Protect Our Paws

Spring has sprung! We are enjoying the warmer weather

and sunshine here at Macon Elementary! Please consider the footwear your student will be wearing

during these warmer days. While open toe and/or open heel sandals and “flip-flops” seem like an easy

option, or the perfect compliment to that cute outfit, please consider these safety concerns associated

with them:

1. Little protection against potential injury -- Open toed shoes often catch on the playground

surface when the child is running. This results in scraped toes, and broken toenails. Open heeled

shoes commonly fall off during play, leading to splinters or other injuries. Blisters are common

with these shoes, and flip-flops commonly break.

2. Poor foot support -- Many sandals and flip-flops are made of thin plastic that do not support

growing feet.

3. Altered gait -- When your child wears flip-flops or other backless sandals, they grip the sole with

their toes to keep the sandals on their feet. This continued walking pattern results in shorter

steps and strain on the muscles in the legs and back.

Please avoid sending your child to school in sandals or flip-flops. (This applies to Summer School as

well). Students who do wear sandals or flip-flops to school should bring an extra pair of tennis shoes

and socks for outdoor recess and PE.

Thanks for your help!

Nurse Jenn

April Golden Palette Awards Each class has the possibility to earn 5 points each day in art class. The highest average points earns the Golden Palette for that month. The first point is the ready to learn point. (HABIT 2)Classes earn this by beginning with the end in mind , entering the classroom quietly so we can get started right away. The middle three points are earned by being proactive and

working quietly (HABIT 1), following directions while seeking first to understand before being understood (HABIT 5), and putting first things first (HABIT 3). The last point is our clean up point, and is earned through using synergy (HABIT 6) as a class effort to put things away and prepare the room for the next class.
