IndetailTJisatough,volatilemantorturedbyhisownsoul.Fleeingalifeofurbanchaosinthecity,andwithfewotheroptions,TJsetsoutona2,000‐kilometrejourneynorthtotheremoteKimberleytownofFiveRiverstofind13‐year‐oldBullet,thesonhehasnevermet.IntheruggedKimberly,TJlockshornswithlocalpoliceofficerTexas,whohasfamilytroublesweighingheavilyuponhim.Hehasjustdrivenhisgrandson‐Bullet‐toaboys’campinthebushtosavehimfrombeinglockedupafterhelitadangerousfireinFiveRivers.Fiercelyprotectiveofhiscommunity,Texasdoesn'tlikethelookofTJanddoesn'twanthiminhistown.HehastofighttokeepalidonhisangerwhenherealisesthatTJfatheredBullet.Afteryearsofpartying,Bullet’smotherNellahasnowcleanedupherlife,butstillfeelsrealresentmenttowardsTJduetohislongabsence.Thisfuelshisvolatility.ButNelladoesn'tstandinthewayofBullet,whenhereturnsfromthebushcamp,gettingtoknowhisfather‐sheknowsthisiswhathersonwants.EventuallyTJ'soldwayssurfaceandhisangerboilsover,sparkingameltdowninBullet.Texasisfuriousandthetwohugemenclashviolently,outontheendlessRiverRiversfloodplain.TexasoffersabeatenandbloodyTJthechanceforredemptionandheaccepts…decidingtostayinthecommunitywithhisfamily.

ItallstartedwithafishingtripIn1996BrendanfoundhimselftalkingonthephoneforthefirsttimetoStephenPigram,oneofthesevenbrothersthatmakeupThePigramBrothers."Iheardtheywerelookingforsomemusicvideos,"Brendanrecalls."IrememberStevesaying'Wecan'taffordtopayyouandIcan'tevenputyouupinahotelbecauseIonlyliveinatinshed,butwecouldtakeyoufishing’.LongbeforeIknewanythingaboutanythingIlovedfishingandcamping,soIwasin.Duringthetripweconceived,shotandcuttwomusicvideosintwoweeksandtheyarestilltwoofthebestthingsI'veeverdone."Brendangrewupthousandsofkilometresawayinawhitemiddle‐classfamilyintheheartofSydney,Australia'sbiggestcity.Hehadnooldersiblings."IwastwoyearsyoungerthantheyoungestPigrambrotherandsuddenlyIhadnineolderbrothers(twoarenotintheband).Meetingthemwaswhentheworldchangedforme.MyrelationshipwithAustraliachanged:Icrossedtotheothersideandneverreallycameback."TheKimberleyisnowBrendan'ssecondhomeandhehascreatedarangeofmusic‐orientatedproductionsforandwith"thepiggies",includingseveraldocumentaries,inspirationaleducationalresourcesforyoungpeopleinoutbackcommunities,andKulliFoot,acriticallyacclaimed10‐minutedramashownonABCTV.DavidJowseywasanExecutiveProduceratABCTVatthetimeandhecommissionedanumberoftheearlydocumentarycollaborationsbetweenBrendanandthePigrambrothersfortelevision,Thesemenwereamoviewaitingtohappen"AgainandagainIwouldmeetmenwhohadincredibletoughnessandalsoacompellingpresence,"saysBrendanabouthisearlyyearsinthisfrontierofAustralia."AroundthecampfiretheytoldamazingstoriesabouttheirlivesandlaterI'dhearjusthowwildtheyusedtobe.ButIknewthemasmenwhohadn'thadadrinkfor20years."Heknewstarpowerwhenhesawit:in2001heco‐directedthefeature‐lengthdocumentaryTexaswithRussellCrowe,afilmaboutCrowe’sbandThirtyOddFootOfGrunt."Ithoughtthatifthesemencouldacttheywereamoviewaitingtohappen,soIstartedwritingastoryaroundthemthatIfeltcapturedthatworld."IamreallyproudofthismoviemostofallbecauseitdoesjusticetothetoughmenofTheKimberleywhohavetransformedtheirlivesbytemperingtheirwildnessandchannelingtheirstrengthintotheirkids,theirfamilies,theircommunities.Ifindthatveryrealandveryinspiring."

