Scene 5

Within the castle, Macbeth orders that banners be hung and boasts that his castle will safe him from the enemy. A woman’s cry is heard, and Seyton appears to tell Macbeth that the queen is dead. Macbeth Shocked and speaks numbly about the passage of time , fear controlled him again . A messenger enters and brings news: the trees of Birnam Wood are advancing toward Dunsinane. Macbeth recalls the prophecy that said he could not die till Birnam Wood moved to Dunsinane. He cannot wait no longer. He commands his forces to prepare to leave the castle and fight.

Scene 6

Malcolm tells his soldiers that they are near enough to the castle now to throw down the branches they carry. He announces that Siward and Young Siward will lead the first battle. He and Macduff will follow behind. The trumpeters sound a charge

Macbeth waits on the battlefield to defend his castle. He feels like a bear that has been tied to a stake for dogs to attack. Young Siward enters and demands his name. Macbeth responds that he will be afraid to hear it. Macbeth kills Young, commenting that Young Siward must have been “born of woman" can harm him. Macduff enters alone and shouts a challenge to Macbeth, swearing to avenge the death of his wife and children. Malcolm and Siward enter and bring the news that castle has been surrendered.

Elsewhere on the battlefield, Macbeth at last encounters Macduff. They fight, and when Macbeth insists that he is invincible because of the witches’ prophecy, Macduff tells Macbeth that he was not of woman born, but rather “from his mother’s womb / Untimely ripped” (5.10.15–16). Macbeth suddenly fears for his life, but he declares that he will not surrender “[t]o kiss the ground before young Malcolm’s feet, / And to be baited with the rabble’s curse” (5.10.28–29).

Malcolm and Siward walk together in the castle, which they have now effectively captured. Ross tells Siward that his son is dead. Macduff emerges with Macbeth’s head in his hand and proclaims Malcolm King of Scotland. Malcolm declares that all his thanes will be made earls, according to the English system of peerage. They will be the first such lords in Scottish history. Cursing Macbeth and his “fiend-like” queen, Malcolm calls all those around him his friends and

(invites them all to see him crowned at Scone (5.11.35.
