Atelier is borne of a singular vision: to celebrate the heritage of the past with the style and comfort of contemporary Sydney village living. A luxurious retreat for those who appreciate quality, Atelier is where café culture and neighbourhood living are revitalised for a new generation of village dwellers.

The elegant, authentic architecture is timeless. Part conversion of the raw brick and chimney kilns of the former Gina’s Bakery and part cutting-edge style, it fuses old and new to wonderful effect. The building has its own presence yet feels very much part of the neighbourhood. It is created with deep respect for what has gone before, promising an individual response to Leichhardt’s heritage fabric.

A lush courtyard invites greenery into Atelier’s heart providing welcoming pause points and lovely vistas from within the residences. Overhead, a view-filled roof garden offers both space to gather and spectacular Sydney-wide vistas .

These stunning new residences are brought to life by Ceerose, the award winning team that built Hyde Park’s Eliza and Pyrmont’s Harbour Mill, a repurposed flour mill that similarly weaves the grandeur of industrial-age architecture with tailor-made modern living. Ceerose are committed to creating a benchmark for Leichhardt, a village they’ve held strong ties to over several years.

It is a passion project for Ceerose founder, Edward Doueihi, devoted to creatively retaining and keeping true to the memory of Sydney’s past.

In collaboration, a curated team of leading architects, designers and artisans are creating crafted spaces that are much more than the sum of their parts. They are beautiful, liveable and of the highest quality.

Surrounded by the buzz of vibrant village life, Atelier links the suburb across a century of change to create one-of-a-kind homes, tailor-made with an artisan’s attention to detail and flair.

I believe in preserving as much as possible of our heritage, our old buildings, and our working past. Families living here

have passed down their history and their craft from generation to generation. It’s important to respect that, to make

something special and leave a legacy.

Atelier is an inspiring space in which to live, relax and entertain. The striking building and its residences have been built with true character and style.Seen from the outside, rich natural brickwork and industry-inspired metal tie the former working bakery into Atelier’s new contemporary form ensuring a line of continuity between past and present.

From the upper level residences, superb views of the city provide a magical Sydney backdrop while Atelier’s central open garden draws light, air and pleasant green outlooks into the heart of the homes.

Everything feels handmade, crafted and authentic. Stunning concrete or herringbone parquetry floors flow underfoot. Italian stone and artisan-sourced tiles reflect the suburb’s Italian heritage and flavour. Magnificent slate-look kitchens and wide stone island benches marry form and function, perfect for entertainers.

Inside, Atelier offers a welcoming sense of luxury. The interiors are meticulously realised with an emphasis on materials and craftsmanship in elements big and small. The feel is boutique, upmarket and distinctive. They reveal a kind of high-end sensitivity and sensibility that is a first for Leichhardt.

Six majestic penthouses take pride of place at Atelier’s upper levels. Sitting on a rise at Leichhardt’s highest point they capture elevated views all the way to Sydney Harbour Bridge. Tactile finishes such as the precision-made parquetry floors play upon notions of heritage while adding texture and warmth.

Iron bronze or matt gold tapware and grainy walnut veneers create a luxuriously bespoke living environment where nothing is overlooked. All combine to produce imaginative, generous and authentic spaces with a special sense of place.

Leichhardt is more than a suburb – it’s a true village filled with friendly faces and a lively community spirit. This is Sydney’s Little Italy, home to generations of migrant families. Its local streets are rich in history, embedded with a strong artisan culture and authentic charm.

Unlike many Sydney suburbs, Leichhardt’s cafés, restaurants, fine food stores and bakeries have grown organically on the main shopping street and down leafy side streets, unfettered by the predictability of shopping centres. The aroma of roasted coffee and panini fills the air, while streets are meant for strolling. Always vibrant, Leichhardt’s shops, boutiques, delis and eateries all buzz with the atmosphere of a neighbourhood local.

Queues line up at AC Butchery for Sydney’s finest meat and game sausages, made on the premises. Produce stores are filled with shoppers piling up baskets with market-fresh wares while family-run restaurants still serve homemade pasta and “nonna” treats.

Head out any weekend morning and you’ll see a regular crowd out sipping espresso and reading the papers from alfresco tables or getting out in the fresh air in one of the suburb’s many pocket parks.

