Welcome to Level 3 Physics, 2017. … A robust, academic course that lays the foundation for Tertiary study as well as a lot of fun kicking around the ideas that underpin the Universe. We will cover… EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS What depends on what? What else matters? What kind of relationship is there? WAVES Why does a siren drop in pitch when it goes past? How can you use harmonics to tune your guitar? What happens if you wire one of your speakers backwards? MECHANICS Collisions. Swinging things around. Satellites. Your parent’s record collection. Olympic Divers. Tides. MODERN PHYSICS E = mc 2 . Fission and Fusion. Photons. Neon lights. Is lights a particle? Are we a wave? ELECTRICITY Is that battery flat? How does my radio know which station to play? The Cook Straight Cable. Phone chargers. It is expected that in coming to this course you will have a good understanding of L2 Physics and L2 Mathematics. If you feel this is NOT you, please quietly let me know TODAY so we can gracefully find another course for you.

EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS What depends on what? What else matters? What kind of relationship is there?

WAVESWhy does a siren drop in pitch when it goes past? How can you use harmonics to tune your guitar? What happens if you wire one of your speakers backwards?

MECHANICSCollisions. Swinging things around. Satellites. Your parent’s record collection.Olympic Divers. Tides.

MODERN PHYSICSE = mc2. Fission and Fusion. Photons. Neon lights. Is lights a particle? Are we a wave?

ELECTRICITYIs that battery flat? How does my radio know which station to play? The Cook Straight Cable. Phone chargers.

It is expected that in coming to this course you will have a good understanding of

L2 Physics and L2 Mathematics. If you feel this is NOT you, please quietly let

me know TODAY so we can gracefully find another course for you.

Assessment and reassessmentThe Level 3 Physics course has one internally assessed and three externally assessed Standards.

Standards assessed externally will have tests at the end of each topic. They will also be assessed in the practice exam in Term Three. Both these assessments provide a grade for your report and will be used if you need compassionate assessment. You should revise for these and take them seriously. External assessments will take place in November.

There is ONLY ONE assessment opportunity for the internal Standard (Modern Physics, 3.5), around the last week of term 1. Make it count. No re-assessments.

Rules and RegulationsThere are some very specific rules about assessments. Please refer to your NCEA handout, particularly about the ownership of work and plagiarism.

Stationary Clearfile or folder for handouts. Paper. Calculator. KEEP THEM ORDERLY.Year 13 Physics Course Manual (ordered through class). These are compulsory.

HomeworkRegular homework improves your grades. You will be given a small amount of homework each night that must be done before the next Physics lesson. If there is a valid reason why this cannot occur on any given night, your homework book must be signed by parent or caregiver. Otherwise you may be kept in during lunch or interval.YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SUCEED IN THIS COURSE WITHOUT COMPLETING WORK IN YOUR OWN TIME.

TutorialsIf you need extra help with a topic, homework assignment or labs, please see me right away. If you don’t understand something, talk to me before you go home that day. I am available for a tutorial almost any time with a little notice.

Laboratory workThis year there is a large focus on doing practical work, perfecting laboratory skills and planning your own experiments. While in the lab, I expect you to (1) follow all safety rules, (2) pay careful attention to oral and written instructions, and (3) take care of lab equipment. If you cannot follow those rules, then you will be removed from the lab and given bookwork to replace the lab experience.
