W@M Report Year 7 - We have started Term 3 with a lot of activity. It was wonderful to see a record number of Year 7 students receive either a Gold or Silver Merit Award at our Personal Best Assembly in week 1 for all their efforts during Semester 1. Students who attained a gold merit achieved their personal best in all subjects or all subjects but one. Those who received a silver merit award achieved their personal best in all subjects but two. The girls are to be commended for this excellent achievement. Every year, each year group gives back to the community through a charity initiative. This year, Year 7 will be running a cupcake stall for the RSPCA Cupcake Day on Monday 19th August. The RSPCA is an organisation that provides food, bedding, comfort, medical attention and a second chance at life to animals in need across Australia. In order to do their work, they rely on the generosity of the community. Every dollar raised this Cupcake Day will make a real difference to animals in need. What we are asking from Year 7 is to donate sweets, cakes or any other food to our cake stall on Monday 19th August. We are very excited for Year 7 to be involved in their first charity fundraising event. In W@M this term, the students will look at the idea of emotional intelligence. Key components covered will include self-awareness (learning to be aware of your emotions) and self-regulation (controlling one’s reactions). We encourage you to talk with your daughter about the strategies covered and a parent ‘cheat sheet’ will be emailed out soon to help you with this. Some important dates for this term include: Gala Day: Tuesday 13th August Language selections for Year 8 issued: Tuesday 3rd September In-Rhythm: Friday 6th September Mackellar Book Parade: Wednesday 11th September Year 7 Literacy Day: Thursday 12th September Ms Goykovic, Ms Maxwell & Ms Adams – Year 7 Advisors Year 8 - Our year group started the term by being recognised for their semester 1 efforts at our ‘Personal Best’ assembly in week 1. Over three-quarters of the girls received a personal best award and we hope all are awarded in semester 2 as this award is not linked to academic results. This term in W@M the students will be covering wellbeing practices that encompass ‘self-talk’. Self-talk is that voice in our mind which says things we don’t necessarily say out loud. We often do it without realising it and it can determine a lot of how we feel about who we are. The hard part about self-talk is that it always feels true, even though our thoughts might often be biased or incorrect, we tend to assume that they’re facts. The girls will discuss the difference between negative self-talk and positive self-talk as well as how to do ‘better self-talk’. Some strategies we will practise to challenge our self-talk will include: putting things in perspective (will this matter in 1 week/month/year?) and goal-directed thinking (what can I do to help me solve the problem?) The next couple of weeks will be quite busy for Year 8, especially leading up to Science Week and their Techno Museum display day on Monday 19th August. This day will be the culmination of over a week of work to research the science behind a technology and create a display, with the top projects going to Manly Campus for a College Expo Day. On Monday 12th August, the girls will spend the day participating in workshops delivered by KYDS Youth Development Service. They will cover topics on mental health, bullying and cyber-safety as well as communication skills. Congratulations to the following students who have been nominated for showing our school value of perseverance during our growth mindset challenge last term: Ally, Indiana, Naima and Jasmine. These girls persevered and developed a skill or taught themselves a new skill – Ally and Jasmine can now juggle! If anyone wants a thought-provoking book to read, have a look at ‘Teen Brain’ by David Gillespie. Ms Karandonis, Mr Beeby & Ms Maconachie - Year 8 Advisors Year 9 - Ms Joldzic and myself are incredibly proud with the large number of Year 9 students who received either a GOLD award or SILVER award for achieving their personal best as evidenced in Semester 1 Reports. Following from this your daughter(s) was asked to complete a Report Reflection and learning goals activity via their Google classroom W@M grouping. As educators we believe reflection is an important tool for development, with evidence showing that teaching students to self-reflect is a tangible strategy for building student growth mindset. Three simple reflection questions important for your daughter(s) are: What’s working? What’s not? What’s next? What’s working? Asks your daughter(s) to think about the ways in which things are going well. What is interesting to note is that most students will comment on their own learning process or outcomes e.g. “My

Page 4: Mackellar Girls Campus Newsletter › content › dam › doe › sws › … · As the weather chills some students are adding items of clothing that are not part of the uniform

4

behavior affected my overall report. I concentrated in class, asked for help when I did not understand and completed all the revision questions assigned by my teacher.”

What’s not? Asks about finding the areas that can be addressed for improvement. Some students will be overly self-critical here, while others will be naive about their own abilities. As teachers we pay careful attention to how students answer this question.

What’s next? This is most important question for students because it asks your daughter to make a choice and construct a plan to move forward. “What things could I do that will help improve my following report?” Effective strategies may include concentrating in class, working hard, completing all set homework, and adopting effective study habits at home.

