Dear Parents and Caregivers,
SPORTS DAYS
The end of second term is often a busy one – and this year is no exception!
Last week our school held the Years 3 to 6 Athletic s Carnival , with our 800m events held on Wednesday and the remainder of our track and field events taking place on Thursday 8th June. Congratulations to Herbert who were the winning sports’ house on the day. Can I say with pride that throughout the day the students demonstrated wonderful behaviour and sports-manship. A mantra that is a great one to live life by is to not to be better than anyone else, but to be better than I was yesterday and our students definitely showed that they were trying their best and encouraging others to do the same.
FINAL ASSEMBLY FOR TERM 2
Next week, we will hold our final school parade for the term on Friday 23rd Jun e in our Hall . This assembly will include, 100% attendance for Term 2 awardees and Principal Achievement list awards for academic excellence in Semester 1. It will be a long assembly, but one with a lot to celebrate. Parent attendance is most welcome.
STAFFING CHANGES FOR TERM 3.
As with all schools and workplaces there are staffing changes that can occur from time to time. That is the case with our school at the beginning of Semester 2.
Mrs Leigh Wilson will conclude her contract with our school at the end of this semester and we would like to thank Mrs Wilson for her efforts during Semester 1 with the 1B class. From the beginning of Semester 2 Mrs Fiona Janson and Mrs Vicki Wicks will be working in a shared teaching arrangement in 1B. Mrs Janson is returning to our staff from recent maternity leave and Mrs Wicks will be moving from her current one day a week role in Prep MW to work with Mrs Janson. Both are looking forward to working together and with the students and families in 1B.

Improvement Agenda 2017
2
With Mrs Wicks moving to the 1B class to work with Mrs Janson, Mrs McKinnon in Prep MW will now be working full time in Prep from the beginning of Semester 2.
I have been seconded to office of the director general in central office to work in the School Improvement Unit throughout Term 3. In my absence Mrs Di Schmidt will step into the role of principal. Mrs Schmidt’s role of deputy principal will be filled internally. The successful classroom teacher will be expected to, in addition to the role of deputy principal, maintain daily contact with their current class so that continuity of the class and school expectations are maintained for the students and their families.

SHELL QUESTACON SCIENCE CIRCUS
S hell Questacon Science Circus visited our school on
Tuesday 6th June. They performed highly movaonal
demonstraon style science shows to students from Prep to Year 6.
The shows explored the relevance of science and technology in everyday
life using familiar everyday items and a touch of theatre. Our students were
engaged, inspired and enthused by the performances.
IMPROVEMENT AGENDA - NUMBER
U nderstanding and working with number is another area of parcular focus for improvement
this year for the students in our school.
Number is not just about the ability to count or recognise a
number. It’s about a deep understanding of what numbers mean, the
understanding of their relaonship to one another and includes
understanding of the total quanty and different ways that that
quanty can be made. For example, the number 24 can be shown as
20 and 4, 2 tens and 4 ones, 1 ten and 14 ones, 2 groups of 12, one
less than 25, 10 more than 14, half of 48, etc.
Students who develop a deep understanding of number are able to readily apply this knowledge to
“..think and reason flexibly with numbers, use numbers to solve problems, spot unreasonable
answers, understand how numbers can be taken apart
and put together in different ways, see connecons
among operaons, figure mentally, and make reason-
able esmates.” (About Teaching Mathemacs,
Marilyn Burns)
To help your child develop a strong sense of
number, encourage them to think about
and use numbers, not just count and
recognize.

Bake Together -
It’s not too early to expose your child to fracons - especially
through measurement when baking. Involve your child in making
biscuits, having him/her
measure the ingredients - with
your supervision, of course! Imagine
together how many biscuits you might
make from the biscuit dough, then see
how close you were to your esmates!
(Check on your esmates from me to me as
you are making them: “Hmm! I guess we could make 20
biscuits but we’ve already made 18 and we have lots le@!
I’m thinking now that maybe we can make 30 biscuits!”)
Build Together -
Whole numbers and fracons show up everywhere when building things. Involve
your child in a simple building project (wood, material, paper, etc.). Remember to
esmate, first! You might even throw in an esmate of me: “I wonder how long it will
take us to make this bird house? 5 minutes? 5 hours? 5 days?”
(Acvies taken from Mathemacs a Guide for Parents to Everyday Mathemacs and
Helping Your Child at Home Grades K-6, published by Central Kitsap School District Department
of Curriculum and Instrucon, 2000.)
BEING RESPECTFUL
W e connue to work with our students around the value of respect. Modelling what we teach
is the most powerful way others learn as hearing and seeing translate into acons. We teach
our students to treat others, as they want to be treated. Respect is the pillar that supports the bridge
called relaonship.
As parents and carers coming into our school, we ask that you be mindful of students learning from
what they see and hear and that you are also in the privileged posion to model respecJul
behaviours for them to learn from.
Below are some ps to help us be more respecJul towards others.
Tips To Be RespecJul -
• Be kind.
• Listen aLenvely and show interest in whatever is said.
• Good manners are the essenal quality to show respect. So, culvate
good manners, as people get a sense of respect, when they interact with
a well-mannered person. Good behaviour automacally earns the respect
of others.
• Do not stereotype other people. Stereotyping makes you come across as a
narrow-minded person. It also shows your lack of respect for the person
you are stereotyping.

