Macmillan Cake Sale

On Friday 29th September Hassenbrook held their own Macmillan Cake Sale instead of the Macmillan Coffee Morning. It was a whirlwind of a half hour during lunchtime but so unbelievably successful.

We were overwhelmed with cake donations from both staff, students, parents and the public. The Canteen was buzzing with students and staff all there to help support this worthwhile cause.

As well as the cake sale, we had an ‘In Memory Of’ wall display where students and staff we able to write a little message in a star for any loved ones they have lost. It was a very moving site to see, so many of our students choosing to write a message.

The half hour lunchtime went so fast and before we knew it, it was over and we barely had any cakes left which is exactly what we wanted.

Overall we raised £163.76 for Macmillan Cancer Support and we couldn’t be happier with the support we got.

A massive thank you to Mrs Smith and her team of helpers for their dedication and hard work.

A Special Thanks

We would like to say a special thank you Carver’s Cupcakes and Mrs Gladstone, a parent of our students for going above and beyond with their generous donations to our Macmillan Cake Sale. Carver’s Cupcakes

donated the beautiful purple cupcakes that sold so quickly to all our staff, they didn't even make it to the cake table at lunchtime! And Mrs Gladstone for your really creative unicorn cupcakes that again, were sold before they even made it into the school building, let alone the table! We really appreciate your support and we can’t thank you enough.

Bully Stop

Our most important aim: To show respect to each other by the way we speak to and treat each other. If you have a problem: tell either a friend, teacher, parent or a trusted adult, telling about bullying is not ‘telling tales’ or ‘grassing’. Instead, report it online anonymously and email [email protected]. At Hassenbrook Academy students should enjoy a caring and safe environment. Be free from fear of humiliation, oppression, verbal, physical, social, sexual or racial abuse. We are committed to: identifying and dealing with any form of bullying, being proactive and taking action to stop bullying. If you have any questions then please contact the Academy.

Ortu Special in the Echo Newspaper

We are very excited to announce that Ortu Federation has a 16-page special in the Basildon Echo newspaper. This addition is something that we are very proud of and we feel that it shows exactly who we are as a Federation. There are articles and pictures from all four schools within the Federation, Ortu Corringham Primary School, Ortu Hassenbrook Academy, Ortu Gable Hall and Ortu Stanford and Corringham Sixth Form. If the Basildon Echo is delivered in your area, make sure you keep a look out for it. Although, all of our students were given a newspaper for free to take home. Therefore, please have a read through, we are proud of it!

Year 10 GCSE Art Trip to the National Portrait Gallery

On Thursday 21st September, I took the Year 10 GCSE Art and Design students on a trip to the National Portrait Gallery.

As part of their coursework, the students are to go to a gallery and study the art they see, commenting on what they think of it, what they like, etc. As well as this, they had to do at least four quick sketches of some of the portraits they had seen.

The National Portrait Gallery is a great staple in their coursework as it links so heavily to their coursework theme of Portraiture.

We saw some beautiful art and some that was slightly odd! But all the students did exactly as they were asked and some went above and beyond the task asked of them.

Every student behaved very well and our students did us and the academy proud. Mrs C Mitchell

Firework Safety

During the October Half Term, it is Bonfire Night. Every year there are hundred of accidents across the UK and a lot of them happen to children.

Fireworks are fun but can be very dangerous too, which is why safety is the most important thing when going to a display or when you let some firework off in your garden.

So remember to be safe, always stay at a distance from the fireworks, never touch a firework once it has been lit and don’t pick them up and put them in your pocket. Also, bare in mind that pets often get frightened of fireworks, so keep an eye out for them too. It’s ideal to keep your pets indoors, somewhere familiar and with the curtain closed. If you want to read more about Firework Safety head over to www.fireworkssafety.org.

And don’t forget to wrap up warm and have a good evening!

Year 11 Careers Trip

On Wednesday 4th October 2017, our Year 11 students attended the annual Opportunity Thurrock Careers Fair, held at the London Cruise Terminal, Tilbury Docks.

Whilst we were there, our students were able to access and speak with many professionals from the hundreds of exhibitors which attended this year. This included personnel from many Colleges, our Armed Forces, a whole variety of Universities from across the country, Inspire Thurrock Careers Team, plus so many more.

Whilst on their walkabouts, the students managed to collect bags full of prospectus, useful information and lots of free stationary!

Our students behaved impeccably throughout the duration of our stay and many comments were received from the exhibitors and general members of the public, on how very smart, courteous and well behaved our students were.

It was a pleasure taking our students to this event and seeing them in action, asking many important question relating to their futures. Well done Year 11!

Mrs T Smith

Trailblazers

Hassenbrook has been involved with Thurrock Trailblazers for some time now but we are hoping that this year and beyond we can increase our participation and in turn develop Arts across the Academy.

Thurrock Trailblazers is run by the Royal Opera House from their base in Purfleet. This year they are offering some exciting opportunities for our students to be involved in. In July we were sent a Cultural Catalogue from which to make our choices. This year our goal is to cover a range of events and ensure that we offer them across year groups from 7 to 10 and we try to get as many students involved as possible. In total we are aiming to have over 100 students from across the Academy taking part in the Thurrock Trailblazers programme. As always, we will keep you updated with the workshops that we take part in, so keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Mrs J Chappell

National Poetry Day

On Thursday 28th September it was National Poetry Day. We celebrated it at the Academy by having poetry themed KS3 lessons all day in the English department. As well as that the staff here have created a poetry book full of recommendations from the staff.

