India Market for World Food Industry To Grow
Indian Food Industry Scenario: With over 60 percent of India's total land under agriculture, engaging about 70% people for their livelihood, Indian agriculture has made rapid strides in this sector moving from subsistence activity to a net exporter of food products. With a diversity of agro-climatic conditions, the country is home to vast agro-ecological diversity. India is the world's largest producer of milk, pulses, and ranks as the second largest producer of rice, wheat, sugarcane, groundnut, vegetables and fruit. It is also one of the leading producers of spices, fish, poultry, livestock and plantation crops. With a $ 2.1 trillion economy, India is the world's third largest after the US and China. During 2017-18 the total food grain production touched a record 277.49 m tonnes whereas fruits production in 2016-17 was 93 m tonnes, vegetables 175 m tonnes and spices 7 m tonnes. As for livestock, the 2012 census shows a population of cows as 123 m; buffaloes 93 m, goats 135 m and sheep 65 m.
The value added Food processing Sector in India has been on the surge with great thrust coming from both Government and private players. While Government is boosting post harvest and processing infrastructure both in public and private sector, industry is infusing large investments towards setting up of state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is encouraging investments in the business and has allowed 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in food processing sector. India has received around US$ 7.54 billion worth of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) since April 2000-March 2017. Setting up of a dairy processing infra fund worth Rs 8,000 crore (US$ 1.2 billion) and strengthening of food testing infrastructure by FSSAI are other important Government initiatives. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is aiming to double the production of all food crops through National Food Security Mission, NHM, HMNEHS & NHB and disseminating latest and modern practices of production and post harvest care. Today several Indian branded food products are finding prime shelf space in retail chains across US and Europe.
With huge production and conducive policy regime, today the Indian food and grocery market has become the world’s sixth largest and the Indian food processing industry accounts for 32 per cent of the country’s total food market which is currently valued at US$ 1.3 billion and growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 20 per cent.
The need of the hour in India is increased productivity of grains and building of an effective supply chain to ensure that what is produced in the farm reaches the consumer in good shape. Greater use of machinery has, therefore, become necessary in India, where plenty of produce is available for value addition and food processing, but have technical constraints in enhancing production and productivity because of inadequate exposure to high technology & inputs, coupled with advanced production practices, preservation, logistics and marketing. As a result, India is emerging as one of
the hottest destinations not only for Food Processing and Packaging Machinery & Equipment imports from European and South East
External trade: During 2016-17, India’s total agricultural exports were worth $ 33 billion of which 13% is accounted for by processed foods. Though India has a miniscule share of 1.22%. With Government of India’s focus on promotion of value added products, and conducive support policies , there are tremendous avenues for increasing global presence. The potential products for thrust are confectionery, chocolates, coco products, soya-based products, mineral water, high protein foods and nutraceuticals, apart from health food and health food supplements apart from support and allied subjects like refrigeration technologies, cold chain equipment etc.
Asian Countries but also for Agro-Food products from international suppliers.
3rd edition of FoodTech Pune 2019 is a unique platform for industry stakeholders from across the globe to network with each other to harness India’s potential as a reliable supplier and importer. The event will be held concurrently with 11th International Horti Expo 2019, 5th Agrex India 2019, 2nd GrainTech Fair 2019 and 3rd DairyTech 2019 in Pune, India. Together the events will focus on fresh produce, processed foods, food and grain processing machinery, packaging, retailing, dairy and other allied sectors.
Why Pune?
Pune, the second largest city of the commercial capital of India –Maharashtra State- is bestowed with suitable infrastructure and conducive climate for high value agriculture, Floriculture, dairy farming, dairy products etc. Pune is one of the only six districts in the state with per capita income above state average. The district is with high literacy level of 86.15%. The rivers like Bhima, Neera, Mula, Mutha, Indrayani and Ghod flow through this district which carry a great volume of water and many irrigation dams are constructed across these rivers. The district presents a varied physiographic with highly undulating hilly topography on western side and large plain stretch towards east.
Pune district is rich in production of agriculture and horticulture with rice, wheat, coarse grains, grapes, mango, pomegranate, sugarcane, cashew, groundnut and sunflower etc being major products. Government of Maharashtra is also planning further strengthening of agri-horti sector and allied infrastructure for the same. Two programs implemented by the government to increase milk supply are the Integrated Cattle Development Project (ICDP) and the Integrated Dairy Development Project (IDDP).
Pune, in addition has the locational advantage of being close to Mumbai, the trade hub of India.
All these factor make Pune a dream choice for conducting a prestigious exhibition like the 3rd edition of FoodTech Pune 2019 along with its co-events which collectively aim at holistic development of agriculture.