6
• You cannot respect anyone whom you mock,
tease or backbite.
• Apologizing for your mistake, can show how much you
respect the other person.
• When you respect someone, you must also respect his choice and
free will. So, don’t pressurize anyone to do something which he or she is
not willing to do.
• To show respect, value other people’s opinion. This does not mean blindly
follow whatever they say. You must show your understanding of his or her
opinion, and then present your reasons for agreement or disagreement.

Hello again Mackay North Families,
Firstly , I am aending a HOSES conference in
Brisbane. This is the second ever HOSES conference
that has been organised by the Department of Educaon

on:
• addressing and exploring the Disabil ity Review
recommendaons;
• delivering and bui lding on the key outcomes of the
Disabil ity Review – what it means for each of us
• building the leadership and capabil ity of HOSES.
In one of the newsleers last year I aached a l ink for parents and carers
to contribute to the survey that was undertaken as part of the review.
Next term I wi l l be able to give you the outcomes of the review which was
aimed at ensuring world-class inclusive educaon is available to all
students. I hope some of our families contributed to the survey!
What is Inclusive Educaon, you ask?
Inclusive educaon means that every day in every classroom, every state
school student is learning and achieving in a safe, supporve, inclusive and
disciplined learning environment.
Inclusive educaon provides all students with access to high-quality school ing
that is free from discriminaon based on gender, language, sexual or ientaon,
pregnancy, culture, ethnicity, religion, health or disabi l ity or socio-economic
background or geographic locaon.
The Queensland disabil ity review report is now avai lable on the department’s
website and provides a comprehensive discussion of findings and offers a number
of recommendaons.

Mr Stink On Friday 2
nd June, Years 2, 3 and 4 students travelled to the MECC to see the stage producon of
the David Walliams’ novel “Mr Snk”. With thanks to the “Pathways to Performance” program we
were able to subsidise the cost of this excursion having the bus paid for enrely by a grant.
Students were thoroughly entertained by the hilarious show and sat capvated in their seats from
start to finish. As always Mackay North State School students demonstrated exemplary behaviour
while we were out and about, displaying their best manners both on the bus and in the theatre.
An enjoyable morning was had by all.

Pyjama Night in the
Library We recently held the Annual
Pyjama/Storytelling Night in the
library. A fantas9c group of children
a:ended with their parents to se:le in
and hear awesome stories read by our
teachers.
There is untold value in sharing books
together, and we hope that Pyjama Night
demonstrates this to our parent community!
We had a mix of funny and though=ul stories that were read with enthusiasm and met
with delight from our students.
Our aim is for our school community to appreciate the value of story books and find our
library a welcoming and accessible space to enhance the literacy of our children.
Along with the stories read, we had some lucky door prizes to give out and extra prizes for
Best Pyjamas, Best Teddy and Best Listener.
The night concluded with warm Milo and biscuits and the opportunity for extra borrowing. It
was great to see children leave with a book they will enjoy at home.
A big thanks to Mrs Schmidt, Mrs Caldow, Mrs Hine, Mrs McGann and Mrs Wilson for your
help. It was so appreciated.
I hope we see you all at Pyjama Night next year!

Every year, Mrs Jan Bell, a former Mackay North State School

Jan has come up with a novel idea for any unwanted “Marvel

Therapeutic Foster Carers are needed in the Mackay region. These types of carers provide safe homes to children whose needs are higher and more complex than other children. They have often experienced significant trauma, grief and loss, and as a result will often have challenging behaviours. Some of these children can also have an intellectual or physical disability. Foster carers who provide this type of care are resili-ent, calm, patient, nurturing and have a good sense of humour.
We believe every child has the right to a loving and secure home and we provide additional supports, training and 24 hour on call to carers who take care of children with complex needs.
