Layout of a press cylinder on a "LASCO"hydraulic press.

Comprehensively proven...

Regardless of whether they aremetal powder presses, powderforging presses or sizing presses –LASCO's hydraulic presses arerecognisable by their outstandingfeatures.

Press cylinderThe press cylinder is forged steelwith the bore honed. A pre-fillvalve between the top of the cylinder and the oil tank ensuresrapid filling and return of the oil.Split chevron packings with wiperrings provide a seal between cylinder and piston.

Press pistonThe press piston is also forged. The contact surfaces are hardened, ground, and polished. A bronzebush ensures optimum sliding characteristics in the upper sealingand guiding area.

RamThe ram may be either a steelcasting or welded construction, fully stress-relieved. The presspiston is accurately mated with thebore in the ram and clamped secu-rely.

Guiding systemThe guiding system is designedaccording to the specific application. For powder forgingpresses, a system maintaining con-stant clearance in spite of heatexpansion has become standard. For sizing presses, a guidingsystem with eight slideways is pre-ferred. The sliding surfaces arebronze running on nitrated steel.Tight clearances may be maintai-ned and are adjustable by shims.

Combined with the long ram guiding system and the high pressrigidity, production of high accuracy parts with excellent toollife is assured.

Press frame designThe choice of press frame design, either single piece or multiple ele-ment construction is determinedby table area, installation height, ram stroke and application.

Single piece welded con -struction, stress-relieving heattreated.

Multiple element press frames, consisting of press table, uprights and cross head, pre-stressed with four tie rods.

Multiple element press frameThe press frame offers a whole lotof advantages, compared with sin-gle piece frames. Different materi-als of special suitability may be considered for the individual parts.

Potential notch stress concentrationsat the connection between thetable and the uprights and between the cross-head and theuprights on single piece frames areeliminated.

Transport of multiple elementpress frames may be easier and atlower cost, as the press is able tobe disassembled into smallerunits.

Above all, the press frame consisting of several parts is considerably more rigid as a resultof the pre-stressing. For the sametensile stress, the elongation isonly 20% of the value induced ina single piece frame.

As well as ensuring longevity ofthe frame, and forming of moreaccurate parts, the overall size andweight of the press may be redu-ced.

The temperature of the hydraulicfluid is kept constant, even duringperiods of standstill, by a heatingelement integrated in the fluidtank. A separate cooling andfiltration system with its owncirculation pump prevents themaximum temperature from beingexceeded and continuously purifiesthe hydraulic fluid. The actualdegree of filter clogging is shownon the controller’s display.

Local process controllerThe “brain” of every modernmachine tool is its local processcontroller. The controller isconfigured in-house andprogrammed individually for themetal forming machine’s particulartask and the specific needs of theuser.

LASCO’s core competence insoftware programming, coupledwith the design and assembly ofelectronic, electrical andmechatronic components gives usthe flexibility needed to satisfy allfeasible engineering needs. Theprovision of interfaces forintegration in existing processes isjust as much a part of this well-practised philosophy as is the useof master controllers forinterlinked operations.

Hydraulic drive on the press crown - inblock assembly.

With direct drive, the working movementsof the hydraulic press are purely the resultof the drive’s pump capacity. This solutionis chosen when, for example, a specificpower is needed over a long period withonly short breaks occurring in the produc -tion cycle.

Hydraulic accumulator drive stores a part ofthe energy in the hydroaccumulator whichcan be tapped as required. This solution isespecially chosen when, for example, highpeak powers are needed over short periodsand there is sufficient time between peakrequirements to charge up the accumulatoragain.

Decisive power pack

Press drivesThe capacity and quality of a pressdrive is a vital deciding factor forthe efficiency and economy of themachine, a good reason for us notto outsource such a component. We carry out the complete design, development and production of ourhydraulic drives in-house – indivi -dually customised for each machine.

Direct drive, hydraulic accumulator drive, and combinationsDepending on the size andcharacteristics of the press, we usethree basic concepts for hydraulicdrives: direct drive, hydraulicaccumulator drive or acombination of both (pump andaccumulator drive). With thesevariants we can generate pressforces from 1000 kN to 50000 kN.

Preferably, we mount the pressdrive as a block on the presscrown. This has importantadvantages such as access to allthe hydraulic elements andshortest possible length ofhydraulic piping between pump, accumulator and cylinder. Ifrequired, we can supply alternativedesigns when, for example, thereare height problems. In suchcases, the drive can be locatednext to the press.

MPP series multi-platen powder pressunder assembly.

LASCO metal powder presses canoffer the flexibility of hydraulicpresses with the same robustnessand performance known frommechanical presses.

Decades of experience in theconstruction of hydraulic forgingand sizing presses are a guaranteeof press and adapter design thatcan meet all applications:

Generously sized press framesand central dissipation of pressforce ensures maximum rigidityand minimum deformation.

