Inside this issue:
Where is the snow this year? Last week the snow arrived but with it came
frigid temperatures and we had to have indoor recesses. Hopefully, with
the warmer temperature this week, the snow will not disappear too quickly
and the students will be able to play outside in the snow with shovels and
snow blocks. We hope everyone has a wonderful Family Day on February
18th.
Atlantic Salmon Classroom Hatchery Program
Our grade 4-8 students have worked with Ontario Ponds and Streams to
plant over 800 trees and shrubs at the corner of Centreville Creek Road and
King Street. We are excited to work with them once again in a fish hatch-
ery program. A salmon fish hatchery kit was assembled in Mrs. Dacres’
grade one/two class. They will learn about habitat, stewardship, and biodi-
versity. We hope students take back their experiences to their families and
community.
Itinerant Contact Team
An itinerant contact team worked at Macville January 15—18. The team
consists of a Special Education Teacher and Behaviour Teaching Assistant.
Students worked with the team in an interactive workshop to develop an un-
derstanding of empathy. Building strong, positive and supportive relation-
ships is at the heart of Character Education.
Buses
Students need to be at their bus stops at least 10 minutes before the
scheduled arrival for the bus. Do not wait at the house until the bus arrives.
Buses cannot stop to wait for a student to walk down the driveway to board
the bus.
Retirement
My retirement date of March 31st, 2013 has been approved by the Peel
District School Board. I have had five wonderful years at Macville and so
many fond memories to think back on. In March, I will connect with you all
again to thank you for your support, friendship and amazing children.
Mrs. Penty
It is time once again to start thinking about KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR
SEPTEMBER 2013. Children born in 2009 are now eligible for full day Junior Kindergarten be-
ginning in September 2013. A special Pre-registration Survey has been sent home. If you have
a child born in 2009 or know of anyone else, perhaps a neighbour or a friend, who may have a
child who is ready for kindergarten in the fall, please fill out the form and return it to the
school office or pass the form along to someone who has a child who will be registering for Sep-
tember. Please remember that you have to live within the school's catchment area to register
at Macville. Check with the office if you are not sure if your address is in our area.
Our REGISTRATION DAYS will be
FEBRUARY 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th
9:00—3:00
Additional hours—5:00—8:00—Feb. 7th only
What to bring:
proof of child's age and Immigration Status

utility bill with your name and address

awarded by a court to a guardian

mended immunization schedule in Ontario, to protect against the following:
* Diphtheria * mumps
* Polio * red measles
* rubella (German measles) * tetanus
The required immunization forms must be complete before your child will be allowed to attend class.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Important Information about immunization
In order to attend school in Ontario, your child must have an up-to-
date immunization record. When you register your child for school,
you will provide a copy of your child’s immunization record and the
school will send it to Peel Health. After registration, keeping your
child’s records up-to-date is your responsibility. Peel Health reviews
immunization records regularly. Students who are not completely
immunized and do not have a valid exemption may not be allowed to
attend school.
For information about immunization, or to get a copy of your child’s
record call Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700; Caledon residents can
call toll-free at 905-584-2216. Translation services are available.

The 'Forest of Reading Program' is underway once again! This program involves all primary
students, J-Com, and I-Com classes and many students in the Junior and Intermediate Divisions
for a total of 193 participants. The program will run from January to April. Voting will take
place in late April.
A big Thank You to our wonderful and supportive Macville School Council for fully funding the
purchase of all the books for the various reading programs (Blue Spruce, Silver Birch, Silver
Birch Express and Red Maple) from Kindergarten through to Grade 8 !
Just a reminder for students to please return borrowed library books on time and in good
condition.
Once again Mrs. Leupolt would welcome new and/or gently used books for the library. If you are
cleaning up and cleaning out, please remember that the school would love to have your quality
book donations…
HAPPY READING, EVERYONE!