Most of the action occurs on busy Norton Street where pavement cafés provide street-side venues for people-watching set against the buzz and hiss of gleaming espresso machines.

In recent years, newcomers have joined the old stalwarts. Dog owners now treat their pooches to pupachinos at Café Bones and a former pastry chef from Tetsuya’s and Sepia has set up shop with Penny Fours on Norton Street.

Complementing the neighbourhood’s gourmet charms, independent bookstores such as Berkalow Books feed the mind while, in the evenings, cinephiles flock to the Palace Cinema for a wine on the balcony before catching a movie.

Flourishing with life and proud of its heritage, Leichhardt is a credit to previous generations who settled here and made it what it is today.

I have had my business in the same shop in Leichhardt for 49 years and I live here too. I’m in my 60s now but

I am still passionate about what I do. I really love it. I can’t imagine being anywhere but Leichhardt.

Transformative projects along Parramatta Road will soon change the face of the Inner West’s principal artery and revitalise Leichhardt’s southern gateway. The NSW state budget has set aside $123 million to create new village-style urban plazas, express bus lanes and cycleways along the length of the 20-kilometre corridor. Eight new rejuvenated centres are planned along Parramatta Road’s spine to complement existing suburbs, including here in Leichhardt.

All this is made possible by construction of the 33 kilometre WestConnex motorway, now well underway. The $16.8 billion project is expected to divert up to 50,000 cars a day underground, making room for a substantial facelift.

There are 32 projects in the program including new or extended parks in Auburn and Five Dock, new cycling connections to Pyrmont Bridge Road, a pocket park in Petersham Street next to busy Crystal Street, plus general streetscape upgrades across the Inner West.

A new urban plaza is planned along Parramatta Road, just across from Norton Street. It will create more open space and a marker to the southern entry of the suburb. Parramatta Road will become a more attractive place and easier to walk along with new street tree planting, pavement treatments and public art enlivening key spaces.

Small shop frontages will be home to a mix of different stores and services, and new economic strategies will attract small businesses.

With its excellent access to Sydney CBD, Leichhardt will evolve into a more vibrant and active centre allowing more people to take advantage of Norton Street’s culture.

Rejuvenation aims to activate the area with greater opportunities for enterprise and more people-friendly streetscapes that will revitalise and add real character to the wider Leichhardt precinct.

Leichhardt is a blank canvass for younger business start-ups, so it’s an exciting place for businesses like ours to be. I also like the family-friendly feel and the way that everyone is

welcome here. You don’t have to be a trend-setter to hang out in Leichhardt; it’s a ‘come as you are’ suburb.

Just five kilometres from Sydney CBD, Leichhardt is part of the city’s prized circle of Inner West suburbs. Between the sparkling harbour at one end and Parramatta Road at the other, the neighbourhood is increasingly in-demand as one of Sydney’s perfect postcodes.

As locals know, there’s more than just great eating. Every convenience of desirable city living sits on its doorstep.

Stroll down to the suburb’s northern fringe and you’ll be rewarded with Sydney’s beautiful harbour and the famous Bay Run that skirts the foreshore. There are pretty walking trails and great local parks for playing sports, exercise, and off-leash play for pets.

There’s even a premier aquatic centre for training or a cool splash in summer offering swimming lessons and pools for the little ones.

This is a neighbourhood that cares about family so you’ll find many excellent child care centres, kindergartens and schools. Those seeking tertiary study are also well served by Leichhardt’s proximity and easy links to the University of Sydney.

Neighbouring sister suburbs of the Inner West are great for a change of pace or atmosphere with beautiful Balmain, Lilyfield, eclectic Marrickville and high energy Newtown all within close proximity.

Market Place Shopping Centre has all the everyday essentials such as Woolworths and K-Mart, complementing the many gourmet family grocery stores and village shops.

For travel further afield, the City West Link, Parramatta Road, numerous bus routes and multiple light rail stops ensure that the suburb is easily accessible to the city and surrounds.

Right on the CBD fringe, Leichhardt is enriched by its connections. Close to Sydney’s big city attractions, this feel-right-at-home village puts everything a short stroll, cycle or ride from your door.