System pressure is kept delibe -rately low at 250 bar to ensureminimum wear of the robustservo-hydraulics during operation.

The LASCO pressing processLASCO metal powder presses areservo-hydraulic multi-plate pressesworking in the range above 2500 KN.

In the basic version they are fittedwith four movable platens, anauxiliary piston in the upper ramand a core rod with press stop. Ifparts of higher complexity andwith up to nine part levels are tobe pressed then the basic versionis extended by one platen each inthe upper and lower adaptersections.

LASCO offers presses with the toolframe integrated in the press (MPP … IR series) and presses

with exchangeable adapters (MPP ... DS series).

Adjustable mechanical press stops– optionally servomotor-driven –ensure precise, reproducible presspositions.

The press allows high variability intool layout because almost all thelower levels can absorb the fullpress force.

The filling shoe is driven via aservo cylinder. The profile ofmotion is freely programmable,over-/under- and contour-filling ispossible.

Electrical controllersA Bosch-Rexroth multiple-axiscontroller and a Simatic S7 PLCworking in parallel control themetal powder presses in the MPPseries. Both controllers and thevisualisation PC are interfaced viaa Profibus DP for fast signalexchange

The axis controller allowssynchronous control of allhydraulic axes including fillingshoe drive with a reproducibleaccuracy of ± 0.01 mm -measuring accuracy ± 0.001 mm.In the basic version, up to 32 axescan be controlled in parallel. Axiscontrol, linear interpolation andoscilloscope functions forvisualisation of setpoint and actualvalues are among the standardfunctions available.

these decades of experience, tooffer its customers completepowder forging production linesfrom a single source.

The hydraulic metal powder pressesin the MPP series are best suitedfor the production of the preform. The die and adapter technology isdetermined by the complexity ofthe component and the degree ofcloseness to the geometry of thefinished part.

The heart of the powder forgingline is the forging press. Dependingon the technology and the requiredoutput, the forging machine iseither a hydraulic press from theKPS series or a screw press fromthe SPR/SPP series. Both modelspossess typical features that suitthem to the tough forgingenvironment.

The forging presses are comple -men ted by adapter systems and, ifneeded, they are fitted with quick-change devices and die coolingand lubricating apparatus.

Powder forging lines

The term powder forging describesa forming process that combinesprocess sequences in sinteringtechnology with subsequent hotforming. This process has beensteadily gaining in importance forseveral years now. Near netshapecomponent parts, with the samemechanical strength as pyrometal -lurgically produced components, are possible.

A preform produced powder-metallurgically by pressing andsintering shows to a large degreethe contours of the final product.Subsequent hot-axial compactionis carried out on a forging press ata temperature of ca. 1100 °C. Thepowder-forged part is produceddirectly from the heat of sinteringor by previous inductive heating ina closed die. In this “forgingprocess”, densities of 96% to99% of theoretical density areachieved.

LASCO-Konzepte...Powder forging lines

LASCO’s automation and controltechnology combines metal powderpresses, sinter furnaces andforging presses into a fullyautomated powder forgingproduction line.

The automation technology isdivided into automation betweenmetal powder presses andsintering furnace and automationbetween the sintering furnaceoutput and forging press, includingpress unloading. Specially adaptedindustrial robots are used formanipulation or, as in the case ofsintering furnace discharge needsa special servomotor-driven linearaxis with a water-cooled gripper isused.

KP series

Hydraulic sizing presses

With the aid of sinteringtechniques, precision parts can beproduced with optimal use ofmaterial. Subsequent sizing afterthe sintering process often allowsthe production of near netshapeparts.

Because of their flexible mode ofoperation, hydraulic presses areeminently suited to such a sizingprocess. In contrast to mechanicalpresses with their fixed operationalsequence, they have the advantagethat all operational sequences canbe freely programmed.

Depending on press size and taskdefinition, LASCO’s sizing pressesare designed with single piecepress frames in stress-relievedwelded or in multipiece pre-stressed construction. The highguideway precision required isachieved with a long ram inconjunction with compoundbronze/steel guideway pairs withadjustable clearance.

The design of the hydraulic driveand the control system isdependent on the complexity of

the parts to be sized and theadapter technology used.

The upper and lower rams havehigh-resolution measuring systems.Optionally, the hydraulic axes canbe freely positioned by a positio -ning control system to an accuracyof ± 0.01 mm.

In addition to upper and lower rams, supplementary hydraulic axes canbe integrated in the bottom plateand/or in the press slide.Additional hydrau lic lines cancontrol auxi liary functions in thesizing adapter.

Quick-change systems for fastadapter exchange are available.Adapter clamping in the press andinsertion or removal from the pressare hydraulically assisted usingrollers.

In connection with the LASCOautomation and control techniquethe calibrating presses of the KPseries turn to automatic sizing lines.

For this purpose, the parts to besized are – in a first step - fed to
