Biographical sketch :Noted lumberman and philanthropist H.R . MacMillan was born September 9, 1885 inOntario . He obtained a Master of Science degree in Forestry at Yale University in 1908and became Chief Forester for British Columbia in 1912 . During his tenure in theposition he created the B .C . Forest Service . He married Edna Mulloy in 1911 and theyhad two children . MacMillan served as Assistant Director of the Imperial MunitionsBoard during World War I and in 1919, shortly after the war had ended, he establishedthe H.R . MacMillan Export Company Ltd. When World War 11 broke out, he again tookon additional responsibilities as Timber Controller, Chairman ofthe WartimeRequirements Board, and then President of Wartime Merchant Shipping Ltd . In 1951 hiscompany merged with Bloedel, Stewart and Welch Ltd . to form MacMillan and BloedelLtd . After stepping down as chairman of the company in 1956, MacMillan continued tobe very active in the business . He died at age 90 on February 9, 1976 .

Scope and content :Collection consists of correspondence, warrants, commissions, printed ordinances, adeed, a financial statement, literary works, other documentary forms, and a sealpertaining to various figures and events in Canadian history . The collection is arrangedinto two series : Historical documents and manuscript material and Literary material .

Source of supplied title : The collection was donated to the University ofBritishColumbia by H.R . MacMillan in 1956 .
