Along with Namibia, Botswana is one of Africa'smost unpopulated wildernesses. The country’senviable conservation philosophy, straight fromPresident Ian Khama, endorses low-volume, high-revenue tourism, and significant measurablebenefits for communities who live among the wildanimals.

There are a handful (about 45) small, fixed tentedcamps and a few mobile safari camps in theBotswana wilderness. The largest hold no morethan 23 guests, but most take 12. These remoteand exclusive camps mean that you're unlikely tosee any other travellers out on game drives orwalks.

This is vastly different to Kenya’s Maasai Mara,or Tanzania’s Ngorangoro Crater, for instance,where there are often a number of safari vehiclesaround any sighting, and safari 'traffic' is a realthing.

Safaris in Botswana can be one of four types, or amix of types: luxury lodge safaris, mobilecamping safaris, adventure safaris, and self-drivesafaris. All four are suitable for children, anditineraries can be structured around the needs ofyour family.

LODGESAFARIS

The intimate lodges in Botswana offer understatedluxury, small numbers of guests, and some of thebest guides and trackers in Africa. In the Delta,most lodges are situated on private concessions,which means that you'll have access to a numberof activities, like guided game walks, mokoroexcursions, and night game drives.

Due to the fact that tourism is strictly regulatedand Botswana is an exclusive safari destination,prices may appear higher than elsewhere inAfrica. It's important to remember though that thesafari experience is unfailingly high quality, andmost lodges are in very remote parts of thecountry, often accessible only by light aircraft.

Game viewing is excellent year round in Botswana, but manypeople regard May to September the best time to visit. Theseare the winter months (and the dry season), and temperaturesare moderate, there is almost no rain, and animals areconcentrated around water sources.

Wildlife tends to disperse during the rainy January to Aprilperiod (the 'green season'), but several destinations offerexcellent game viewing during this time, as they are in thepath of migrating animals.

Places to witness the wonder of the migration include Chobe'sSavute region and Botswana's Kalahari parks - Nxai Pan,Makgadikgadi Pans and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.December is a particularly good month as many antelope droptheir young during this time, which means a great chance ofexceptional predator sightings.