Action plan provides roadmap for equitable hiring, promotion at Peel board
Research-based plan will “transform” work of board in equitable hiring
A new action plan, The Journey Ahead, will transform the work of the Peel District School Board in
equitable hiring and promotion. The detailed action plan will help create a more diverse workforce at all
levels of the organization. It is based on extensive research by an external firm with significant and spe-
cific expertise in the area of diversity hiring.
Notes Director of Education Tony Pontes, “It’s critically important that we immediately take action on the research report. We have developed and will implement The Journey Ahead: Our Action Plan for
Equitable Hiring and Promotion in Peel. This detailed action plan directly addresses the findings
from the research. It will ensure that our work in the area of equitable hiring and promotion is bias-
free, deliberate, planned, systematic and consistent with our goals, policies and mission. The Journey
Ahead action plan will transform the work of the Peel District School Board in equitable hiring.”
One of the board’s key goals is to “attract, develop and retain a diverse staff of committed, dedicated
and caring people.” Explains Pontes, “The Journey Ahead turns our goal into action, with immediate changes, defined timelines, clear transparency and public accountability. It’s a roadmap to help us
achieve our goal of ensuring a highly qualified, diverse workforce.”
In January 2012, the board’s Diversity Leadership Council—composed of staff and community repre-
sentatives reflecting the five groups identified in the Human Rights Code—recommended a review of
the board’s hiring and promotion practices. To ensure that the research was neutral, a company with
significant and specific expertise in the area of diversity hiring, Turner Consulting Group Inc., was hired to conduct the research and develop the research report. The consultants reviewed policies and
documents, reviewed competition files, conducted focus groups with staff, interviewed individual staff
and leaders, and invited all staff to participate in an online questionnaire.
The research report provides the context and data based on this extensive process and provides find-
ings to strengthen the board’s hiring and promotion processes in three priority areas:
Ensure equitable hiring processes
Ensure an equitable academic promotion process
Diversity and Inclusion
The Journey Ahead action plan defines specific actions for the 33 findings in the three priority areas, and sets a timeline for completion. Recommendations, which are subject to budget, will be brought for-
ward to the board separately.
Adds Pontes, “This action plan is ambitious, and the journey may be challenging, but this work is
absolutely necessary and will be done. The Journey Ahead action plan will help us to achieve our
mission: to inspire success, confidence and hope in each student. I stand behind the plan, with a
commitment to our staff and community that we will do more to ensure a diverse workforce at all levels
of the organization that is reflective of our community. This plan clearly defines the journey to reach that destination.”
The Journey Ahead Action Plan and the research report can be found online at www.peelschools.org.

Breakfast Program
The Lice Squad visiting Macville Public School on February 21st
Have your child’s head checked on February 21st for only $2.00. Let’s all work together
to keep our children in a lice free environment and stop those annoying itchy lice from
spreading. Sponsored and arranged by Macville School Council.
Through the use of songs,
and stories, Paul talked
about strategies for dealing
with bullies and positive
character building.
Paul provided an interactive
presentation that was age
appropriate for students.
This was presented in two
sessions—one for grade k to
3 followed by grades 4 to 8.
PAUL BEHNKE
PRESENTATION
On February 7th, Earth Rangers will back at Macville P.S. for students in Grade 1-6.
Earth Rangers is a live school eco-presentation that inspires and educates kids about the impact we have
on all living species and their habitats and the importance of making responsible choices
Did you know...
60% of the world's ecosystems have been degraded
50% of the world's forests are gone
67% of the world's wetlands are gone
1.5 billion hectares of ocean floor habitats are destroyed every year
In Canada, 13 species have already gone extinct and over 400 are listed as species at risk

What Does Macville Collect?
Pop can tabs
Ms. King has spear-headed a campaign to collect your pop can tabs. These tabs can be re-cycled into metal used for new wheel-chairs. Tabs go into a large container out-side the office.
Gently Used Books, Skates and
Helmets.
Please send these into the school.
Zehrs Receipts
For every $1,000 spent at Zehrs, Macville will get $0.04. It might not sound like much but imagine the potential if many families participate. You can drop off your receipts at the office. Thanks to Mrs. Bartucci for collecting and submitting these receipts.
Used printer cartridges
Used cell phones
Support Macville’s Greener School Initiative. Don’t let old print cartridges and cell phones fill up landfills. Bring them in to the office and they will be recycled. Macville earns money for these items. Thanks to the Palmer family for helping Macville with such a valuable program.
Cut out this list and stick it on your fridge!