We also extended our celebration to Thursday 5th October where we had an all years Rap Battle in the Library at lunchtime. This gave the students a chance to express themselves in a different form of poetry.

We had a great turn out and had some amazing rap artists including a member of staff! But we did have a clear winner, William Burrisson in Year 11.

Well done William, we hope you enjoy your prizes and thank you to everyone who participated and supported this fun event.

Mr S Branchsmith

Hassenbrook Attendance League

Don’t forget, we are running our Attendance League. This is a competition that we are going to be running weekly. Depending on what your attendance percentage is for the week depends on if you get

entered for the prize draw at the end of each half term.

Posters explaining the Attendance League will be up in Tutor Rooms. If you have any questions, please ask your tutor or Mr Ruck.

Councillor Visit For Democracy Week

On Wednesday 11th October the School Council had a visit from some local councillors as part of Democracy Week. Councillor Joy Redsell, Councillor Brian Little and Councillor Terry Piccolo met with

our school council to discuss what it is like to become a Councillor and gave them a taste of what life is like in the world of politics. Their visit also helped our school council to get an idea on how to conduct meetings as a student voice. The visit provided an invaluable and inspiring insight for the students as to what it has taken the Councillors to become who they are today; our students were even lucky enough to meet the former

Mayor of Thurrock, Councillor Joy Redell. Thank you so much again for coming to speak to our school council and we look forward to your next inspirational visit. Mr D Ruck

Peer Mentors

We would like to give a special mention to our peer mentors who have been carrying out their duties in helping settle and support our current year 7 students. They have been applying the skills acquired throughout their training programme. They are caring, supportive and helpful. We thank them for their help. Well done! Ms S Tahiri

Letters from the Mayor of Thurrock

As you may know, four of our Year 10 students went to New York taking part in the DC Think Global Diversity Project 2017. It was an amazing experience and if you would like to read more about it then please take a look at our Facebook page. We want to say a massive thank you to the Mayor of Thurrock. We have just received your letters to the students wishing them congratulations and thanks. We still feel so privileged to have been able to take part in such a wonderful project and we hope to work with you all on the next one. Mrs T Tarling

Hassenbrook Academy Sport News

On Thursday 28th September, our Year 7 & 8 girls football team played an English Schools Football knockout cup game against St Paul’s. Even with only one indoor training session prior to the match, the girls played amazingly and won the match 2-1. This result means that our team is through to the next round.

The team players were Leia Edwards, Eva More, Georgia Booth, Sofija Satkovskaja, Lucy Murphy, Calley Perry, Molly Cuzen, Brooke Wells, Libby Fletcher, Emma Lunn (GK), Emily Coveney and Emily Butler. Both Emily C and Emily B scored screamer goals in the second half of the match. Our defence was amazing during the 2nd half meaning that the opposing team only managed to get two shots on goal!

We also had our Year 8 boys football teams play their English Schools knockout cup match on Thursday against Ockendon. Mr Grealish said that the boys played very well and had a great second half. Joel Token scored a goal for the team but unfortunately they were unlucky and lost the game.

The team players were Bailey Webster, Joel Tokan, Joshua Gladstone, Gabriel Aduroja, Osazee Osas, Jonathan Sanyaolu, Andrew Onwe, Felix Annan, Kieran Harris and Bernardas Bartkevicius.

Also, on Tuesday 3rd October our Year 9 Girls Netball team played against Grays Convent. This was the girls first match of the season and demonstrated great teamwork and support. Even though they played

really well, they lost at the final whistle. The team players were: Molly Blake, Terri Quirke, Amelia Humberstone, Louise Newman, Macey Smith , Rosie Coveny, Baily White, Alana Page Gibbon and Halle Varris.

And on Thursday 5th October the Year 9 Girls Netball team played another game against Gable Hall. Amazing play was seen from both teams and Hassenbrook managed to come back from 4 goals down to win 7-6 on the final whistle. They all showed amazing team work and self-belief which is what lead them to victory. The team players were: Molly Blake, Terri Quirke, Amelia Humberstone, Louise Newman, Macey Smith , Amaree Charles, Baily White and a few other girls. Well done to all, you are doing the Academy proud! Mrs H Day

Maeson King Plays for Thurrock District Team

We are so pleased to announce that Maeson King in Year 7 has been selected to play for the Schools Thurrock District Football team.

Maeson push through the first round of trials and did so well that he was drafted for the second round, and smashed that too!

A massively well done to you Maeson, we are so proud. Mrs H Day

As part of the Safeguarding Guidelines at the Academy, parents should be

reminded that they should endeavour to drop pupils off in a safe and

considerate manner. Hassenbrook Road becomes too congested and young

people are having to negotiate many parked vehicles. If you need to come

into the site, this should be via the main gate as visitors can be seen on

camera. We have large buses that drop pupils off in the designated area, they often have

difficulty negotiating both residents' and visitors' vehicles. Although this seems a small

matter to some, the safety of our pupils is a very important element of our responsibility

of pupil safety. Parking on the zigzag lines around schools means that children cannot see

over your car when trying to cross the road. If you park in a dangerous place, you may be

issued with a penalty charge notice. We thank you for your support with this matter.
