B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering

Course: Machining Processes and Metrology (MEE 217)

Time : Three Hours Max. Marks: 100

PART – A (10 x 4 = 40 Marks)

Answer All the questions

1. Discuss the mechanism of chip formation during turning process.

2. Define: Machinability. Write an example for evaluating the machinability rate.

3. What is meant by ‘Tool Signature’? List the elements with suitable numerical values.

4. Draw a Pull Type Broach and mention its specification.

5. Differentiate between a solid cutter and tipped solid cutter. Give Examples.

6. Explain the need for Dressing and Truing of grinding wheels.

7. List any four Gear Finishing methods and write their capabilities.

8. Illustrate how thread cutting can be performed using Laser Beam.

9. How would you express the four basic grades of gage blocks? Write one application for each

grade.

10. Draw the setup showing the use of a Sine bar for precision measurement of workpiece angles.

PART – B (5 x 12 = 60 Marks)

11 a) Discuss in detail about various mechanism of tool wear. Illustrate the formation of flank wear

with suitable sketches.

determine the quantitative values of all the elements mentioned in the diagram.

b) Explain the various bond and bonding processes that are available for manufacturing

grinding wheels.

14 a) Briefly explain about any two gear generating methods with simple sketches.

b) Draw the schematic view of the equipment used for abrasive jet machining process and

explain the working principle.

15 a) Explain the working principle of “ Tool Makers’ Microscope” with the illumination

drawing.

b) Illustrate the working principle of mechanical comparator with a neat sketch.