We encourage your daughter(s) to speak to their class teacher or alternatively seek Ms Joldzic or myself if they feel unsure of how to improve their grades. The school also makes available a Tutorial Centre in the library each weekday where your daughter can get support. Ms Biswell & Ms Joldzic - Year 9 Advisors Year 10 - Semester Two has started off strongly for Year 10, who have now completed their subject selection process with the Year 10 interviews taking place. It’s a valuable opportunity to get some feedback and insight into subject choices, and the interviewers have been impressed with the thought and consideration that has gone into our year group’s selections. Year 11 will be an exciting time for our girls here at Mackellar, as they begin their Preliminary studies, ultimately culminating in their HSC year. Students will find high school very different in Year 11 and 12 – the added responsibility and gravity of school life is equally matched with opportunities and privileges. Those students who are passionate about their subjects, have a goal set for their futures (even if this goal changes!) and have developed a strong work ethic in their junior years will enjoy the new experiences of Years 11 and 12 here at Mackellar.

In W@M lessons, students have been learning about the importance of identity and self-concept. Ideas and attitudes that students and people hold about themselves and the world around them ultimately come true, and that is why reflecting and holding positive attitudes towards self is important. This is even more relevant and important in entering the senior years, where students will need to show resilience and motivation to be able to meet challenges overcome theme more and more frequently. If students can develop these skills now, with the help of their W@M teachers and the activities in their school diaries, they will find be set up with important and useful skills for the rest of their lives. Ms Hawes & Ms Coles - Year 10 Advisors Year 11 - The students have started their final term of Year 11 with gusto. In week one our personal best assembly celebrated all of the girls who have been applying themselves to the best of their ability throughout the first semester. We were extremely pleased to see 112 students awarded a Gold Certificate and 21 achieving a Silver Certificate. These awards show that the vast majority of Year 11 are working hard in class and that their teachers are pleased with their progress regardless of academic ability. Well done girls and we hope to be reading out even more names at the end of the year. Students should be reminded to complete their report reflections. This valuable process encourages them to identify their strengths and weaknesses in their approach to their school work and enables them to set realistic and achievable goals for their future studies. Ms Peachy & Ms Reed - Year 11 Advisors

Year 12 - We were very impressed by the works that were displayed in the HSC Major Works Display Evening in Week 2. The students’ talents, creativity, skills, inquisitiveness and depth of knowledge were well presented in their projects and performances. We would like to thank all of the teachers involved for their valuable wisdom, guidance, support and many hours spent within and outside of school in making sure the girls are working to their potential in their major works. All of these projects and practical performances will be due for external marking in the upcoming weeks and we would like to wish them all the best of luck. The HSC Trial Examination has started this week. These exams not only act as an internal assessment for the girls in each of their subjects, it is also a good experience for them to practise working under exam conditions before their HSC exams in Term 4. As some of these exams are quite long, it can be a daunting and stressful experience for some. As mentioned previously, to achieve success in exams, it is important to have a regular and balanced work/ study routine, diet, exercise and good quality sleep. Our advice to the girls is to pace themselves in their studies and exams and to do their best. Please note that attendance is compulsory after the conclusion of the HSC Trial Examination Weeks. We cannot believe that this is the last term of schooling for the girls. Although the end is near, we encourage the girls to maintain motivation, keep working to their best and make the most out of all of these wonderful learning experiences in Mackellar. Ms Reeves & Ms Leung - Year 12 Advisors

NBSC Languages Short Film Festival The Year 9 language classes have been working hard on their film projects. They have created a short film in their respective languages, with subtitles to showcase their language and communication skills. Their films were shown at the festival on Wednesday 7 August at the Freshwater Senior Campus Performance Theatre.

LIBRARY UPDATE - Welcome back everyone to the start of Term 3. We hope you all had a wonderful break, and managed to squeeze in some holiday reading. With winter still hanging around, many can feel blue from the cold. Our suggestion? Grab a blue book and warm yourself up in a cosy corner. Escape into some hotter climates and sizzling stories. Term 3 is one of the most exciting terms for the Library. Week 8 is Book Week and the highly anticipated annual Book Parade! This year’s theme is “Stories have Power,” which calls to attention the wide impact of the written word. This can be the inspiration gained through stories of human triumph, from individuals such as Malala Yousafzai and Turia Pitt. It also comes from the time honoured classics such as Jane Austen and Margaret Atwood, who were literary powerhouses. Additionally, we see this power exemplified through superheroes- fighting crime and making a better society. We are eager to see how this theme is carried through the costumes of Book Parade. Additionally this term, Mackellar Library takes part in the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Great Book Swap. This day aims to raise money for remote communities and improve their literacy skills. Students and teachers can swap a favourite book for a gold coin donation. The ILF hopes to raise a total of $350,000 to gift 35,000 new books for schools and students. If you do not wish to swap a book, we will also be collecting gold coin donations. The Great Book Swap will take place in Week 7 so start getting your books ready! Ms Reed and Ms Langford

Odawara Student Exchange In 1990, former Manly Council and Odawara City Council formed a Friendship City Agreement. Part of this agreement includes an annual reciprocal language and cultural student exchange with Tokimeki International School in Odawara, Japan. This year six Mackellar students will get the chance to improve their Japanese language skills and learn firsthand about Japanese culture travelling to Odawara in September.

