As with all older Queenslanders, our community hall requires constant care and maintenance. Some major works on the building are needed so we are looking towards grants and fundraising to help with these costs. Saving our hall for the future residents of Machans Beach is the mainstay of every committee member both past and present. Therefore the Machans Beach Community Association is excited to announce their first major fundraiser of 2021. This event aptly named the SAVE OUR HALL ART SHOW will be held 12-14 March in the Machans Beach community hall and its environs in Tucker Street. As Cairns is a region buzzing with arts and culture, it’s a no brainer that our first major fundraising event for the year is the SAVE OUR HALL ART SHOW. We intend showcasing the works of a great mix of our emerging and established artists over three days. A VIP Opening Night on Friday will be followed by two days of display while mingling with the artists and locals alike. Entry will be via a gold coin donation with refreshments available at a small cost. All pieces in the exhibition will be for sale with 80 per cent going back to the artists and 20 per cent being gratefully donated to the Machans Beach Community Association’s SAVE OUR HALL FUND. Hope to see you there! For further information, please contact: Judi Hughes |Treasurer MBCA |E:[email protected] |M: 0417 467 997 STOP THE PRESS! The MBCA have just been advised their application to the Gambling Benefit Fund Round 106 has been successful!! $13,624 has been allocated for the installation of a much needed cooling system for the hall. Congratulations to those members involved in getting the application organised. Thank goodness it’s 2021 and we are back to the new normal. Having said that, the December Christmas Party was an absolute success with an awesome turnout of Machanites both big and small. Even Santa expressed his delight with the huge number of children, saying it was the best he had seen to date. A big thank you to all the committee for the success. The Club will be open Saturday 13 February, 3pm till 8pm, followed by the last Friday of the month being the 26 th from 6pm. New members are welcome to enjoy some light entertainment, BBQ and refreshments. We also provide sporting equipment for use on the basketball and tennis courts. A MORNING FOR THE OCEANS Parley for the Oceans and Cairns Airport are calling on local residents to lend a helping hand for their Clean Up Australia Day clean-up on Sunday, 7th March 2021. The trash and treasure hunting will take place at Ellie Point, a site at the mouth of the Barron River managed by Cairns Airport. Participants are asked to meet at the airport access road off Airport Avenue at 8.45am. The clean-up activities are deemed suitable for participants aged 8 and over of sound health and fitness. All clean-up equipment will be supplied to volunteers, as well as drinking water and light refreshments. Participants are asked to bring sturdy footwear, weather appropriate clothing and a reusable drink bottle. Ellie Point collects a lot of rubbish both from local creeks leading into the Barron River, but also from ocean currents. As an almost inaccessible site for the general public, regular clean-up efforts undertaken by Parley for the Oceans and Cairns Airport have seen over 5 tonnes of rubbish collected over 2 years. For further information, questions or concerns, Parley can be contacted on [email protected]

CRAWFORD’S CORNER Machans Beach Residents,

What a start to the year! Our recent near miss from Cyclone Kimi

is a timely reminder for everyone to be cyclone ready. I hope

everyone has their cyclone kits ready to go with all your essentials

inside. You should also make sure you’ve downloaded the SES

assistance App on your phone or have their number (132 500) on

your fridge in case you need their help.

This year will be big for Cairns with several local major projects

nearing completion, including the Smithfield Bypass, Harley Street

Intersection works and in 2022, the predicted completion of the

Cairns Convention Centre upgrade.

Residents of Machans Beach will also be able to travel easier soon

with planning for the $359 Million Cairns Ring Road project well

underway, which will upgrade the road between the Cairns CBD

and Smithfield. With all this work happening locally we now just

need to make sure our economy can recover. I’ve been meeting

with local businesses who rely on international arrivals and

hearing how important continued financial support is to them

right now.

Without JobKeeper their future is bleak, as not enough tourists

are coming here yet. To avoid job losses I’m hopeful our federal

member Warren Entsch can force the Federal Government to

rethink their decision on ending JobKeeper.

If I can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my

office.

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT AT YORKEYS The public comment stage for the proposed Wellness Centre for Buckley St, Yorkeys Knob, has recently been announced. The Wellness Centre will involve a material change of use so that a 46 unit (with an excess of 60 rooms) facility with two exclusive restaurants and health/spa can go ahead. This will involve significant clearing and excavation of the currently forested site. This development application must take into consideration the submissions made by the community. I strongly urge you to consider the impacts of traffic and parking, the visual amenity being changed from a forested site, the environmental issues of flora and fauna species and the impact on surrounding residents. Please check out the information on Council's website and make a submission to Council by email at [email protected] Adrian Gover |President | Yorkeys Knob Residents Association
