Important Things (2a) Auto Save & Versions
• Auto Save
Mainly only for Apple Software
Not M$oft, for example
Some Apps have had Auto Save but are not yet using Apple’s features
• Auto Save Writes to Disk (?? iCloud??)
At any lull in your keystroking
At least every 5 minutes
• The Red button does now flag changed data
• There is a Duplicate command (Shift, Command,S)
• There is a SaveAs command (Shift, Option, Command,S)
• There is a Save a Version (Cmd S)
• You must be aware whether you are using an AutoSave App or not! Otherwise you could lose important work!
• Apple has provided the “Application Program Interface” specs so M$oft and others can implement Auto Save and Versions

Important Things (2b) Versions• Versions
Mainly only for Apple Software
Not M$oft, for example
Versions is ‘like’ Time Machine but within the document.
• Yosemite stores hourly versions for a day, daily versions for a month and weekly versions for prior months.
• Have NOT found any indication of a limit on the number of versions
• File / Revert To . . . to Browse All Versions or to Revert to last Opened
Creates Time Machine like view to select / use a prior version
Does NOT replace the existing work space, that becomes another version
• Versions Saves “copy” within the file (?)
At Least once an hour
Every Time you do Cmd S
All are Time Tagged for retrieval
Only stores what changed from prior Save
• Only current version is provided when you share the file
Demo6
Important Things (3) AirDrop
• Send files / folders
• Only between Lion or newer OS systemsOlder OS X’s, like Lion, may not have all
• Only recent Macs
• Uses Wi-Fi but NOT the Local Area Net
• Only when AirDrop Selected in Sidebar
• Recipient has to Accept transfer (not always apparently)
• Goes into Downloads folder
• Faster than sneaker net, etc.
• Can initiate as “sharing” optionDemo AirDrop 7

• Use Erase Free Space in Disk Utility to recover Drive Space, Secure Erase is SLOW
22
So, Where is it?• Spotlight (Magnifying Glass or Command SpaceBar anytime)
Key in what you are looking for
Can Include “qualifiers” ( kind:xxx, date:xxx )
System Preferences “manages” Spotlight
• Find (Command F in Finder)
Uses Spotlight Index
More Complex Searches
• Smart Folders (Create in Finder, works all the time)
Uses Spotlight
• Finder Tags (Views in Finder Sidebar)
Uses Spotlight, be careful / consistent in assigning ‘tag’s to a file
25
Security, File Vault• Disclaimer
I don’t Use for my computers in retirement. But have tested it. It works! My Security gurus like it
If I used a Laptop I WOULD use it
Uses LogIn Password to open, thus only as safe as your LogIn.
Master Password (Recovery key) can overcome forgotten Login Passwords
• BenefitsAll files in User Account are encrypted on the hard drive
No performance impact except for the set up that takes a long time
Sell / Give away computer after deleting files without worrying
29
Security, Firewall
Default status is Off
Click Turn Off / On button
If you have NAT* in router you may not need this firewall (I don’t use Firewall but I don’t use a laptop at Starbucks)
Firewall On can affect some applications
* NAT Network Address Translation30
Quick Dock Positioning• Dock Preferences can set position
Position on Bottom, Left Side or Right Side
• Quick Switch
Depress Shift Key
Grab the Divider and Drag to position
34
Launchers (instead of LaunchPad)
• Hierarchical Folders in Dock appeared in Tiger (OS 10.4)
Click and Slide on Screen to the File You want to Run / OpenYou can Drill through all levels of your file / folder structure
• Stacks (New in Leopard, Still one of my Most Valuable tools)Place a folder in DockClick to Expand, Click to Select (You can Slide through folders to go deeper)
• I Use Stacks folders extensively!Stacks for the 10% of files you use 90% of the time Stacks to get to your major Folders quickly (2 clicks)Speedy Application Launcher (2 clicks) in Large size and Alphabetical order
35
Quick Launch Stack (grid view)• This stack enables one-click start of specific files• Easier than double click of an icon on a messy desktop• Files are in the Correct folders, not on the desktop
37
Apple Apps Stack• Stack contains aliases to just Apple applications, arranged alphabetically!• One click start on good sized icon of the desired App vs crowded Dock?
38
Non-Apple Apps Stack• Stack contains aliases to non- Apple applications• One click start on good sized icon of the desired App
39
Quick Folders Stack• Stack contains aliases to selected folders• Slide cursor over folder to drill down
40
Demo
Some Quick Tips• Reduce Level of Power-On Chime (unless you want an alarm clock)
Lower Speaker setting BEFORE shutting Down or Restarting
• Quickly send Safari information in Mail message
Command, “I” (eye) creates new e-mail messageThen in Mail select between how to share options
• Quickly Attach Files to Mail message
Simply drag the file(s) to Mail icon in Dock
Creates a new message with the Attachments
41
“Don’t Modify” Folders
• Folders and files in your Library are used by your Applications
Don’t rename, Don’t move, Don’t change the internals
May be Appropriate to Copy to another Drive or CD / DVD
Certainly Needed to Backup for protection
• iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, etc. place working files in User folders
Do NOT change the internals, the Application will probably “lose” your Data
Rename Only the Main Folder: iTunes folder, iPhoto Library folder
Main Folder can be moved to another drive
Main Folder can be copied.
42
Important but Not Addressed• Disk Utility
Create Disk Images, Burn DVDs or Multi-Session CDs
Verify / Repair Disk Permissions
Verify Disk, early warning on approaching disk failure
Erase Free Disk Space (Not after cocktails, etc For giving computer away)
Erase Disk (Not after cocktails, etc)
• KeyChain Access
Secure place to store your Passwords in encrypted form.
No more stickies on your screen BUT I really endorse 1Password over KeyChain
• 1Password application, KeyChain Access on Steroids

Apple’s visual calendar program,

Visual alerts on computer screen
E-mail alerts to my Profile in Address Book.
Can combine MY schedule with other Calendars
Club Events, Holidays, etc