Congratulations to the following students who have been chosen to represent Northern Beaches Council this trip. Year 10 - Jessica Year 9 - Tleya, Hayley, Katia, Skye, Maya

DRAMA NEWS - We wish our Higher School Certificate Drama students the best of luck as they prepare for their practical examinations in Week 6. The students have worked hard all year to produce an original Group Performance and a theatrical monologue (Individual Project) to the panel of examiners. These major works will be performed in the Senior Drama Showcase on Tuesday August 20th in the Performance Space at 6pm. All are welcome! Congratulations to the Year 11 Drama class who performed their production on the 25th of July. The comedy showcase was a highly engaging and funny production that entertained the audience through a variety of theatre styles. Special congratulations to Jacqueline Ward (Yr 11) who directed the production with great success. Well done, Year 11! Miss Campbell

PDHPE & SPORT PDHPE Programs This term our year 7 students are involved with a trial by Newcastle University called “Health4Life” which targets the key areas of adolescent behaviour that may lead to good or poor health. Mackellar students are part of the “control” group, and as part of the study will be required to complete surveys each year to ascertain their level of health. This is an exciting initiative for the benefit of future generations. All students were sent a consent form last term that required parents to complete online to be a part of the study. FOOTBALL NSW Lily and new recruit Sascha represented Mackellar admirably and have been crowned Football NSW State Cup Champions. Lily and Sascha form part of the unbeaten Avalon W18 team and have not only won their Manly Warringah Div 1 League for the 6th straight year, but also the recent FNSW State Cup. Year 7 GALA DAY Year 7 will be competing at local sports fields against 6 other schools in a sports day of fun and competition in either Netball, Soccer, Touch or Ultimate Frisbee. TOUCH Mackellar played against Inverell HS on Thursday 25th July at Inverell HS and won 8-1, with all girls enjoying the experience of the trip. They will now play in the NSWCHS Final 10 Series of the Open Touch Football KO at Bateau Bay on the 14th and 15th August. Players for this trip included Edie, Zara, Megan, Hannah, Kiiahla, Matilda, Lily, Charlee, Lucia and Olivia. FUTSAL On Wednesday 31st of July, the Mackellar 14 Years Futsal Team attended the State Championship after winning their Regional Competition in March. It was a long day for the girls, with a 6.30 am departure from school, returning at 5.50 pm. The girls played magnificently winning their first four pool games and drawing the final one. They also won their quarter final and semi-final comfortably . Unfortunately, the grand final proved a bridge too far, the team losing by three goals to two. However, considering they were three nil down at half time, it was a fine effort to get back into the game. Perhaps an extra minute might have seen them well. Overall the girls played with commitment and spirit to do Mackellar proud. Well done girls. REGIONAL ATHLETICS Mackellar WON the overall point score at the Regional Carnival which is an amazing effort in light of the fact that we could only compete in half the events! Congratulations to our 4 x 100m relay teams – 12s,13s,15s,16s,17s age groups who have all qualified to compete at the NSW CHS Carnival with 25 students competing in individual Track and Field events. An outstanding effort. REGIONAL/CHS CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to all the students who attended the Regional Cross Country Carnival on the 21st of June last term. We had some outstanding results across all age groups, with Mercy, Sophie and Mali taking first place in their age groups. A further congratulations to all the students who attended NSW CHS Cross Country Carnival on the 26th of July, in particular to Mercy who placed 3rd. Well done girls! SCHOOL SWIMMING NATIONALS IN MELBOURNE Charli competed last week in the National School Swimming in Melbourne and was named NSW Team Captain. Her exceptional individual results were: 1st 200 freestyle (new Australian School record); 3rd 50 Fly; 1st 200 IM; 3rd 50 Free; 1st 100 Back; 1st 400 Free (new Australian School record); 1st 100 Free; 4th 50 Back; 1st 400 IM NRL On Thursday the 1st of August, a 9-a side team of Mackellar Girls competed for the North Sydney NRL Trophy against 5 other schools in the Open Girls division. With four wins and a close loss to Narrabeen Sports High School, Mackellar placed second on the day. KO Soccer This year the Open Knockout Soccer Team has progressed all the way to the Quarter finals of the Statewide Knockout. Games have been happening over the last five months and have included an away game in Moruya on the South Coast. The girls unfortunately lost their quarter final game 2-0 against Rouse Hill. The players should be commended for their fantastic teamwork and never-say-die attitude. Rhonda Williams Head Teacher PDHPE/SPORT

JUST WANT TO SAY A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO MY VOLUNTEERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU THAT COME IN WEEKLY, YOU ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED & THE SHOP COULD NOT RUN SO SMOOTHLY WITHOUT YOU. ALL PROCEEDS RAISED IN OUR SCHOOL UNIFORM SHOP GO DIRECTLY BACK INTO YOUR DAUGHTERS’ EDUCATION. Thank you, Leigh McPherson — Uniform Shop Coordinator Email: [email protected]
