Welcome to Mackay for the 2016 Mackay Mazda Festival of Arts – part of our vibrant calendar of events that makes Queensland the best address on earth.

Experiences are at the core of any destination event and I hope you come away from the Mackay Festival of Arts with some amazing Queensland memories. Events play an important role in showcasing a destination, driving visitation, fostering community pride and creating jobs for the local community.

The Palaszczuk Government recognises that events drive Queensland’s tourism economy and we are proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program.

Thank you to the event organisers, volunteers, and those who have come together to deliver the Mackay Mazda Festival of Arts for Queensland, and I encourage you to make the most of the tourism offerings throughout the destination.

In 2016, you will see the G&S Engineering Wine & Food Day pop up on the fi rst weekend of the Festival, kicking the Festival into high gear

from beginning to end. Boasting an oval full of gourmet food, sublime wines and craft beers coupled with two stages of free live entertainment, the Black Duck Kitchen’s Chef’s Bites demonstrations and a great selection of market stalls, you can see why it’s Mackay’s event not to be missed.

The 2016 G&S Engineering Wine and Food Day Main Stage will feature a stellar line-up of singers and bands from around the nation.

The day kicks off at 10.30am with the captivating vocals of local talent Oliver Carter-Beck.

Entertainment includes a selection of fantastic live performances from local bands such as Django heating up the stage with their popular party hits, through to the Danni Da Ros Band. Danni Da Ros (pictured) is one of Australia’s most talented, versatile and dynamic vocalists and will have you up off your picnic blanket this year.

Headlining our Main Stage is Tim Campbell, supported by some of the best musicians in the business. Step back in time, and boogie on down to the most loved songs of the 70s, 80s and 90s with The Tim Campbell Band.

Catch the headline acts on stage at the exclusive after party – the Festival Supper Club, live and intimate at the MECC from 7pm.

Pick a patch of grass and settle in for the sounds of The Soorleys (pictured) – a tousled bohemian outfi t bringing you original songs including four-part harmonies, the jangle of banjos and the thump of the fl oor tom.

Sol Nation will heat up the Grassroots Stage in 2016 – the band is set to get the party started mid-afternoon with their infectious rhythm, worldly lyrics and impassioned musicianship. Sol Nation draws upon a wealth of international musical culture to bring you a melting pot of Reggae, Samba, Funk, Salsa, East Timorese folk and African dance music.

The essential stage to visit for music lovers interested in discovering new artists, music and fun.

The Kidzone at the G&S Engineering Wine & Food Day is always a must-do for young families of Mackay, including train rides, jumping castles, tea cup rides, merry go round and face painting. The Kidzone will offer children a place to exert all that energy before settling down in front of one of the stages with their parents for an afternoon of music.

This year will feature the Pop Up City Workshop where the possibilities are endless! Mums, dads and kids can venture in and create their own buildings and archways in this cardboard city. Put your imagination and building skills to the test and see what you can create in this cardboard jungle. This workshop is free! Please check the website for times.

Just because you have clean water, food, shelter and a Mimco handbag doesn’t mean you don’t have problems. #FirstWorldWhiteGirls is a hilarious comedy cabaret created and performed by Judy Hainsworth (Babushka, Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts) and Kaitlin Oliver (The Mikado).

Tiffany (Judy Hainsworth) and Kendall (Kaitlin Oliver Parker) are a trust fund princess and day-drinking trophy wife from the suburbs of Brisbane. Join Tiffany and Kendall as they delve into the trauma of living in the fi rst world - dealing with kale shortages, un-bespoke furniture, battling FOMO and in times of crisis, asking themselves, What Would Kim Kardashian Do? These spoiled songstresses invite you into their den of entitlement to laugh, vent and share in their fi rst world pain. Politically incorrect and outrageously funny, this is a must-see for anyone who has been too cold with the aircon on, but too hot with it off.

8.30pm dailyWednesday 13 - saturday 16 July

Some of Australia’s fi nest musicians and acrobats butt heads to create Scotch and

Soda, a whiskey-soaked evening of raucous dance and

dextrous feats.

Channelling the vibe of some alternate place and time where early military

brass bands meet travelling gypsies in a rowdy whiskey

joint. Leading you in to the realm of vaudeville

with their grimy charm and breathtaking acrobatics

are four of Australia’s most experienced and respected circus performers. Add the

big brass gyp-hop/funk fusion stylings of the Crusty Suitcase

Band, led by renowned percussionist and composer

Ben Walsh; and things are going to get spectacularly

messy.

“the show is unmissable; its world is so alluring, so intoxicating”

This exhibition draws attention to humankind’s changing relationships

with animals which are complex and often contradictory. The

artists examine human nature and challenge us to think about how we treat animals, asking us to question

the ethics of keeping, killing and engineering new species of animals.

The selected artists Katka Adams, Marian Drew, Hayden Fowler, Kelly

Hussey-Smith, Owen Hutchison, Claude Jones, Sam Leach, Emma

Lindsay, Rod McRae and Walter Stahl have dedicated much of their

arts practice to this challenge. They have tackled the subject in diverse ways, seeing issues from different angles and expressing themselves through a variety of

media, including photography and moving images, painting, mixed

media, print making, installation art, performance art and sculpture.

Wasted beauty is an environmental art exhibition, which aims to take some of the items which cannot go in our recycling bin, and use them to create beauty. This exhibition aims to increase awareness around consumption and highlight the excessive and often unnecessary waste in our consumer society. It hopes to inspire people to look at these disposable items differently and creatively. This project uses a variety of plastics, including plastic bottle tops to create hanging works, sculptures and a large floating mandala installation visible from the café deck. The exhibition is created by a group of diverse, environmentally-conscious local artists.