Givingupalcoholwasoftenthecatalyst.ColonizationfirsterodedtraditionalAboriginallawandculture;alcoholfurthererodedit.Butalcoholisaprobleminmanysocietiesthroughouttheworld,notjustinAboriginalsocieties.ThereisaculturalunderpinningtoMadBastards;andasubtletythatgoesmuchdeeperthanthestory,thatonlyKimberleypeoplemayunderstand."There'ssomethingupherethatAboriginalpeoplehave:amagic,asixthsense,aconnectedness,"saysAlan."UncleBlackrepresentsitinthefilmbutitwasoneofthehardestthingstogetintothemoviebecauseitisnotphysical."Thefilmwasmadeorganically,collaboratively.BrendanrecordedhoursandhoursofstoriesovermanyyearsashetravelledupanddownTheKimberleywiththePigrams.Theyallfedintothefilm.Withthehelpofmanyconfidantesandcollaborators,graduallyanarrativetookshape.Brendandidn'tsetouttomakeafather‐and‐sonstorybutthat'swhatitbecame.Hewouldreaddraftsofthescriptaloudtothemen,mothers,aunties,kids,andwhoeverelsewasaroundthecampfireatthetime.Hewasrigorousaboutmakingittruetotheplaceandthepeople."Itwasneveranoptionformetowriteamoviescriptandgetpeopletoactinit,"saysBrendan."ItisnotinterestingwhatIthought.ItwasaboutwhatthementhatImetinTheKimberleythought,whathadhappenedtothem,whattheywantedtomakeamovieabout.""AmateofminetoldBrendantocomeandseemeandallIknewwasthathewantedtohearrealstoriesfromTheKimberley,notprettiedupones,"saysGreg,whowascastinthestarringroleofpoliceofficerTexasbecauseofthestrengthofascreentest."Weallhadapartinhowthemoviewasmade.AlongthewayBrendanwouldaskusallquestionsaboutthedirectionhewantedtotakethescript."Whenotherkeycastcameonboard,theytooaddedlifeexperiencesthatwerealreadyetchedontheirfaces.DeanDaly‐JonescanrememberbeinggivenawoodentoyoneChristmasbyhismother'sthenboyfriend.AtthebeginningofMadBastardshischaracter,TJ,goestothejailtovisithisbrother,whohasmadeawoodentoyforhissonandwantsTJtodeliverit.Onamuchlargerscale,thetransformationtheaudienceexpectsfromTJbytheendofthefilm,mirrorsthetransformationDeanstillsometimesstruggleswith."IonlybecameamanwhenIaddressedmydemonsaboutthreeyearsagobutthedevilwasstilltrailingme,"saysDean."Friendsandfamilysayitisamazingwhatthefilmhasdoneforme.WhenIhearpeoplebeingracistnowItalktothem,nottrytobeattheirheadsinasIoncewouldhave.

