters.

Interlocutor between different transmission agents;

- experience in HVDC systems
- neutral viewpoint (impartiality)
State of the art to rebuild the new electrode (several groups involved);- geophysical research for the electrode site selection based on shallow (Wenner) and deep (Magnetotelluric) surveys
RTDS is the main tool for validation tests before commissioning;
Avoid OHL C1 and C2 connected on Bipole 1 (P1 and P2) (option would be the same bidding);

NEGATIVE ASPECTS
Lack of data, unclear definition of responsibilities and ambiguous requirements of ANEEL Auction;
Absence of specific requirements for joint operation;
Difficulty in exchanging models and important information between the manufacturers due to confidentiality;
The factors above caused many times long-running discussions, re-design during the project and sometimes contractual conflicts.