"IamaproudNyoongarmanandwhenBrendanapproachedmeIhadtoreadthescriptbecauseIwasn'tgoingtogetinvolvedinsomethingthatwouldexploitusblackfellasorhaveapoor‐fellow‐metone.TJhashitrockbottombutisstrivingtogetbackonhisfeet.Itisapositivestory.Alotofpeoplearen'teducatedanddon'treadbuttheywatchmovies."LucasYeeda,whoplaystheyoungestofthefilm'smadbastards,alsomadeamajorcontributiontothescript.Onedayaftercallingaction,Brendansuddenlyrealizedhehadn'tthoroughlybriefedLucasaboutwhathischaractershouldsay.Itwasasceneinvolvingagroupofwaywardboyswhowerebeingtakenonacampsotheycouldreconnectwiththeircultureandcountry.Withthecamerasrolling,JohnWatson,anelder,askedeachoftheminturnwhattroubletheyhadgotinto.'Ilitafire,'werethewordsLucaschosetoputinBullet'smouth.Onthestrengthofthis,BrendanlaterfilmedLucassettingfiretoabuildingwithaMolotovcocktailandthesedramaticnight‐timescenesopenthefilm.ImprovisationisanecessityinTheKimberleyAfteryearsofwritingandplanning,camerasrolledinJune2009.MostofthefilmingoccurredinTheKimberley,a400,000squarekilometreregioninthenorthwestcornerofAustralia.Itisthousandsofmilestothenearestcapitalcityandisverysparselypopulated."BeingbornintoanisolatedplacelikeTheKimberley,withlittleinfrastructure,meansyouareusedtoimprovisingandfendingforyourself,"saysStephenPigram.HisbrotherAlan,forexample,madeseveralofthecamerarigsanddolliesusedonthefilmfrommaterialshehadlyingaround.Everybodychippedinanddideverything:Alanwasaproducer,acomposerandthegrip,butcouldoftenbefoundweldinghishandiwork.Thereweretwosignificantperiodsoffilmingwithsixmonthsofeditingandre‐scriptingbetweenthemtoensurethatthestorybeingtoldandthewayitwasbeingtoldwasauthentic.Muchofwhatwassaidonsetwerenotwordssetinstoneinascript,butwordsthatreflectedwhattheactorsknewwastheintentionofthescenefromtheworkshopsandrehearsals."OnsetBrendanwouldsometimesaskme'Doesthatlooklikehowarealpersonwouldreact?'saysGreg."WheneverIwasactinginasceneIwouldspeaktotheotheractorsandgivethemapeptalk,tellingthemtopretendthecamerawasn'tthere,tonottryandbesomeone,tojustbethemselves."TheimprovisedfilmingprocesswasbothexcitingandnervewrackingforproducerDavidJowsey–“butonceIsawtheperformancesintherushesIknewwehadsomethingauthenticandpowerful”

DeanDaley­Jones►TJ,fatherofBullet,urbandrifterAtthetimeDeanwascastasTJ,hewasworkinginthebuildingindustryinBroomeasalaborerandroofer.HemovedtoBroomeinTheKimberleytoescapethelaw.Hehadworkedonfilmsets,butprincipallyasagrip,andheapproachedMadBastardsinthehopeofbeinghiredagainasagrip.Eventuallythecreativeteamrealizedthataleadingmanwasundertheirnoses.MadBastardsisDean'sfirstsignificantactingrole,althoughheplayed"oneofthelittleshitsthatwererapists"inthe1988featureShameandhasdonesomemodelingandcommercials.Hehassignedwithanagentsincemakingthefilm."Mymotherwaswhiteandranawayfromhomewhenshewas15yearsofageandwaslookedafterbyblackfellasontheoutskirtsofPerth,"saysDean."ShelovedAboriginalpeopleandsawthepainoftheiroppression.Shetaughtmemoreaboutblackpeoplethananyoneandtaughtmetowalktall."YETBythetimehereachedhislate20shisattemptstoliveinbothworldsfailedandheturnedtocrime.Deanwas10yearsoldwhenhisindigenousfatherdied.Hismothersubsequentlymarriedherfirsthusband'shalfbrother.Deangrewupbeingteasedandcalled"ahalf‐caste".Herecalleddifficulttimesinhisownlifeinordertodeliveranauthenticperformance.Itmadethefilmmentallydrainingandemotionallychallenging."IcanrememberpeoplespittingatmymotherbecauseshewaswithacolouredmanandIconjuredupsomeofthosebad,sadstorieswhenIhadtocryinthefilm,"saysDean."Ididn'twanttouseeyedrops.'Justgiveme10minutes,'I'dtellBrendan.ItwasthehardestjobIhaveeverdoneinmylife,psychologically."Butitwasanenormouslypositiveexperiencetoo:"Thefilmalsomademewanttobeatruefathertomyownson.AttimesitwastediousbeingonsetbutthenIwouldtellmyselfthatthiswasthegreatestthingIhaveeverdonebecauseIamrepresentingmypeople.Itwaspoliticalforme."
